Riding The Lightning- 1:14
Harita's POV
"Sarah Jean and Jacob Dawes butchered what? Twelve girls?" JJ asked.
"Thirteen counting the girl that was just found. Hilary Dickson. Disappeared 15 years ago. Buried her under Sarah's mother's living room." Gideon explained.
"Nice last name. Dickson" I muttered. JJ smacked my side.
"And you don't understand why we call you a child." I threw my hands up in an 'I surrender' position. We were driving to Florida State Penitentiary. Gideon, Morgan, JJ, and I were in the first SUV, Hotch, Garcia, Elle, and Spencer were in the second one. JJ and I were sitting in the back while Gidoen was sitting in the passenger seat and Morgan was driving. We were going over to pay a litte visit to Sarah Jean and Jacob Dawes, the murder of 13, maybe more, people.
"You think that was the last victim?" I asked.
"Well, that's what we are here to find out." Gideon answered. "Sarah Jean Dawes."
"Media called her the 'Ice Queen'." JJ recalled.
"That's how they interpreted her demeanor during the trial." Gideon explained.
"You see it differently?" Morgan questioned.
"Na, I didn't say that."
"She killed her 2 year old son and 12 teenage girls." JJ exclaimed.
"She only confessed to the murder of her son Riley." Gideon corrected.
"Well, she hasn't cooperated with any request to interview her."
"Well, if she doesn't talk now, she's going to take that story with her to old sparky." Morgan stated.
...
"Here it is." Morgan announced as we drove past the gates. Behind them were protesters chanting some sort of shit.
"They call themselves 'The Women of Jacob'. Trying to look like his victims." Gideon stated.
"Creepy." JJ shuddered.
"There's only 12 of them. Should we tell them they're one short?" Morgan joked.
"At least." Gideon replied. "I think we will find Hilary Dickson was by no means Jacob's last victim."
…
*CUE INTRO*
(For one of the 'pictures' in the intro, imagine Harita fidgeting with a pen, looking at a map with her left eyebrow raised.)
…
We had 35 hours until Sarah Jean and Jacob Dawes would be executed to their death. We were all currently in a room given by the guards.
"1985, there's a string of missing girls reported in Northern Florida. Police subsequently got an anonymous call from a woman claiming to have seen Jacob with some of the girls." I read from the files.
"Did they ever find out who the anonymous woman was?" JJ asked.
"No." Reid simply replied.
"Police interviewed Jacob Dawes, also present with Sarah Jean Dawes and their 2 year old son Riley. Police were suspicious so they came back 3 hours later with a search warrant only to find that Riley had vanished. They also eventually found the dismembered bodies of 12 missing girls buried in the ground underneath Jacob's workshop." Hotch explained.
"Fearing that the police were on to them Jacob figured Riley would slow them down so he ordered Sarah Jean to kill him and dispose of the body." Reid added.
"Sarah confessed to killing Riley but never admitted her role on the deaths of the girls." Gideon emphasized.
"Ya, but she never denied it either." Elle argued.
"Well according to Jacob, Sarah Jean was fully complicit in the targeting abduction, and murder of all 12 and well, now 13 victims." Morgan read.
"Prison records show that Jacob is a sexual psychopath. It was inconclusive on Sarah Jean though, they said her demeanor was more like that of a war victim?" Reid queeried.
"And as with all sexual psychopaths, Jacob is obsessed with the idea of the total possession of his victims. He's shown no remorse or guilt." Hotch stated.
"Oh, well, Jacob saw Sarah Jean as a possession, somebody to control, to dominate." Gideon acknowledged.
"Just so we're clear, they have agreed to these interviews?" A guy randomly said.
"Yes sir." Gideon responded.
"Oh, I'm sorry, who are you exactly?" Elle asked.
"I'm Sam Shapiro, their appeal's attorney." Mr. Shapiro responded.
"Not only have they agreed to them, they were initially requested by them." Hotch handed Mr. Shapiro a piece of paper showing the evidence.
"Ya, I can't get them a stay of execution." Mr. Shapiro admitted.
"Garcia, remember 75% of all communication-"
"Is non-verbal." Garica finished for Gideon.
"Hotch, Harita interview Jacob, Morgan, El-"
"We're not going to get anything new." Hotch interrupted Gideon.
"Well, find out a way to ask." Gideon ordered. "696 Hennessy Street, Jacob and Sarah Jean's home stood for demolition. Take a look around."
...
Everything was going somewhat smooth. Jacob didn't see me, so he wasn't horny. The guards had to get him out of the cell and put him into the interrogation room, which we followed. That was also going smoothly until Jacob saw Sarah.
"Sarah Jean! You look so fine, baby cakes. This was meant to be, our names will live forever!" Jacob expressed like a maniac.
"Let's go." Hotch ordered.
"It's a beautiful thing!" Jacob expressed.
"Let's go!" Hotch yelled.
"Listen, it's a beautiful thing!" Jacob shouted as the guards dragged him away. Hotch and I followed them to the interrogation room. I waited outside, watching, as Hotch sat down in front of Jacob.
"You want to see a trick?" Jacob asked as he laid down a deck of cards. "Pick a card."
"You're a diagnosed psychopath." Hotch said.
"Sexual psychopath. Now pick a card."
"How many other girls did you kill?" Hotch asked.
"Do you ever smile? I mean, it's hard to trust a guy who never smiles."
"Are there more bodies?"
"If I told you that, what would I have left for myself?"
"You can help these families get closure before you die."
"Oh, pass. Come on, just one trick. It's a good one. Pick a card. Come on. Just one card."
...
24 hours left.
We decided to take a break, since we were getting no where. That was until I got an idea, one that wasn't pleasant, but would work. Though I had to convince Hotch a heck of a lot. It led me into doing all of his paperwork for 2 days in order for me to help.
"And who are you?" Jacob asked as I walked into the room. He was smoking a cigarette. I was wearing my normal day-to-day clothes. I was wearing a white shirt, black pants, and white Converse. For this occasion, I had my hair down, ruffled, to make me 'look sexier' as Morgan would call it. I hated it but if I had to do this to get some victim's names, it was worth it. I mean you can't blame me. Who would want to let their 2.5 feet, long, thick ass hair down, free and in the wild.
"You can call me Dr. Harita." I replied as Jacob stood up.
"Well, hello-"
"Sit down." Hotch interrupted, but Jacob did as told.
"Hello, Harita."
"It's Dr. Harita." I emphaized on the Dr.
"Ouch." Jacob hissed as I sat down in a car across from him.
"That was a nice touch bringing in the hottie." Jacob complimented as he shuffled the cards. Well it wasn't necessarily a compliment. It was more disgusting."You really want to know if there were others, don't you? I'll tell you what. Draw a book, you win, I'll give you another girl."
"So there are more." Hotch stated.
"Do we have a bet?" Jacob asked.
"What if you win?" Aaron asked.
"I get to smell Dr. Harita's hair." Jacob admitted.
"No." Hotch replied as I scrunnced up my nose.
"Oh, come on!" Jacob complained. "All she has to do is lean over and I get to smell her hair."
"No."
"I thought you wanted answers."
"Go to hell."
"It's okay, Hotch." I tentatively replied.
"You see that?" Jacob pointed out.
"It's okay, Hotch." I repeated.
"Harita deals. Can't let you deal from your own deck." Hotch said as he took the cards and handed them to me. I took the pile and started shuffling. Once I finished and made sure it was completely shuffled, I dealt them out.
"You know how long it's been since I could actually play with someone? All I've had is solitaire. Cards?" Jacob asked.
"Two." Hotch replied as I handed him two and took the two he gave me.
"I think I'll play these." Jacob said. "What do you got?"
"I've got aces and eights, two pairs." Hotch replied as he placed down the cards, showing Jacob.
"The dead man's hand. I should have had that, but then of course I would have lost. Straight to the Jack." Jacob proved his point by placing down his cards. He had a seven, eight, nine, ten, and a jack to finish if off. "And unless the rules of poker changed since I've been in here, you lose."
"Oh, sorry." Hotch interrupted. "Full house. This is higher." Hotch moved the eight to show that there was another ace right underneath.
"Man!" Jacob exclaimed. "You would have been so nice. But to answer your question. There are no other bodies." I got up, and as I was about to leave, Hotch stopped me.
"Harita. Oh. The governor's just commanded us to give a stay of the execution to Sarah Jean." Hotch recited what he heard from his earpiece. I took mine off just cause it was easier that way.
"What? They can't do that." Jacob howled.
"They don't believe she killed your son." Hotch explained.
"She killed him. I could tell you exactly where he's buried." Jacob hollered.
...
Jacob told us that the body was buried under the gazebo he built, which Hotch ordered Elle and Morgan to go and check. We all went back to the room that was set up for us. Morgan called saying they found a body. So, while we were waiting for an ID, I put my hair in a simple ponytail and scrumed my bag for some snacks. I took out a bag of Sour Patch Kids and started munching those, occasionally giving a few to my colleges.
"Guys, the body's ID is coming through." Garcia announced. "It's not Riley Dawes. It's Ashley Farley. She was 14 when she was killed."
"Why would Jacob give us another victim? He completely goes against his need for power manipulation and control." Reid questioned.
"Taking the secret of an old victim to his grave satisfies that need." Gideon answered.
"Why give it up? Like, what's the payoff?" I asked as I handed a Sour Patch Kid to Garcia.
"Sarah Jean's the payoff. Sarah Jean will be his last victim. And be the ultimate of control." Gideon replied.
"Gideon, check this out. Guess who used to be the Farley's house cleaner." Garcia pulled up a picture of Sarah Jean. Hotch and Gideon left the room.
…
5 hours left.
"Garcia, pull up the interview with Sarah Jean." Gideon ordered as he walked into the room.
"What is it?" Spencer asked.
"Exodus 2:3." Gideon replied.
"Moses." Spencer recalled.
"Hebrew sons were supposed to drowned. Moses's mother sent him down an isle in a basket." Garcia played the videon of the interview.
"Where's he buried?" Gideon asked.
"All that matters is that he's safe." Sarah replied.
"Where is he?" GIdoen asked.
"He's in a better place."
"Jacob didn't bury Riley anywhere." Gideon said, not the Gideon from the interview, the present one. "Because Sarah Jean had already taken care of him."
"Then she did kill him" JJ replied.
"No, she sent him somewhere where she believed he'd be safe." I concluded.
"He's alive." Garcia exclaimed.
"We're running out of time. This is the proof we need to save Sarah Jean." Gideon stated.
...
2 hours left.
"Check all police and hospital records dating back to September 1990." Gideon ordered Garcia.
"You know, you should check local newspapers to see if anyone reported any abandoned babies." Spencer added. "She really only had a maximum of 3 hours between police visits. It was 4pm so traffic was pretty heavy. Whatever she did with Riley had to be local."
"1990, 3 babies were abandoned in September." Garcia announced.
"3 year old boys?" Gideon asked.
"None." Garcia replied.
"Why doesn't she just tell us where Riley is?" I asked.
"She'll protect him for as long as Jacob is alive." Gideon answered.
"Look, they are being executed within an hour of each other. What hope do we even have to find him in time?" JJ exclaimed.
"You know, it's quite possible, she doesn't even know where he is anyway." Reid argued.
"No, she knows." Gideon insisted. "I've got to get into her cell." Gideon left the room.
...
He came back 5 minutes later and gave a picture of a boy to Garcia to see if it was Riley.
"That's Riley. It's her son, isn't it? Someone tell me it's him, please." Garcia pleaded.
"I know I may be blind, with or without glasses, but I swear that does look like Riley, well more matureed." I responded.
"JJ circulate this photo to the press. See if anybody recognizes this boy." Hotch ordered.
"Do I say who we think he is?" JJ asked.
"No just put him out as the missing person." Hotch replied. There was this buzz that came from Garcia's computer.
" What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means Jacob is being moved to the execution chamber." Spencer replied as Hotch left the room.
"She cut around the photo so no one can read the text." Reid was examining the photo of said older Riley. "He was 2 when he disappeared. This boy is 16 or 17. If he's Riley, it would mean it's a recent photo."
"Once Jacob's dead, you think Sarah Jean would tell us if this is Riley?" JJ asked Gideon. He only responded by walking away.
...
Jacob Dawes is gone. Dead. Now all we have to do is find Riley, and prove that Sarah Jean is innocent.
"Only people Jacob allowed Sarah Jean to know were the family she cleaned for." Gideon announced.
"Sarah Jean worked for wealthy families all over Hampton. Let's go over all the families in the state of Florida who were looking to adopt in 1990 and let's see how many lived in Hampton." Hotch ordered.
"Families looking to adopt, hundreds." Garcia repeated.
"How many from Hampton?" Gideon asked.
"Uh, 3 families. The James's, the Coulfied's and the Sheffield's."
"Looks like the Sheffield's removed themselves from the list in October 1990 and then moved out of Hampton." JJ added.
"That's one month after Riley vanished, where did they go?" Gideon asked.
"Keystone Heights. We got a match on the photo. It was in the local daily news." Garcia exclaimed.
"Call Morgan and Elle, tell them to get to the Sheffield's house." Gideon yelled as Hotch did as told. Gideon left the room to go and see Sarah Jean.
"Byran Sheffield." Spencer read.
"Local cello prodigy 17 year old Byran Sheffield won a scholarship to play cello." I read. "Pretty nice life he's living.
...
Too bad Sarah Jean couldn't live her life. We did find her son, but Sarah convinced Gideon to let them go, and that she didn't want Riley to be Jacob's last victim. Gideon eventually let go. Jacob Dawes- Dead. Sarah Jean- Dead. Riley Dawes- known as Byran Sheffield- Alive.
When I first watched this episode I was confused as fuck. Also, JJ scene in this episode is so underated, like it is queen.
