Salt Cookies by King Caspian
The four Pevensies were gathered at the royal dining table. All of them were called by King Caspian, but what they didn't know was that Caspian had a little surprise.
Susan and Lucy were busy talking about the upcoming Christmas Ball in the palace. They were very excited to attend their first Christmas party after their return to Narnia.
Peter and Edmund were discussing about the newest addition to training grounds. Trumpkin along with Glenstorm had upgraded training equipment and made some changes in the archery range. All were keeping this as a secret from the two Queens as they all were planning to surprise them during the Christmas. They all knew as much as two Queens loved all rainbows and unicorns, their love for archery and knives were equally stronger.
Finally, the doors opened Caspian entered the room along with some trays a kitchen staff behind him. He was walking toward other Royals with a proud face and a huge grin on his face. Others couldn't help but return his smile.
"Well someone looks very happy today!" Edmund stated.
Caspian simply smiled at his friend's comment and turned to the kitchen staff ordering to bring the trays on to the table. Then he looked at Susan and gave a cute flirty smile and walked toward her. All heads followed the young king.
"I wanted to do something special for all of you. I know you all accept me as your family and treat me as an equal. So, I wanted to make something adorable and lovely for all of you." He pressed a quick kiss on Susan's forehead and walked toward the youngest queen.
He then knelt near Lucy. "I remember how you mentioned that your mother used to bake cookies for you. So, during the past week I have been learning how to bake chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies for you. I know they are not the best. Yet, I wanted to make my sister something that reminded of her old home." Caspian finished. Lucy quickly got up from her seat and pulled her brother into a hug.
"Thank you Caspian." She said while sniffing a little.
"As much as you wanted it to a secret Caspian, we know about your salt cookies." Susan said smiling at her lover.
Caspian's eyes grew wider, and then he started to blush in shame.
"Salt cookies? Now that is something I really should know. Sue do tell us" youngest king stated, ready to teas other king.
Susan smiled at Caspian and started the story.
A week ago*-*-*-*
Caspian has been taking notes and made sure not to miss any detail about the recipe and the method to bake cookies. When he heard how his new family loved cookies during the holidays, he came up with the best idea to surprise them. Especially, his new sister. He spent most of the time surprising his lovely queen Susan, who had his whole heart and then he had the chance to treat his brothers too while training and spending boys time. But, the little queen was the only one he never had enough time to spend with. Hence, he decided to do something adorable for Queen Lucy. Head Chef was generous and volunteered to teach Caspian how to bake cookies.
On the first day, of baking and his third day of learning. The head chef has left all the things he would need to bake. Once he made sure that young king was covered and fully understood the steps he left the kitchen for a family emergency, but made sure that his intern would be there to support the young king. However, the king was excited, so he did not spend the 10 minutes, when the intern asked him to wait until he grabbed cocoa and sugar from the pantry.
Caspian noticed a sugar container on the top shelf and added all the ingredients and started to mix. When the young intern returned with the things, the king was half way to complete the recipe. He was surprised that the young king has found all the ingredients in the kitchen as he was sure that kitchen did not have sugar or cocoa powder. The intern searched the surrounding. His eyes grew larger when he saw the salt container close to the mixing bowl.
He was right, kitchen was out of sugar, and the king has added salt, not sugar. He was too scared to correct the High King of Narnia. Of course, just like everyone he very much wanted to live, and telling the High King that salt container is definitely does not contain sugar would not help him. Poor boy started to sweat now. He checked his options; one, he can just leave the room without the other party not noticing. Two, he can tell the High King who defeated enemies during war and battles, that he added salt not sugar and not live another day, or three he can keep quiet and pretend not to notice anything. So, he picked the third option. Yes live longer.
When the king mentioned that the batter is ready, he only had to show him how to use the oven. Therefore, the young intern guided the king and taught him how to operate oven. King Caspian acted very satisfied.
After 12 minutes, when the cookies were baked the intern helped the king to take the tray out of the oven. King didn't even leave the cookies to be cool down, he grabbed the warm cookies and took the first bite and started to gag.
"This is all salt, not at all sweet." He said looked all upset and disgusted. The young intern was looking anywhere, but the king.
"Do you know what went wrong? I added all the ingredients according to the recipe." King stated taking his piece of paper made sure that he added all as per his note.
"Butter, flour, vanilla, sug…..ohhhhh…" he smacked his head. Then looked around the table, noticed the evil container that ruined his first every cookie batch. He tasted and shook his head.
"Of course it is salt. You said we don't have sugar. I should have waited for your return!" he said looking at the intern.
"Pardon me, my King. I couldn't correct you." He said in a fearful voice.
"It is ok. It is my fault anyway." King assured him. "Do you have time to make another batch?" He asked.
"Of course your majesty" young intern stated happily that the king was not mad at him. Together they spent another late hour making cookies. Some were over cooked; some didn't have much luck with the shape. As Caspian wanted them to be perfect his family. He spent another few turns with the chef learning more methods to bake.
Salt cookies were log forgotten, no one paid attention to the salty cookies that was left in the kitchen that day. Next morning when the maids and other kitchen staff came, they tasted the newly baked cookies that were how everyone got to know about King Caspian's newest finding; the salt cookies. Unfortunately it was not edible at all.
From the kitchen staff, to the maids the news travelled to one High Queen of Narnia. Susan's chamber maids were the ones who shared the story of Caspian's salt cookies. She felt proud that he is trying something like this. Also guessed he must be preparing something special for their family. Caspian used to mention how he wanted to do something especial for Lucy.
"So that was how I heard the story of King Caspian's salt cookies" Susan finished.
"Good Lord, I wish I could have tasted those cookies. That must have been awful" Edmund teased Caspian while laughing out loud.
"They weren't that bad" Caspian said defending. "This is the last time I am trying to do something for you Edmund" He said offended.
But it didn't stop Edmund, been the most sarcastic one of them, he continued to tease Caspian until Peter forbade him from talking for the rest of the evening.
"Caspian, don't mind Ed, you know he loves you right? He just teases you, because he appreciates your effort for us. You know that we all love you right?" Lucy came to Caspian's aid. Then he smiled, but glared at Edmund.
"Thank you Lucy" He said to the young queen.
Susan felt bad for sharing the story now. Caspian noticed that Susan is upset so he took her hand and gave a squeeze, assuring that he was not mad at her. "Its ok. Families tease each other. I should have known that Ed won't let go of something like this " he said giving a quick peck on her lips which she returned.
"Ohhhh can we please eat now?" Edmund said while making a face at his sister and friend's kiss.
"Ed stop it!" Peter said at his younger brother. He took a full bite of a cookie and looked at his friend.
"Caspian these is awesome, its not too sweet and its and very light. Oh man I am going put on weight now." Peter sang making every one laugh.
"Caspian truly these are awesome. We used to make same with Mom. Thank you Caspian." Lucy said grabbing a few more from the tray.
Caspian felt proud of himself. He also could have baked some when he was little, but his destiny had different plans. But, finally he has a family and that is all that matters now.
"You know we all should get together and have a family baking day." Susan suggested.
Peter nodded agreeing with his sister.
"We can even bake peanut butter cookies" Lucy said.
""Wait hold on, why don't we have a Christmas cookies competition?" Susan said. "This would be ideal for young ones to take part in celebrating Christmas. I'm sure everyone would love the idea!"
"Yes that is a splendid idea Sue" Peter agreed. "Also, we can have a special counter 'Bake with the King!' what do you say Caspian. People will be thrilled to see you baking?" Peter asked.
Caspian agreed. So they were indeed going to organise a baking cookie competition for this Christmas. Hopefully no more salt cookies!
