Morning took forever to come. I laid on the cot trying to drown out the voices of Present Mic and Eraser whispering in the background.
Recovery came in around seven in the morning. She took a quick set of vitals, before shoving over-the-counter pain medication down my throat and giving me a quick education on my injuries. Eraser Head quietly walked me through the school towards the U.A gates. The school was much more massive than I remember it being when I first walked in for the exams.
I stopped a way down the road to finally look at my messages. Shigaraki had stopped sending me messages around three in the morning. Kurogiri only sent me one through the whole ordeal.
Kurogiri:
Shigaraki will not be pleased. I assume you did well on your exams to have sustained such injury. Inform me of your location when you are available to be taken home.
Shigaraki's messages were not as nice. My stomach turned and I felt the deep pit growing in it as I read the list of them. Anxiety and disappointment settling in.
Shigaraki: 5:03PM
What do you mean you aren't coming back tonight?
Shigaraki: 6:40 PM
For your sake you better hope you passed squirt. You were trained better than this.
Shigaraki: 8:30 PM
This whole operation rides on your success. Surely you wouldn't let the whole future of the League down.
Shigaraki: 10:47PM
You know your supposed to answer me when I message you. You better not let any information slip kid, or it might be my last finger that slips on your throat. Master would not be pleased with you if you failed us.
Shigaraki: 1:15AM
Kyana your starting to make me anxious. You know how I get when I'm anxious. Your supposed to respond when I contact you. Don't make me regret trusting you with this much responsibility.
Shigaraki 3:00 AM
Come home in one-piece kid. This thing depends on you. You wouldn't want to disappoint me, not after everything we've been through. I expect great things from you squirt. You've done okay so far so don't let things fall apart now. I'll expect you home by the end of the night tonight. Kurogiri is on standby. If you don't respond by eight tonight, I will come searching for you.
The last message left me feeling funny.
I've done okay so far? I've actually done good? This means he isn't angry with me anymore right? He said this depends on me. I don't want to disappoint him. Maybe if I do good he'll be proud of me. He'll come searching for me? So I must really matter more than I thought. Shigaraki would look for me if I wasn't important to him.
I smiled to myself, feeling slight nervous. I always hoped I had mattered to the League, but I always questioned. Maybe this is proof that I really do. I sent them back a message.
Keyana: (Group SMS Shigaraki, Kurogiri) 7:40AM
They FINALLY let me go :) I'll be at Himiki St. in about ten minutes for pick up!
Himiki street was actually about fifteen minutes from where I was. But I knew I could make it if I ran. There was no way that I would be able to travel by rooftop, not with how sore my chest was. I knew running would hurt but I could feel the anxiety to get back to base. Maybe Shigaraki would tell me I did a good job. I really hope he wasn't angry with me.
I started running, full sprint down the road. My lungs burned and my chest screamed at the action, but I wanted to make it in time. Kurogiri wouldn't wait around for long and Shigaraki would be frustrated if I was late. I could just hear the sounds of Shigaraki scratching his neck raw from the frustration of me being late.
The occasional pedestrian would look at me confused as I ran past them, but they quickly got distracted with their daily lives and moved on. The fresh air felt good against my face as I ran despite the throbbing ache in my chest.
And at last, several blocks late I had made it. I grinned wickedly at myself as I bent down with my hands on my knees to catch my breath. I wheezed as I looked at the time. I had made it in nine minutes. I took the next few moments to catch my breath, eyes occasionally darting around, hoping to see a glimpse of a dark portal forming.
When at last no one else was in view on Himiki street, the familiar mist-like portal formed nearby. I made a small sigh of relief as I wheezed over, stepping into the mist. The familiar scent of wet rotted wooden beams, dust and alcohol filled my senses.
Shigarkai sat on his usual stood in front of me facing directly towards me. I smiled widely at him, grateful to be back as I walked towards him. I stumbled slightly, stopping as I noticed he wasn't wearing his hands all over his body like he normally does. Scratch marks and bloody scabs were all over his neck. He gave me one of his short manic laughs as he held his hands out in an invitational gesture. I recognized this look. I hated this look.
"So kid," He smirked, "Want to tell me how you messed up?"
