Chapter Seven: What is Magic?

"Let me clarify it for you, magic isn't what you think it is." Genkai held out her hand.

"What are you spouting fa...! Aunt Genkai..." Louise voice lowered as she spoke. She would have to get it into her head she had summoned her aunt. Her Aunt!

A glowing blue orb appeared in Genkai's outstretched arm. "This is pure spirit power, the basis for all magic, I guess you would call it willpower."

"But that's not possible Genkai, willpower isn't tangible, it just creates our spells." Karin demonstrated by conjuring a small wind. Impressive seeing how she was nearly void of any remaining willpower.

"Ahem, spirit power can only be manipulated through hard work and dedication, all of Halkeginia mages rely on focuses like wands to cheat." She grabbed Karin's wand. "This is nothing more then a crutch, or restrictive tool, it just holds mages back from their real potential."

"Aunt Genkai do you suggest we be like elves and use wand less magic!?" Louise was appalled.

"Genkai, but what does a lesson on magic have to do with void magic?" Karin questioned her sister.

"Everything."

"What does that even mean?" Louise asked.

"You need to broaden your minds and accept the fact that magic isn't what you think it is, it's not a blessing, nor is it Brimir's gift to nobles. Magic is in everyone, and every living thing. Magic is the embodiment of all our life struggles to improve, and grow stronger, both with hardship and pain!"

Karin had not been lectured like this since she was a child. Everything her sister said flew in the face of everything they knew, even in Brimiric teachings she had studied all her life. It was hearsay, but Genkai was still her sister, and she was strong.

"That's hearsay! Brimir stated only nobles have magic!" Louise shouted.

Karin wished to defend her sister, but at the same time she did not want to argue with her daughter, as if doing so would be to disgrace her self, and her own beliefs.

Genkai knew this was going to be a problem. Ever since she had come back she knew it was coming. But to deny the truth to her only family was something she would not do. She too was once in the same boat. How long ago was it she had found herself training alongside Toguro. Back then the dojo was full of members, and she had asked lots of questions.

At first their was massive culture shock. No Brimir, no magic, no, instead their was only talent and raw training. Back then she endured, just like her family would now. Her family would not have the privilege of meeting Koenma, or meet spirit detectives like she had. They only had her word.

"Magic as you know it is not real!"

"But sister, you called you and Louise Void mages." Karin spoke up, hoping to quell her daughters anger.

"That is what Halkeginia would call us, yes. But to be more accurate, we are just absent of any elemental affinity, and instead just control pure spirit energy."

"So all I can do is manipulate Will-power? How am I suppose to craft any spells then! I am a zero after all!" Louise cried as she ran to her home.

"Could that have been done with more tact sister!" Karin shouted.

"She needs to grow up and understand! How else am I suppose to train her?"

"Train her?"

"Yes Karin, I'm older than you, and I need a successor. That's if you both agree?"

Karin was at a loss. A void mage daughter, a long lost sister, and now life changing decisions. Karin was lost on how to reply. So she stared.

"Even if she does accept Karin, know my training might kill her, so I'd understand if you didn't allow it."

"We can talk about this later. Now first off, I have a daughter to console, and another daughter to explain a few things too."

Genkai looked over to the house. She felt another presence. It was human, but it's demonic blood was strong.

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

Matilda had started to speed up her plans ever since the Familiar summoning ritual. She had hoped she could use her triangle class magic to simply steal her target in secret. The day of the Familiar exhibition would keep every ones eyes away long enough. But that was all a bust now due to the enchantments protecting the vault, as well as her presence. Thankfully, she, would be gone for at least another week or two. Which is why she had devised a new plan.

A student had felt dishonored while eating in Vestri court. It was a simple matter for Osmond to stop the whole thing. He had simply used a powerful magic artifact that had put all the students to sleep before a fight could break out.

Yes, the Bell of Slumber, such a powerful artifact to just being sitting among the clutter of his desk. It was treated as a simple tool that saw very little use. Matilda who sat near feet from it at her own desk almost all day saw its true potential.

Yes, in a couple days their would be a staff meeting of all the teachers conveniently in one spot. With it being the day of the void, a lot of the students would either be gone or preoccupied with other things. Hence she would hatch her sleepy heist, and none would be the wiser, the bell would just be an added bonus.

The Ring of Destruction would be hers! Fouquet would be the new proud owner of two powerful magic relics.

"Ha ha ha ha."

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

Genkai was sitting in a very comfortable sofa. A cat purred in her lap. Their was in fact a lot of animals around. It somewhat reminded her of her compound, well with a bit less demonic presence, and more an animal one. The true oddity was across from her. Their sitting in a bed in the living room was her other niece, one Cattleya de La Fontaine. She was sick, or so her younger sister had said.

That however was truly not the case. Cattleya was starving herself, but not on purpose, but Genkai thought she would if she knew the truth. Her presence was saturated in demonic energy. Her demon blood was strong, and if Genkai guessed correctly, her niece was starving from a lack of human flesh. Not that she was going to tell anyone, least not till her sickness, got worse.

"So aunt, your planning to teach Louise how to use void magic." Said the cheerful smiling girl.

"I will guide her, it's up to her to learn and grow."

"Were back sister, Louise has agreed to learn void magic. Reluctantly. I just ask you refrain from talking too much in front of others about it." Karin said, hoping that Genkai would avoid speaking blasphemy in front of others.

"I'm sorry Aunt Genkai." Louise reluctantly apologized.

"Two carriages are being prepared, Louise will had back to the Academy, while we will head to the capital Genkai." Karin dictated.

"Sounds like a plan."

"Why can't I go with you mother?" Louise asked.

"You still need to attend school Louise, besides your Aunt and I have a lot of catching up to do. And we need to plan for your future."

Louise wanted to argue father, but her mother just glared at her. Louise would not be winning this fight. At least she would be able to spend a little more time with her elder sister Cattleya.

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

Siesta was still full of energy, this morning she had started by meditating followed by her daily chores, all of them. It was almost noon and she had finished everything she was assigned.

"You know girl, you're a monster." Stated chef Marteau.

"I'm just glad I could help."

"Siesta I had planned for this to be done by five people." He looked over the store room.

The storeroom which was almost nearly empty an hour ago was now filled with hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables. He had gawked when he saw her lifting fifty pound bags of potatoes on each shoulder. For such a petite girl, he didn't know where she was hiding her muscles. He came back from his thoughts as Siesta spoke once again.

"It was no problem, so do you have anything else for me to do?"

Chef Marteau sweat dropped. If he allowed her to do any more work today he may see less of his friends employed at the academy. "No Siesta, please just go do your meditation or something, your free for the rest of the day."

"But Marteau?"

"Just go."

Siesta was slightly angry that she wasn't being given any work. Like they were treating her easy, she liked working up a sweat to stay in shape, how was she supposed to do that when they wouldn't give her any more work.

In frustration she sat by a tree in the washing courtyard and started meditating. That was short lived though, as Siesta was startled by a large boom, followed shortly after by another...

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

The last four days for Louise, had been humbling experience. She had those four days of time to think alone in her carriage. The revelations brought forth by her mother, and aunt, had her questioning her whole life. Louise didn't know whether her familiar ritual summoning was a blessing or a curse. Rule of steel had ruled her life. The idea of upholding all the laws an ideals of nobles was ingrained in her since as long as she could remember. The idea of learning from her aunt was both exciting and repulsive. Even her own mother and sister wished for her to realize her potential. If her aunt Genkai was anything to go by however, Louise would become powerful indeed.

It was good this trip was finally coming to an end. While it would still be bad at the academy, the jeers of zero wouldn't stop any time soon after all, at least, for the moment, she would have some peace. Yes, peace from battles, peace from aunts, and a brimir forsaken bath. Riding in a carriage for what amounted for eight days, even with pit stops, was not a fun or clean experience.

"Boom!"

"What in Brimir was that!" Louise shouted.

"Boom!"

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

Matilda had been waiting for this moment to enact her plans. The students were asleep, the staff was slumbering away in a classroom, and the servants were either too busy, or would be too scared to interfere. Of course she had made sure to attend the meeting of the teachers as Osmond's secretary. Of course a clay golem had taken her place, an Alibi as best she could manage, not that any of the academy's staff would ever put any of this plan together.

So without further delay Fouquet the crumbling dirt made her appearance. So whilst riding atop her massive clay golem, she started the very noisy plan of forcing her way into the void towers vault. Thanks to her new magic artifact, the Bell of Slumbering, no one would intervene. Though the bell was now out of magic until it recharged, she knew that she would have plenty of time to achieve her goal.

*Chapter Seven: What is Magic?*

Despite the spooked horses and commoners in Louise carriage, Louise demanded that they keep moving forward. The repetitive booms coming from the academy was a bad sign, well unless some noble children were fighting again. If that was the case though, then the staff would have already put a stop to it.

As Louise came around the bend, she could see a massive clay golem attacking the void tower. "Where are the teaching staff!" Louise yelled to no one in particular.

"Miss Valliere, the horse will go no further, you should stay in the carriage for your own safety."

"No, it's my noble duty to stop this affront to Tristain." Louise charged out of the carriage towards the school.

"The Duchess is going to kill us." The soldiers looked at each other. "Come back!" The commoners protecting Louise carriage shouted to no avail.

Louise did not look back as she charged to the base of the tower.

At this moment the enchantments protecting the wall decided to give. Louise was shocked as ton of debris shot in her direction. Still she had a plan. Reaching into her pocket she pulled out the two pieces of burnt wood that once constituted her wand. She look mortified.

"Oh founder."

"Miss Vallierre!" Said a charging maid. The dirt behind her kicked up as she dove for the noble lady.
