Chapter 7
A few minutes earlier
Judy's POV
"I hear four of them are you going to be able handle that many by yourself?" She asked she knew Anthony could protect himself but she doubted that he could take on four of these mammals by himself in a close up fight.
"I'm going to have too. With you hurt there's no other choice." Anthony said as he pushed away from the wall and ran towards hallway yelling. "Riot Anriesen!" And she saw the fox dart out from under the coffee table following Anthony as he disappeared down the dark hallway.
She couldn't help but give a small growl of frustration. Anthony had said it himself he was better equipped for a ranged fight while she was the better choice for a close quarters fight. So having them switch rolls and deal with a situation that opposes their individual skill sets was beyond reckless. She tried to stand and go after Anthony to stop him but a sharp stabbing pain flared in her chest forcing her down to one knee grimacing in pain. She recognized the signs small movements hurt and even breathing hurt she knew she had at least one broken rib but she could push through it like she did back in the ZPD Academy She had too.
That's when the logical part of her brain spoke up. 'But that's why Anthony made the choice that he did. We might be the better choice for close up fights but in a narrow hallway, no cover, and broken ribs? We'd most likely survive but that'd be it for us. We'd be completely knocked out of this fight and Anthony would be on his own until Mike and his deputies arrive.'
'But it's four on one! And these aren't the bullies at his school their trained professionals!' She thought back trying to convince herself why she had to go after Anthony to stop him but the pain in her chest was quickly draining her resolve. 'Besides Anthony's shotgun would be of better use guarding the window then my pistol and with no cover his shotgun would be more of a disadvantage then an advantage in close quarters.'
'Yes and do you honestly believe that Anthony hasn't already thought of that? His ability to think of a plan in the heat of the moment is nearly as good if not just as good as ours.'Her brain argued back. 'We told Anthony earlier that we trust him so we should trust him now. Let him concentrate on the four in the back we need to concentrate on guarding the window Because now that they've got people inside they're going to make another push.'
And as if in response to her thoughts she heard the distinct click of a walkie talkie then the second male voice from earlier speak up from the other side of the storm shutter by the dinner table. "The plan worked the kid's heading your way Jackson take him out. Squad seven, Squad five move in on the rabbit now! Everyone else stand by watch the road this much gun fire has more then likely been noticed by now and be ready to take the place of anyone that this rodent takes down."
It was obvious whoever the human behind the storm shutter was, he was in charge now. She straightened up just enough to see out the window and saw at least half a dozen humans running towards her. She quickly stood up and raised 9mm Black Rabbit she knew she could shoot these humans from this distance easily. But the only way to guaranty a kill shot was to hit them in the head or neck and they weren't close enough yet that she felt that she was guaranteed a kill shot and she didn't have ammo to spare. So instead she took aim at one of the human's hips (Pop,Pop,Pop) all three rounds hit high on the human's thigh a little to the right of his groin and the figure hit the ground screaming with enough momentum he flipped head over tail. She switched her aim to the next human firing three more shots and once again all three shots hit only this time they hit this human on the left side of his chest knocking him off his feet so that he landed hard on his back.
She was about to take aim at the next human in line but her ears picked the sound of one human making his way around the corner of the house to her right so it was either their new leader or the human that Anthony had shot at before he went to fight the four other humans in the back. She quickly rushed to the the far left side of the couch right next to the section of wall where Anthony had been taking cover so that she had a clear view at the corner of the house and as she expected she saw another human who had obviously been hoping to sneak into her blind spot.
She locked eyes with the human for only a second. But in that second she could see the fear that filled his light brown eyes as he tried to get his weapon up but she already had her pawgun raised so she simply squeezed the trigger firing two shots. She could clearly see the two red holes appeared in the human's face. One between his eyes and the other down and over an inch just below his left eye. The human staid standing for a fraction of a second then the light in his eyes flickered and went out like a candle in the wind before he crumbled to the ground.
Before she had a chance to replay the image of the human's death in her mind the boom of a shotgun come from the back of the house caught her attention and she heard Anthony yell. "Riot Umbringen!" She knew that, that could only mean that Anthony had started his fight against the four in the back. But as worried as she was she knew she had to concentrate on her own fight so she quickly turned her attention back out the window. She immediately focused on the closes two humans she fired her last three shots and knew at least one bullet had hit since she clearly saw the light catch the mist of blood spray into the air as one of the humans fell although she wasn't sure were the bullet hit. She used her thumb to eject the empty clip then she grabbed a fresh one from her utility belt and slammed it into place.
But the few seconds it took her to do that was all the time the second human needed. The human jumped through what little remained of the front door. This human had impressive reflexes as he managed to spin towards her and raise his rifle so fast she didn't have time to raise her pistol. She instead acted on instinct and jumped into the air as the human pulled the trigger. She landed on top of the back of the couch just as bullets hit where she had been a split second before. The landing itself had sent a fresh but bearable wave of pain through her chest, she staid on the back of the couch just long enough to she launch herself straight at the human's chest. As she moved through the air she brought her knees up to her chest and timed it so that just before she hit the human she kicked out her legs as hard as she could right into the humans chest. The force of her kick caused the human to slam into the wall behind him and forced her backwards back onto the couch.
She had known that both her kick and landing back onto the couch would send flares of pain through her chest but the pain was far worse then she had expected. She let out a small gasp of pain and half curled in on herself with her left arm hugging her chest while her right arm kept a firm grip on her pistol. Trixy came out from under the coffee table and came right up to her sniffing obviously trying to see if she was alright. But she ignored the fox and instead she lifted her head looking over towards the human she kicked and vaguely raised her pistol as she did. She saw the human was slumped against the base of the wall obviously unconscious.
With the immediate threat gone she dropped her head and paw back against the couch. She wanted nothing more then to lay there and let the pain in her chest fade but she could hear more humans rushing towards the house. So instead she rolled over landing feet first on the floor still hugging her chest with her left arm as she started walking around the coffee table with Trixy sticking close to her side. She was heading towards the section of the kitchen counter next too the dinner table to take cover knowing full well she couldn't hold the window anymore. She had only been able to make it to the back corner of the coffee table before two more humans appeared in the window rifles pointed down towards the couch cushions. And at the same time there was a scarlet blur as Trixy launched herself towards the new arrivals quickly biting down on the arm of the human on the right.
For a moment she couldn't understand what the vixen could be thinking charging in like that against the two heavily armed humans it was suicidal. But then she remembered that while Trixy was a fox she wasn't like the foxes of her world, Trixy was a wild animal and wasn't intelligent enough to understand that she didn't stand a chance all the vixen knew was that unknown humans were invading her home so the vixen did what her instincts told her to do and attacked.
In the second it took for her to realized that she also realized with a pang of guilt that with the vixen acting as a distraction it gave her the chance she needed to get to cover. She quickly turned away from the small struggle behind her rushing towards the counter as she reached the table she gave the table leg a solid kick breaking the leg causing the table to crash to the floor knocking over all the chairs. She was nearly crushed by the table as it fell and was sure that she had bruised her foot but she ignored it and got behind the table and pushed her shoulder against it pushing the table to an angle facing out wards to the rest of the main room which didn't help her chest but she needed the little bit of extra cover. And no sooner had she gotten the table into place she heard a loud yelp and looked up just in time to see Trixy fly through the air before the kitchen counter blocked her view but from the sounds that followed she could all to easily imagination the vixen slamming into the storm shutter in the kitchen before falling into the stainless steel sink.
"It bit me! That fucking mutt bit me!" A voice yelled from the front window.
Her head snapped around at the sound. Up until now she had managed to keep a calm and level headed demeanor mostly thanks to her ZPD training but both seeing Trixy get thrown through the air and the speicist slur from the male who had done it was enough to to punch a hole in her self control. "How dare you!" She screamed at them raising her pistol firing and several rounds at the offending human. Unfortunately the second human was paying more attention and pushed the first one out of the way before ducking under the window seal for cover.
She moved forward a little out from behind the table and knelt behind the corner of the counter her pistol aimed towards the window ready for the next human to appear there. She tensed as she heard three more pairs of feet running towards the house.
But the humans didn't appear and take up a position at the window like she expected instead they charged straight into the house through the now door less doorway. Because of this unexpected and what she thought as a reckless move the first human made it through the doorway and dove into opening to the kitchen taking cover behind the opposite end of the counter before she could react. But the other two weren't so lucky as she swung her weapon around towards them firing four rounds at them; and felt another pang of guilt as all four bullets missed hitting the wall just ahead of the leading human causing a few more of Anthony's family photo's to explode. Both of the humans halted in their tracks then scrambled back tripping over themselves as they took cover behind the end of the couch.
She might have managed to fired a few more rounds at them but the human who took cover behind the counter (who she noticed unlike the others didn't have a cloth mask hiding his face and had silvery-white mustache and goatee like a member of a motorcycle gang) fired at her forcing her to duck back behind the corner of the counter as the burst of bullets flew past putting holes into the table. And just as the human with the goatee ducked back behind his section of counter obviously expecting her to retaliate one of the two humans behind the couch start pushing it away from the wall so that the couch came out at an angle facing her. While the second popped up over the arm of the couch firing in her direction in quick three round bursts. But it was obvious that this human didn't know exactly where she was as a dozen new holes appeared at random in the the table a foot or two to her right so while she had flinched at first she didn't feel that she had to duck out of the way.
She returned fire hoping to take advantage of the fact that the human didn't know where she was but her first shot missed and the human duck back behind the couch before her other shot found it's mark. And at almost the exact moment one of the first two humans outside the window popped back up firing. And this time she was forced back as the bullets hit the corner of the counter and the floor just barley missing her. She responded by firing blindly around the corner as she made a quick dash behind the table the thin hardwood didn't provide much protection but it did give her more room to dodge and maneuver so she'd be harder to pin down. Once she was behind the table she quickly knelt down ejecting the clip for her pistol to check her ammo and felt her heart sink the clip was empty leaving just the one round in the chamber. Add that to the two spare clips she still had she only had twenty-five bullets left and with how quickly she was burning through her ammo she would run out very soon.
Trying hard not to think about what would happen when she ran out of bullets she dropped the empty clip replacing it with a new one. Then she peeked out around the edge of the table keeping as low as she could and she notice that the human crouched behind the arm of the couch had made the mistake of leaving his knee sticking out from behind the couch. So she quickly raised her pistol and fired two quick shots, the human fell sideways screaming as he clutched at his knee but before she could see if this gave her an opportunity to kill him more bullets started to rip though the table. The first round of bullets had missed her but they were so close she could feel a sharp stinging pain from the left side of her face and her left arm as pieces of wood flew from the table and pelted her, and she could feel the floor boards vibrate as the bullets buried themselves into the floor.
She knew that she had to get out of here if she didn't change her position it was only a matter of time before one of those bullets went through the right section of table. But most of the bullets were tearing through the section of table right behind her preventing her from running back to the other side of the table, and if she left her cover she'd have no where to go but towards the recliner in the corner and she'd be even more trapped there then she was here. She started looking around desperately trying to find another alternative then as she looked up she realized that there weren't any bullets punching through the portion of table directly above her. It would be risky and the landing would hurt but if she jumped she could get out of this position easily.
It was the best idea she had so she coiled the muscles in her legs then launched herself up at a slight angle so when she'd landed she would be behind the end of the table closest to the counter. And as she cleared the top of the table it gave her the opportunity to get a clear view of the room and see the exact locations of all of her attackers and the expressions of shock and disbelief in their eyes. The human with the goatee was still knelt behind the end of the counter and there were now four humans behind the couch three behind the back of the couch and one crouched behind the arm of the couch and from the streak of blood she could only assume that the human she shot in the knee had been dragged out of the house.
She quickly fired several burst towards the humans behind the couch then as she felt herself start to fall she switched targets and fired a burst towards the human with the goatee. Then her view of the room was cut off by the table and she stumbled as she landed and another wave of pain flared in her chest (although it was getting a little easier to ignore) then she spun on the balls of her feet and did a short sprint right back to the spot that she had jumped from. Just as she suspected bullets started ripping through the end of the table closest to the counter the exact spot that conventional wisdom would say she was at since that was where she had jumped too.
She allowed herself a small moment of pride and self satisfaction at tricking her attackers to shoot at the wrong spot. Then she took aim at one of the three humans standing behind the back of the couch through a hole the roughly the size of an apple that had been put in the table. She fired her last two shots the shots hit the human just below his collarbone forcing the him back and causing him to bounce against the wall behind him before dropping out of site. But at the same time she heard the musical clinking sound of breaking ceramic so she knew she must have hit the armor plate even if it was only the edge. Cursing her bad luck She quickly moved to the middle of the table so she could avoid getting pinned down again.
As she loaded her last clip into her pistol she heard the voice of their leader again only this time it was louder and came from the direction of the couch. "Fuck this shit reload and light up the whole fucking table!"
She clearly heard the metallic scraps and clicks as multiple rifle magazines were switched out then the shuffle of moving cloth. She knew what was coming so as the first few bullets tore through the table she threw herself down on to the ground so that she was laying flat on her stomach and brought up her paws to protect the back of her head and neck. She felt more quick stings of pain as she was once again showered by wood splinters as more bullets then she could keep count of chewed their way through the table.
The barrage of bullets continued uninterrupted for more then a minute then it was abruptly cut off by the hollow clicking sound of empty weapons which was quickly followed by the sounds of them once again reloading. "Zanglie! Make sure we killed that thing!" Their leader yelled.
Hearing footsteps from behind the counter inside of the kitchen coming towards her she risked raising her head to look up at the counter. She immediately saw the face of the human with a goatee appeared as he walked close enough to see over the counter and down behind the table right at her. She didn't hesitate in her response she rolled over on to her back and held her pistol over her head pointing upwards and put a round into the human's head before he could do more then look shocked.
As the human with the goatee fell out of sight behind the counter she heard a number of curses from the other humans and one who's voice she hadn't heard yet yelled. "GOD DAMN IT! What the hell is it going to take to kill this thing!?"
After that the four humans behind the couch started arguing over how they were going to attack her next. She listened to them closely as she stood back up hoping to be able to come up with a counter attack for any plan they made as they came up with it. All the while keeping in mind the grim fact that she had only eleven shots left both for the four humans behind the couch and the who knows how many other humans outside that were still in fighting shape. If Anthony didn't finish his fight in the next couple of minutes and come back up front with the few spare clips she wasn't able to fit on her utility belt all she'd be able to do was throw her pistol at these mammals. And unless she wanted to fight each and everyone of them paw to paw she'd have to get another weapon and her best bet would be to see if the goatee human had, had a side arm on him when she killed him. But that also meant she had to figure out how to get over the counter and to the goatee human's body and get a weapon without the other humans noticing or at least before they could shoot her like a fish in a barrel, and that was assuming that any weapon the dead human had was something she could even use.
Before she could give it anymore thought she heard Anthony's voice come from the back of the house even through the four humans arguing. "Judy! Run!" With all the other noise his voice was faint but she could clearly hear the strain in his voice which also sounded oddly distorted.
She concentrated her hearing towards the back of the house hoping to catch more hoping that what she heard didn't mean what she thought it did. Then she heard a laugh that sent a chill up her spine quickly followed by a voice that definitely didn't belong to Anthony. The new voice was still at a volume that only her sensitive ears could hear but this voice was louder and clearer then Anthony's. "Oh it's far too late for the rabbit to do that. So just be a good little boy and die." This bone chilling statement launched her heart up into her throat and she readied herself to run down the hallway to help Anthony regardless of the risk. But then her heart plummeted down through the floorboards as she heard the sound of a shotgun blast followed only a second later by the soft thump of a body falling to the ground. The combination of these sounds left her with little doubt, Anthony was dead and she was alone.
Her eyes stung as they filled with tears and her throat constricted and she felt like someone had punched her in the gut even as she felt the beginning of a fresh panic attack start to build up inside of her. Even with their many arguments or her mistrust and even hatred at him hunting she really had grown to care for and trust Anthony in the last two weeks. She knew without a doubt that Anthony was the main if not the only reason that her being separated from her friends and family hasn't killed her. He had more or less became her life line in the last few weeks and now he was gone. She was struggling to fight back the sudden panic filling her, she knew with Anthony dead her only hope at surviving was to hold out until Mike and his deputies arrived and if she broke down now she'd have no chance. But it was a losing battle the building panic attack was quickly over whelming her. First she had lost literally everything and now these humans had taken the one mammal helping her to hold herself together.
At that thought something snapped inside her, only the sensation came from a different place inside her than where the panic was building in. And then the panic was quickly receding it was still there but it had backed into some corner in her chest like it was waiting for it's turn as she was filled with a completely different emotion.
She was angry, angrier then she had ever been in her whole life. She was so angry she couldn't even begin to describe the feeling. And these humans... no these monsters where the sole focus of all the rage inside of her. In an instant they were at the center of everything bad that had happened to her since she was pulled through the crack. Hell for all she knew they had been the ones who created that crack in the first place. They had been the ones that ripped her from her home, her life, her family. They were the reason she lost everything. It had only been a measure of extremely good luck that Anthony had been there to protect her and now They had taken him too. She knew that she had killed at least four of them and had injured even more then that but it had been because she had too not because she wanted to but because it was the only way to protect herself, Anthony, and his siblings. But now she was more determined to stop these monsters no matter what, even if it meant killing them all. The thought of going after these mammals wasn't just something for her to grasp at to give her something to focus on anymore like it had been the last three day, now she saw it as being personal.
She made a snap decision and jumped towards the count but this time she didn't use all of her strength instead she used just enough strength so that she just barely cleared the top of the counter. She did this since she hoped that the lower she was the less likely that one of the humans would notice her movement. When she landed on the floor behind the counter a piece of glass dug into her paw and she had to suppress a hiss of pain while listening for any reaction from the humans. But the humans only continued to argue over how to kill her so she quickly pulled the piece of glass out of her paw then walked forward and started to search the body of the goateed human.
She didn't even bother with goatee's assault rifle but went immediately to his belt for a side arm, but the only other weapon the human had was a sawed off double-barrel shotgun. Being a farm girl she was no stranger to shotguns but there was no way she could use this one not without breaking a few bones and being launched across the room from the kickback.
She fought back the urge to curse and quickly reassessed her situation. She only had eleven shots left but it had to have been more then five minutes since Mike had texted Anthony for them to start their distraction so he and his deputies should be arriving any second now. But even when they arrived there was no guaranty that they would be able to fight through the attacking humans before she was killed since their new leader would be quick to react to the sudden arrival of Mike and his deputies. But if she managed to take advantage of her new vantage point she might just be able to kill their leader, but then what?
She couldn't go back behind the table, because while it had kept her alive up to this point it had been torn to shreds by all the gun fire and was little more then a death trap now. And she couldn't stay here in the kitchen because while the outer edge of the counter was made of Sheetrock and would give her more then enough protection, it also made sure that she couldn't attack the humans from anywhere except from the opening in the counter leading into the kitchen. And it blocked too much of the room from her view making it far too easy for the humans to flank her. She briefly considered hiding in one of the ground level cabinets she wasn't entirely sure that the humans would actually think to look in the cabinets. But she dismissed the idea as quickly as it popped in her head it was too big of a risk that they'd look in the cabinets for her or simply shoot into the cabinets on the off chance that she had hid in there. She could try to run to the back of the house for a better position but she couldn't bring herself to really consider the idea since she knew she'd see Anthony's body and she knew she wouldn't be able to handle that emotionally.
Finally she decided that no matter what she did or where she went weather she lived or died was now entirely up to when Mike and his deputies arrived. But she couldn't decide if she should try to stay in the house until Mike and his deputies managed to clear out the remaining attackers. Or if her best bet was to abandon the house completely and join up with Mike and his deputies when they arrived. The big question was would she have enough ammo to both defend herself till they arrived and to defend herself as she crossed the front yard to get to them or did she only have enough to defend herself here in the house and nothing more.
No matter how she spun the idea around in her head she knew the odds weren't in favor of her being able to do the former, more then likely she would be force to spirit across the front yard with an empty weapon. Then like a switch was flipped somewhere in her head the memory of laying on the ground after being shot and watching Anthony attack and disarmed the human who had shot her played in her head. She particularly remembered that from her point of view on the floor she had seen the human's weapon skid to a stop between the coffee table and what was left of the entertainment center after Anthony had knocked it out of the attacking human's grip.
She quickly went over to the gap in the counter and carefully peeked around the corner and saw that her new vantage point wasn't what she thought it was. She had a completely unobstructed view of the human crouched behind the arm of the couch but as for the four hiding behind the couch she only had a clear line of sight on the the one closes to her the other were mostly if not completely blocked by the couch. Which meant that she didn't have a direct line of sight on their leader who from the sound of his voice was the third human from her. And she'd have to stand out in the open or go into the hallway and use the wall for cover in order to get a shot on him or the other two.
The four humans behind the couch were completely focused on each other while the one behind the arm of the couch was focused in the direction of the dinner table with his rifle raised not even glancing in her direction. Seeing this she felt safe enough to move farther out from her cover so she could see around the outer edge of the counter. And she saw it the weapon was still laying right where she thought it would be, and while she didn't know what kind of weapon it was from the looks of it she'd be able to use it.
As she looked at the weapon a new plan started to form in her head. She could stay behind the counter at least for now and see if she could take out a couple more of the humans. And when Mike and his deputies arrive she could dash out grab the weapon then launch herself out of the window and sprint to join Mike while using the weapon to defend herself. It would be risky but she remembered what Anthony had said back in the field about her being able to run faster then the human in the field could react and she was hoping that it would be the same with these humans.
She started to slowly pull back so she'd be in cover when she reignited the fight. But the human by the arm of the couch must have caught her movement in his peripheral vision as he first glanced in her direction then did a double take staring wide eyed at her. They stared at each other frozen for the length of a heart then she raised her pistol to kill him and the human threw himself towards the entrance of the hallway yelling. "On our right!"
She fired two rounds at the human one catching him in his vest and the other in his arm making him stumble and yell out in pain but he managed to get into the hallway and out of her sight. The four humans behind the couch spun around towards her weapons raised she barely managed to make back behind the counter before several burst of bullets filled the space she had just been.
She made a mental note that she had nine shots left as she peeked around to see what the humans were doing. She couldn't see the human that had dove into the hallway but the other four had stopped shooting at her while they scrambled to reposition themselves. One of them vaulted over the corner of the couch to get behind the other arm of the couch so that the entire length of the couch was between her and him with his back to the window. Two of them staid behind the couch but they shifted so that they were both completely blocked from view. And the fourth was quickly backing towards the front door obviously hoping to take cover outside.
Now that they were scattering and since they were all dressed the same she wasn't sure which one was their leader. But when the human running for the door slipped on some broken glass and fell cursing she zeroed in on him as soon as she heard his voice having no doubt that he was their leader. And she planned to take full advantage of him being out in the open. But the human's leader was recovering from his fall pretty quickly and she didn't want to risk him getting away if she missed. So instead of aiming for his head right off the bat she put a round right into the center of his back and the force of the bullet hitting his armor forced him back to the ground, then she fired a second into his leg for good measure. And then she readjusted her aim to take the third and final shot that would put a bullet through the humans head and squeezed the trigger.
But nothing happened she squeezed the trigger tighter but it wouldn't move. She looked down at her BlackRabbit and to her horror saw that the shell casing from her last shot hadn't been fully ejected and was now stuck in the the slide-action of her pistol jamming the weapon.
She hopped backwards so that she was completely behind the counter trying to force the slide back and dislodge the shell casing.
As she did one of the humans yelled. "Her weapon's jammed take her down now before she fixes it!" Though which one she wasn't sure as she wasn't paying them much attention.
She managed to dislodge the shell casing easily enough, but when the slid of her pistol had hit the shell it had been knocked out of it's track and now was tilted at a slight angle. No matter how hard she pulled on the slide or how hard she hit it she couldn't get it to move more then a fraction of an inch. Then the area around her became shade darker she stiffened and looked up to see a black clad human with blood running down his right arm standing just inside the entrance too the kitchen staring down at her.
Anthony's POV
He was staring up at Jackson's smiling face he could clearly see the sadistic gleam in Jackson's eyes as a thin line of blood rolled down the side of his neck. But out of no where there was a flash and a resounding boom and the right side of Jackson's head including most of his face seemed to instantly melt away. He was showered in blood and bits of flesh and bone as Jackson was blasted sideways off of him.
He immediately started to wipe the blood out of his eyes then he held a hand to his throat gasping for air now that Jackson's crushing weight was off his chest. He turned his head to the left and saw the pulverized bloody mess that was now Jackson's head. Then he looked over to his right and saw that the trapdoor was open and Chris was standing there only his head and shoulders sticking up out of the opening to the basement holding a smoking shotgun in his shaking hands, with tears running down his face which was a mixture of fear and horror.
Another yell from the woman drew his attention then he looked back at Chris who was still frozen and the realization that his little brother was out in the open and in danger sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through his system. He rolled over and grabbed Jackson's pistol then rolled back over aimed and pulled the trigger (Bang,Bang,Bang) he had only meant to fire a single round but apparently Jackson's pistol was a full auto so it fired three rounds before he let go of the trigger. All three rounds connected but all three rounds hit the body armor over her chest. The woman grunted as as the bullet impacts and that distracted her allowing Riot to get past her guard and start to rip out her throat.
Keeping his grip on the pistol he rolled over on to his hands and knees and crawl over to Chris. Tears were still flowing freely down Chris's face, he was trembling, and Chris seemed to be looking right through him like he wasn't there. "Chris. Come on little bro look at me." His voice was so nasally and rough he barley recognized it as his own.
But it seemed enough to snap Chris out of it and got his little brother to finally look at him but it also seemed to break whatever was holding him together. "H-he was going to kill you. S-so I-I s-sh-sh-!" That was all Chris managed to get out before he completely broke down.
He pulled his brother forward hugging his head. He knew all to well what his little brother was feeling but it was some what worse since Chris didn't have the emotional control that he did. "It's alright you did good little bro, you did good."
"B-but I killed him! I killed him!" Chris sobbed.
He pulled back just enough to press his forehead to Chris's so he could look him in the eye. "I know Chris, I know. But like you said he was going to kill me so you did what you needed to do. I would have done the same thing for you, just like Mike would have, like mom, and dad, or grandpa, or anyone else would have for their family. You have nothing to be ashamed of you did the right thing dad would be proud of you and don't you ever doubt that." He kissed his Chris's forehead before pulling back. "Alright I'm sorry I know you need somebody right now but their in the house and Judy's up front fighting by herself. So I need you to go back down there and this time stay down there do you understand me? Stay down there until one of us comes and gets you."
Chris nodded as he gulped air trying to calm himself down. Then as Chris backed up down the stairs and he closed the trapdoor behind his brother and quickly placed the panel back into place before using what was left of the china cabinet to help push his way back up to his feet. Once he managed to get back on to his feet reached down and grabbed the assault rifle from the hands of the of the man who was first into the hallway slinging it over his shoulder and raided the pouches of the man's vest grabbing three spare clips before picking up his shotgun. His movements were stiff and sluggish as each movement he made with his upper body hurt. He leaned sideways up against the china cabinet facing his mom's room groaning, he closed his eyes and tried to prepare himself so he could push through the pain when he heard yelling from down the hall. "On our right!" The yell was quickly followed by more gunshots.
He spun around in the direction of the yelling and gunshots causing him to winced in pain from the sudden movement. But he didn't have anymore time to lick his wounds as he saw a distinct human like shadow enter the hallway and lean against the wall at the end of the hallway so he pushed off from the cabinet and whispered. "Riot Anriesen." Then he started to move down the hallway keeping his movements slow and staying in the shadows as much as he could with his shotgun raised and Riot on his heels. He was hoping to get close and catch whoever had just come into the hallway by surprise, however he didn't make it to far before he heard several more gunshots, a pained yell, and then he heard someone shout."Her weapon's jammed take her down now before she fixes it!" A few seconds later he saw whoever it was at the end of the hallway push off the wall then exit the hallway and head in the direction of the kitchen. He broke into a run knowing full well he had to get out there right now and help Judy or she was dead. But even if he made it out there in time if Mike didn't show up soon they were both dead.
Judy's POV
She hesitated as she stared down the barrel of a rifle caught in a moment of indecision between weather she should try to run or attack the human and try to overwhelm him. But before she could move or the human staring down at her could squeeze the trigger there was a shotgun blast from behind the human and her eyes followed the human as he was blasted forward. The human landed so that he was partly laying on the goateed human's body blood pouring from the base of his skull and the back of his neck where his fleshed looked like it had been mulched revealing shattered chunks of his skull and vertebrae.
She was so shocked that she stared at the human for a second not completely taking in what she was seeing, then she quickly poked her head around the corner of the counter and saw Anthony. She couldn't believe her eyes he was covered in blood, most of his face was swollen, and his nose was at an odd angle but it really was Anthony.
As she watched Anthony slide the pump-action for his shotgun for a new shell and swung the weapon around towards the front of the house. That one movement was what snapped her out of her state of shock as she once again registered the presence of the four other humans in the room. Their leader was still laying on the floor clutching his leg, one of the humans who had been hiding behind the back of the couch had come out from behind it and was still standing out in the open only a few feet from Anthony, while the other two had stayed where they were.
Anthony quickly swung the butt of his shotgun towards the closes human to him knocking the human's rifle aside before he slammed the butt of his weapon down on the middle of the rifle knocking it from the human's grip. But when Anthony attempted to hit the human in the head the human deflected the blow then punched Anthony in the side before trying to yank his shotgun from his hands.
As Anthony wrestled with the other human over his shotgun he yelled. "Riot Umbringen!" And the tod who looked just as battered as his owner darted around Anthony and his attacker straight towards the human's leader who had started to crawl towards the front door. Their leader tried to pull his sidearm in order to defend himself but the tod bit down on the human's hand thrashing his head back and forth tearing up the human's hand before he had the chance to pull the trigger.
She watched as all of this happened but she was also completely aware of the two other humans that weren't being occupied by Anthony or Riot. These two humans both seemed to be torn between shooting Anthony who was obviously a bigger threat or shooting Riot who was attacking their leader. But she was getting over her own shock at seeing Anthony alive and she didn't want to give the two remaining humans a chance to get their thoughts in order.
She jammed her pistol back into it's holster before sprinting out and around the counter hopping over what was left of the TV, and without slowing her pace she scooped up the strange weapon from the floor and changed direction so she was heading towards the window. Because the couch had been moved she had to jump up and run across the top of the coffee table which caught the attention of the human standing between the arm of the couch and the and the window. But by the time the human had started to react to her movement she had already reached the edge of the coffee table and had launched herself into the air heading straight towards him. She pulled her legs to her chest and kicked the human in the chest just like she had done earlier while keeping a tight grip on her new weapon. This time the human flipped backwards out of the window as he slammed into the window seal.
And once again pain seared through her chest just as badly as before, this time she already knew what to expect. So when she landed back on the couch and the second human turned his rifle on her she was able to grit her teeth and twist her upper body to the side and pointed her weapon at the human's chest and pulled the trigger.(Rat,tat, tat, tat, tat) She had already suspected that this weapon was what Anthony and Mike referred to as an automatic, and she had been expecting a strong recoil like Anthony's Glock .45 to hit her shoulder but this weapon's recoil wasn't much more worst then her own pistol. Instead it was how the multiple shots forced the end of the weapon upwards. It pull up so hard that the bullets she fired made a line starting at the center of the human's chest were her first bullet hit up the human leaving two hole in his neck and a third in his right cheek with her last shot hitting the ceiling.
As the human fell to the ground behind the couch with a gurgle She rolled over and pushed herself up into a kneeling position raising her weapon fully intending to help Anthony with his attacker. But just as she took aim at the attacking human Anthony knocked the human's leg out from under him and shot the human point blank in the face. Then as Anthony dropped his shotgun and grabbed the assault rifle slung over his shoulder she felt a tremor run through the couch as she heard a thumb and a yelp come from behind it.
She jumped up on to the back of the couch and saw that the leader of the attacking humans had finally gotten Riot off of himself and was now continuing to crawl towards the door but now he was yelling into a radio. "Rush the house! All of you rush the fucking house now!" She aimed her weapon at the human's chest as he looked up at her and pulled the trigger. As the human fell flat on his back she grabbed her ribs and turned back towards Anthony a number of worried questions on the tip of her tongue. But before she could ask any of them Anthony moved forward taking up his previous position against the section of wall between the door and the window firing a burst of rifle fire towards the ground right in front of the window at what she assumed was the human she had knocked out the window. Then Anthony looked out into the yard and the look of fear and despair on his beaten face made her follow his gaze out of the window and her stomach fell through the floor all over again. She could see half a dozen or so black clad body's laying in the snow either dead or wounded and at least a dozen more (most of whom have bandages on their arms or legs) spread out in the yard as if they had been guarding the road and the wood line on either side of it. But now all of the remaining humans had turned and were rushing towards the house and she couldn't see how they would survive this assault.
"Where's Mike?" She asked quietly still holding her ribs.
Anthony only shook his head slowly and said. "I don't know."
They watched for a more few seconds as their attackers advanced not knowing what to do. Then she heard the rev of several engines and a large black and brown SUV followed by five black and brown squad cars all with sheriff stars painted on the sides barreled down the dirt road turning on their lights as they entered into the yard three turned to the left and three to the right parking bumper to bumper forming a line at the edge of the woods. The deputies quickly jumped out with pistols, shotguns, and hunting rifle drawn taking cover behind their cruisers. All of the attackers halted their advance and hesitated for a moment then spread out, a few of them took cover behind Anthony's shed so that they were blocked from the view of the deputies but were still in plain sight of her and Anthony while the rest knelt or laid down in the snow to make themselves smaller targets.
Then just before Mike and his deputies could start to trade shots with their attackers two large lifted pickup trucks (one deep navy blue and the other a dark red) crashed through the trees thirty or so feet on either side of the line of police cruisers. Both trucks held a dozen humans all armed with even more hunting rifles some of whom were jumping out of the bed of the trucks before they even fully came to a stop. A few of the humans are dressed in ordinary winter cloths of varying colors these humans staid close to the trucks using them for cover but most of the humans are wearing winter camouflage similar to Anthony's, and these humans spread out and lay flat against the snow where they all but completely disappear.
"I thought you said that your town only had twelve deputies" She whispered her voice filled with awe as she watched their situation go from hopeless to having their attackers out numbered three to one in a matter of seconds.
"We do." Anthony replied the relief in his voice was palpable. "But it looks like Mike managed round up some volunteers."
At that exact moment one of their attackers let loose a burst of rifle fire peppering the side of one of the cruisers shattering one of it's windows. And then the front yard seemed to explode with the sheer number of gun shots. Every time she heard the distinct (Rat,tat, tat) of assault rifle fire it was followed by metal pings, car windows shattering, and several car tires going flat. But louder and far more numerous were the (Bangs) and (Booms) of hunting rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Their attackers body armor allowed them to survive several hits from the less powerful weapons but with just the shear number of bullets being fired at them quickly overwhelmed all of the remaining attackers without her or Anthony having to fire another shot.
As the last of their attackers fell to the ground Anthony slumped against the wall his eyes drooping as if he was about to fall asleep right were he was standing and she knew exactly how he felt. She sat down on the back of the couch as both the adrenaline in her and her earlier fury drained out of her making her feel completely empty which unfortunately brought the pain in her chest and her right foot to the for front of her mind.
"8:03." Anthony whispered.
She looked up at him to see that he was looking at his watch. "What?" Was all she managed to say.
"It's been ten minutes since Mike texted us to start our attack." Anthony said letting his arm fall limp at his side.
Hearing just how little time had passed since they started their attack shocked her and only then did she take the time to take in the damage to the room and the bodies. She did a quick count in her head including the human she knocked out there were five bodies in the main room four more at the end of the hall and who knows how many are laying down in the snow outside. The fact that so many had died in such a short amount of time and the fact that six of them had died by her paw made her stomach churn.
"Anthony, Officer Hopps are you two still alive?" Mike yelled from the yard. She looked back out the window and saw that none of the deputies or the towns people had moved from their positions in the yard.
"Yeah we're alive Mike." Anthony yelled out. "And as far as I know you just got the last of them."
At Anthony's words Mike and his deputies and all the towns people started jogging across the yard towards the house keeping their weapons at the ready. Neither her or Anthony moved until Mike and the others reached the door and window.
Mike was the first one through the door followed by two of his deputies they came to a stop looking around the room so did all of the other humans who lined up at the window several of whom were gawking at her. And now she had a pistol and two hunting rifles pointed at her as one of the deputies and two of the towns people apparently thought she was a threat but other then to shoot them a glare she kept her ignored them.
After a few moments Mike looked over at them first at her then at Anthony with an expression somewhere between shock and disbelief. After another moment of looking back and forth between them he seemed to realize that they were hurt and he reached out and grasped Anthony's shoulder. "Are you alright?" Mike asked his voice filled with worry.
"Yeah Mike I'm alright. It ain't nothing that hasn't happened to me before so I pretty use to it by now." Anthony said with a groan then he tightened his grip on his rifle pointing it at the three humans who were pointing guns at her then said with a steely edge to his voice. "She's been watching my back the whole night and is one of the main reasons I'm even alive right now. So if you keep pointing guns at her I'll shoot you myself."
She looked each of the three humans in the eye glaring at them as they lowered their weapons. When she looked back towards Mike and Anthony she saw the despite the very serious and worried look on Mike's face the corners of Mike's lips twitch up a little at Anthony's threat before turned his head to look her in the eye. "And how about you Officer Hopps..." Mike emphasizing her name and title made the three humans shift their weight uncomfortably. "...how badly are you hurt?"
"I took a couple of rounds to my vest, I'm pretty sure I have at least one broken rib, and I have a nasty cut on my foot. But otherwise I'm alright Mike." She answered.
Mike looked back around the room then reached down to help Anthony up said. "Alright the towns ambulance is on it's way lets get you two outside. Tyrone take two others with you Chris and the other kids should be down in the basement go get them."
"No, no, no, no." Anthony said frantically. "I told Chris not to open up for anyone except for me, you, Judy, or my mom and to shoot anyone other then us that mange to get through the door. And he just had to blow somebody's head off a few minutes so he's going to be jumpy as hell it has to be you that gets them."
Mike hesitated then nodded saying. "Alight Tyrone, Jason your with me. Franky get Anthony outside and Penelope please carry Officer Hopps outside as well she doesn't need to be putting pressure on her foot." After issuing his orders Mike, another deputy, and one of the towns people in camouflage went down the hall.
At the same time a male deputy with short curly brown hair and olive toned skin stepped forward and put Anthony's arm over his shoulders and helped him into a standing position saying. "Come on bud lets get you outside before you fall down."
"Thanks Franky." Anthony groaned. As the deputy helped Anthony out of the door a female deputy with long black hair tied back in a bun and skin several shades lighter then Anthony's walked up to her. The woman hesitated then gestured towards her and sounded unsure as she asked. "Umm...Is it alright if I pick you up now Officer Hopps?"
For some reason after everything that's happened she found the woman's hesitation slightly amusing. She looked at the deputy's name tag and gave her an exhausted smile saying. "It's alright Deputy Swinston I don't mind." After a moment she was sitting in the crook of the Deputy Swinston's arm still holding her new weapon as she carried her outside.
Mike's POV
He was standing outside Anthony's house staring at the damage to the front of the house. The concrete wall had around the window and especially the section of wall between the window and the door were so riddled with bullet holes the concrete was chewed down so far in places that sections of rebar were showing. Eight or so of the flood lights on the front of the house had been shot out and looked like missing teeth in the line of bright lights. the window and door were completely gone shot to pieces and the main room inside had been shot to hell. He took this all in while he was trying to process everything he knew about this situation.
Pulling up in Anthony's front yard to see more then a dozen lunatics carrying automatic weapons was bad enough, although they obviously hadn't been expecting to be attacked from behind by a large group so they went down easily enough. But going into the house to see even more bodies and Anthony and Judy barely able to stand both relieved and scared him. He had been expecting to find the two of them dead so he was relieved to see them alive but it scared him to imagine what the two of them had gone through and that fear was only made worst when he went to get Anthony's brothers and sister from the basement. Once he had managed to convince Chris that it really was him and not some trick and Chris opened the trapdoor he found himself staring down the barrel of a shotgun being held by a terrified and shaking eleven year old. It took him the better part of five minutes to convince Chris that everything was alright and that they weren't in danger anymore before he managed to get the gun from Chris's hands.
He looked over his shoulder back towards the line of squad cars still being able to see clearly thanks to the flood lights even though the flares had burned themselves out several minutes before. His deputies and the folk from town who volunteered to help fight were busy dragging the body's into neat orderly lines while also collecting the weapons and any salvageable body armor from the body's. It went against his nature to disturb a crime scene since he's been a cop for fifteen years (Mike became a cop when he was twenty-two) but he had a gut feeling that any investigation he made would fail and that before this was all over that they were going to need those automatic weapons themselves. But he only gave them a passing glance to make sure they were doing as they were told before he zeroed in where Anthony and the others were.
Anthony was sitting against the the front of his SUV facing the house with a glazed far off look in his eye's while Susan (who had came in the ambulance) fussed over him and Tyrone his Deputy Sheriff still trying to ask questions. Officer Hopps was five feet away closer to the trees her side heaving as she vomited in the snow while one of his deputies Penelope Swinston was rubbing her back. Chris, Kelly, Austin, and Tomas were sitting in the back of his SUV with the door open. The younger three were alright they were obviously shocked and scared but they kept themselves preoccupied holding the four fox kits. But Chris was openly crying sitting half out the door with the middle schools councilor Miss. Sharlet holding him in a one armed hug talking to him softly, although he did wonder how much help the councilor was being with her recently fired hunting rifle still slung over her shoulder.
As he watched Tyrone seemed to give up on getting anymore answers from Anthony and started to cross the yard towards him. He waited until Tyrone was right next to him before asking. "So what's the final count?" it wasn't the biggest question on his mind but it was a start.
"Including the nine still in the house, twenty-seven." Tyrone answered with a sigh.
A wave of shock ran through him he had seen and heard a lot as cop especially the nine years that he was a cop in New York but he had never seen or heard of anything like this outside of a movie.
Tyrone looked at the house then back towards Anthony and Officer Hopps and said. "To be honest Mike I've always know Anthony was tough but from what little they told me I don't see how they're still alive."
"What happened?" He asked already knowing he wasn't going to like what he was going to hear.
Tyrone looked at the note pad that he wrote both Anthony's and Officer Hopps's statements on. "Well they started their attack right after getting your text they traded pot shots with theses guys. Then one of them go in their blind spot and shot Officer Hopps if she hadn't have been wearing her vest she'd have died right then. Anthony killed the guy who shot her and drove back the rest when they advanced on the house killing one more. Then four of them broke into the house through the back rooms Anthony headed them off and with the combination of his shotgun, him using Riot as an attack dog, and some friendly fire he took down three of the four. But the last one was too much for him and Chris shot him in the head."
"Damn." He mutter under his breath. He knew that killing that man in the field was affecting Anthony far more then he let on, but he didn't think he had to worry to much he was sure that Anthony could handle it and eventually would be okay. But Chris wasn't like his older brother and he knew he had to keep a close eye on him from now on since if they weren't careful it would affect Chris for life.
"Yeah." Tyrone said as he continued. "While that happened Officer Hopps was holding the window but was forced back behind the dining room table." Both he and Tyrone looked over at the table laying on it's side through the window, only it didn't look much like a table any more as it was filled with so many hole that entire chunks as big as his fist were missing. "It's a good thing that's she's so small." Tyrone said softly and all he could do was nod his head as he looked away from the table if Officer Hopps had been any bigger she'd be dead. "Anyway she took out another one and then Anthony rejoined her and the two of them killed the remaining five in the house at that point that's when we got here. And when I tried to get more specific details from them we didn't get too far before Anthony just shutdown. And Officer Hopps...well... But from what I did get Anthony killed seven of their attackers and Officer Hopps killed six of them. Mike they took out half of their attackers before we even got here and that's not including the one Chris killed and the one who was killed by friendly fire."
He looked back towards the squad cars and saw that Officer Hopps had stopped throwing up and was now sitting next to Anthony on the hood of his SUV while his wife started looking over her too. He buried his face in his hands saying a silent prayer to whoever had been watching over Anthony and Officer Hopps tonight because as far as he was concerned that was the only reason they were alive right now. then he asked through his hands. "And what about the two fake feds and the other two who were asking questions?"
"Coach Hill radioed in a few minutes ago by the time he and the group of volunteers you sent with him got to the motel they were already gone and it looks like they left in a hurry." Tyrone replied.
"Of course they did!" He spat angrily throwing his hands out in front of himself before crossing his arms. "They probably left the moment this group entered town."
"Mike." Tyrone said slowly then looked him in the eye. "Not to be all doom and gloom here but if they were willing to send this many people after just one kid and a bunny. Then when they find out that these guys failed..." Tyrone didn't finish.
"I know." He grumbled "Their going to try again and next time they won't be caught off guard and anyone who that gets in their way will be in danger." He stood there staring over at Anthony and Officer Hopps mauling over everything he knew about what was happening then he heard groaning from just inside the door.
He exchanged a glance with Tyrone and the two of the started creeping towards the door drawing their pistols. As they leveled with the door he saw that the masked man slumped against the wall was starting to move the man brought his hand up to hold his head. After a second the man saw them and reached for one of the assault rifles on the floor. But he stopped the man with a yell stepping through the door. "Don't even think about! Look around you, your the only one still alive! So unless you want to die don't do anything stupid." The man hesitated for a moment then the man slowly straightened up keeping his hands in the air.
He looked over at Tyrone and gave him a nod. Tyrone holstered his pistol and moved forward and grabbed the man by his arm and the back of his neck and slammed the man hard into the floor before cuffing his hands behind his back. And when Tyrone forced the man up on to his feet he said. "Alright bring him to the station once your done here until then keep two guards on him at all times. I need to get Anthony and the kids to the station Ruby's panicking and if she doesn't see them soon she'll take it out on me for making her stay behind."
When Tyrone nodded he turned and walked back out of the house and crossed the yard heading towards his SUV. Susan glanced over her shoulder when he was ten feet away and quickly walked over to him. "How are they doing?" He asked his wife once she was right next to him.
Susan sighed and said. "Anthony's as alright as he can be, his nose was broken but I reset it, his ribs, abdomen, face are covered in bruises, he has a slight concussion, and has a pressure cut over his left eye and has a small cut on his throat from a knife." Susan gave him a sad look and said. "In short it's nothing Anthony hasn't had before. As for Judy she has a nasty cut on her foot along with some serious bruising and two broken ribs from the two rounds she took to her vest. Other then that their both just tired but if we give them a bit they'll be okay."
He nodded he was worried that the mental effects from what happened tonight were going to have a greater affect on the two of them like Chris then his wife thought but he kept that to himself. "Alright let's get them to the station before Ruby loses her mind." Susan nodded her head and they both walked over and got Anthony and Officer Hopps into the SUV. Officer Hopps got in without complaint but Anthony chose that moment to snap too and refused to get in until he both reassured him that Riot and Trixy were alright and were already on their way to the towns vet clinic. And agreed to have his deputies bring Anthony his footlocker, the orange shoe box under his bed, and the tower to his desktop once they got to the station.
Then as they moved down the dirt road leaving the shot up house and body's behind between the carnage he'd seen at the house and the looks on Anthony's, Chris's, and Officer Hopps's faces when he looked in the rear view mirror he knew this night would be burned into his memory.
