Magnus

"Who can tell me Alexander Hamilton's significance in the American Revolution?" Mr. Brunner asks.

My hand shoots up as quick as I can make it, and Mr. Brunner sighs and calls on me.

"Really, Magnus, you must let other students answer questions sometimes."

"I do! All the time, in algebra. But when the question is about Alexander Hamilton…"

He rolls his eyes. "Very well. Go on."

"Well, Alexander served as George Washington's aide, but during the Battle of Yorktown, Washington appointed him to command an infantry battalion, which was instrumental in winning the war. After the revolution, of course, Hamiton became the secretary of the treasury and went on to do a lot of controversial things."

Brunner nods. "That is correct." He goes on to talk about George and Alexander's relationship, and I glance out of the corner of my eye to see Alex smirking at me.

I quickly tear a corner off of my notebook paper and write her a note.

What's so funny?

She reads it quickly, scribbles a response, and passes it back to me.

You're a nerd

I mouth rude to her, and then focus back on Mr. Brunner, fighting to keep a smile off my face.

"Hey! Alex!" I get her attention by waving my hand and she comes and sits next to me, across from TJ and Sam, plunking her lunch tray down.

"I honestly can't believe how ahead I am." She says as she shovels mac and cheese into her mouth. "Like, I knew my dad gave me advanced tutors and shit, but I always thought of him homeschooling me as more of a thing to keep an eye on me, not to 'give me the best education available' or whatever. I still believe that was the root cause, but at least he did something that would benefit me at all in life. Now I can just zone out and relax for the next two and a half years."

"You are not going to be doing that." Me and Sam both say at the same time.

"Wow, y'all are both the mom friend." TJ says, snorting.

"Whatever." I roll my eyes. "Alex, you can't just relax your way through high school."

"Yes I can!" she argues. "I'll bet you ten dollars I can answer any question you have about anything we learned today, and I wasn't paying attention at all."

"Okay," I say, "What was Alexander Hamilton's role in the American Revolution?"

"Alexander served as George Washington's aide, but during the Battle of Yorktown, Washington appointed him to command an infantry battalion, which was instrumental in winning the war. After the revolution, of course, Hamiton became the secretary of the treasury and went on to do a lot of controversial things." Alex says, quoting me perfectly.

"Whatever."

"How do you know so much about Hamilton anyway?"

I blush and hide my face as Sam blurts out, "Oh, he loves the musical. He started a debate about who of us would be who in the Hamilsquad last year."

"Which one were you?" Alex asks me, poking my hands until I move them away from my face.

"Laurens." I mumble.

"Good choice!" She says. "Let me guess, you're Hercules and you're Lafayette?" She points at Sam and TJ in turn.

"How'd you know?" TJ asks.

"I have my ways. I always thought I would be Hamilton."

"Hey, now we've got all four!" TJ says.

"Nice! And you're totally Alexander. Even the names kind of match up!" I say.

"Hey, did you know that in real life, Hamilton and Laurens were like, dating?" Sam says, obviously knowing exactly what she's implying. I turn a deep shade of red and subtly kick her under the table.

"Really?" Alex says. "That's totally amazing. I never knew that. Alexander Hamilton, queer icon. Oh my god, did you know my dad named me after him? If only he knew."

"Life has a funny way of shoving things in our faces so subtly we never realise." Sam says.

Yeah, I think, looking at Alex. It does.

A/N: I'm back! My excuse this time is that my parents started this stupid rule that electronics are to be used completely only for freaking school, so I have to start a whole-ass debate anytime I want to write, and technically I'm not even supposed to be on this site, but I'm doing it anyway. I hope you enjoy this chapter and please favorite, follow, and review!
