Time flew by in a blurry; One moment he was hanging up the phone, getting lost in his own thoughts, the next someone was knocking at the door, and when he went to open a broken and teary eyed Maddie held up by a tired looking Chimney was standing outside. He helped Chimney with getting Maddie to the couch and when she saw it she started crying harder, if that was even possible, and Bobby and Chimney had to pretty much carry her from the living room entrance door and all the way to the couch.
"How come bad things always happen to good people" she asked, taking in a hiccuppy breath for every one or two words, looking from Bobby to Chimney with tears still streaming down her face in a steady stream; "Buck didn't deserve any of this. Isn't it enough that he has to deal with the mess of me being in his life? Now the only thing that made sense to him is taken away, and we just expect for him to be happy about it? To get over it? And then some natural freaking disaster hits, and of course he has to be just in the center of the freaking thing, trying to protect his best friend's eight year old disabled son and getting separated from said child, and still we just expect for him to move on? Never even talking about what happened?" Maddie has shifted from miserable crying to fueling rage, but it didn't surpass Chimney how she had been speaking of herself as a burden on Buck in the beginning of her rant.
"Hey you are not a mess in Buck's life, or in mine for that matter" he smiled at her warmly, but if eyes could kill Maddie's was suddenly doing the trick right now, so instead changed tactic; "Buck didn't deserve what happened, and neither did you, but sometimes bad things just happen, even to good people. I know you weren't around when it happened, but I would guess you have heard the stories of my miraculous recovery from getting a rebar stuck in my head, and the reason I made was do to your brother and the amazing people currently searching for him and all their relentless efforts; So I believe that Buck is strong enough to make it, with the help of all his friends and his amazing sister, and I believe you'll make it too" he said whilst rubbing her back to comfort her.
"I know, or at least part of me knows. I just can't shake off the feeling that somehow I should have been able to do more. I knew he wasn't dealing with any of it; I saw how withdrawn and isolated he became after finding out about the real reason he wasn't allowed back in the field after the accident, how lonely he became after losing all of you; I tried to get through to him, but he wasn't having any of it, just pushing him further away by keep trying" she started to cry again. Chimney moved in closer to her and just kept on rubbing her back, looking up at Cap with a pleading look that said 'Please let him be okay, otherwise I think we may lose both of them', Bobby nodded in understanding, holding that very same plea in his mind.
They had been seated for a while, Maddie crying, Chimney trying to comfort her and Bobby staring blankly out into space while remembering that dreadful evening where everything had changed; The look of horror and pain in Buck's eyes as he laid on the pavement fighting for his life; The image changing to Buck laid up in a hospital bed, unconscious, while a doctor was describing the extent of his injuries to the 118, Maddie, Athena, Carla and Buck's girlfriend at the time, telling them how even though they had stabilized the leg, it was too soon to tell if Buck would return to being a firefighter; Yet another flashing moment from the party they had held at his and Athena's house, how they had all been all happy and laughing, then suddenly Buck started coughing, lightly at first but then turning into blood and Buck collapsing to the floor; Another hospital bed, Buck looking all pale; Another flash shoving Buck leaving the firehouse after an argument they had just had, ending with Buck quitting as a firefighter; One week later, after a tsunami had struck, standing in the VA hospital and looking at a way to quiet and pale Buck, looking from Buck to Eddie holding Christopher and back again, realising with horror that the two had been in the tsunami; Again another hospital bed with Buck in it, looking like death once again, God how many lives did this kid have, was he part cat or something; A knocking on the door, letting them know someone was waiting outside, he went to open and found Buck standing there with a letter in his hand, telling him that he was being sued; Sitting at his office in the station when a pling from his phone made him aware of having received a text message, he hadn't planned on reading it straight away, but after hearing the horrifying screams of Hen, Eddie and Chimney, running out to see all three of them looking at their phones, picking up his own with now very shaky hands and reading those words that would haunt him for years to come; Walking slowly, like time didn't matter anymore, to where his wife was seated holding on to a limp body that isn't moving.
A sound broke his chain of thoughts and he looked over at Chimney and Maddie who seemed just as confused, so not any of them, but who then? He got up from the chair he was seated in slowly and started moving towards where the sound had come from, gesturing to Chimney to call for backup. The sound seemed to possibly have come from Chris room, maybe some of the kids toys had just fell to the floor and they were all being overly dramatic; 'Still better safe than sorry' he thought to himself before putting his hand on the handle and pulling it down slowly, putting slight pressure to the door as he did so…
