"What is she doing?" Cristina asked.
Brianna, George, Cristina and Meredith were watching Izzie talk to Alex. Not only was she talking to Alex, but she was also laughing and playing with her hair and enjoying herself. Alex was also enjoying himself.
"She's hanging with Alex." Brianna said as she tied her shoelace.
"Why?" George asked.
"I don't know, but I think they might be friends." Brianna said.
They all left the locker room, and Izzie caught up with them.
"You guys are all wrong about him. Once you got to know him, he's actually a very sweet guy."
"Ummm no he's Alex…a punk ass." Brianna said.
Alex was walking up ahead with Bailey when he turned around and looked at them all.
"Grey's, Izzie was telling me you have tapes of your mom performing surgery. I'd kill to see Ellis Grey in action." Alex said to them.
"Hey, you know what you can move over tonight, and we can all watch it together, right?" Izzie suggested.
"He can come over if freezes over first." Brianna said.
The four of them blocked Izzie. "You have a thing for Alex."
"No…" Izzie said, very unconvincingly.
"You also wanted to invite Alex into the house in which my child lives. I know he like was particularly important in helping get her back, and I will be forever grateful. But I don't want him in the house with her." Brianna said.
"Hey, are we at a tea party or saving lives?" Bailey called out at them.
The five of them caught up with Bailey.
They walked through the surgical floor, and they presented several cases to Bailey and the relevant attendings. They had just finished when Bailey said they had a surgical case come up from the pit which was likely diverticulitis.
Brianna was tying her shoelace again, and Meredith was getting some from the vending machine. They ran to catch up with their friends. They could hear a woman shouting out. When they got round to the elevators, they both stopped dead in their tracks when they saw who it was coming off the elevator. It was Ellis.
Ellis was shouting at all of them whilst Cristina was attempting to present the case. They were wheeling the patient towards Meredith and Brianna. Ellis looked over and stopped the two of them.
"What the hell are you two doing here?" Ellis barked at them, which made them both jump. "I told you not to bother me whilst I was at work."
Meredith backed off and hid around the corner. Brianna stayed where she was and stared at her mom.
"What the hell are you staring at? I told you I never wanted to see you or your unborn child again, you little whore." Ellis shouted.
Brianna stormed off after her sister.
The last thing she heard as Brianna walked away was Cristina telling everyone who she was. They all stopped and gasped when they found out it was Ellis. Brianna felt everyone watching her as she walked past.
Brianna found Meredith hiding in the locker room. She sat down next to her; they didn't have to say anything. But they both knew that they were there for each other if either of them wanted to say anything.
"Well, it's not a secret anymore." Brianna said.
"Na uh." Meredith replied.
"Good to see she still thinks highly of her grandchild." Brianna told her sister.
"That's just the disease." Meredith said.
"No, she meant that. That was one lucid memory, and she meant everything. She hates Imogen and me very much." Brianna said quietly.
They went back to sitting in silence. Quickly the silence was broken by their friends' sound coming to see if they were okay they both got up and hid behind the lockers before they could be seen. Brianna picked around the corner and saw that Bailey had gotten in the way of the door to stop them from coming in.
"Meredith, Brianna are you okay?" George called out.
Brianna sat and listened to Bailey give assignments to everyone.
"Hey Mer, Bree. My great-grandmother died from Alzheimer's." Cristina said.
"My God, why would you say that?" Izzie said, chastising Cristina.
"Look I was just trying to help." Cristina said.
Bailey finished assigning everyone patients. They heard Bailey come in and shut the door. They came out from behind the lockers and looked at her.
"You two okay to work today?" Bailey asked them.
"I'm fine." They both said.
"I would understand if you wanted to be with your…" Bailey began.
"Look, we don't have the easiest relationship with our mother." Meredith explained.
"Or did you miss the part where she called me a whore in front of all my colleagues so I would rather not…look it's just better if we're working." Brianna said.
"Okay then, you're on scut." Bailey told them.
"Excuse me?" Brianna said.
"Whilst we take care of your mother, you can catch up on charting, run sample to the lab, go over…" Bailey began explaining.
"We said we're fine." Meredith insisted.
"Whilst I appreciate that you're fine, I still anticipate a certain level of distraction from the pair of you. So scut now." Bailey ordered.
They both left the room disheartened and went to find somewhere that they could work on their paperwork.
"I've got something I want to do first." Brianna said to her sister.
Brianna knocked on the door of Dr Webber's office and went in. She was carrying a chart.
"Welcome back, Chief." Brianna greeted him.
"It's good to be back, Dr Grey." Webber smiled. "What can I do for you?"
"It's my mother, sir." Brianna said as she handed him the chart.
Webber flicked through the chart, and when he realized what was up with Ellis, he sat down. Ellis and Webber undertook their residency together at Seattle Grace, and they had grown to be very close friends during their time together.
"I'm sorry we didn't tell you sooner. I know you two were close, but she made us, well she made Meredith promise who made me promise…look the point is she seems to be reliving the heyday of her residency a lot at the moment. I just thought that maybe if you stopped by and said hello, it would mean a lot to her." Brianna suggested.
"Oh, of course, of course." Webber agreed. "Do either of you two need a day off?"
"We're fine." Brianna smiled.
Brianna felt Webber alone to his thoughts in his office.
On her way back, she walked past her mother's room and see that she was fighting with George. She called him out into the hallway. They both stood in silence for a moment.
"She's allergic to penicillin." She told George.
"Yeah, I saw that in her chart." George said.
"Oh, good. You just have to be patient with her." Brianna said.
"Umm…who is Thatch?" George asked.
"My dad Thatcher. Ummm…is she talking about him? She never talks about him." Brianna said.
"Are you okay?" George asked.
"Yeah…I can't be here." Brianna said to him.
"Of course." George smiled.
George went back into her mother's room whilst Brianna lent against the wall. She looked in on her mother one last time, she saw her reading her chart whilst fighting George.
When Brianna finally got back to Meredith, she found that she had managed to get her way into surgery with Derek that afternoon, so was leaving Brianna to work on scut by herself. Brianna moved her things to a workspace closer to her mother's room so she could keep an eye on her. Despite the relationship that they had, Brianna still wanted to make sure that she was safe all she had to do was just stay out of the way.
She was busy working her way through a chart when Brianna heard a commotion coming from down the hallway. When she went running to see if she could be any help. She found that it was coming from Ellis' room. She was throwing things across the room at George, who she still thought was Thatcher.
"Don't give me that look, that sad little soulful little puppy routine. I know it by heart, Thatch! And I'm over it. I don't want to hear about your day or your students for your pathetic little research grants. My work is what counts! It's what pays for this house! It pays for you, and it pays for Meredith and Brianna and for your precious lifestyle! So why don't you just leave me alone and let me do it! The girls may think they need you, but I sure as hell don't." Ellis shouted loud enough everyone to here.
A nurse came past and handed George a syringe, Brianna knew that it was a sedative to calm Ellis down. Brianna walked away and shut herself in the office that she was working and drew the blinds and sat at the desk.
Brianna was sat in the office, working on her charts when she decided that she had had enough of just staring at the same four walls, she went to look at the OR board to see if there were any exciting surgeries that she could get a look in on. She saw that Cristina was in surgery and decided that it might be interesting to get a look in on. Brianna walked to the OR that she was in.
When she got to the OR she that Izzie and Bailey were in there talking.
"Did you know about Ellis Grey? Did Meredith or Brianna tell you?" Bailey asked Izzie.
"No," Izzie said, visibly hurt. "It's just that, you think you know someone, know who they are. Share a house and make wishes on eyelashes with them. And we don't know each other, none of us. We're just a bunch of interns who work together. There's nothing there."
Brianna knew Izzie was right, they didn't really know each other. They were both keeping a massive secret from everyone that they worked with. Brianna came in and sat next to Izzie.
"Hey," Izzie said. "How's your mom?"
"She's alright." Brianna told her.
They both went back to watching the surgery. They were watching Burke talk to Cristina when suddenly, she collapsed to the floor. Izzie, Brianna and Bailey all jumped up and looked through the window. She rushed out of the gallery and down to the OR.
As Brianna tied the mask to her face, she stuck her head out the door of the scrub room.
"I need a gurney in here." Brianna called out.
They went into the OR, got Cristina onto the gurney so they could get out the way of Burke.
"I need to get on her a monitor, her pulse is racing, and I need a B.P," Bailey called out. "I also want her on a litre of L.R wide open."
Cristina grabbed Brianna's wrist to get her attention.
"Seven weeks." Cristina whispered.
"What?" Brianna asked. Then she realized. "She's pregnant, seven weeks pregnant."
"Okay, we're going to pre-op," Bailey told everyone when they got into the elevator. "Stevens, Grey find Addison Shepherd and be discreet."
Izzie and Brianna watched the elevator door shut and then they looked at each other before running off to try and find Addison.
The duo were walking through the surgical floor trying to find Addison, they came to the stairs and were about to head up when they saw Addison coming down, she was behind George and Webber.
"Dr Shepherd, would you come with us, please. It's Cristina one of our interns, she's collapsed." Brianna said.
"Cristina's collapsed?" George asked, concerned.
"What's that got to do with me?" Addison asked bluntly.
Neither of them said anything when suddenly they each individually realized what the silence meant.
"Cristina's pregnant?" George said.
"Shut up George." Izzie said. "Just please come."
Addison came down the stairs and started to follow Izzie and Brianna, but Webber stopped Brianna.
"Sir?" Brianna asked.
"I need you to come with me." Webber said.
"It's for my mother isn't it….you think she has cancer."
"George needs your signature." Richard said.
"Can you go and get Meredith please?" Brianna asked.
"Of course." Richard said.
Brianna was pacing outside the OR that Meredith was in when she came over with George.
"What's her total bili? Meredith asked.
"It's only 4." George said.
"It's not great, but it's not terrible." Brianna said.
"No, that's why I didn't see the jaundice." George explained.
"No-one could have." Brianna told him.
George handed Meredith the clipboard with the paperwork on. They both read what it said, and they both agreed, and Meredith signed.
"We just have to wait and see." George told them.
They both stood for a moment, George awkwardly looked at Brianna. Meredith picked up on this.
"What aren't you telling me?" Meredith asked the pair of them.
"It's Cristina, she's collapsed." Brianna told her sister.
Meredith ran off down the hallway to go and check on Cristina.
Brianna was walking through the hallway, when she felt someone put their arm around her shoulders, she looked over. It was Alex. She quickly took moved his arm away but continued to walk with him.
"What do you want Karev?" Brianna asked.
"I still think it's nuts having major surgery just so people can't tell how you're feeling." Alex said to her. He was walking about a patient that he treated with Derek and Meredith to treat her excessive blushing.
"Really? You do?" Brianna replied sarcastically.
"Nah, I guess not." Alex laughed. "You could talk, you know, I mean if you need to."
"I'm fine." Brianna insisted.
"You've said that word, so many times today it doesn't even sound like a word anymore. I'm just saying you can talk to me cause, you know, even if I repeat every word you say no one around here likes me. They'll just call me a liar and move on." Alex said.
"Izzie likes you." Brianna told him. She looked over and saw Alex smiling to himself. "You're blushing."
"Shut up." Alex said, trying to act cool.
They both smiled at the situation.
"Look, for what it's worth I don't know how you're still on your feet. If I found out my mom might have cancer, I'd be under the bar right now." Alex said.
"You want the ugly truth?" Brianna asked.
"What? You have an ugly truth? I never would've picked you to have an ugly truth." Alex said.
"I'm more afraid she doesn't have cancer." Brianna said quietly.
"Well, liver cancer's fast. Painful, but it's fast, and they give you morphine. They don't give you morphine for Alzheimer's." Alex told her.
"No. They don't." Brianna muttered. "What kind of person wishes their mother had cancer?"
"I know what you mean. It's not that you want your mom to have cancer. It's that you don't want her to suffer." Alex suggested.
"God, that was deep and meaningful Karev. If I didn't know better, I might actually think you cared." Brianna laughed, it made Alex smile too.
Just then, Alex got paged away. Izzie was right he wasn't so bad once you got to know him.
Brianna was left walking the hallways to herself. She found herself outside Cristina's room. She joined George and Meredith sitting on the nurse's station. They watched Izzie come out of Cristina's room.
"Hey, of you mum's biopsy results come back yet?" Izzie asked.
"Not yet." George replied.
"How's Cristina." Meredith asked.
"She'll be okay. She's going to have a lot of pain for the next few days, but she'll be okay." Izzie said. "Are you?"
"What do you mean?" Meredith asked.
"Well it just seems like you and Cristina and your sister are over there and I'm over here." Izzie said.
"So Alex…" Brianna said skilfully changing the conversation.
"Yeah, I know you guys hate him. Fine." Izzie said.
"Yeah, we do hate him." George said sarcastically.
"No, I was going to say I believe you. That he's different once you get to know him." Brianna smiled.
Izzie smiled back at her.
A nurse came up to Meredith and handed her a piece of paper for their mother's results. Meredith gave the results to Brianna and walked away. Brianna read the results herself.
"Bree?" Izzie asked.
"No cancer," Brianna said, she handed the results to George. "You tell her."
"Of course." George said.
Brianna walked away and went to find her sister.
