Arizona smiled at the memory of her and Callie, although it was not the most appropriate thing, it was definitely most memorable. Her thoughts were interrupted by Summer coming out of the bathroom.
"Mom?" The girl looked up at her mother.
"Yeah, Sums?" The woman looked down at her ten-year-old.
"Can we come back here? I like this room."
Arizona just nodded. "Sure we can. I hope we'll be seeing a lot more of my mother."
"Me too. She's really nice. And the little kids like the bubbles" Summer giggled.
"Yeah, they do. Alright, let's head back outside?"
"Sure." Summer smiled, looking at her mother's old room one last time before the two headed down the stairs.
Callie smiled when she saw her wife and daughter come back outside. The children were still content with the bubbles Barbra had taken out. "There you two are!" Callie had wondered what had taken them so long.
"Mama, we saw Mom's old room. She said I could get posters like her!!" Summer cheered.
Callie tilted her head, opened her mouth and nodded. "Thats very nice." She looked skeptically at her wife. Those posters were not exactly appropriate for their ten-year-old from what Callie remembered.
Arizona just smiled at her wife. Obviously Summer would not get the same posters Arizona had; but Callie's reaction was adorable.
"Posters, huh?" Callie said to Arizona once Summer started playing with her siblings again.
"Not the same ones" Arizona rolled her eyes.
"Your room is still the same?" Callie questioned.
"Yeah... it's like untouched." Arizona responded.
"I always liked that room."
Arizona looked confused. "Why?"
"Cause it was badass..." Callie leaned in, getting close to her wife's ear. "And sexy" She whispered.
"Really?" Arizona laughed.
"Hell yeah. I thought it was incredibly hot. Your style in general is just... breathtaking. You're hot. Very badass" Callie nodded.
"Badass huh?" Arizona looked up at her wife.
"Mhm" Callie smiled. Especially when Arizona was in college, Callie thought of the blonde as very badass. When Callie first met Arizona, she thought the women would have been more soft or "girly" as someone might say, but she was very wrong. Callie thought the woman's bedroom at her parents house represented that perfectly. Plus, the couple had spent time during many holiday get togethers in that bedroom while they were dating. Arizona had loved to sneak off, and Callie thought it was overly sexy. Callie was knocked out of her thoughts when Summer started getting all excited. "What happened?" The woman questioned.
"Mommy's Mom is gonna show us pictures from when Mommy was little!!!" Summer said excitedly. She was beyond curious about Arizona. She knew practically everything about Callie from stories her grandmother told, but Arizona's life was such a mystery.
"Oh yeah?" Callie smiled. She knew this was good for her wife and her children, and was happy they finally were getting this.
"Yeah cmonnnn" Summer grabbed Callie's arm, tugging at it.
"I'm coming sweetie" The woman said quietly, looking back to see where Arizona was.
"I'm right here babe" Arizona noticed Callie was looking for her, something she had done at lot recently. Arizona knew why, and she tried to make sure Callie knew she was okay.
A few weeks earlier...
"Cal?" Arizona leaned back, resting the back of her head against Callie's shoulder. The couple had been sharing a bath together after a very long Saturday with their children. They had just stayed silent for the last few minutes, but Arizona had something she knew they needed to talk about.
"Hm?" The woman hummed, her wife felt the vibrations of Callie's chest against her back.
"What uh... what was that dream about?" Arizona knew Callie had a dream last night about her, and she knew something bad had happened. She needed to know what happened. Her wife was a mess all day, although the kids didn't notice, Arizona definitely did.
"It wasn't good" Callie kept her answer short, which just prompted Arizona to push more, and for her worry to grow.
"Yeah but what happened?"
"You got hurt."
"How?"
"You got hurt and you didn't make it..." Callie's voice drifted off.
"What?! What happened?" Arizona was now confused. Her wife had dreamed about her dying?
"You were in an accident."
"A car accident?"
"Yeah."
"And?" Arizona needed to know more.
"I was alone with the kids and I saw it on the news... It said the car we have... and it was the same highway you were going on, I was scared shitless. Then I couldn't get a hold of you" Callie's voice was low.
"How'd you know it was me?"
"Lexie called. She saw you come into the ER I guess... so I had my mom come but I left the kids with the neighbor cause I needed to see you."
"Jeez." Arizona could tell this all had felt so real for her wife.
"And I waited and waited and yelled at people and then Lexie came out... she was crying. She said you didn't make it... I don't- I don't know what happened to the baby, I forced myself to wake up."
Arizona bit her lip, if she was pregnant in the dream that meant Callie's dream had been as if it happened right then and there.
"I love you so much Arizona" Callie whispered. She couldn't begin to imagine a life where Arizona wasn't in it. The thought terrified her. Arizona was her everything.
"I love you too Callie" Arizona turned around slightly and wrapped her arms around her wife's neck. Callie easily started crying. "It's ok, it's ok, look. Cal, I'm alive... and I'm not going anywhere" Arizona mumbled, pulling away from the hug and grabbing Callie's hand. She gently rested it over her heart as her other hand cupped Callie's cheek. "See? I'm ok... and I'm not leaving you. I love you."
"I love you" Callie choked out through tears. The woman made no effort in removing her hand from Arizonas chest. She could feel her wife's steady heart beat and her warm skin.
"I'm right here" The blonde whispered, the only other sound in the room was Callie's deep breathing.
The couple stayed in that position until Callie had calmed down, and then they got cozy and climbed into bed, Callie immediately resting her head over the blondes chest to not only feel her heartbeat but feel her chest rise and fall with each breath. Arizona wrapped Callie in her arms and helped her fall asleep, praying last nights terrible dream would not come back with a part two. She knew this dream would impact her wife for a while, she couldn't imagine what Callie felt like having such terrible thoughts in her head. Arizona rubbed Callie's back and tried to ground her own thoughts. She didn't want to put herself in Callie's shoes. She had no need to imagine a life without Callie, but she knew her wife was thinking about a life without her.
Both women truly felt as though they could not live without the other. Despite their disagreements, they loved each other beyond what they could describe with words. The two had become not only lovers, but best friends. They had children together-and lots of them- there was no way one could survive without the other.
Arizona soon lost herself in sleep as well, making no effort to move Callie's head from her chest.
Back to Current...
"Good... good." Callie smiled in response to her wife and grabbed her hand gently. "I love you."
"I love you too" Arizona responded immediately, making sure all of their children safely got inside before they followed close behind.
"How are you feeling?" Callie was still concerned about Arizona because of this morning, she wanted to make sure the tension the blonde had been feeling was gone.
"I'm better" Arizona responded, closing the door behind them as they heard their children's excited voices in the living room.
"Does my mom have a dad too? My Mama does" Summer said to Barbra.
Barbra found herself rather upset; did her daughters children think that Arizona hadn't had a mother? "Of course your mom has a dad sweetie."
"Ok. Cuz I don't have a dad. I have two moms" Summer responded, "But Mama has a mom and a dad so I thought Mom did too." The girl rambled on.
Barbra smiled at how thoughtful the ten-year-old was as they sat down.
"Are we gonna see her dad? Are you married to him? My parents are married. So are my Mama's parents."
"Yes my dear, we are married. I'm sure you'll see him when he gets home."
"Where'd he go? Did he know we were coming? Mom says you can't leave when guests are coming."
"Summer" Callie scolded. The brunette was now sitting down on the other side of the couch with her wife next to her. Kayleigh was climbing all over the two of them.
"It's a perfectly valid question. He had to go help one of his friends with something" Barbra was fine with answering any questions the children had, she knew they were just eager to soak up this new environment as any young child would be. Arizona used to be the same way.
"That's nice of him" Summer responded. "What did you want to show us? I wanna see." The young brunette changed the topic, remembering her excitement.
"Oh yes! You said you wanted to see photos? I have some pictures of your mommy when she was your age!"
"When she was ten?" Summer questioned.
Barbra smiled and nodded. "Yeah, when she was ten." The woman leaned over and grabbed the albums she had taken out; she had figured this would be fun for the kids. She currently had Jackson, Max, Olivia, and Summer's attention. The two little ones were with their mothers. She placed them on her lap and opened up the first one. "This is your mommy" Barbra pointed to the first photo she saw; young Arizona next to her older brother. Arizona was dressed up in some sort of costume.
"How old was she?" Summer questioned.
"She was eight."
"Like me!!" Jackson got excited.
Callie stood up and went over to them. "I wanna see" She replied when Arizona gave her a confused look. The blonde rolled her eyes as the brunette smiled at the photo. "Cute. School play? Halloween?" Callie questioned the costume.
"School play" Barbra smiled.
"I do the school play!!!" Summer bounced with excitement at having something in common with her mother.
"You do? That's awesome sweetie!" Barbra looked over at Summer.
"Yup. Mommy said she moved a lot. Where'd she live in this picture?" Summer's curiosity struck again.
"Uhhhh..." Barbra looked at the photo and thought for a minute. "I think this was in New Mexico."
Arizona nodded, now knowing exactly what photo they were talking about.
"Where's that?" Jackson asked.
"It's far away. Further than California bud" Callie answered as she stood up straight again.
"Can we go there?"
Callie laughed. "Maybe one day."
Jackson's face lit up as Callie returned to her spot next to her wife.
"Cutie" Callie smiled at Arizona, resting her hand on the blondes leg.
Arizona scrunched up her face in response, placing her hand on top of Callie's.
The garage door suddenly opened and a loud voice filled the house. "Barbra? What's that van doing in our driveway?" Arizona bit her cheek. Of course she recognized that voice; it was her father. The blonde had no clue whether or not Daniel knew Arizona was here-- from the sounds of it, he didn't.
"Honey, it's Arizona's car." Barbra answered. "She brought over the children. Come say hello."
The man soon appeared. He stayed silent as he looked around the room. Barbra had Olivia climbing on her and flipping pages in her photo albums while the older three children were looking at the photos. The twins were holding onto their mothers legs as the couple sat close to each other, entertaining the toddlers.
"Arizona..." The man finally spoke up.
The blonde looked at her wife, who smiled at her. With that, Arizona sighed and stood up, swinging Mason onto her hip while doing so. "Hi, Dad." Arizona walked over to the man, unable to figure out what his reaction was. His face was seemingly emotionless.
Thirteen years ago...
"Mom! Dad!" Arizona rushed through the front door of her parents house. Last night, Callie and Arizona had had a long conversation, and it ended in them talking about marriage. The two had talked about marriage countless times before-but this time was different, they were just more serious. Arizona had bought a ring for Callie a few weeks earlier and was just waiting for the right time- little did she know Callie had also bought a ring. By the end of the conversation, Callie had pulled out the ring, and Arizona started freaking out. Partially because Callie just pulled out a ring on her, but also because she had planned to propose to Callie soon. Callie was waiting in the car- the couple had passed by the house and Arizona had desperately wanted to update her parents on her relationship status.
"Arizona, honey, what's up?" Daniel looked up from his chair in the living room.
Barbra also looked up.
"I'm engaged!" The young blonde couldn't help but blurt it out-she was beyond excited. She held out her hand to show off the very stunning ring her girlfriend-now fiancé- had gotten her.
"You're- You're what?!" Barbra stood up and grabbed her daughters hand, looking at the ring before pulling the blonde close to her. "Arizona" The woman spoke softly. She didn't sound mad or upset- but she surely wasn't happy or excited either.
Daniel had stood there, staring at Arizona, emotionless. He wanted to be happy for his daughter, but he also wanted to be angry.
"How did this happen?" Barbra asked.
"Calliope and I were talking and... we are ready to take this next step. We even had both bought each other rings without even knowing" Arizona laughed.
"Well, that's good for you Arizona" Barbra smiled somewhat coldly at her daughter.
Arizona ignored the cold expression, the smile on her face wide as ever. "We wanna get married this summer!"
"You're graduating college this summer" Daniel looked at his daughter, confused.
"In May, we wanna get married in like August."
"That's really soon? Right out of college? That's a lot of commitment" Daniel continued.
"Dad, I'm ready!"
"Okay..."
"Well, I have to go. Calliope is in the car waiting, but we were driving by I wanted to tell you guys the big news!!!"
"It was nice to see you Arizona" Daniel nodded at his daughter.
"I love you guys!" Arizona made her way back outside and rushed over to Callie's car, getting into the passenger seat.
"Hey what'd they say?" Callie poked at Arizonas shoulder as the woman got buckled.
"They're pissed." The blonde sunk down in her seat.
"Ari, they'll get over it. Are you happy?"
The blonde sat up again and turned to face her fiancé "Of course I am. I want to marry you. I want forever with you."
Brown eyes lit up at the adorable statement. "That's all that matters babe, they'll get over it. They always do." Callie was aware that Arizona's parents didn't like her very much, she knew it made Arizona upset, but there was nothing they could do. "I want forever with you too."
"I know you do." Arizona just smiled, Callie always knew how to make her feel better. "Thank you."
"Mhm any time my love" Callie flashed a smile at Arizona before focusing on the road as she drove.
Back to Current...
"Arizona" The man repeated. He looked at his daughter. She was pregnant- a small child was on her hip. She was a mother. The man was conflicted. His eyes glanced over to his daughter's wife. "Get out of my house."
