"Looks like you got lucky the bullet didn't penetrate into the skin" Swain cleaned the wound on the side of her thigh
"I told Mike, it was just a flesh wound" she hissed slightly
"A flesh wound that went pretty deep, Kate your six stiches in and I'm still going"
"Stop exaggerating" she leant on her elbow
"Do you want me to show you how deep it was again or do you prefer to not gag again" he teased
"Can we not relive that experience" she shook her head
"So what happened?" he questioned putting another stitch in
"Oh you know, he tried to.. get handsy I knocked him out and drove the boat back to port"
"And how did the gun come into it?"
"I was turning the boat off and next thing I know he had woken up and there was a gun pushed into my back"
"You didn't tie him up?" he pulled another stick through
"With what? There was no rope, no cable nothing" she tried to hide her pain
"Sorry.." he noticed her pain
"We fought over the gun, it went off twice the first one in my leg the second in his gut"
"So you killed him?"
"I.. I don't know" she teared up
"I'm sorry.. I didn't mean it like that"
"He fell to the ground holding his abdomen, I didn't know what to do I just.. I just ran"
"The best thing you could do by the sounds of it" he placed the needle down picking up the alcohol wipe
"Yeah.." she sighed while he cleaned up the wound putting a bandage across it
"You'll need to take it easy for a while with that and get a check up at the doctors" he grabbed her hand to help her off the bed
"Thanks Swain.."
"Any other pain or injury's?" he pulled his gloves off looking at the red mark across her cheek
"Just my ribs, he pushed me into a bench" she shrugged
"Can you show me?" he placed his gloves down
"Ah.. yeah" she pulled her shirt up slightly to reveal a deep turning purple bruise
"Mind if I?" he reached out
"Sure" she nodded when his hands made contact with her skin he began softly pushing along her ribs and abdomen,
getting to the spot across her lower abdomen she jumped slightly
"Sorry, is it just pain any nausea or feeling faint?"
"I feel a little nauseous and have had pretty bad pain since it happened"
"Hmm" he hummed pressing down again
"Is there something wrong?"
"Is it like a period kind of pain or?"
"A cramping pain and it goes into my back"
"Is it possible your Pregnant?" he blurted out
"What?" she scoffed hissing immediately after
"It's just the signs your describing are related to miscarriages, when was the last time you had a period?"
"I don't know a month maybe but I don't think I'm Preg-.."
"Swain?" his voice interrupted stopping her mid-sentence
"Sir…" he cleared his throat moving back Kate pulled her shirt down
"What.. what are you doing?"
"I was just.."
"Swain was just checking on my ribs, got a pretty hard shove into a bench" Kate butted in
"And the leg situation?" he pointed changing the subject
"All stitched up" Swain began cleaning up the gear
"So not just a flesh wound after all then" he raised an eyebrow at Kate
"Apparently not" she cleared her throat
"Are we all done here?"
"Swain?" Kate questioned
"Yes Sir, all done" he nodded
"Great so I can steal you away?" Mike looked at Kate hopeful
"Um sure.." she smiled sadly following him into the hall
"I'm sure Jai is eager to see you" he slowly walked next to her
"Where is he anyway?"
"With Maxine, a hundred percent this time" he smiled nudging her arm
"Yeah…"
"Hey.." he stopped to face her
"Yep?" she looked at him confused
"You okay?"
"I'm fine" she tried to assure him,
sighing softly when he grabbed her hand and pulled her into his cabin closing the door behind them.
"You want to try convincing me again?"
"Mike.." she shook her head
"Talk to me" he placed a hand on her back, his heart breaking when she moved forward away from him
"I need you to tell me.."
"Sorry?"
"I need to know whether I'm going to be charged with murder" she sat down on his rack
"Murder? Kate, Jim's at hospital"
"What?" she looked across at him when he sat in his desk chair
"I went with Charge to inspect the boat, we found him on the deck clutching his abdomen I rang an ambulance"
"He's not dead?"
"No, he's very much alive" he rolled his chair forward stopping in front of her
"I…" she looked at him with tears in her eyes when his hand came to rest across her cheek
"Why would you do it, why'd you leave.."
"I did it for you, for Jai"
"What's a life worth living if you're not in it" he teared up himself
"Mike.."
"Kate I love you, why would I want to continue on without you" he leaned forward hesitating his head in front of hers
"I love you too" she brushed her thumb across his bottom lip and meeting his lips in a soft kiss
"You know, I think that's the first time you've ever said that" he pulled back resting his forehead against hers
"You'd prefer me to say you give me butterflies?" she teased gripping his shirt in her free hand
"Well it is our saying" he smirked kissing along her cheek
"Mike, there's something else I need to talk to you about.."
"Hmm?" he continued to kiss across her face
"I'm late.."
"Late for?"
"No I mean…" she stopped when he pulled his head back
"You mean late as in late…" he took a quick glance down at her abdomen
"It's just something Swain said before it got me thinking.."
"How.. how um" he moved his chair back
"Maybe a month.."
"So you aren't sure?"
"The pain I'm experiencing Swain he said it could be related to a miscarriage or…"
"Hang on pain?" he arose from his chair
"I'm sorry I know I should have told…"
"Yeah you should have" he moved to the door
"Mike?" she looked at him sadly
"I just.." he pulled the door back and exited his cabin,
taking a deep breath Kate looked at the empty spot where Mike was previously sitting a small tear escaped down her cheek when he re-entered
she looked at him in confusion grabbing her hand in his he pulled her to stand
"Wha…" she went to question when he held up a Pregnancy test
"Swain keeps them on board for the female sailors.."
"I thought you were running out on me" she tried to hide her sadness
"Look I may be a little pissed that you didn't tell me you were in pain but Kate if you are.. I'd never run out on you not like that" he let her hand go placing the test in it
"I'm not sure if I want to know.."
"Better to know so your brain isn't going overtime with the constant question 'what if'"
"And if it is?"
"Then we work it out, whatever the results may turn out to be" he kissed her forehead before pushing her towards the bathroom and retaking his seat in the desk chair.
