Jilytober – A Party
It had been two weeks since James Potter had accidentally told Lily Evans he loved her. Lily Evans had done precisely nothing about it since. Once again she found herself sat in the corner of the common room watching the marauders huddled around a
table.
"What do you suppose they talk about all evening," she mused out loud.
"Who?" Marlene asked Lily huffed and swatted her knees. "Oh, the boys?" Marlene said drily, "I imagine they are planning the end of term party."
Lily frowned "I though McGonagall said no parties?"
"Well yes, she always says that doesn't she, but it's the end of term and we all know she has a weird soft spot for Potter and Black." Marlene stretched, "It'll be the night before the train."
"I don't have long left then," Lily said half to herself.
"For what?" Marlene, leant forward, a gleam in her eye.
"Nothing," Lily tensed and returned to her book, her pink-tinged cheeks giving her away. Marlene sat back in her seat, a smug smile on her face.
The end of term party was in full swing, music played loudly as Gryffindor students pressed closely on the temporary dance floor. Lily stood to one side, watching Marlene get entirely too cosy with Sirius Black in her opinion. She sighed and shifted her gaze to James who sat on the other side of the room, holding court with Peter and a group of fifth year girls. He had studiously gone back to ignoring her after his outburst, despite the fact Lily had been trying to corner him ever since.
"Knut for your thoughts?"
Lily jumped and sloshed a little butterbeer on Remus' arm. "Remus, sorry, I wasn't paying attention." She reached out and patted his sleeve, anxiously trying to dry the spots. He placed his hand on hers, pulling her gently away.
"It doesn't matter," he smiled at her, "so those thoughts?"
Lily blushed again, she felt she was doing that all the time at the moment. "James," she sighed, and awkwardly fiddled with the hem of her top. "We ummmm had a fight, sort of,"
Remus raised his eyebrows at her, "That's not unusual."
"No, not particularly, I wanted to know why he didn't feel my magical signature—"
"He did" Remus interrupted. "He just pretended not to."
"Well, yes, alright he pretended, and I wanted to know why and then he sort of told me that he loved me." Lily glanced up at Remus, who looked thoughtful.
"He did?" he asked her.
Lily nodded in confirmation and went back to fiddling with her top. "I'd like to speak with him, but he's avoiding me. Or he appears to be anyway," she broke off with a sigh.
"I can arrange it," Remus nodded in James direction. "If you make sure you are outside the kitchens, in half an hour."
"The kitchens? What, where are they?" Lily looked confused, "How will you get him there?"
Remus waved her off airly, "Prongs is like clockwork, the party is starting to wind down, he will start to think of his stomach, Pads is occupied," he nodded back at the dancefloor where Marlene and Sirius were still dancing cosily together. "He'll go alone because I won't let Peter go with him."
"Why are you helping?" asked Lily suspicion creeping into her voice.
"Because, I'm fed up of listening to James pining, and I think you two should chat." Remus smiled at her and headed in the direction of the food table.
"James, the food is finished," Remus called over to James, and winked at Lily, gesturing at the portrait hole.
Lily panicked, crossed the room, avoiding flailing arms and legs around the dance floor and slipped out. She paused in the corridor, realising she hadn't actually pushed Remus for an answer as to where the kitchens where located. She leant back against the wall, her hands pressed against the cold stone.
She could almost hear the throb of the music, she closed her eyes and leant her head back. Suddenly she couldn't just feel the beat but hear it as the volume increased dramatically. She shot up straight, turning towards the portrait.
"Potter?"
"Uh Evans, hi," James scrubbed awkwardly at his neck but didn't reach for his hair she noticed.
"Hi," she smiled shyly, determined to be nice. "I wanted to talk to you,"
James smiled back politely, "Well I'm just off to the kitchens right now, food table is empty. Can't finish a party with no food," he gave her a lopsided grin and this time he did muss up his hair.
"Great, I'll come," Lily said decisively.
"It's a bit of a walk Evans, I'll go," James edged past her, and Lily reached out to touch his arm. She jumped when he flinched.
"Sorry, Evans!" he exclaimed and this time Lily jumped. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and then stepped forward. She slipped a hand through his arm and looked up into his confused eyes.
"I'd like it if you would show me where the kitchens are." She gave him a gentle tug and James seemed to recover himself.
"Right, certainly, Evans. Anything for you," he blushed then and she looked away.
A short while later, they returned, arms laden with food. They stepped through the portrait hole and found the party was actually still in full flow. James dumped the food across the table, calling out as he did so.
The makeshift dancefloor emptied out a little as students crossed over to check the latest provisions. Lily looked up at James, who suddenly seemed full of nervous energy. She placed her hand again his arm and this time he didn't jump.
"Dance with me?" she asked, green eyes full of hope.
"If you like," James replied, but his expression was guarded. Lily pulled him onto the dancefloor, sticking her tongue out at Marlene as she passed. She manoeuvred them into the corner and began to dance along to the beat.
James seemed to give pause and then grabbed her hands, twisting along with her enthusiastically. Lily pressed her advantage and stepped closer, as she pulled James towards her she used her wand behind his back to cast a disillusionment charm. She watched carefully as his eyes widened in response.
"So you do notice my magic," she said smugly.
"Evans, I told you already, I notice you," James pulled her closer still, and Lily's breath hitched. She looked up at him, hips still gently swaying to the music. "What did you cast?" he asked her in a low tone, leaning closer as he said it.
"Disillusionment," she replied, her voice breathy. She pocketed her wand and brought a hand up to his hair. James touched her chin, lifting her face towards his.
"Did you still want to talk?" his practically purred at her.
Lily, closed her eyes. "Not anymore,"
Suddenly he closed the gap and kissed her, his lips pressed hungrily to hers. She responded, tugging on his hair to pull him closer to her, moulding her body against his. James ran his hands down her sides, gripping her hips tightly and she pressed against him. He pulled back, and Lily reluctantly let him slip from her grasp.
He flashed her his trademark grin and then tugged her hand. "Come on, I know a place we can continue this type of talking."
Lily laughed, ducking out of the portrait hole after him.
