Maura stood in Jane's kitchen unloading the groceries she brought. Jane sat in silence on the bar stool at the counter nursing a beer. "You're quiet tonight," Maura stated as she pulled out some pans to begin cooking. She took a sip of the red wine she just opened.
"I want to tell Danvers about us," Jane admitted openly and matter of factly. Jane left no room for disagreement. She knew what she wanted.
"What brought this on?" Maura stood on the other side of the counter blank expression on her face, the wine glass resting in her hand. "Is this about what happened in the locker room today?"
"How do you know about that?" Jane's eyes shot up at Maura. While Jane pretended it didn't phase her, it hit her to the core. The fact that the rumors were spreading across teams in the league. Now she was dating someone who she… loved? Did she love Maura? This is such a new emotion. Was she just thinking this was love, because Maura has been there more in the last four weeks than her family? She loved Katie like a sister, but this felt different. She hated every second they were apart and loved every minute they were together. She wanted to tell the world about her and Maura. Post it on a billboard and shout it from the rooftops.
"People talk Jane," Maura laughed. "Especially when drama occurs. Price mentioned how you were going to punch Baker. I have to say as your doctor, I do consider punching a strenuous activity and therefore do not condone it. But, as your girlfriend, I appreciate you standing up for yourself."
"But, I didn't stand up for myself. I am gay, and I know there are rumors; However, I've never felt the need to address them until now," Jane rubbed her forehead in frustration. She wanted the locker room to stop talking about the 'rumors', and start talking about how hot and how off limits her girlfriend is.
"You can certainly address the rumors without outing us to coach. You and I are still new. Let's not stray from this bubble yet. Give me a couple of weeks and we'll reevaluate it, okay?" Maura placed her hand over Jane's. "Let's just be us. Please?"
"Okay," Jane sighed as she pulled her girlfriend's hand up to her mouth and kissed it.
"Now let's get ready for dinner." Maura smiled sadly at the brunette. "Just a couple of weeks."
The two stood side by side, hip against hip, by the stove, stirring pots and adding seasonings, as the apartment door opened. Jane leaned down to kiss Maura, as they heard Jane's family walk in.
"Janie," Frankie hugged his big sister. "If you hate this idea, just know that it was all Maura's idea," he whispered in her ear. She laughed as she hugged him back.
"I know, thanks little brother," Jane released her brother and turned towards her mother. "Ma," Jane stated plainly. Not making a move to lean in for a hug.
"Jane," her mother nodded in her direction and placed a tray of dessert on the counter. Jane peaked under the lid to see her mother's homemade cannoli's resting. Her mother made her favorite dessert, maybe she didn't hate her.
"Dinner will be ready in a minute," Maura smiled. "Would anyone like anything to drink? I have a nice bottle of red."
"Wine would be great," Angela stated.
"No, no wine for Ma," Frankie stated.
"What is this I hear about you leaving Boston?" Angela asked, holding up The Boston Times article.
"That's an old article. I'm honestly surprised you are just mentioning it haven't," Jane sneered. She felt a light smack on her arm.
"When was I supposed to mention it?" Angela cried. "When you were here with your girlfriend or when you were in the hospital?"
"You could've mentioned it at any time," Jane looked towards her mother. "You were too busy pretending everything was fine. But if you had mentioned it earlier I would have told you that Boston was recently added to my list of options. I had a choice between Orlando, Houston, and Boston."
"Have you made a decision?" Angela prodded.
"I have actually," Jane stated plainly. "I signed the contract extension with Boston. I have good chemistry with the team, the team doctor's great," Jane winked at Maura. "And there's good support for growth as an athlete."
"So your decision to stay had nothing to do with your family?" Angela began to raise her voice. "Did you even think about us while you were making your decision?"
"What family is that Ma?" Jane stated calmly. "You've made it very clear that you and I are not family anymore. I could have kept in touch with Frankie and Tommy via phone and they could have visited. But, you and I are not family right now," Jane crossed her arms. "Not until you love me for who I am and stop trying to get me to apologize for it. Until you accept that your daughter is gay," Jane pushed her mother. Angela's tears began to fall. "You left me for a year and then pretended that it was not a big deal. It is a big deal mom. And until you get that, we're not going to be able to be a family again. I won't not talk about it because it makes you uncomfortable."
"Jane, that's not what I want," Angela reached for her daughter. Jane took a step back, discomfort with her mother touching her was evident on her face.
"Well then your actions clearly do not reflect what you want," Jane crossed her arms as she stared straight at her mother. "What do you want?"
"I just want you back in my life Janie," she cried. "I want to love you again. But it's hard."
"I still love you Ma. I do. But you're going to have to change your entire belief system if you want to love me again. Until you do, I don't want you to be in mine and Maura's life."
"Jane," Maura whispered, placing her hand on Jane's shoulder. "Don't you think that's a bit harsh?"
"No, I don't want our relationship to be thrown into this family drama. I want to be wanted for who I am. What I don't want is to be loved for who I was before you knew. This is a part of me now," Jane spoke. "Until you get what that means for you. I don't think this is a good idea."
"Jane, please?" Angela cried. "You're still my baby," Angela wiped the tears falling from her face.
"I'll still come to Sunday dinners, and we can still talk on the phone. But I don't want you to drop by my apartment or demand anything of me. We can work on repairing this. Slow and on my terms."
"Okay," Angela agreed. "On your terms."
They all sat for dinner in relative silence. Frankie tried to get over the awkward silence as he kept telling stories of his days as a beat cop. Maura laughed and tried to look interested in Frankie's stories. Jane sat and stared at her plate in silence. She didn't look up at her brother or turn her head towards her mother. She felt Maura's reassuring hand on her leg under the table. The only form of comfort she's had since this morning.
Maura brought over the tray of cannoli's and placed them in the center of the table. Jane sighed, she loved these things and she missed them so much. She took one and finished it off in two bites. "Thank you for bringing the cannoli's Ma," Jane finally looked at her mother's saddened face. "I really appreciate it."
"You're welcome Jane," her mother began. "I know they're your favorite."
"You're right," Jane smiled back.
Jane sighed as her mother and brother walked out of the front door. She closed and locked the door before heading back to the kitchen to clean up the mess. "No, let me," she pushed Maura out of the way. "I appreciate you making this happen tonight. Even though it's not how we were expecting it to go. I still appreciate it," she leaned in to kiss Maura and gently shove her away from the sink so she could finish the dishes.
"You know how much I want this to work out for you," Maura smiled as she leaned against Jane. "I'm here to support you. Anything that you want, anything you need" she sighed deeply. "If you really want to tell Danvers about us then I support it."
"Nah," Jane smiled. "We can live in our bubble just a little bit longer," Jane turned off the faucet and dried her hands on the dish towel. "Just know, this," Jane reached out to take Maura's hips and pull her closer. "Is going to last. And telling everyone is only the next step." She pulled her in for a kiss.
Maura smiled, "movie or bed?"
"Bed, definitely bed," Jane pushed Maura towards the bedroom and continued kissing the blonde.
