Chapter 8: In Just A Moment's Time
Narrator: The Gummi Ship landed on top of a skyscraper.
Sora: Where are we now?
Akira: Beats me. Maybe we can look around and see if anyone in the area can tell us.
Narrator: At that moment, a small group of men approached Akira and Sora.
Akira: Excuse me can you-
Narrator: The small group of men pulled machine guns and pointed them at Akira and Sora.
?: Who are you?
Akira: Listen. We don't want any trouble. We are a bit lost and don't know where we are. If you would just tell us where we are-
Narrator: At that moment, a loud popping sound whizzed past Akira's ear. Akira turned around to see a small bullet slammed against the wall, leaving a small dent in the wall.
Akira: Ok... I think maybe you are getting ahead of yourselves...
Narrator: Akira grabbed one of the machine guns and broke it in two. In the distance a girl with a large top-hat with a devilish grin was watching.
?: That guy is making short work of those Medici goons. Perhaps he can help me...
Narrator: At that moment, an elderly man with a cane walked forward. However, the man looked very... disheveled
Akira: Hm? Who are you?
Lorenzo: My name is Lorenzo Medici. You got a lot of nerve coming here and picking fights with my men.
Akira: …. I wasn't exactly picking a fight. They shot their puny guns at me. I was only acting in self-defense.
Lorenzo: A likely story. Men, fire at will!
Sora: Um, Akira... I think we should go.
Akira: Sora... find cover... I'll take care of this.
Sora: Alright.
Narrator: Sora ran behind a nearby wall. Akira closed his eyes, emitting a silver glow.
Akira: Last chance to walk away, Lorenzo...
Lorenzo: Or else what?
Narrator: Akira appeared behind Lorenzo and began to chuckle.
Akira: Before you become a bloody smear on the wall.
Narrator: Lorenzo stumbled to the floor, sweating and cowering in fear.
Akira: What happened to all that bravado earlier?
Narrator: Akira grabbed Lorenzo by his neck and raised him high in the air.
Lorenzo: Ggghh...
Akira: Hehehehe... What's wrong? I can't hear you.
Narrator: Lorenzo's body suddenly went limp and Akira put him on the floor and walked away grinning slightly.
Sora: Woah! Akira... did you-
Akira: No. He's not dead. He's knocked out. He'll wake up soon. For now, let's just get out of here before more of his goons show up.
Sora: Good idea. Hopefully we can find someone who can tell us where we are.
Narrator: At that moment, the girl with the large top-hat walked up to Akira and Sora.
?: You sure did a number on Lorenzo and his goons.
Akira: Who are you?
Peacock: Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Peacock. I can already tell ya not from around here.
Akira: Yeah. My name is Akira Shirogane and the boy behind me is Sora.
Sora: Pleased to meet you, Peacock!
Peacock: Charmed, I'm sure. Follow me. I can help you guys get out of here.
Akira: Lead the way.
Narrator: Peacock led Akira and Sora to a laboratory.
Peacock: Welcome to Lab 8.
Akira: Nice place you got here.
Peacock: This place belongs to Dr. Avian, but sadly he was killed by someone from Lab Zero.
Akira: Oh. Sorry to hear that. It sounds like you appreciate the doctor quite fondly.
Peacock: Yeah. He was the one that saved me from certain death. If not for him, I'd be dead by now. All of us here in this lab would have been.
Narrator: A large man with a brown trench coat approached Akira, Sora and Peacock.
?: So, who are these two?
Peacock: Aww... Ben. Don't be such a sourpuss. These guys made short work of Lorenzo and his goons. We won't be hearing them for a while.
Narrator: The large man stared in Akira and Sora's direction and smiled.
Big Band: Sorry for scaring you. My name is Ben Birdland. But Peacock calls me "Big Band". It's thanks to Dr. Avian that I'm alive right now. Thanks for doing something about Lorenzo and his goons.
Akira: No problem. He was getting on my nerves anyway. Do you guys have some kind of problem with those guys?
Big Band: Lately, they have been causing problems for people here in New Meridian. And not just here... but other places too. Random killings have been happening lately. The police won't do anything about it because most of them are in alliance with the Medici's.
Akira: I'm guessing Lorenzo is a Medici?
Peacock: Yup he's the head honcho.
Sora: He sounds like real bad news.
Big Band: Yeah. Anyone that crossed Lorenzo funny ends up dead within the hour.
Akira: It's a good thing I took care of him before he attempted to hurt anyone else.
Big Band: I wouldn't count Lorenzo out just yet... He'll be back. He always does.
Akira: Oy vey... I guess for now we can keep putting a dent in Lorenzo's plans.
Big Band: And how do you plan to do that? He has eyes and ears all over this city. Including some members of the police force.
Akira: Hm. This is going to be tricky then.
Big Band: Indeed.
Narrator: Meanwhile in the Medici mansion... Lorenzo was sitting on his chair, with his face white as a sheet.
Lorenzo: (Who the hell was that kid? I've never seen anyone that powerful other than the Skullgirl and no one has seen the Skullgirl in months.
Narrator: At that moment... a tall lady with a mask on her face approached Lorenzo.
?: You seemed troubled, Lorenzo. Is something the matter?
Lorenzo: Of course! I was done in by two members of Lab 8 and some mysterious kid that turned our men into mincemeat. I need to get rid of them and fast. Black Dahlia... be a dear and take care of it, won't you?
Black Dahlia: Consider it done, Lorenzo.
Narrator: Dahlia leaves the room. Lorenzo begins to chuckle.
Lorenzo: (Hehehehe... I can always count on Dahlia to eliminate anyone I want dead. Now all that's left is-)
Narrator: At that moment, a girl with a maid outfit with skulls surrounding her body crashed through the wall.
?: LORENZO! YOU ARE GOING TO DIE TODAY!
Lorenzo: (Shit... not now... not when Dahlia left to Lab 8)
Narrator: The skulls around the girl's body slammed into Lorenzo's body, pinning him to the wall.
Lorenzo: Damn it! I can't move!
?: Now… you will die by my hands! Medici blood will spill this night!
Narrator: Meanwhile… back at Lab 8, Akira, Peacock and Big Band are eating when a barrage of bullets slam through the main door, blasting it open.
Akira: What the hell?
Peacock: Oy vey… it's her again.
Akira: Who do you mean by "her"?
Big Band: She was referring to Black Dahlia that burst down our door.
Black Dahlia: Apologies. But…. I am going to have to kill the three of you.
Akira: I am guessing Lorenzo put you up to this.
Black Dahlia: Who else?
Akira: Well I have bad news for you lady… You are not going to kill anyone here.
Black Dahlia: And why is that?
Narrator: At that moment, Akira begins to crack his knuckles and began to smirk.
Akira: Cause you….
Narrator: Akira with blinding speed grabs Dahlia's arm and bends it slightly. Dahlia winces a little bit, going down on one knee.
Akira: Are going to tell us everything that you know. Why does Lorenzo want to attack this place? What is his endgame? And speak quickly. I am very inclined to break both your arms and legs.
Black Dahlia: Lorenzo knows that Lab Zero poses a threat to his empire. That is why he wants it gone. But there is one other thing…
Akira: What?
Black Dahlia: The Skullgirl has been wreaking havoc the past few days. I am surprised that she has not attacked this place yet.
Peacock: (Is she talking about Marie? If that is the case… something crazy is about to go down. And the way things are goin'… We are not gonna be ready for what lies ahead.)
Akira: Where can we find the Skullgirl? If we can find her… we can stop her.
Peacock: We can stop her… but there is something that you should know about her. She is… my best friend Marie.
Akira: Wait, what?
Peacock: Yup. We were from the same orphanage. She had her own problems to deal with, so she ran. I do not blame her but…. I think she blames herself for what happened to me.
Akira: I see. Do you think you can reason with Marie?
Peacock: See…. That's the problem. She hates the Medici Family with a burning passion. It is highly possible that we may have to fight her. Bottom line is…. She ain't going down without a fight.
Big Band: I will take care of Black Dahlia. You three go find Marie and stop her.
Black Dahlia: There is only one place your friend would go. To where Lorenzo is. To end the Medici bloodline once and for all.
Akira: Why would you tell us that information? What do you have to gain from it?
Black Dahlia: To be perfectly honest with you… nothing. I figured you deserved to know. Since it is possible that Lorenzo is dead by now.
Big Band: If that is true… then things are about to get a lot more complicated from here on.
Akira: Then we better get to Lorenzo before he gets killed.
Narrator: Peacock, Akira and Sora ran to the Medici tower. Akira looked up at top of the tower where giant bones were floating in mid-air.
Akira: So those bones up there…
Peacock: Yeah…. That is Marie alright… I hope we aren't too late.
Narrator: A few minutes later… Akira and co. got to the top of the Medici Tower, where Lorenzo was pinned down by Marie.
Peacock: Marie!
Marie: …. You shouldn't have come, Patricia. You and your friends are too late. Lorenzo will die by my hands and the Medici's reign will end.
Peacock: Marie! I know you want to get revenge on the Medici… believe me, I want to exact revenge also but… this isn't the way. Plus… there is something else more powerful at work here.
Marie: What could possibly stop my revenge?
Narrator: At that moment, the sky began to darken… and Galeem and Dharkon appeared.
Peacock: That. That could stop you. Marie! You must move before-
Narrator: At that moment, a beam slams into Marie's back, causing her to release her grip on Lorenzo.
Marie: Aaargh!
Akira: Galeem and Dharkon see Marie as a threat. And once she's defeated… they will capture her and turn her against you. Well… a lot more than she's already doing.
Narrator: Marie falls to the floor, wincing in pain.
Marie: Peacock…. You must get out of here… Before those things destroy this building and everyone in it.
Akira: Marie… We all must get out of here.
Narrator: Akira stares at Lorenzo unconscious and scoffs.
Akira: So… what are we going to do about him?
Peacock: What about him?
Akira: Are you legit serious about leaving this guy? I thought you wanted to exact your revenge on him… not that I'm complaining. I'm sure Dharkon and Galeem won't bother using him for their purposes.
Peacock: Yeah. I'm quite sure. Marie?
Marie: Whatever happens to him, I don't care. As long as the reign of the Medici's end.
Akira: Still though, we must get out of here!
Marie: I… can't leave.
Akira: Wait, what?
Peacock: Marie, you can't be serious. We have to get out of here before those things kill us.
Marie: I am wounded. I will only just slow you down.
Peacock: Marie… I'm not leaving you after all this time! Akira, I'm staying with her.
Akira: What? No, you can't!
Big Band: I'll stay and protect them. No matter the cost.
Sora: I think… I'll do the same. I couldn't protect my friends from my world, but I can try to save theirs.
Akira: Guys… please you don't have to do this. We can escape this place together and stop Galeem and Dharkon!
Peacock: Akira, you got to go! If you stay… they will destroy you too! Go!
Narrator: At that moment, a portal opened behind Akira.
Akira: GUYS! NO!
Narrator: Galeem and Dharkon both fired two beams of energy crashing into the building causing Akira to be blasted into the portal.
Akira: NO!
Narrator: Akira began to feel weak and closed his eyes as he floated in the portal vortex.
