Sorry it has taken so long for me to update. My work is not from home, and then my kids came home university. Don't own Gilmore Girls.
"Lia" Logan calls his daughter.
She leaps into his arms and gives him a huge hug, "Daddy!"
"Merry Christmas, Baby!"
"I'm not a baby, I'm a big girl." Retorts Lia with a very defiant voice.
"Yes, you are a big girl, and Mommy and I have some very big girl news to deliver."
Lia turns around in his arms to see her mommy walking through the door with a huge smile on her face. "What is it Mommy? Daddy?"
Rory walks over and holds Lia's hand and asks, "would you like to be a big sister?"
Lia shakes her head yes with great enthusiasm. "Yes!"
"Well, good, because you are going to be a big sister to two babies." Replied Rory, pulling a shirt out of the bag she is carrying that says 'Big Sister x 2', "and I thought you might like to tell everyone at our Christmas party tomorrow."
"So, I can give everyone a big surprise for Christmas, like Santa does? Oh, that is" Lia is at a loss for words, but her joy is radiating and Rory knows she will be a great big sister.

Lorelai has found a new joy in entering her parent's old house, because it has become a home – a real home with lots of love and acceptance and her granddaughter. Luke smiles as he watches her walk right in without any hesitations remembering how just a few years ago she would stand there not wanting to ring that bell. He smiles more as he hears her call out, "Merry Christmas, oh, fruit of my loins! Where art thou? Come and hug your Mommy!"
Lia runs up to her with arms outstretched "Merry Christmas, Grandma! Yeah, you are here. What fruit comes from loins?"
Lorelai just scopes up Lia and grins, gives her a big kiss, and then goes to point to her chest with words forming on her lips of "your fruit, wait, what? You're going to be a big sister – times 2? Rory, does that shirt really mean what it says?"
"Hi Mom, yes and please come in and close the door." Rory gives a pointed looked at Luke who is still standing in the door with his mouth hanging open from the news. Rory is delighted it had the effect she was hoping for. She knew her mother would be thrilled. The rest of the older generation would be torn between happy about the twins and aghast about the shirt for a Christmas Eve Gilmore-Huntzberger party. Oh, well, every 3-year-old should be able to just have a fun day and dress casually. Before Luke could close the door, Mitchum, Shira, and Emily could be seen approaching the door.
So, Rory took Lia out of Lorelai's arms and headed to the door with a big grin and her daughter facing outward. The three stopped and read the shirt, while Shira and Mitchum smiled; Emily beamed. Rory greeted everyone warmly with lots of Merry Christmas' being said, focusing most of her energy on her grandma and ushered them into the living room.
Emily looked around, "Oh, Rory, it looks – well, sometimes it is hard to see the changes, but they are absolutely lovely. The house is a warm and inviting home and with two more on the way, "gesturing to the shirt, "when by the way? And I do think that is a good thing."
Logan walked in with all of the usual suspects in tow; he approached the new arrivals, giving each a smile and small hug "Merry Christmas! Emily, good afternoon. Mother, Father – welcome. Please come in, yes, we have known for a couple of weeks, there are 7 more months to go – due in August and we just found out that there are twins, so Merry Christmas / Happy New Year!"
Mitchum strode over to Logan, "Well, son, this is a wonderful Christmas present, and adding to the family is certainly the best present for those of us who already have everything and a great way to start off 2020! I think it will be a special year knowing we will be welcoming two new Huntzbergers into the world." Mitchum turns toward Rory extending his arms for a hug, "Rory, Merry Christmas, and congratulations! I hope they wait until their teen years to give you too many problems."
Rory smiled as she remembered yesterday's round of morning sickness, "They caused me some issues yesterday, but if they take after their sister it will be manageable. Please, please, come in – Logan, can you get drinks for everyone? Given the unseasonably warm weather, I mean really 61 on Christmas Eve, we decided to grill today, so please come through, there will be burgers, steaks, and chicken – ready in about 15 minutes; Finn is manning the grill. The pool house has more food too."
Logan raises his eyebrows at the mention of Finn and the grill and Rory laughs, "ok, manning in quotes there, but if he thinks he is in charge to the grill with an apron on, then we have less of a chance of a naked Finn." Logan nodded in agreement, grabbed a glass of wine and sparkling water from one of the many trays circulating the room, handed it to Rory and they clinked glasses "Salud!" followed by a proper kiss.
Rory came up next to Emily, "Grandma, I really do hope you like the house and weren't just being polite. We have made a lot of changes, but I did keep the dining room and Grandpa's office the way they always were, so many wonderful memories in those two rooms. I will happily give you a grand tour after the festivities." Emily gave her a hug with a smile, "Thank you, Rory for keeping a couple of spots, but it is your house, and I am thrilled you are making it a home for your children to grow up in. There were never any strings. Grandpa wouldn't recognize the place, but he sure would approve."
Lorelai waited for Rory to finish speaking with her mother, "hey kid, why didn't I get a head's up on this? Feeling a little left out over here."
"Sorry, Mom, we really did just learn of the twins yesterday. We didn't want to announce the pregnancy at Thanksgiving as that was only 6 weeks and with everything going on – traveling between your place and Honor's, I was actually a little nervous that maybe something might happen."
"Ok, I can understand that. Are you happy, kid?"
Rory's face lit up, "Yes! 2020 is going to be incredible – I start the book tour for Gilmore Girls: the Early Years in late February into early March – already booked onto 3 late-night shows: the Daily Show, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and The Tonight Show – did you know that they tape in the afternoon? At least I will be home to see the actual airing. My publicist is lining up a couple of the early shows and talk shows, I am hoping for Ellen, but we will see. At least I am not doing the bookstore rounds this time, it is nice to have an established name, babies are due in August, I am starting to outline another book, writing an article for The Atlantic, and Logan and I are planning a trip to South Korea for April."
Lorelai grinned, "Well, you no longer fit into the 30-something gang."
"Yup, and we all have Lia to thank for that one! Oh, Mom, we need to sync our calendars later, I will need to book you for some Lia time while I am traveling."
"I like that plan, the best job on the planet – Grandma! Oh, don't tell Shira that you are booking me, let her think you are using a Nanny for all of this." Lorelai said conspiratorially. Rory smiled and knew that Shira wouldn't fight her mother for the weekends, she was still a 2-hour grandparent and please have a nanny accompany the child just in case a migraine came on, but at least she was trying; which, honestly was more than Rory had expected. Lorelai continued, "Hey, did you notice that she hasn't been smoking as much recently, at least since Lia came along, maybe having a granddaughter has made things better. Wonder what twins will do?"
The Gilmore Christmas party was not the one that Emily and Richard had hosted for all those many years with the formal stuffy air, but the guest list had also changed dramatically. While it still included a broader guest list than Rory really wanted, it was more focused on the children. Logan had decided to let his parents host the huge formal work Christmas party the previous weekend. This was the Gilmore-Hutzberger compromise party, mostly friends and family with a few friendly faces from work. Emily was pleasantly surprised that the Christmas party was actually fun and she found herself on the floor in the new playroom, that Rory and Logan had added when they moved into the house after the birth of Lia, playing with her great-granddaughter. After awhile Lorelai came in and surreptitiously took a photo of her mother sitting there with a barbie in one hand a truck in the other – making them talk to each other while Lia laughed and made her truck and barbie dance around. "Hey, Mom!"
"Oh, Lorelai, oh, dear, please help me get up."
"Great-Gram, please don't go," Lia called out.
"I will come back, dear. I just wanted to talk to your Grandma." Emily gave her a pat on the head and nodded to her daughter. Emily turned to Lorelai as if to say, why did you interrupt my fun, but instead she asked, "Well, are you still upset that it was Logan?"
Lorelai thought about a sharp retort but decided it was Christmas, she had 2 more grandchildren on the way and her mother had just been sitting on the floor playing barbies and trucks with her great-granddaughter, maybe she could be positive. "After 3 years, you know Mom, never thought I would say this and really mean it, but I am really glad it was Logan. He has supported her 100% - with her career, provided a loving home life, stepped up as a father and been a doting husband. He reminds me of Dad, and that says a lot."
Emily smiles, "Yes, he does remind me of Richard – he is a good man. I was worried there for a bit, but it has worked out well. Hopefully, twins don't scare him off."
Logan is standing behind Emily and gently taps her shoulder and hands her a glass of white wine, "I'm not going anywhere, these twins are going to be adored and spoiled, but not too spoiled or Rory will cut me off from the credit cards." They all laugh at the comment and look to find Rory standing on the other side of the room with Luke on one side while she is talking to Lane getting advice on twins.
"Rory?"
"Oh, excuse me Lane. Yes, Luke."
"Merry Christmas. Ah, congratulations." Luke is speaking in a slightly awkward way that raises the radar for Rory.
"Merry Christmas to you too and thank you." There is a moment of awkward silence, "Yes? I feel like you want to ask me something. And I know that April doesn't need tutoring."
"well, yes, can I … well, you know, tell Jess? Or do you want to tell him yourself? I will be seeing him tomorrow afternoon and he asks about you. Not like asks 'asks' about you, but just asks."
"Yup"
"Yup?"
"Yup, you can tell Jess. I think it will make it easier if he already knows when I see him on the 26th at Mom's. I mean, I know you and Mom are staying here for opening presents tomorrow with Lia, but we are coming to the Hollow for Boxing day and seeing April, Doula, and Jess, right?"
"Absolutely."
"Great! Anything else, Luke?"
"Nah, I am happy for you is all; Merry Christmas"
Lorelai comes and puts her arms around Luke, "what was that about?"
"Nothing important, just checking in. Great party, much better than the ones we first attended?" replied Luke
"Yup, the kid is good at throwing parties that aren't so stuffy, but she still has the salmon puffs, and apple tarts – YUM!." Lorelai replied as she looked around for her Granddaughter who was once again with Emily on the floor playing barbies and trucks. She lets it go as she knows that Emily will return to Nantucket leaving her with Lia full time. Plus, seeing her mother on the floor is just about the best Christmas present ever."

Lia jumps out of bed, running through the house calling out, "Santa has come, get up, get up!" Leaping on her mother at 5 am and then bouncing to her father's side of the bed with so much joy. Rory, just moans "coffee" and Logan says "babies". With an emphatic, but eyes still closed, voice "if you want to live long enough to see me birth these babies …" Logan gently lifts up Lia, gets out of bed, and then dances around with her, singing about Santa. Rory rolls over and opens her eyes, she might be tired, but there is nothing that makes her heart sing more than seeing this little dance; so she pulls off the covers and joins them. They make their way downstairs and find the living room is completely cleaned up, the presents are under the tree and the stockings on the fireplace are full.
"Ok, Lia, here is the deal. You can open your stocking and play with or eat everything in there. Daddy and I will go back to bed until 8am when we will return to eat breakfast followed by opening presents."
Lia cocks her head and thinks about this, "Ok, but you and Daddy can only go back to bed until," looking at the clock on the wall and really calculating, " 6 am!"
Logan jumps into the negotiations, "Mommy and I sleep until 7 am."
"Hmmm, 7 am if we can open one present from Santa before breakfast." Is countered
"Deal!" Logan and Rory call out together, as they pull down the stocking and start back upstairs.
"Wait, when do you open the stocking?" queried Lia
"Oh, well," says Rory looking at Logan knowing that their stockings really don't have anything in them. "We can open them with the rest of the presents."
Logan reaches for Rory's stocking, and Rory just looks at him, "Logan, you didn't …we said one present for each of us, just one and I know there is more than one gift under that tree from you."
Lia is looking confused, "But Mommy, the stocking is from Santa not Daddy and you were on the nice list, Daddy said you were on the nice list, so Santa had to bring you something. Daddy, weren't you on the nice list too, didn't Santa bring you something for your stocking?"
Emily is standing at the top of the stairs, she had orchestrated the stockings after the party and overseen the clean-up and setup while Rory and Logan had been conversing and then putting Lia to bed. "Maybe Daddy and Mommy just aren't used to being on the nice list, it has been a long time; so the need to look."
Rory takes the stocking, "Well, I guess I shouldn't have made any assumptions. There does appear to be a few items in the stocking." Rory pulled out a PEZ dispenser and started laughing. "Oh, I see, that Santa has started digging into my childhood memories. The three of them sat down on the floor and opened their stockings, while Emily, Luke, and Lorelai sat on the steps watching and listening for a few minutes before making their way down the steps to discover that Santa had left stockings for every member of the house who woke up there that morning. Including the staff who were working in the kitchen to pull together an early breakfast as they too had been alerted to the early hour by Lia's gleeful discovery of Santa's arrival.
As the morning progressed, no one actually got back to bed, each took turns showering and changing from PJ's to Christmas clothes throughout the morning, knowing that the afternoon for Emily, Logan, Rory and Lia would be spent at the Huntzberger house while Luke and Lorelai would return to Stars Hallow in preparation for the third Christmas party at the Luke and Lorelai's house on Boxing Day.
"Logan, can you carry Lia up to her bed and then me?" Rory asked as she leaned on Logan as they walked into the house after the very, very long Christmas day. "Ace, I think I need someone to carry me, how about we just fall asleep here?" "On the rug? In front of the door? Ok." And with that Rory slinked down the door and lay on her side falling asleep almost instantly. Logan realized she was far more tired than he thought possible and it was probably the twins that were taking an extra toll on her body, so he carried his 2 ½-year-old daughter upstairs to her bed, tucked her in, and kissed her forehead, "Goodnight and Merry Christmas my precious little Lorelai Louise Gilmore-Huntzberger, you are the best present every day, but today was extra special knowing this is the first real Christmas you will remember." Logan walked back downstairs and gently lifted the woman who had given him the best gift ever taking her upstairs he gazed at her knowing that he would carry her anywhere any time and she would never weigh anything in his arms because it was love that carried them. Laying her on the bed and placing her head on the pillow, he pulled up the covers, kissing her forehead, "goodnight my love, my Ace, my Rory, my Lorelai Leigh Gilmore-Huntzberger – thank you for asking me to marry you, thank you for giving me a marriage full of love and joy; instead of the dynastic plan."
Rory rolled over, Logan climbed in next to her, arms and legs found their comfortable warm spots.
