Maddy was stunned to hear that SWAT had been called on her parents. She was even more stunned to find out that a radical political group her mother became involved with made the call.
"Why can't you just play Bridge or Mah Jong?" Maddy asked when she walked into the living room.
"Are you trying to say I'm old?"
"Well, if the walker fits."
"You've been around Max far too much."
Maddy walked over and hugged her mother, "how are you?"
"You want the truth, don't you?"
"You can lie and I'll just know it's the opposite."
"I am in pain, I feel guilty, I'm depressed, and I'm terrified to be here."
"'Here' as in here in the house?"
"Yes," I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight."
"Do you want me to stay over and you can sleep with me?"
"I can't ask you to do that."
"You don't have to because I asked. You just have to answer."
"I don't know."
"I'm pretty sure you do and are thinking the exact same thing that I'm thinking. The night you were raped, when you came home, you thought you would be able to sleep because the rape had happened on the floor. You thought that you would be fine in the house. I stayed with you and you were having a nightmare. I woke you up and took you outside for some air. I told you that we didn't have to go to sleep."
"I remember," Diane was so grateful to her daughter that night. "Okay, we can sleep that way again," Diane conceded.
Kurt slept in another room so that Maddy and Diane could stay in the master bedroom. There was a balcony and Maddy could take Diane on it if she woke up needing air. Diane told her daughter that she could do her nightly routine on her own, but she would need help changing.
"Maddy," Diane called for her daughter from the bathroom.
The girl walked in and knew what her mother needed, "why don't I change your pants first, and then I'll help you up?" Diane nodded and Maddy grabbed her mother's pajama pants. Once the pants were changed, Maddy helped her mother to stand and pull her pants up. She held on as her mother washed her hands. After Maddy washed her's, she brought her mother's walker to her. Maddy helped her mother get into bed and Diane gasped in pain. "Sorry," Maddy said feeling guilty, "do you still want me to change your shirt?"
"Yes, and don't be sorry."
Maddy changed her mother's shirt and gave her pain pills to her. "I guess I should have given you those first."
"I would have fallen asleep before I had finished getting ready." Maddy moved her mother's walker out of her reach, did her nightly routine, and crawled in bed next to her mother. "You moved my walker."
"You don't have a good history with it during the night."
Diane smiled at her daughter, "thank you for helping me."
"You don't have to thank me."
"I love you, Maddy."
"I love you too, Mama."
Diane's pain pills kicked in and she quickly fell asleep. Maddy was hoping that her mother would sleep through the night because she really needed it. The young woman was just so grateful that her parents and sisters weren't killed. Her mother may be hurting, but she's alive and can recover. Maddy is not ready to lose her parents and this is the second time she almost lost her mother.
