Elena's POV: (Opening thoughts)
Oh god. Edward told me this morning he wants me to introduce him to Charlie... I am dreading this but at least my twin sister will be here.
"Hey got you another one," I tell Charlie as he cleans his gun and Bella sits down eating and I pass Charlie a beer.
"Thanks," he tells me blowing on the barrell.
"I have a date with Edward Cullen," I say just coming straight out with it and Bella places her fork down and smiles at me.
She is enjoying this.
Charlie stops what he is doing and glances at me. "He's a little old for you isn't he?"
"No," I tell him and I glance at Bella who is still smirking. "He's a junior. I'm a junior. I thought you like the Cullen's?"
He reaches for his beer.
"I thought you didn't like any of the boys in town?" He counters.
"In Elena's defense," Bella says and we both glance at her. "From what I know the Cullen's don't live in town."
I nod and smile at her in thanks.
"Technically she's right," I tell her and he swags his beer as he glances at me with an unhappy look on his face. "He's right outside."
He glances at the door. "He is?"
"Yeah he wanted to meet you officially and say hello to Bella," I tell him and glance at Bella who looks a little shocked.
"All right," Charlie says before locking his gun like he is preparing to shoot it. Not that it'll work on my boyfriend but I cannot tell him or Bella that. "Bring him in."
I stand straight and stare at my dad.
"Dad, could you be nice?" I ask him and I can see Bella is fighting a laugh. "He's... he's important."
Dad does a sign that he has a halo around his head. Yeah right. My dad an angel.
I go to the door and let Edward in. He smiles at me as we head back into the kitchen and he glances at my sister.
"Hello Bella," he says and she nods. "It is nice to see you again."
Bella looks shocked that he spoke to her. "Nice to see you too Edward. Take care of my sister."
She then heads upstairs probably to ring Jake as she waves by at us. Edward then turns to Charlie. While Edward was greeting Bella Charlie had stood up.
"Chief Swan." I smile at Edward's formality. "I want to formally introduce myself. I'm Edward Cullen."
Charlie looks like he is trying to keep polite. "Hi Edward."
Edward glances at me and then back to Charlie.
"Elena won't be out too late tonight," he tells him as I glance at my dad. "She's just gonna play baseball with my family."
"Baseball?" Charlie sounds like he wants to laugh and I glare at him and I hear Bella laugh from upstairs.
"Yeah sir that's the plan," Edward nods.
Charlie scoffs.
"Bella's gonna play baseball," he chuckles again before rubbing his neck.
"GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!" I hear Bella yell down.
"EVIL TWIN ALERT!" I yell back up at her and I hear her laugh and so do Charlie and Edward.
"I'll take good care of her," Edward tells Charlie. "I promise."
"Let's go!" I tell Edward but Charlie stops me.
"Hey," he says and I turn to him. "Still got that pepper spray?"
I nod and as we head for the door I yell up to Bella. "I'LL GET YOU BACK ONE DAY!"
She laughs even harder.
We end up parking not far from a field. Seems like Edward and his family actually are playing baseball and this is not just a ruse to hide Charlie and Bella what we're really doing.
After climbing out of the monster truck that Edward had borrowed off of his brother Emmett, Edward grabs a baseball cap and begins to place it on my head.
"Since when do vampires like baseball?" I ask him.
"Well it's the American past time," he says while he concentrates on straightening the cap on my head. "And there's a thunderstorm coming. It's the only time we can play. You'll see why."
We head to a large field where the others are waiting. Two questions. Is a baseball field ever this large? And are the bases supposed to be that far apart?
Rosalie and Carlisle are seeing who bats first with the bat and when they are finished they shove each other playfully.
"Glad you're here," Esme says placing her arm around my shoulder. "We need an umpire."
I head with her to the first base but Emmett speaks from behind me. "She thinks we cheat!"
I smile at Esme.
"I know you cheat," she tells him and he seems more amused as we stand where she can catch. "Just call them as you see them Elena."
"Okay," I chuckle.
Edward is on first base to catch, Rosalie is first to bat. There is a clap of thunder and Alice smiles.
"It's time," she tells me.
Rosalie nods and Alice does a graceful throw of the ball. I am so shocked at how fast the ball comes around I didn't think Rosalie would be able to swing the bat round in time. But to my surprise she did. THAT was loud.
The sound that was made as the ball and bat hit was so loud it actually sounded like thunder and I know it would be heard for miles.
"Okay now I see why you need the thunder," I tell Esme as Rosalie begins to run around the plates and Edward disappears. "That's gotta be a home run right?"
Esme shakes her head at me. "Edward's very fast."
Rosalie begins to slide to home plate, Esme suddenly throws her arms out and to my disbelief she catches the ball and knocks Rosalie out just as she hits the home plate.
Everyone looks at me as I lean down next to Esme.
"You're out!" I tell Rosalie.
"OUT! WHOO!" Emmett says and when his girlfriend glares at him. "Babe come on it's just a game."
Rosalie glares at me and then gets in my face as she passes me when we are both stood again. Edward comes out of the woods looking happy.
Carlisle is up to bat. He points his bat at Alice then he prepares to swing. Alice throws and Carlisle hits and the ball goes flying way out into the field. As Carlisle begins to run around the field I suddenly jump at a large noise. That sounded like two boulders hitting each other.
Turns out it was both Emmett and Edward crashing into each other as they both go to catch the ball. Carlisle hits a home run.
"What are you doing?" Edward chuckles as he shoves Emmett playfully.
Alice throws for Jasper who hits the ball and Emmett climbs a tree to catch it and I hear Rosalie whisper behind me. "My monkey man."
When Alice throws for Rosalie again she hits ball so fast it blows my hair around my face.
"STOP!" Alice cries out as Rosalie begins running.
What's happening? Everyone freezes and Edward seems to hear whatever is wrong with Alice and he automatically freezes.
Everyone gathers around me and Esme pulls me away a little. This cannot be good whatever it is.
"They were leaving," Alice tells Edward as they both approach where I am stood. "But they heard us."
Edward grabs my elbow and pulls me in the direction of the car. "Let's go."
"It's too late," Carlisle stops him.
Edward thinks for a second before turning to me.
"Get your hair down," he tells me and I do pulling it around my face.
"Like that'll help," Rosalie points out and Edward clearly hates that she is right. "I could smell her from across the field."
"I shouldn't have brought you here," Edward tells me and I stare at his worried expression. "I'm so sorry."
"What?" I ask in confusion.
"Just be quiet and stay behind me," he orders me and we approach the others.
We stay at the back as three vampires appear in the field. Two men (One olive skinned with dark hair and the other a long hair blonde), and one red headed woman. They are a lot like the Cullen's except for one detail. They're eyes are blood red. I wonder what that means.
The olive-skinned man has the baseball that the Cullen's were playing with. He seems to be the leader as the Cullen's all approach grouped together and everyone looks over everyone else. I try to blend in with the Cullen's and try to control my racing heart.
Edward keeps so close to me I can feel his cold hand against mine. I can tell from the look on his face he is reading their thoughts.
The olive skinned man holds the ball up to show all of us. "I believe this belongs to you."
He throws the ball and Carlisle catches it.
"Thank you," he says to him and both smile at each other.
"I am Laurent," the olive-skinned man says before introducing his friends. "And this is Victoria... and James."
Victoria nods and James does not do anything.
"I'm Carlisle," Carlisle introduces himself but is vague on the rest of us. "This is my family."
"Hello," Laurent says to all of us.
"I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused something of a problem for us," Carlisle says and the red eyes, and the amount of dead people in towns near here tell me exactly what diet these three are on.
If these three realise I am human... I am dead.
"Our apologies," Laurent says and I am actually beginning to feel nervous at the way James seems to be scrutinizing me. He has barely took his eyes off of me. "We didn't realise this territory had been claimed."
"Yes," Carlisle begins mainly talking to Laurent. "We maintain a permanent residence nearby."
"Really?" Laurent sounds curious and so does Victoria but James continues to stare at Edward and I. "Well we won't be a problem anymore. We were just passing through."
"The humans were tracking us," Victoria informs us smiling. "But we led them East. You should be safe."
Carlisle smiles at her. "Excellent."
"So," Laurent begins chuckling. "Could you use three more players? Oh come on... just one game."
Everyone waits for Carlisle to answer.
"Sure," he says finally. "Why not? A few of us were leaving. You can take their place. We'll bat first."
He throws the ball and with a snap of her wrist.. Victoria catches it. "I'm the one with the wicked curve ball."
"Well I think we can handle that," Jasper tells her and Laurent makes a noise.
But as everyone else moves... Edward, James and I do not. I am staring at Edward when a sudden breeze blows my hair all around and Edward tenses as James catches a whiff of the air.
"You brought a snack!" He says moving towards me.
Edward pushes me back as he leans down and begins to growl at James who retaliates the same way and everyone gathers around us. The Cullen's are protecting me, with Esme holding me behind her,
"A human?" Laurent asks as the Cullen's, James and Victoria all growl.
Laurent seems more calm.
"The girl is with us," Carlisle tells him with a warning edge in his tone. "I think it best if you leave."
"I can see the game is over," Laurent says knowing that they are outnumbered and that I am well protected. "We'll go now! James!"
After another moment of Edward and James glaring at each other James growls before moving away. Victoria follows after another second. Edward is still reading James thoughts until Carlisle turns to him.
"Get Elena out of here," he says to him. "Go!"
Edward grabs my hand and we go running to the truck where he tries to help me get my seat belt on. "OKAY! I got it!"
He gets in the drivers seat and we race off.
