It was already noon and the time the TriNemesis would come was unclear. However, Tanya was sure that it would only appear after sunset, since a big flying machine like this would get a lot of unnecessary attention if it would be called in full daylight.
But there was still a lot to do, first of all we had to buy a lot of good transmitters, then their needed supplies, transport them to the houses they would be placed on and then they had to be installed there. Not every house she owned however needed this signal of their death though, a single house in the middle of a house group should be enough.
For that we rented a truck. I was installing the transmitters on the roofs while Tanya made precautions to not allow a fire to spread on other buildings.
The recent events made most renters leave our houses already, but the few that stayed were forced to leave, giving their money back was a good way of doing so.
During that work many recognized me as the "preacher woman" from the press conference. It wasn't too pleasant however for me. While most just stayed with talking behind their backs about me, some decided to talk to me and make fun how the city wasn't burning and that I accused the mayor for a murder or was defending a dangerous killer. I tried to ignore them, even though I wished to teach them a lesson in behaviour.
When we were halfway done, we came towards a demonstration against the mayor. It seemed like the murder accusasion of him pulled the trigger and the citizens went on the streets to demonstrate against his latest decisions, mostly against the tourism project where the houses are buyed off.
"We shouldn't be there", I said to my boss.
"Just drive slowly to our next house."
"No, if they recognize you it would turn out bad for us. We should skip these for now."
She followed my advice and we focused for now on the other houses we had to work on.
After several hours we finally finished this long and not too exciting task and it was already evening. There was still about an hour left before the sun would set, so my boss decided to pay a last visit to the mayor.
The demonstration was still going on, we still couldn't arrive at the few houses we planned to install the transmitters on, however it had here and there violent tendencies. The police were trying to hold them back from the mayor's building, while some of them got attacked by some demonstrants, which in return made the police more defensive and aggressive.
It was not an easy task to get into that building without either being noticed by the demonstrants or being held back by the police, but knowing some side entries made it somehow possible.
When we were in, it should have been much safer for us, since the people who worked there knew us too well. However, now they were angry at us, to be fair deserved. But the usual confident and daring appearance by Tanya brought us to her goal.
Even though I said I didn't have to go with her to the mayor's room, she wanted me with her, so we both entered. As expected, he was not very pleased to meet us.
"You? What do you want here?", he said angrily to us.
"That's not a polite greeting we usually have, mayor", replied my boss and sat down at her usual place. I followed her.
"It was a mistake working with you together", he growled.
"You realize that only now? Many people around you who worked here said the same thing before."
"You knew that it would turn out like this?", he shouted.
"I didn't expect it to fall apart so fast. However, did you really believe that you would build a big tourism here? On the happenings of several women and a man being kidnapped? Even a child would call you crazy for that!"
It made him even more angrier, but he could control himself.
"Then why did you even start it in the first place?"
"I have the money, I can try stupid things and see if they work out, you don't. Mayor, you should always remember that rich people only have their own interest in mind, they don't care if a city would be left ruined when a project fails. If they would think about others they wouldn't be rich in the first place."
"But why then did she do that?", he asked her and pointed towards me, obviously meaning my speech yesterday.
Tanya didn't answer, so I spoke for myself.
"I am only a servant of her, I have not her interests. However, I am also a mediator and I cannot be silent when I know about a danger appearing. Then I would be guilty for the people who suffered or died if I didn't warn them."
"But that I let kill Kayla… you didn't have to tell that", he stuttered.
"Was it right that you ordered it? Who allowed you to decide over life and death?", I asked. "Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Everyone would have found it out not long afterwards even without me."
"You promised to not tell anyone about what we talk here!"
"And you promised when you entered the post that you would act according to the laws."
The mayor didn't reply. Tanya decided to interrupt us.
"I didn't want to come just to argue and we don't have much time left, so let's get straight to the point. How close were you working with Darius Guerrero?"
A silent threatening look was all that the mayor gave as an answer.
"Was it close enough that you know about the TriNemesis?"
When he heard the question he couldn't control himself anymore, he must have not expected it at all that we knew about this weapon. A big shake went through his body and he stood up.
"How do you know about it?", he asked me.
"We had already a not too comfortable meeting with it. Is Darius trying to call it back?", she asked him even though she knew the answer.
"Ask him yourself about it", he replied.
"Already did. It seems that today he will think he has full control of it and call it back. But remember Arelle's words: 'The same hands who built this city will burn it down'. It will get out of control."
"If yes, the city will be completely destroyed, Tanya", he said, but he didn't seem to believe her.
"Remember that I built on the city too. I put several transmitters on the houses I bought and modernized, so if it starts to attack it will first destroy these houses. Don't worry about people dying during that, nobody lives there anymore. It should be enough time to get either back control over it or for something that will stop it."
"But you would lose all the money you put into them!"
"All I did was make losses in this city, I will leave this city by tomorrow anyway. And if I leave something, I make sure nothing of me stays."
"So you won't ever invest in this city anymore?", he asked.
"No, I won't have anything to do with it anymore. Take this as my goodbyes to you."
With these words she stood up and offered him her hand.
"You mean it?", he asked, hesitating to shake her hand.
"Yes."
The mayor didn't reply, shook half angrily and half sadly her hand and accompanied her to the door.
"I really advise you to leave the city for at least today", I told him before I left the room too.
Just a few minutes were left when we left the city and went to a place where we would be safe from any attacks of the TriNemesis but could overlook the city well. After all we didn't put on the transmitters yet and had to wait until it arrived to turn them on remotely. Since we didn't know how long it would take, we made a small campfire to not freeze during the night.
The sun set down, but no TriNemesis was yet to see.
"So this was our little adventure in this city", Tanya said to me, while roasting a sausage over the fire.
"Not very fun experiences", I replied.
"Not at all", she laughed. "Honestly, I am relieved I can just leave it behind."
"You won't try taking it over?"
"Why? All that comes are losses for me and people getting their lessons."
"I doubt these can be really called lessons…"
"Darius will learn to not think of himself as someone who has everything in control, or from your point of view learn to not play God, and the mayor learns to not just do everything a rich person tells him to do or build himself up with lies."
I didn't know how to reply. Maybe they had to learn their lesson, but if they had did they?
"I just hope nobody will die", I said.
"I think only the mayor will be in real danger if he still stays in the city", she comforted me with a smile.
A short silence followed. I was looking at the sky, trying to find anything that would signal the arrival of the TriNemesis, but didn't find anything.
"Were you really that upset when you heard that Kayla was killed?", she asked me.
I nodded. The shock and sadness from it was still on me.
"How does it come? I know you visited her, but it's still not enough to be that broken with the news."
Since we had time, I told her how I met her, how her personality was and, most of all, how we had a similar past. We could understand each other and knew what problems we had. I told her too how she was interested in how I got to be who I was now and that the death of her took away her chance to fully redeem herself.
She listened to me silently and after I finished stared for a while to the fire.
"No wonder you got that upset", she said after a while. "But maybe she is still alive."
These words hit me as a big shock. What did she mean?
"Why are you saying that?", I asked her.
"You said she is intelligent, or at least should be. Yesterday night I broke into the mayor's office for papers related to AppSir, to get new entrances to the basement they have etc, and found a paper with the order to kill her. Guess how they did it?"
It was a rhetorical question, so I didn't answer.
"They had to poison her through a chocolate bar. Can you imagine that? Suddenly getting a food like that after being for weeks in prison? She would have thought something was not right. And how they disposed of her body was a joke. Just after she was laying they put her on a truck and threw her into a lake."
That was indeed not a very safe way to get safely rid of a body and making sure it was indeed dead.
"Of course I'm not saying now that she is alive for sure, but there is a chance that the murder went unsuccessful."
These words comforted me still. There was hope that she was still alive, maybe even that I would meet her one day! Of course I wouldn't want her now to go and kill people, but maybe the story I told her would make her try to change her life to a better direction. After all I was able to do it, so she surely could too!
Suddenly I noticed a shadow flying over the city. The outline gave away that it was indeed the TriNemesis. It was still very high in the sky, but came closer and closer to the city. Tanya noticed it too and prepared to press the button which would activate the transmitters.
Suddenly it stopped. It didn't move at all and was silently hovering in one place. It seemed like everything around was in pure silence, awaiting what would happen next. Did the city see it too?
"Did you hear that?", Tanya asked me all of a sudden.
I nodded. For us very silent, but still somehow hearable were the noise we have already heard before back then in AppSir's basement. A bad omen. The TriNemesis was now out of control.
Suddenly a bright light came out of it and hit something in the city, resulting in a big explosion. Immediately Tanya pressed the button and activated the transmitters. Hopefully it was enough time given before more innocent people would be attacked.
It seemed to work. The TriNemesis was turning and shaking before it flew to a place and attacked it. When the explosion happened, we got the signal that one transmitter had lost connection.
"It works!", I cheered.
It took it's time to fly over all the spots it was ordered to attack. The city was of course in panic, people screamed, sirens ringed and firefighters worked hard to stop spreading the fire. Hopefully our preparations were enough to help them out a lot.
Suddenly explosions on the TriNemesis were seen. Did those come from rockets? Was it being attacked? However, it didn't even seem to notice them and continued attacking our targets.
Then a noise, which came nearer and was louder every second, went over our head. Now even Jets tried to attack the TriNemesis. But since even rockets had shown no effect on it, the Jets couldn't stop it attacking the city.
I got more and more nervous. Would Darius be able to get control over the thing? Would it lose power before it had finished all of our targets? Would maybe somehow the attacks on it be successful?
The longer the event happened, the worse it looked for the city. Less and less transmitters were shown to be still working, while the TriNemesis seemed to continue without any problems and effort like in the beginning. More Jets appeared and more rockets exploded on it, but no visible damage was taken.
The city was in full panic now. Everything was burning, people tried to leave the city, firefighters were badly outnumbered to fight the fire. It seemed from our view that at least the fire wasn't spreading on other buildings, but it was still not looking good.
Then, finally, when the last transmitter was destroyed and the TriNemesis now flew on its own, it suddenly stopped. It just hovered in one place for several minutes without doing anything. Did Darius get back control over it?
Suddenly it moved at fast speed out of the city, before seemingly crashing into the ground. Now Darius must have got his weapon back. Hopefully these accidents won't ever repeat again!
I stood up and wanted to run to the city, but Tanya held me back.
"Where are you going?", she asked me.
"To the city! They need help!"
"They get help already", she replied and pointed towards several ambulances, firefighter and police cars driving to the city. Neighbour cities must have noticed the attack too and sent their support.
I nodded. Everything we could do we have already done, by the time we arrive they would have got everything in control.
"Let's leave this place", Tanya said and started to put out the fire. I packed up our belongings and made myself ready to go with her to another place, wherever that would be.
