-chapter 7 - Beetle in the Big City
During one pleasant sunny day, Lori and Lincoln were driving inside Eliza (her new Sedan Convertible) to Great Lakes City. It didn't take that many guesses why they driving there. The blonde's eyes went wide as the massive skyscrapers that dominated the landscape slowly rose from the horizon. "Here we are closing in on Great Lakes City! Yesss!" She growled in excitement.
Facepalming Lincoln figured this was the reaction his sister would give. His reaction from his sister... mostly just a groan. "Can she get any more lovesick than last time?" He muttered before noticing the readers. "Oh hey there, we're taking a trip to Great Lakes City as you could've guessed by Lori getting so excited.''
Sighing with hearts in hearts eyes Lori Loud thought of the future she'd be starting with Bobby. "Sorry, Lincoln, I'm just getting so dreamy about starting Fairway University and never my leaving my Boo Boo Bear's side!"
Glancing at the readers again Lincoln explained what their plans were. "Yeah we're visiting Bobby and Ronnie Anne today, so Lori can spend time with Bobby more. I'm tagging along because Ronnie Anne's friends asked me to hang with them for awhile."
While her brother was enlightening the reader's on his plans, a certain twinkling lit up Lori's eyes. Seeing as how Ronnie Anne got along so well with her brother she had an idea. "Uh Lincoln now that I'm graduating soon, I'm gonna literally enjoy it here. Maybe some day you'll move here, get an apartment, date Ronnie Anne, then marry her off." She giggled in excitement.
Quickly Lincoln made a discomforted face at that remark, again his sisters kept up their ''shipping'' of him & Ronnie Anne. First off they weren't a couple, they were just friends. And only that, something that might not ever change any time soon. "Hey what happened to you mentioning that?"
Stubborn as always her brother scoffed at the idea Lori tried another lighter approach to the subject. "Sorry, but I just know somewhere she's got something for you. Call it women's intuition." Sighing happily Lori asked what Lincoln's plans were, since he'd been keeping it very hush-hush from her (mostly to rile her up). "What about you twerp? Are you looking forward to see Ronnie Anne again?"
Nodding the boy had to at least agree about that. "Well, yeah Lori. Of course. She and her friends invited me to have some fun on the town. Its gonna be a royal blast."
As the pair drove along Lincoln was feeling a little thirsty, and popped open a can of soda and just as he was going start chugging it a loud buzzing was heard as well as a hefty smack into his arm. It was Akira! How'd he get there? He must've smelled the sweet scent of the soda. "Akira!? How'd you get here? You are literally becoming a stowaway... Ehh might as well take you along with us. Besides now you get to meet your master's girlfriend.'' Lori teased with a wink.
Facepalming Lincoln knew this was coming. Only a matter of time he thought. "Again Lori, we've been over this Ronnie Anne is not my girlfriend. For the umpteenth time.'' Lincoln grumbled.
The insect looked to his master, its eyes blinked confused. He never once mentioned he and this girl were together. Sure they talked via the computer but was all the insect thought of it. "Yeah Akira this happens a lot. Get used to it cuz I haven't.'' Lincoln grumbled putting its sunglasses on.
-downtown
After the two reunited with those close to them, meanwhile at the downtown area of Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne, Lincoln and her circle of friends walked along the sidewalk. But the centerpiece of Lincoln's visit was his pet, clutching his sleeve. "Cool beetle Linc.'' Nikki, Ronnie Anne's blonde galpal said looking it over.
Still the tomboy latina saw something was off about this bug. "Uh first off Lame-o is it wearing sunglasses?'' Ronnie Anne said giving the critter a second look.
"It is.'' Lincoln firmly stated.
Hopping off his bike Casey another of her friends had to ask the next obvious question. "Why?'' He asked wondering why, one of his eyebrow going up.
''Oh my sister Leni made them so she wouldn't be creeped out by him.'' Lincoln told.
Well that did it, Sameer thought. Casey asked a silly question and got a silly answer for it. "Uh... yeah that explains it.'' Sameer said rolling his eyes.
"Looks like a rhino beetle to me. My mom brings in a few at the zoo. Y'know every now and then.'' Sid recalled pushing a lock of hair from her face.
Suddenly Nikki's stomach started growling, loudly no less! She grinned and blushed, embarrassed. ''Eh, my stomach is talking... ''
''Gotta agree. I'm getting a tad hungry too.'' Laird admitted his gut growling loudly too.
''Well might as well head back to the bodega then. I bet her grandma can whip us up something.'' Sameer suggested.
All of them gave a unanimous uh-uh in agreement, it was to time to fill up their skillets. As in their stomachs.
-Casagrande apartment
Once the kids were settled at the latina's apartment another big question was brought up. Just where did Lincoln get Akira from in the first place? "Ok Lame-o just where did you Mr. Bugboy there from? Last time I checked you don't find bugs like that around ere.'' She asked.
Thus began Lincoln's long tale of how he was given the oversized beetle. ''Well its a long story but nothing too hard to follow. You see it was a Friday and I'd just scored some SMOOCH tickets. Me and my friends were all going but the bell rang, Mrs. Johnson asked me to stay after class for a second. Turns she'd been given some Japanese Rhino Beetles for the class to study by Ms. Shrinivas. The bad part? Her class didn't want anything to do with them. So they asked me to keep it. Convincing my parents into letting me keep wasn't hard really. Then he grew, pupated and hatched as an adult. That's when the real fun started. Get this he gave Lynn and El Diablo huge goose-eggs. Lynn wanted me to practice some hockey with her, I didn't want to and the snake for some reason doesn't like him. He even gave our canary Walt the suplex! At school Mrs. Johnson was even inspired by him to start our studies on DNA, genes, and mutation earlier than planned. Akira even helped me and the gang beat Girl Jordan at dodge ball. Then the town was under attack form pumpkins being tossed by the two dingledorks... Hank & Hawk. Luan made short work outta 'em. And that was all during some 20 days ago.''
Of course Lincoln left out the fact Akira was given Lisa's experimental serums, that would only freak the city kids out. To the Hispanic tomboy all this happening in just 20 days was insane. Despite having some crazy skateboard tricks the dodge ball to Nikki event was something she wished she could've seen. ''Wicked cool!'' Nikki said her eye wide as golf ball.
That was pretty cool, and to think a bug had a hand in it all, or as Ronnie Anne thought in her own humble opinion that is. ''That thing helped you beat Girl Jordan in dodge ball? If the whole gang hadn't been in it I'd call you crazy.''
Squinting at Akira, while scratching her chin Ronnie Anne still found it hard to believe this tiny thing won a round of dodge ball against the girl. She was a demon at the game. The beetle lifted its shades blinking at the Hispanic tomboy, which was oddly kind of cute. Naturally Sid had to tease her a little about it. "Well looks like somebody's made a new friend eh, eh?'' She joked playfully patting her best friend's shoulder.
Of course as you might've thought, Ronnie Anne glared at her not amused. By that point Ronnie Anne's grandmother, uncle and aunt had returned from their grocery shopping, but the instant the ladies laid eyes on Akira they screamed up a storm. Panicked Rosa threw her arms up in the air. ''Eeeyah!
Doing the exact same thing was Ronnie Anne's aunt. ''Ahhh! Eeeeek!'' Shrieked her Aunt Frida.
Finally regaining enough sense the elderly woman grabbed a newspaper ready to squash the insect who dared invade her kitchen. "Mija! Get that filthy cucaracha out of my kitchen!''
"Yes! Yes! Do it! Rapido dear!'' Frida added still freaked out yelling to her hubby.
Jumping in front of the beetle the tomboy tried explaining just what was going on. "But Frida its not a cockroach... '' Ronnie Anne tried to explain but was cut off by her uncle.
But then her uncle Carlos gave it a closer inspection. With a quick mm-hmm he knew exactly what is was. ''Uh dear that isn't a representative of the insect order Blattodea... otherwise known as cockroaches and termites. Lincoln's specimen is a Allomyrina dichotoma. A Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle. Otherwise known in its native land as the Kabutomushi or Helmet Beetle. In fact mushi is the Japanese word for insect, and kabuto for helmet, literally owing to its resemblance to the samurai helmet.'' The man explained.
Naturally after this long-winded explanation by Carlos Frida, Ronnie Anne and Rosa Casagrande simply blinked. Her jaw dropping Frida even pushed Rosa's mouth up. It was one of those situations if you ask about something... you might just get told it. In very detailed fashion no less. "Huh? Ok then uncle.'' Ronnie Anne said letting the matter drop, adding the fact she didn't understand all the big complicated words her uncle said most of the time didn't help matters.
''So its not a cockroach my little mija?'' Rosa said still unsure about all this.
Now she knew her son Carlos was a smart man, gifted with a high IQ and frankly wasn't the type to make up this kind of explanation. Despite hardly understanding a word he mentioned in it. Again he confirmed Akira was not a roach. ''Nope. Not even related to 'em.'' He added shaking his head.
Both of the women shrugged and breathed a sigh of relief thanking the stars the apartment didn't have a roach infestation. Quickly Frida decided in her own way to capture the moment with Lincoln and his pet, in photo form. ''Come on turn that horn this way so I snap a striking profile shot!'' She gently asked as the insect turning its head ever so that the photo showed off a great angle of its body with his horn.
The crisis over Rosa went to cleaning the apartment as she usually did, but this time would be different. And not for the better. As she went about lifting a chair her ankle went out from under her. ''YAH!'' She yelled falling to the floor. Trying to get back up she winced. ''Oh! I must've twisted my ankle... Ow! Ah, my ankle. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow. I can't move it... Now who will lift the furnishings so I can clean?''
Despite being a rough and tumble type on the outside Ronnie Anne was about to jump in and do it for her. She did it for Bobby back in Royal Woods after all. Only Lincoln jumped in even quicker with the save. "Oh Akira can help with that. I got a plan, Akira can you lift up the furniture? And while he's doing that Ronnie Anne help your grandma. In fact we'll all help.''
All of her friends gave the elderly woman a string of thumbs up. That deeply touched her heartstrings. ''Ahh such wonderful manners your boyfriend has my little mija.''
Well there was the boyfriend routine, again. ''He's not my boyfriend abuela... '' The girl in question grumbled.
It was the same old story with her family too, they were always ''shipping'' the two. Despite just being good friends. After all why complicate things? And the two youngsters weren't really into the mushy romantic expressing of love either. Still the grandmother giggled over ruffling up her grandchild's feathers.
Quickly thanks to Akira great strength doing the heavy lifting along with her granddaughter & friends helping her Rosa Casagrande was able to finish her cleaning. A little unorthodox in practice but the results spoke louder. The place was as clean as it usually was. Running a finger across the table Rosa found not one bit of dust. "Ahh now this is clean. Now I can make a few snacks for you all. And you Akira how about a spicy chicken taquito as a special thank you for all your help.''
Though the idea sounded tasty what with the kids mouths watering with drool, Lincoln still had something to point out. "Uh actually he's a vegetarian, you have any vegie ones?''
The older woman wasn't unfamiliar with vegetarian people, but not so much with the insect kind though. Still it was a challenge and she'd do her best to rise above it. "No sweet child. But I can whip up a few with peppers, onions, and beans only. A chef must always improve but I'll need 20 minutes or so to make his.''
Hearing a familiar set of voices in the living room Ronnie Anne's cousins: Carlota, Carl, and CJ knew one thing was happening. They'd brought Lincoln along. Time for some fun! The latina's oldest cousin was about to say something but Ronnie Anne cut her off right then and there... if a certain gleam in her eye meant anything. "No Carlota before you even say it. No I'm not wearing your skirt idea. So put it the back of yer mind and forget it.''
"Hey there where's your great gazelle of a sister at?'' Carl asked suave as ever, he was a miniature of Clyde. Or what Clyde used to be like. Only Lincoln facepalmed from that.
The reunion of CJ and Lincoln was way more positive. ''Ronnie Anne brought Lincoln! YEAH!'' He cheered grabbing the ashen boy in a huge bear hug.
Despite being only a few years older than him CJ owing to his Down syndrome, sometimes he didn't know his own strength. ''UGH! Boy CJ... You've gotten a lot stronger. You been working out?'' He choked out.
The boy whipped out a set of fake swords, ready for some sword fighting. While part of him wanted to, he didn't want anything to eat up his time with Ronnie Anne's friends. But he also didn't want to hurt CJ's feelings either. ''Can we do it some other time buddy? I'm hanging with Ronnie Anne and her friends today. But how 'bout Akira has a sword fight with you instead?''
The middle child of the Loud's pointed to his pet beetle perched on the corner of the table, Akira was then reaching to wield one of the swords. Flipping down his shades Akira struck a fighting posture. At first CJ was bit taken back sword fighting with a bug, but quickly got over it. ''Well ok. But I'll hold you too it after all I'm fair.''
And thus began the duo's clash of swords, as Akira with great strength swung down his blade! The hefty blow hit CJ's toy sword as a plastic sounding clang was heard. Still the insect wasn't holding back as he pushed his weapon further, actually making CJ's legs buckle a bit. Seeing his older brother possibly in a pickle Carl asked if everything was ok. And Akira to hold back a little. "You ok bro? Sure ya don't want Bugly there to ease up a bit?''
Straining against the tiny animal super strength CJ was putting everything he had to hold his ground via his plastic sword. "No problem... See I'm havin' fun.''
Despite being a bit of a smart aleck Sergio the family parrot knew the kid was having a hard time against Akira's brute force. "Squawk! Even I don't need a crystal ball to know where this fight's going. The pits, with CJ falling in one.''
Quickly CJ leaped back as Akira thrust forwards as the boy dodged out of the way. While his brother and sister looked worried Ronnie Anne told them to lighten up a bit. "Relax CJ's got this you two.''
Again still carrying her camera Frida had to memorialize this cute event for posterity, snapped a photo as Akira locked blades with CJ. The two jumped away from the other and lunged forwards yet again. Speeding up his swings Akira struck, only CJ spun around with the toy saber blocking the strike. To Uncle Carlos this reminded his brain of something. "This heavily reminds me of the feudal sword duels of the medieval era involving the chivalrous knights. In fact only the knights could afford plated armor if... ''
Putting a finger to his mouth shushing him was Sameer. They really didn't need to hear his trivia today. "Uh no offense Mr. Casagrande but we don't need the commentary.'' Casey politely said shushing him.
''Hah! Guard!'' CJ said blocking another of Akira's sword strikes.
Swiftly Akira tried to whack the boy on his leg, only CJ very narrowly countered blocking the with the very tip of saber. It was pretty fun watching the two go back and forth with their sword fight. By now her stomach was growling. ''Hey abuela are those taquitos almost done? I'm getting a bit hungry here myself.'' Carl asked.
Watching his grandmother mention them being ready soon by pointing at the timer Carl continued watching the sword battle Cj was doing. He was enjoying himself at every moment. "Hey Carlota, you can't pay for entertainment like this.'' He joked to his sister.
With a few speedy thrusts Akira managed to swipe CJ's sword from his hands, which flew up into the air and landed on the carpet. But instead of finishing off the boy Akira gestured for him to grab his weapon and keep fighting. Snatching his sword he again locked blades with Akira, who was slowly being pushed back.
Then suddenly CJ fell to his knees as the beetle simply sputtered along to the table, also worn out from their duel. In fact he was sweating a bit. "Whoo! Now was fun! You're really strong Akira. Like really, really strong. Thanks!'' To that the beetle simply waved.
By then Rosa Casagrande's taquitos were finished, now fresh from the oven. The scent they released was wafting all over the place. Grandma Casagrande's cooking was the best smell there was. ''My delicious taquitos are done. Dig in everyone! Eat! Eat! Eat them all up. There's plenty for all of you.''
Just like that they did dig in, with Lincoln cutting up Akira's vegetable taquito into smaller & more easily chewable but steadily Akira began munching on the well made food. Its master asked if was any good. "So how is it Akira? Is it any good?'' The bug quickly nodded as it continued to chow down.
Taken back by the tiny creature's great strength, docile nature, yet its very sophisticated palate. "I would have thought I'd see the day an insect enjoying my cooking so much.''
But the chicken taquitos everyone else were having were the deal breaker. If there was one thing Lincoln had to say good about the Casagrande's it was Rosa's cooking. She was simply a wizard in the kitchen. How she'd accomplished it he'd probably never know. But then something occurred to him.
"Ooh these're good. Uh Grandma Rosa have you thought of maybe... I dunno selling them? My father dad's restaurant Lynn's Table could always use more authentic Hispanic food. I'm sure my dad would give you all the credit for the recipe. It could even be a conversation starter about it. Like its history for one thing.''
The boy brought up a good point, as everyone in the family knew the elderly woman was a very gifted cook. After all Rosa took pride in serving her family a tasty well made meal. But the idea of selling them didn't seem like something she'd get behind. "Actually that's a good idea abuela, we could make a lot at the mercado .'' Carlota pointed out.
But her expression, as she did have the sense of mind to realize the bodega might not always have the best business on a consistent basis. The fiasco with the Hi 'N' Buy grocery place was still fresh in her mind. The mercado knew its customers best. And extra ways to get income might come in handy now and again. Well after an awkward silence she spoke. "Hmm... I'll think about it. Just in case the mercado has a bad dry spell. Never hurts to be prepared my child. I'll think about the offer of your father over. We might be able to come to some kind of agreement.''
"You really think these are enough to sell well?'' Laird questioned, despite being extremely tasty he had some doubts.
"I know they can Laird.'' Nikki agreed chomping down another of them.
And so the serving of taquitos eventually were all eaten up, with the heavy pan now bare as a cue ball. While her ankle was still sore Rosa was feeling much better now. Still she wasn't well enough to be doing any heavy lifting. "Akira would you be a dear and lift that pan to the sink, please? Once you're done I'll need a few more put away. I'll open the cupboard and you can store them.''
The super strong insect then went about its work, first taking the baking pan to the sink applying some soap even. This pleased the grandmother greatly. She'd no idea the boy had raised it with such great manners. Then Akira went about putting away the various pots and pans like she told him.
While everyone else were starstruck by the beetle's impressive skills, Lincoln was again annoyed by it all. "Again everyone he's a beetle. Not a pack mule.'' He mumbled under his breath. ''Oh, hey there well I guess it's not all bad... well, at least everyone's in a good mood. Bye for now people.'' Lincoln said waving goodbye to readers.
-to be continued
I hope you'll enjoy this story so please review it. This was a pretty hard chapter to write up because of all the dialogue and since Spanish isn't my first language (I know only English/I'm not bilingual sadly) I had to use Google and the Casegrande wiki for the Espanol terms of endearment. Drop me a message and tell me how well I did. Please read and review this and my other stories which range from: Yokohama Night Monsters, Power Rangers Dimension Legends, ELG The Series, EL Digital Saviors, Cybertronian Invasion, and Maverick Hunter KLN to satisfy your craving for bizarre crossovers. Ok for references... I'll give 50 points to all the readers, whoever can correctly guess all the references the characters make. Be it anime, manga, comics, books, live-action, animation, or games it doesn't matter. See if you can guess any. Something else many chapters are puns off words or phrases (like the show does/take a look and you'll see it).
Oh just a warning... This might be my last story update of 2020. Maybe... If I can update something else but this is likely the last update. For now. Since 2021 hopefully will be much more fruitful.
Also to writer RedHood223 I'm watching ''Lost Trust'' closely. So far so good. Part of this story was inspired by yours though only the part where Mrs. Johnson asks Lincoln to stay after class for a minute. And Girl Jordan getting beat in dodge ball is a shout-out to ''Lincoln gets Limber'' by Just4FunFiction to a certain chapter. You're both welcome.
But what will happen in the next chapter? Next time Royal Woods hosts a pet show and Lincoln enters Akira, however Lana's old dog rival Lacey St. Claire is determined to beat them at every turn. Who will win in this battle of pets?
