The next morning, by the time I woke up, Mio was already dressed and ready to go and dad was gone. I got up and showered and got dressed.
I checked my phone as I pulled my shoes on. No notifications.
I sighed and made my way to the living room, "Why are you up so early?"
Mio sighed as she turned the TV off, "I woke up when dad left, he was arguing on the phone with someone."
I nodded and made my way to the door, "Ready?"
She shook her head, "Not at all. By the way, is the chapter outline due today?"
I shook my head, "No, I don't think so."
She raised her brow, "Then why did you spend all night doing it?"
"I've told you," I shrugged, "I like to get things done early so I have more time to read and I'm not stressing if I overread."
She yawned, "Had me thinking I was slacking."
"Well," I raised my brow, "Aren't you?"
"Touche."
Our walk went by rather quickly, traffic was light.
Mio leaned against the locker, "Man, one of us needs to grow a pair and start driving."
I nodded, "I agree."
She smirked, "You could always ask your new bandmate to give us rides. I'm sure he'll say yes."
I nodded, "Yeah, I'll shoot Bakugo a text right now."
She took my phone from my hands, "That's not what I meant and you know it."
I smiled, "You're so bad and tough in class around him but you're truly no better than I am around Denki."
She sighed, "Yeah, I can give it as well as him in a group but I'm not going to volunteer to hang out with him more for a while."
I started to feel less alone with my feelings. It's nice knowing she's going through the same thing.
We went to class early so I can read and Mio could lay her head down.
I got a few pages in when I heard the class door open, "Oh, hey! It's our singer."
I looked up at Denki and Jiro as they walked in, Jiro sat in front of me, "Hey, did you get any of the group messages last night?"
I nodded, "Yeah, sorry, I was doing homework and it was late by the time I saw the messages."
Denki shrugged, "So, that's why you didn't respond."
I played with the pages of my book, "I'm sorry."
Jiro shrugged, "It's not a problem."
I grabbed my phone, "I can send the link to my most played playlist in the group chat."
Jiro nodded, "Yeah, sounds good. Wanna meet up after school, we can go over songs and when we pick some out, I can get the music for the boys and me to learn."
Denki leaned toward Jiro, "Oh man! This is so cool! It's so official! Learning music! We're gonna be so cool!"
I noticed Denki was pretty close with Jiro and come to think of it, they've always been kinda close.
I felt the heat in my cheeks… I wonder if they're more than friends.
"Hey, guys!" Ochako pulled me from my thoughts as she and everyone else piled in, "How does going out this weekend sound?"
Denki nodded, "I'm down!"
Deku looked excited, "We were thinking of a beach trip. It's supposed to be really warm this weekend, the last one before fall, so, we thought it would be perfect."
I looked to Mio, who sighed, "Count us out."
Mina frowned, "What? Why?"
Mio sat up, shrugging, "Maki and I don't drive so we don't have a way there."
Sero shrugged, "I don't either, I'm gonna ride with Kirishima and Bakugo. There's gotta be someone you can ride with."
Denki's arm shot up, "You guys can ride in my car! What about it, Jiro? You can ride with me too."
Jiro shrugged, "Count me out."
His jaw dropped, "What? Why?"
She shrugged, "I've got a thing with the folks."
Denki pouted, "No fun."
Ochako sighed, "We can reschedule."
Jiro shook her head, "You guys go ahead."
Before any more could be said, the bell rang and everyone took their seats.
I felt a little down. I can't shake the thought. I mean, it doesn't matter if he is but it would be majorly disappointing if he and Jiro were an item.
I like him but more than that. If it ends badly and I end up enjoying this whole band thing, it could that come to an end.
Mio leaned closer, "I was talking to Momo the other day and Denki is more single than a pringle."
I raised my brow.
She shrugged, "I saw that look. And if something was going on, Momo would know, she's nosier than a male dog chasing a female dog in heat."
I shook my head, she's such a gossip, "I know what you meant but that doesn't make sense."
She sighed, sitting back, "I'm tired. Sue me."
As the class went by I had trouble focusing. My eyes kept getting drawn to the window. Clouds have rolled in, fall isn't too far away.
I wonder if it will really be warm for the beach trip.
I saw the wind bending the branches of the tree, the chilly season is almost upon us and I can't wait. Sitting under a tree in the park with a blanket and a book? It's just what I need.
I sighed and brought my eyes down. Yellow hair catching them. He looked like he was concentrating harshly on what he was doing. Getting a little frustrated and erasing what he was doing.
I smiled. He's cute frustrated.
I looked back to the window, I don't want anyone to catch me staring. It's bad enough Mio and Tokoyami know. I can't let anyone else hear about it. I'll never hear the end of it or worse, he'll find out.
When the bell for lunch rang, I grabbed my book, "Mio, I'm gonna get a small snack and go read, will you be fine?"
She shrugged, "I can just hang out with Ochako. Enjoy your book."
I smiled. Happy to have alone time with my book.
I went to the cafeteria and grabbed some potatoes and juice and made my way to a tree in the back. I used to read here all the time if I had to be alone at lunch.
I was shocked as I walked up to my tree.
Denki was sitting under my tree, knees pulled to his chest. He looked upset, like really upset.
I don't think I've ever seen him anything but happy. And I don't think I've ever seen anyone else over here.
"Hey…" I said, softly, "Are you okay?"
He looked up, wiping a tear from his cheek, "Hey!" He smiled, any sign of sadness seemingly gone, "What's up? I'm good!"
I sat down in front of him, my heart feeling for him, "What's wrong?"
He shrugged, "I don't know what you mean."
I sighed, "Denki, it's okay. You don't have to pretend."
His smile fell, "Sorry, I don't want you to worry, I'm fine, I swear."
I bit my lip, "I don't believe you."
He looked away.
I felt the butterflies but I ignored it, I put a hand on his arm, "You can talk to me. I'm a good listener. I promise."
He looked back at me, debating on if he should open up. He took a deep breath, "I just feel so stupid."
I raised my brow, "Why?"
"I'm not good at school," He leaned back against the tree, "I have a hard time staying focused and I can't figure a lot of stuff out. My ADHD makes me stupid."
I was shocked, "ADHD?"
He nodded, "Yeah, I got diagnosed when I was little. I don't like people knowing."
"I didn't even know. My lips are sealed, I promise." I pulled the zipper across my lips.
He smiled softly, "Thanks."
I tapped my book with my fingers, "I don't think you're stupid. It may take a bit longer but I know you'll get there."
He seemed surprised.
I grabbed my book, "Hey, why don't I read to you? It used to make me feel better when I was a kid, my mom would lay in bed and just read aloud."
His eyes lit up, "Yeah! I'd like that."
I couldn't hold back my smile as I flipped open the book, starting over on page one.
Denki hung on my every word. I don't think I've ever had anyone pay such close attention to me but he looked happier than he did when I walked up.
When the bell rang, Denki frowned, "Awe man, I was really enjoying it."
I stood, dusting my skirt off, "You can borrow the book when I'm done."
He shrugged, grabbing my bag for me, "I'm not much of a reader but I like you reading to me! It's easier to follow like that. I get too distracted when I try to read on my own."
I blushed.
"Do you…" He rocked back on his heels, sighing, "Do you think you could read to me again, sometime?"
The smile formed on its own, "Yeah… I would like that."
Denki and I walked back to class together, making me a little self-conscious.
Mio's jaw dropped when we walked in together but she smiled.
I sat at my desk and thanked Denki for carrying my bag.
He smiled his usual bright smile, "No problem."
I felt happier through the rest of class, enough so, Mio noticed.
She stood next to me at the lockers, "Did you spend your lunch with Denki Kaminari?"
I nodded, "He was at my spot when I got there. I didn't think it was polite to ask him to move and that's my favorite reading spot so I compromised."
She nudged me, "Well, how was it?"
I smiled, "It was nice."
"Hellooo, ladies." Denki sang as he walked over to us, "Ready to head over to the music room?"
We both nodded and followed him.
Jiro and Tokoyami were already there, but, no Bakugo.
Jiro rolled her eyes, "Why am I not surprised?"
We started going through the songs on each other's playlists as we waited for him. We each chose one from each playlist.
I was impressed by Denki's and Tokoyami's playlists, they're pretty good. Denki's is diverse and Tokoyami's got some pretty cool rock, some of these I don't think I'd be comfortable performing.
When Bakugo finally showed up, he ignored the comments on his lateness.
He sighed, pulling his phone out, "Here's my playlist and I looked through your guys' at lunch, Jiro said one from each. These are my picks."
He slammed a piece of paper down.
I was surprised. Yeah, he's late but at least he's prepared.
Jiro took some notes and sighed, "Alright, give me a few days and I'll have the note sheets ready for each of these songs and we can start practicing by next week."
Bakugo sighed, "So, we're done?"
She nodded, "Yeah, we're good."
We all said our goodbyes and Bakugo was the first to leave. I swear he's an odd one.
I sighed and walked over to Mio, "You ready?"
She shook her head, "Not really. I'm not in the mood to walk. Do you think dad will come to pick us up?"
I shook my head, "Probably not. He's working."
"I can take you home!" Denki smiled, swinging his key on his finger.
I shook my head, "Oh, no, you don't have to do that."
Mio stood, "I'm down, let's go."
Denki shrugged, "I don't mind, really."
I sighed and followed him out.
The drive was quiet, nothing but his music playing softly.
When we got to the house, Mio jumped while mumbling a thank you and made her way to the door.
I sighed, "Thank you, Denki. You really didn't have to."
He grinned, "It's my pleasure, besides, I owe you one, thanks for today."
"You're welcome." I smiled, slightly blushing, "I'll see you tomorrow."
He waved as I got out.
That boy.
His smile.
His eyes.
His smell.
My heart… I swoon.
