A/N: Uploaded a full 7 chapters as these are quite similar but chapter 8 onwards is where I've made way bigger changes! Will post updates every day this week and then every weekend following :)
Fiona's POV
Today had been a great day really. In Potions, I was lucky to have Poppy to sit next to and we got on really well. We talked about random things and just generally had a laugh. She also helped me loads and for once my potion was deemed to be of a high standard. I see a good year for me in potions. Not only this but Herbology was great! As much as I love Lily it does sometimes get tedious when she keeps going on about how annoying the Marauders are. I mean, don't get me wrong, I see where she's coming from sometimes but they're just having a laugh. Sometimes I often wonder how Lily and I ever became friends, but oh well.
But honestly, what was Sprout thinking, pairing me and Sirius up?! He's a bad influence on me, in fact they all are, especially James and Sirius though. I thought the water fight would be a great opportunity to see what kind of person Poppy would be (yeah, my logic seems messed up I know) and it worked great. It looks like I'm not the only one who can be influenced by the Marauders. I had a feeling when we first met that she might potentially be too quiet and shy, but it seems I had it wrong. True, it looks like she's keen on work and school, but I think she wants to have fun too. My cousin and his friends are great really and yeah, they can be annoying sometimes, but their hearts are totally in the right place.
Anyway, so here we were, walking up to the common room. Lily was walking ahead with Alice, seeing as I'm not her favourite person right now; she always goes a little off when I get into troubles but then again, she's someone who complies exactly with the rules. She'll probably talk to me tonight about 'corrupting' Poppy or something like that. I turned to Poppy now, seeing her eyes a bright silver in colour and looked at her curiously, wondering what it reflected. She must have felt me looking as she glanced at me and I saw her eyes instantly change back to gold.
"Sorry did I distract you?" I asked her, grinning slightly.
"Oh no, not at all" she replied quickly, a small smile on her face but I could see she looked a little nervous. By this time, Lily and Alice had sped off into the distance and it was just Poppy and I in the corridors and it was quiet. As in, too quiet. Something was wrong. I looked around for something unusual but couldn't find anything out of place, now glancing around for Peeves.
"You okay?" I heard Poppy ask me, looking quizzically at me, her eyes a bluey green in colour now which was actually very pretty.
"It's too quiet around here" I replied, casting an eye around, feeling on edge.
"Worried by that fact, are we?" a deep, husky voice to the right of me whispered, making me scream in shock and get my wand out, only to find four laughing boys in front of me. James, Sirius, Remus and Peter had apparently found my scream hilarious.
"That wasn't funny! You could have given me a heart attack!" I exclaimed, whacking the nearest person to me, which happened to be James.
"Ow! It wasn't that scary! Poppy didn't scream!" he responded, rubbing his arm where I had whacked him. I turned to face Poppy who had a faint smile on her face.
"Yeah, that's a point. Why didn't you scream?" I asked her, folding my arms. She shrugged,
"I knew they were there" she told me simply.
"And how did you know that?" Sirius asked, his voice as cocky as ever. I turned to face him, seeing him raise an eyebrow and look at her curiously. Whether or not Poppy knew it, she had most definitely captured one of the Marauders eye. I had noticed it when they first met and yesterday. But then again, you could never trust Sirius's motives.
"Oh, I could hear you" she said, a light tinge of colour to her face and the golden colour of her eyes now bright. I glanced at Sirius who smiled at her, a rare proper smile of his, not the cocky grin and I saw her blush, averting her eyes. So obviously he had some sort of effect on her. Jeez, first Masters and now seemingly Sirius! Whoever next?! I think we would need to have a chat later, perhaps not in front of Lily. We started to move then, Poppy walking a little ahead with James and Peter and I could hear James chatting easily to her.
"What was all that about?" I asked Sirius, unable to keep from grinning. Both him and Remus turned to look at me, Remus with a grin and Sirius with a quizzical look.
"All what? Us scaring you? Well that was just part of-" he started but I shook my head and cut him off.
"No, I mean you and Poppy" I said, hearing Remus chuckle.
"Now I'm really confused" he replied, although I felt that he wasn't being totally honest.
"Doesn't take much Pad" Remus countered with a grin.
"Oi, I resent that comment. I'm not totally stupid" Sirius replied, feigning a look of offence. I knew him too well to know that he really didn't resent that comment.
"Don't go off track!" I exclaimed, drawing attention back to the conversation in hand. Honestly, boys; they get so side-tracked sometimes.
"What track?!" Sirius in turn exclaimed, and now Remus was properly laughing.
"You know what I'm talking about" I told him firmly and from the look that crossed his face when I said that, I knew he knew exactly what I was talking about.
"Yeah Pad, I'm curious to know about this as well. I think somebody's got their eye on the new girl" Remus told him, and I saw Sirius shake his head, but I could see the small smile. Unfortunately, we had approached the common room and before we went in, I turned to Sirius.
"This conversation isn't over" I warned him, thinking I could have some fun watching him squirm.
"I wasn't aware it had begun" he replied with a grin, sauntering into the common room and turning every single girls head in the process. I shook my head as I watched it, hearing Remus move next to me.
"Oh, it's there alright. I'll get him to tell me about it" he said in a low voice, making my heart flutter a little. Wait, what?! My heart fluttering?! This was just Remus talking to me! I shook my head a little to clear it before I looked up, seeing him grin at me broadly.
"This is going to be fun" I told him before walking into the common room, hearing Remus behind me.
Poppy's POV
I walked with James up to the common room which was nice to be able to talk to him some more. I'd had fun in herbology today, even if we were supposed to be doing some work. Fiona was a great person and she was really easy to get on with, always seemingly up for a laugh. I could hear her talking to Sirius and Remus quietly behind us but didn't pay them any attention.
"Can't believe I have my detention tonight, which SOME PEOPLE should have also got" he said, grinning broadly and looking at me. I couldn't help but smile,
"I'm sorry you got caught" I found myself saying, hearing him laugh at my response. I was surprised at myself, seemingly more relaxed than I had thought to be able to say this to them. As we walked into the common room, I looked around for Lily or Alice but couldn't see either of them.
"Come sit with us" James said and I turned to see him smiling at me, motioning me over to the fireplace where the guys were sat yesterday. Seeing as I couldn't see the other two, I went with him, seeing his smile widen as I did so but this faltered when I produced my herbology book.
"Awww Poppy do you have to do that now?" he asked, and I knew he was teasing me so just nodded, opening it to the pages which we had meant to read in class.
"I should, seeing as somebody disrupted my learning" I told him, seeing his eyes light up at my comment before he laughed, the other three starting to make their way over to us. They all smiled at us as they came over, Fiona launching herself into an armchair quickly before she turned to Remus and Sirius, looking at them pointedly before she looked at me. I looked at her warily and she gave me a guilty smile before she started talking to James and I zoned out, burying myself in my herbology book in an attempt to catch up.
"Poppy!" I heard Fiona call my name and blinked, looking up to see everybody looking at me and I blushed, seeing Fiona laugh. "Now you're with us! We're going down to dinner" she told me, and I nodded, trying to avoid looking at anybody; they probably thought I was a right geek. I shut my book and went to get up when I saw a hand stretch out to me and looked up to see Sirius giving me a smile. I hesitated before taking his hand, allowing him to help me up.
"Are you two coming or what?" I jumped as I heard Fiona talking to us and quickly withdrew my hand from Sirius, heading over to her quickly, wondering why Sirius kept offering me his help.
Thankfully, Fiona didn't say anything as we made our way down to dinner and we had just walked through the door when I heard somebody call my name. I looked around, surprised when I saw Luke waving me over.
"You don't mind if I go eat with Luke, do you?" I asked her and she shook her head quickly, the rest of the guys stopping and looking at us curiously.
"Err, it's De Piesto. No way do I mind! Go!" she told me, making me shake my head as I gave the rest of them a smile as I made my way over to him.
"Hiya" I said happily as I took a seat opposite him, surprised to see him not sat with his friends.
"Hi Pop. How are you doing?" he asked, gesturing for me to help myself to some food which I did happily as he started to eat.
"Yeah not bad. I have to say though, I do feel better now I know you're here" I admitted, seeing him give me a small smile as I poured myself an orange juice before tucking in.
"Well, it doesn't seem too bad, you already seem to have made friends" he commented, nodding his head towards the Gryffindor table.
"I hope so" I replied with a shrug and he smiled at me in a reassuring way.
"You have, trust me. I've also heard your name floating around my common room" he told me, arching an eyebrow and I looked at him confused. "Masters" he elaborated, making me blush and avert my eyes. "What's the deal?" he asked straight away.
"We just sit next to each other in class that's all. I've barely spoken to him" I told him, trying to not scan for him at the table I was currently sat at.
"Well he certainly seems interested" he told me, and I glanced up to see him looking at me with curiosity.
"Luke I've barely started here I've got no interest in anything like that" I replied, focusing instead on my food, really hoping he was going to drop it. I could really do without one of these lectures.
The rest of dinner with Luke was good; we managed to have a catch up until his friends arrived. At this point I had managed to slip away, despite his protestations that I could stay and was making my way back to where I thought the common room was when I stopped, realising that I was probably lost. As I glanced around, I realised I didn't actually recognise anything around me and tried not to panic; I would just retrace my footsteps until I found my mistake.
"Hi there, are you okay?" I had just gone around a corner and found myself almost bumping into a boy as I looked around me and not in front of me.
"Oh sorry" I said quickly, feeling embarrassed. He gave me a smile and quickly shook his head.
"No problem. Hey, you're the new girl, right?" he asked, making me blush as I begrudgingly nodded. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Caleb" he introduced, smile widening.
"You too, I'm Poppy" I replied, giving him a small smile back.
"So Poppy, can I help you?" he asked, his tone encouraging. I shuffled a little nervously, not really wanting to admit I was lost. "Lost?" he guessed and I reluctantly nodded. "Well, given that the Gryffindors tend to come from the seventh floor we're currently on the fifth so you're going to need to go up another couple of staircases if that helps?" he questioned and I nodded, thinking I could figure it out from there.
"Thanks" I said, feeling a little relieved and his smile just widened.
"Oh, that's no problem. I hope I see you around more often Poppy" he told me, making me blush before I started moving away, glancing behind me at the end to see he had been watching me go.
"Poppy! Over here!" Fiona called me as soon as I stepped foot into the common room, and I looked to my right to see her sat by the fireplace. I started making my way over, figuring she must be with the girls until I was almost there and saw that she was, in fact, sat with the Marauders. She gestured me to sit in the armchair which I did, conscious that everybody was watching me. "How was dinner?" she asked me casually and I tried not to think about the fact that the guys were all looking at me curiously.
"Good, nice to see him" I told her, trying to just focus on her.
"So, how do you know him?" James asked, drawing my attention to him and I saw him looking at me with a smile.
"Family friends" I replied simply, and he looked most intrigued by this.
"I thought you went to Beauxbatons though?" he questioned, and I nodded, unused to the attention.
"Yes, but my dad was English, so we spent summers here which is how I know Luke" I explained, and he nodded, smiling. I glanced to the others, seeing they had all been listening in apparent interest.
"Did Luke walk you back up here?" Fiona asked and now I blushed, shaking my head.
"Oh no. I came up myself" I told her, and she raised her eyebrows.
"You managed to find your way back here on your second day?" she asked, and I felt more colour flooding my cheeks.
"I got a little lost, but somebody helped me" I replied, and she grinned.
"Who was it?" she asked, evidently intrigued.
"Um, he said his name was Caleb" I said, thinking that was the name he had given me. I watched as her expression changed into a frown.
"Simons?" she asked, and I shrugged.
"He didn't say his last name" I told her, and I saw her look at the guys. Things got weird as they all frowned, looking at each other as though they were silently communicating about what I did not know. There was a weird silence in which I shuffled nervously in my seat, thinking it might be best if I left. "I'm going to go get a shower" I said, breaking the silence and seeing them all jump. Before they could say anything, I got up, grabbing my bag which I'd left here earlier and scarpering up the stairs, wondering what all that was about.
Fiona's POV
Shit, Caleb bloody Simons. I mean, it wasn't exactly a common name so I could only assume it was him. I couldn't help but look at the boys when Poppy told us, thinking this was not a good situation to be in. Eurgh. He was such a dick; how he got to be in Hufflepuff is beyond me. The guy was a 'date, dump, make life hell' kind of guy and none of us would want Poppy to be involved with that. As I looked around at them, trying to think about wat the most ideal thing to do would be, she was up and out like a flash, startling me and the others, I think.
"Shit, that wasn't so good" I breathed when she left, slumping down in my seat. I noticed Sirius watching her go and thought how unusual this was for him.
"Should we tell her?" James brought me out of my thoughts, and I looked at him to see he was frowning at me.
"I don't know. Maybe" I said with a shrug, not really wanting our new friend to be mixed up with Simons.
"He's such a slime ball" I heard Sirius mutter, his attention only now coming back to us.
"That the err, only reason you don't want Poppy speaking to him?" Remus teased him and I couldn't help but laugh as Sirius rolled his eyes but didn't respond.
"Do you like her Pad?" James asked him now, huge grin on his face.
"Oh, shut up" was his lazy reply, shaking his head. "Barely know her" he continued as though he found the whole thing amusing. "Right come on Prongs. We don't wanna be late for our detention with Sprout" he said, getting up and looking expectantly at James. I heard him sigh before he got up and gave me a playful shove on the way.
"See you guys later" he called before the two of them made their way out.
"He likes her, right?" I asked Peter and Remus as soon as they disappeared through the portrait and I saw Peter shrug, but Remus grinned at me knowingly.
"I guess we'll have to wait and see" was all he said, making me feel like he was holding something back from me.
