You Can't Always Have What You Want In Life

Chapter 7

Authors Notes.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you to all those who have commented and who are still with me. I know it is going slow and some find that frustrating but I intended for this story to be slow burn. I know some of you don't like how Maura and Jane are treating each other in my story but they are teenagers and teenagers make many mistakes especially where sex and relationships are concerned. Also, I know it was mentioned that one reader will not be continuing with my story because of how I have chosen to write them in my story. All I can say is that I don't want them to be carbon copies of the characters in the show, I want to put my own spin on things, it is AU fiction after all.

Finally, even with all the angst, and there is more to come, this is a jane and Maura love story so they will end up together but this will be an angsty story so I worn those who do not like that sort of thing to stop reading now. Thanks again and enjoy the chapter.

It was almost 6.30pm when Jane finally got home, she and Carla had spent the rest of the day watching tv and hanging out. They hadn't talked much about anything of great importance, they mostly stuck to general chit chat regarding school and the end of year dance, which was fast approaching.

Once Jane has shut the engine off, she dashed out of the car and made her way towards the front door. She bounded through it as quite as she could, eager to avoid her mothers wrath. She knew Angela wouldn't be happy about her cutting it so short. She couldn't just put her ripped jeans and baggy T on and have done with it, her mother would insist she get a shower and put on her best clothes for the occasion.

"Jane Rizzoli! You'd better get your butt in that shower young lady and get dressed. You are going to make us late!" Jane rolled her eyes at her mothers overreaction, something Angela was prone to doing regularly. "I am going now Ma, relax!" Jane said as she made her way upstairs. "Don't take that tone with me young lady, I told you to be back for six! Both your brothers made it back on time." Angela shouted after her daughter.

Jane ignored her mothers last outburst and headed towards the bathroom. She quickly stripped off and stepped into the shower. She relaxed as soon as the hot water hit her, all the tension in her body seemed to disappear, she let her shoulders fall, enjoying the feeling of the water hitting her body.

Once out of the shower, Jane quickly dried her hair and got dressed. She decided to wear the black Versace jeans Maura had got her for her last birthday and a white button down shirt that fit her in all the right places. she gave herself the once over in the mirror. She looked feminine without looking too feminine she thought to herself.

Jane turned and headed downstairs. She was looking forward to seeing Maura, despite how they had left things, Jane really was going to make more of an effort.

Pulling up outside the Isles residence, frank senior turned the engine off. He and Angela got out first, followed by the Rizzoli kids. Jane took in a shaky breath before following her family to the front door. A few seconds after knocking, the door opened and they were greeted by the maid. Jane always hated the fact that Maura and her family had hired help.

"Good evening Mr and Mrs Rizzoli" the maid spoke softly as she ushered them inside. She took their coats before speaking again "Mr and Mrs Isles are waiting for you in the lounge. Please you in"

Jane followed her parents and her brothers into the lounge, there, they were greeted by both Constance and Jonathan Isles, both smiling warmly at her parents.

"Angela, Frank, it is so good to see you" Constance said, kissing them both on the cheek. Frank shook hands with Jonathan who also turned towards Tommy and Frankie "So good to see you boys, why don't you two go play pool in my games room before dinner" Both Frankie and Tommy excitedly ran off towards the games room before Angela had chance to scold them for forgetting their manners.

"Those boys will be the death of me one day, no matters at all…I blame you Frank." Angela said as she turned to face her husband. Jonathan laughed "They are just excited kids Angela." Jonathan turned to Jane "hello Jane, nice to see you too, not seen you around much lately."

Jane returned his smile "I've been really busy lately with school and stuff. He nodded in understanding. Constance spoke up "Maura is just upstairs getting ready, why don't you go up to her Jane, you two can catch up before dinner." Jane smiled at Constance but inside, she was panicking, she wanted to see Maura but she was afraid of what Maura would say to her. "Sure thing." Jane said before turning and heading out the door while her parents joined Constance and Jonathan on the sofa. She headed towards the stairs, going as slow as she could in order to gather her thoughts. She wasn't even sure of what she wanted to say to Maura, all she knew was that she wanted her friend back.

Jane gentle tapped on Maura's door and waited. "Come in." she heard Maura say. Jane took a deep breath before slowly entering Maura's bedroom. Maura was sat on her bed, applying lipstick, she didn't turn around to see who had entered, probably thought I was her maid or something Jane thought as she rolled her eyes. Finally, she spoke up "You didn't have to get all dolled up for me Maura."

Maura spun around and looked at Jane "Jane, you scared me, what are you doing up here? You haven't spoken to me in 3 weeks."

Jane moved closer to Maura and sat on the bed next to her. "I've missed you Maura, I miss my best friend." Jane placed her hand on Maura's. Maura melted into Jane's touch "I've missed you too Jane, I want to apologise for my behaviour Jane, I have no right to tell you who you can and cannot date." Maura smiled weakly at Jane.

Jane returned the smile but inside she was crushed. She had hoped Maura would finally confess her feelings and agree to date Jane openly, instead she had just clarified Jane's fears…she wasn't in love with Jane, it was just sex to Maura. Jane loved Maura so much she would do anything for her including standing by her as her best friend while she dated someone else. It would kill Jane but she needed Maura in her life, she meant too much to her.

"Thanks for apologising Maura but you really didn't need to, we both got carried away, I just want my best friend back." Maura smiled brightly at Jane, brining her in for a hug. Jane returned the hug, reluctant to let go.

Finally, Jane pulled away and spoke "So what have you been doing these past three weeks Maura?"

Maura too a moment before answering, in reality the past three weeks had been pretty bad, she had been forced by her mother to spend all her free time with Michael, he mother said it was a good idea to get to know the man you were going to marry so that there were no surprises when they did finally tie the knot. He had tried to convince Maura to have sex multiple times but she had only gone as far as giving him a hand job, she hated it, it felt so different from when she had been with Jane. Maura was dying inside, wanting to just tell Jane how she loved her, how she had always loved her but remembering her mothers words, she pushed her feeling down once again "Nothing much Jane, I've been spending a lot of time with Michael, he has given me a promise ring, its that sweet." she showed her finger to Jane who grasped it between her own fingers. "Its lovely Maura, I'm glad Michael makes you happy, you deserve it."

Eager to change the subject, Maura spoke "So what have you been up to Jane, did you go on that date with Carla?" Jane cleared her throat, wanting to avoid the subject of Carla but she didn't want to lie to Maura. "Yeah we did, we are actually dating now, have been for 3 weeks."

Both Maura and Jane smiled despite the fact that they both wanted to die inside…
