Chapter Eight

The Gods must be angry

The two human Jaffa pushed Janet and Daniel to follow Varan. Romach remained close to them. Daniel noticed something hanging on Varan's belt. He whispered something to Janet as Varan led them to the back of the keep. Opening a door, they walked into a large courtyard. They saw the second stargate standing to the left. Next to it was a DHD. Beyond that a worn-out path led to a large wooden gate. Sitting in the center of the courtyard stood a white obelisk.

"What do you see?" Varan asked Daniel.

"A stargate hidden behind the keep," Daniel said. "That wooden gate, that's how you brought the drugged plague victims here." He hoped Reynolds wasn't far from where the gate was hidden. "I also see a second Asgard obelisk." He looked at Varan.

"I tire of using their words, speak to me in the god's language." Varan growled.

Daniel looked at Janet. He slightly nodded at her, as he stepped closer to Varan.

"Yes," Varan hissed. "The cursed Asgards placed this world under their protection. No Goa'uld can step one foot on this planet."

"How the mighty have fallen," Daniel said.

"Not fallen. My lord is great. He worked around the problem. He had his lo'taur come here and give an offer to the Loach. The gift of eternal life."

"And for this eternal life, he gave you the lives of his own people." Daniel did not try to hide his anger.

"They have a great ruler. For centuries we've reaped this world of its crops and people. But the war with Anubis is turning. Ba'al needs more fighters to defeat him. He is sending human warriors here to help me take over this world. Soon this world will be barren of its people. But you need not worry, Daniel Jackson. You will be long gone by then. I've informed my lord of your presence here. He wishes to have you brought to him. The Goa'uld's have long wanted to implant a symbiote in a member of the great SG1. As well as the woman doctor. We have heard that she has become an expert with the Goa'uld symbiotes. Lord Montu would like to pick her brain to find what she knows."

Daniel needed to stall Varan and give Reynolds a chance to find the gate. He took a step closer to Varan. "We have not reported back. My people will be looking for us."

"Let them try. We have a shield protecting the gate."

Daniel saw a device hanging from Varan's belt. "A shield blocking the stargate." Daniel said in English.

"I told you!" Varan angrily hissed. "I want you to use the words of your god!"

"They are not gods, they are vermin." Daniel angrily yelled at him. "Weak pests that prey on their stronger hosts.

"You will pay for your impudence!" Varan roared.

Daniel began to back up, he looked back at Janet and Romach. As Varan approached him, Janet heard Varan shout, "Jaffa, chel nok!" One of the Jaffa leaned his staff on the DHD and grabbed Daniel. Romach pulled Janet closer to him.

"My Lord picked me to be his lo'taur for a reason. I once was blessed to be a vessel for a Goa'uld, but it died. In the years following its death, I learned that I was able to use this." He took a familiar object off his belt. He slowly pulled it on.

"It is well known that you have a strong mind. I wish to test that."

He held his hand up, the Kara kesh glowed. Daniel gasped as the bright rays glowed on his forehead. He closed his eyes and fought the device.

Varan twisted his hand. "You fight me, but I will win. My Lord told me to make you pay for killing his god, Ra."

For the first time, Janet saw the hand device being used. She never realized just how horrifying it was. She saw Daniel fight against it, he gasped for breath as Varan brought it closer. Varan angrily growled and pulled back. Daniel fell to the ground clutching his head.

"They were right," Varan panted. "You do have a strong mind. But I will be the one to break it."

He had his Jaffa pull Daniel up, turning the device back on, he held his hand up.

"Stop it," Janet cried out.

"Quiet!" Varan shouted. "Or you will be next."

Janet turned around and dug her head in Romach's chest. "I can't," she cried. "I can't watch, you're killing him."

"You are weak, Tau'ri woman," Varan said. "Be quiet, I do not wish to hear you crying."

Janet turned around, "You be quiet." She held Daniel's gun in her hand.

She fired several times at the second Jaffa. Releasing Daniel, the other Jaffa reached for his staff. Romach pulled out his knife, he threw it at the human Jaffa. It landed deep in his chest.

Daniel fell to the ground. Varan pressed a button on a device on his arm. Janet began firing at him, her bullets could not penetrate his shield.

Varan jumped when the wooden gates suddenly exploded. He saw five men wearing white robes and masks entering the courtyard. They threw off their robes and masks. They aimed their weapons at Varan.

"Get down, Daniel!" Reynolds shouted. Daniel fell flat on the ground, as SG3 began firing at Varan. Romach ran to Daniel. Grabbing him he pulled him away from the gunfire.

"Daniel, are you all right?" Janet shouted.

Daniel tried to catch his breath, he pressed his hands on his forehead. "Ahh, I'll never get used to that thing." He shook his head to tried to clear it. He pointed to Varan. "We need to get the device on his belt, they have a shield on the stargate. We can't leave if it's up."

Daniel searched for Dearg. "Romach, Dearg's arrows, they can penetrate the shield. His arm, he needs to hit the device on his arm."

"Dearg!" Romach shouted. He saw him standing next to the stargate. The gun fire was too loud to be heard. Romach pointed at Varan. He mimed shooting an arrow and then pointed to his arm.

Dearg raised his bow. Pulling back, he released an arrow. It was able to penetrate the shield striking the device on Varan's arm. The shield sparked and sizzled before blanking out. Varan jerked as the bullets was no longer blocked. He fell to the ground.

"Cease fire!" Reynolds shouted.

"On his belt," Daniel told Romach. "Get the device hanging on his belt."

Romach ran to the dying Jaffa. He pulled his knife out and rushed over to Varan. He could see he was still alive. Holding his blade in front, he snatched the device. He quickly ran back to Janet and Daniel.

"I have it, friend Daniel."

Reynolds and the rest of SG3 rushed to their side. "We need to get that shield down before dialing," Daniel said. As he was looking at the device the gate suddenly started moving.

"Someone's dialing in," Reynolds said. "Get in position!" he shouted. They moved away from the gate and hid behind an arched column. Romach helped Daniel move to the side.

Janet heard a voice speaking from the device Daniel held. She couldn't understand anything they said, but she knew Daniel did.

"It's the Gould's," Daniel said. "They said that Ba'al's human guards are ready to come through the gate. They're telling us to lower the shield."

They could not understand what Daniel was saying into the device, but they had an idea.

"Get ready to see fireworks," Daniel said.

Seconds later they saw men walking through the stargate. Seeing Reynolds and his men they rushed forward and began firing. Hitting the forcefield, it immediately killed them.

Reynolds and his men kept their weapons aimed at the gate as they saw the human Jaffa bumping into the ones in front of them. Soon the bodies began piling up, they were being killed by their own shield.

Once they stopped coming, Daniel said something into the device. After he finished, the gate shut down.

"What did you tell them, Daniel?" Janet said.

"I told them to tell Ba'al that Montu's lo'taur is dead, and the Asgard now know what they've been doing to this world."

"But that's not true," Janet said.

"Now," Daniel said. "When we get back to the base, we can get in touch with them and tell them what happened."

Colonel Reynolds looked at the stargate. Ten human Jaffa survived. They stood by the gate.

"Daniel, you and Doctor Frasier get into a safe position. Men," Reynolds shouted. "Spread out." Romach and Janet helped Daniel to get out of the line of fire. Powers, Phillips and Peterson moved in different positions around the gate. The ten remaining Jaffa's used the bodies as a shield. Reynolds aimed his weapon at the gate. "Daniel, let down the shield."

Daniel pressed a button. As soon as the shield turned off, Reynolds and his men began firing. The Jaffa used their staff weapons. Bullets and staff blasts crisscrossed in the courtyard. The Jaffa aimed their weapons at SG3, they did not realize their mistake until it was too late.

Dearg had remained hidden by the stargate. Using his bow, he began firing at the Jaffa using the bodies of their comrades as a shield. He killed four before they realized someone was behind them. Reynolds and his men killed the six that was left. Getting a clear signal from Peterson, Reynolds stood up. He slowly walked up to the stargate. The bodies of the human Jaffa was piled up four deep. "That's going to take a while to clean up. It's all clear," he shouted.

Romach and Janet helped Daniel walk towards the gate. They saw Reynolds standing next to a pile of bodies. "Daniel," Reynolds said. "Once we get this cleaned up, we can dial the gate and contact SG command. Three P's, let's get to work."

"Yes, sir!" they shouted. Slowly they began dragging the bodies off the ramp and away from the Stargate.

Romach breathed a sigh of relief. "I wish you would have told me what you and Janet planned, friend Daniel."

"I'm sorry, Romach. Once I saw the Kara Kesh hanging on his belt, I knew if I goaded him, he would use it on me. It distracted him enough for Janet to load the gun." On the way to the second gate, Daniel told Janet to be ready to use the gun. He looked at Janet, she was still holding the gun. "Thanks."

She held the gun tight in her hand. "That's the first time I used a weapon off world."

"It was a good, first time."

She nervously laughed. "Yes, I'm glad General Hammond makes sure we keep up with target practice."

She looked at the gun. Seeing her hand shaking, she placed the gun on the ground. She went to Daniel and examined him. He groaned as she touched his shoulder. "I think you jinxed me," he said.

"How?" She pressed the wound.

"OW! You said you wanted your own bumps and bruises. I was the one that got them."

Janet saw his forehead growing red from the hand device Varan used on him. "Okay, Daniel. Next time we go off world, it's my turn."

"It's a deal."

Romach patted Daniel on his back. "Are you well, friend Daniel."

"I'm fine." He looked towards the Castle. "This isn't over, Romach. We still have a craicte Loach ruling this place. Plus, the Ceannard's that have been killing off god knows how many innocent people and sending them off to be enslaved. We need to let the towns people know what's been happening. Things are going to have to change. Wait a minute."

Daniel sniffed. "Do you smell something?" He began sneezing uncontrollably.

They all jumped, when a voice screamed, "What have you done?"
