Trixie poked her head into the office. She could see Mrs. Tindell working at the computer, preparing all the details for graduation. Trixie cleared her throat, attracting Tindell's attention.
"Trixie!" she greeted warmly.
"I have the papers from Mr. Cromwell," Trixie said, holding out the stack of papers. There was a lot of logistics when it came to graduation. Which student was going to which college. The ranking of each student. The organization of the students. Where they were all going to sit. The different honors of each student. And the teachers in charge were sending papers back and forth to help organize it all and Trixie generously volunteered to use her study hall to deliver some.
Mrs. Tindell took the papers and looked over them.
"Yeah, I have the box Mr. Cromwell wants," Tindell said, sliding back from her desk. "Give me a second." Trixie watched with a smile as Tindell disappeared in the back.
She had to work fast. Tindell was on an excel sheet with the academic calendar. She had to remember that. She glanced behind her real quick before taking the mouse and pulling up the sheet containing the student names, all the names of every kid in her grade. They had a few other tidbits like GPA, ranking, birth date, awards. But Trixie was only interested in the names.
The sheet was organized by GPA. Trixie clicked the top of the sheet to organize the first names alphabetically before scrolling down to the M's.
"Madison, Michael, Morgan…" Trixie muttered, reading the first three names. Trixie scrolled through the top then began scrolling through the entire list, muttering the name of every student and thinking of their face. She knew every single one of them. There was no student in that list that she didn't know, nor any that she had only met in the past few weeks.
She got what she needed. She clicked the GPA column and organized it by GPA again before scrolling to the top, then clicking the tab to reopen the calendar. She stepped back and pushed the chair back in. If she got caught messing with the teacher's computer she would be in a ton of trouble.
She stepped back and acted innocent. She was out of her element here. She was used to getting things by bargaining. People want something. She wants something. So, they make a deal. Doesn't really work with school staff though.
Finally, Mrs. Tindell came back with the box for Cromwell.
"And thank you," Trixie said, taking the box. She needed some time to think about her next move.
-.-
After school, Trixie headed for the park to watch the potential murder of her boyfriend. He just couldn't resist fighting Maze. Despite all her protests, he went over her head and asked Lucifer, counting his easy-going attitude, to arrange the fight.
It seems she was the last one there as she drove to the soccer field. It was just a large field of grass with metal bleachers to one side and soccer nets at either end. Plenty of room to spar. And the bleachers meant there could be an audience.
Chloe was putting boxing gloves on Maze but Tony didn't have any protective gear on. That was probably Maze's request not to give Tony gloves. But did they really have to skip a helmet?
Lucifer and Eve were on bleachers waiting eagerly for the fight. Trixie pulled into the parking lot. She got out and locked the car behind her, not sure whether to storm up to Tony or let her worry show. Either way, she made her way to the grassy field, the bantering between the parties growing louder.
"Trix," Tony called out excitedly. Trixie was not as enthusiastic.
"Tony, what were you thinking?" Trixie hissed. Even before she knew the truth about Maze this would've been terrifying. Now knowing she was a demon from hell made things a million times worse.
"It'll be fine," Tony said, waving away the danger. "Just a friendly sparring match and I can show some moves."
Trixie motioned in the air like she wanted to strangle him. If Maze didn't kill him, she might do it instead.
Meanwhile, Chloe was helping Maze with boxing gloves. They had to take extra precautions in this case.
"And please, no elbows or knees, and kick below the waist," Chloe said.
"Why are you so scared of me hurting him?" Maze asked. "I thought you don't even like him."
"I don't, but Trixie does," Chloe explained. "And just because I don't like him doesn't mean I want him in a stretcher."
"Fine, maybe a broken leg," Maze said with a shrug. "If you can't take a broken leg then you can't protect Trixie from a mob or mafia. They love using baseball bats to break a person's leg"
"No!" Chloe said firmly. "No broken legs. Or fractured skulls. Or dislocated shoulders. Tony isn't going to be protecting Trixie from any mob."
Maze just shrugged off Chloe insistence to drop this.
"Well, at least he's good in bed, at least for what Trixie's told me."
"Ok, yeah, that's enough," Chloe interrupted. She did not need to hear the details of her daughter in bed with him. "And you're sure you don't want him to have any gloves on?"
"In hell, we trained with spiked knuckles. What I don't understand is why I have to wear gloves. He can't hurt me."
"They're not for you. They're for him. No missing teeth either."
"Can't be good in a fight if you can't take a punch"
Chloe threw up her hands in defeat. It was always hard to tell what to let Maze endure as a demon. If it had been human, not a chance in hell Chloe would let her spar without gloves on Tony. But Chloe knew Maze probably eats worse for breakfast.
"Alright, but if you kill him, I'll leave Trixie to deal with you," Chloe concluded.
The arena was set so Chloe joined her husband on the park bench. Trixie sat on one of the lower steps. Eve was on near the top of the bleachers.
Maze and Tony got into position, a good five feet apart. Tony brought his fists to his chin.
Eve stepped onto the field, hand above her head.
"And round one, we have defending champion Mazikeen Smith!" Eve announced. "Versus the challenger and Trixie's boyfriend: Anthony Ricardo! Winner takes all through knockout or submission. And...FIGHT!"
Eve quickly scurried to the bleachers to get a good angle.
And thus, the fight began.
The two fighters stood a good seven feet apart. But Trixie would swear Maze just kinda phased through reality forward to close the distance. Tony also picked up on how quickly Maze was in his face. He brought his hands up to protect himself but Maze didn't even go for a punch. Realizing nothing happened, he peeked over his fists. And that's when Maze wound her fist back for a punch before throwing it. Extremely telegraphed but would be extremely powerful if it landed.
Tony brought his fists in front of his face again and flinched at the punch. Trixie and Chloe gritted their teeth nervously. Lucifer leaned forward in his seat excitedly.
But even that punch didn't land. By the time Tony lowered his fists to see why he hadn't been hit yet, Maze had taken two steps to get behind Tony and gave him a good kick in the tailbone that made him either leap or fly a good foot off the ground.
And that was how the match went. Maze was rush in with either a telegraphed powerful punch or a flurry of regular punches, something that would make Tony cover his face in defemse. Then Maze would reposition herself to deliver the real hit. Sometimes it was a kick to the butt or legs. Or maybe a punch to the gut.
Tony was whipping himself back and forth, trying to keep Maze in front of him.
This seemed more like humiliation than a fight.
Eve was cheering from the top seat.
"WHOO! You can do it, Maze!"
She can do it? Of course she could do it. But could she not overdo it?
"Ooooh, well done, Mazikeen," Lucifer laughed and clapped.
Trixie rolled her eyes. He was not helping the situation.
"Take it easy, Maze," Chloe shouted.
Well, at least her mother was trying to not get Tony killed. And at least Maze seemed more intent on bruising Tony's ego than his body. But Trixie waited with bated breath for something bad to happen.
But Trixie was absolutely floored by shock when she saw what happened next. After a good minute of trying not to get his block literally knocked off, Tony suddenly managed to duck under a punch, stepping forward to close the distance before landing a punch against Maze's jaw. Tony was clearly shocked by this as he quickly lost balance and fell into Maze. The only thing louder than the two of them falling to the ground and into the grass was the sound of three jaws hitting the floor as Trixie, Lucifer, and Chloe stared in utter stunned silence at the impossible event that just transpired.
Eve was still cheering.
"Bravo, Tony!" she laughed, clapping.
Trixie snapped back to reality. She didn't want Maze hurt either. Could a demon even be hurt by a human punch? Trixie stood up and quickly ran over to them. She reached them as Tony slowly lifted his face from Maze's stomach which cushioned his fall. He didn't get up and remained on his hands and knees to look at his opponent.
On the ground, Maze was smirking.
"You've been holding back?" she asked.
"Hey, what can I say?" Tony remarked. "I like waiting for the last moment before pulling off my grand victory."
Maze smirked again.
"You sure you won?"
Trixie recognized the position. Maze had her legs wrapped around Tony's body, his head and one arm fed through her legs and his other arm outside. It was a triangle choke. And Maze simply tightened her thighs and pulled his arm toward her and Tony's eyes bulged. He quickly found himself tapping her thigh to indicate his surrender.
Eve leapt down the bleachers to conclude the fight.
"And victory through submission!" Eve announced. "And that's the match! And the WINNER IS MAZIKEEN SMITH!"
The battle was over with the only possible outcome that didn't result in a body bag. Trixie helped Tony up while Maze sprung to her feet.
The rest of the crowed quickly joined them.
"You ok?" Chloe asked Maze who took her gloves off and was massaging her jaw. Maze just waved away Chloe's concern. This was nothing.
"Well, seems Anthony is more capable than we gave him credit for," Lucifer laughed. "I had no idea."
"You think that was something?" Tony asked, panting to catch his breath. "Wait until next time when I actually beat her."
"Next time?" Trixie repeated in disbelief. "What, one brush with death wasn't enough?"
"I was fine."
Trixie had half a mind to tell him his sparring partner was a demon from the depth of hell who could rot her own face and probably shoot fiery brimstone from her eye sockets, see if he still thought he was fine.
Crap, her face. How did she forget that? Trixie has seen Maze's real face before during Halloween. At the time, she thought it was a costume. The truth had literally been staring her in the face for years. If she remembered, Maze only rotted half her face. Could she do that to her whole face? What did her body look like? Could she only rot herself or was it some mystical power that she could rot anything she touches?
Trixie wanted to know, but she couldn't ask just yet. She had to finish her mission first then she could get the answers to these questions.
"You did ok for a first timer," Maze remarked. "Daily practice for a month and you might be strong enough to protect Trixie."
"Always with the protecting me, Maze," Trixie sighed. "There's nothing for Tony to protect me from and I can take care of myself."
They all turned around when the heard a car pull up, the doors opening to let out its occupant before closing again.
"Uncle Amenadiel!" Trixie called out excitedly. Amenadiel and Linda walked over, five year old Charlie hanging from both their hands between them.
"Ah, brother," Lucifer greeted. "What is this? Celestial family's night out?"
Chloe, Trixie, Linda, and Amenadiel looked at Lucifer with brief bewilderment that he would talk about celestials so openly in front of Anthony. But it seems that Anthony simply dismissed this as Lucifer's eccentrics.
"We were driving by and saw your car and thought we'd drop by," Linda said.
Charlie had certainly grown, now reaching their waists and wearing blue shorts and a Hawkman T-shirt. He looked up at his parents.
"Can we stay for a bit, daddy?" he asked.
"Sure," Amenadiel with a warm smile. Amenadiel effortlessly hoisted Charlie onto his shoulders. "Care to join us?" Amenadiel then asked the Morningstars.
"Eh, why not?" Lucifer said with a shrug. Lucifer took Chloe hand while Trixie took Tony's. The four couples and the child had just started walking when Linda spoke up.
"Hey, Trixie," she said. "Could I speak to you in private for a moment?"
Tony looked rather disappointed that he had to unhand Trixie.
"I'll catch up," Trixie assured him before planting a peck on his lips. But this did spur another disappointed look that a peck was all he got. Tony joined the others walking to the playground while Linda stayed behind with Trixie. The two of them still walked toward the playground with the others but trailed behind.
"So, Trix," Linda said, putting a hand on her shoulder while they walked. "Anything new?"
"Eh, nothing much," Trix said with a shrug. "Just glad my mother isn't getting on Tony's ass."
"What about your stepfather? Anything new with him? Finding out any secrets about him?"
Trixie stopped walking. Could Linda actually mean? No, that's impossible.
"You know," Trixie stuttered. "Y-you…you know that he's…" Trixie looked forward, making sure no one was in earshot. "You know he's the devil?"
Linda smiled and nodded.
"I've been there, and I've counseled three other people who found out. And I noticed your reaction when Lucifer mentioned celestials. How are you? Did he finally tell you?"
"Tell me that almost ten years of roleplaying turns out to be true?" Trixie laughed. "No, I accidentally saw his real face."
"You mean his devil face," Linda corrected. "The face you see on Lucifer now is his real face. He just can change it."
"Well, I saw it," she said.
"And how are you?" Linda asked. "The ones that find out the truth by seeing his devil-face usually have it harder."
"Better now. It was rough the first two weeks. But, I got…clarity."
Linda looked at Trixie, skeptical that the teenage girl could be ok, especially since everyone in the past with the exception of maybe Charlotte was traumatized.
"If you're sure," Linda said. "But if there's anything you need, let me know."
Trixie paused to think about this offer. This was perfect. She didn't
"Actually," Trixie said. "There is something you can do."
-.-
Four years ago
Tires screeched as Chloe pulled back into the Ricardo driveway. The situation could not be dicier. She couldn't bring Lucifer to a hospital. If she did, she'd have to stay in the vicinity or the hospital staff would begin wondering why his skin's impenetrable. She couldn't tell Ella or Dan or anyone at the precinct because they would make her take him to the hospital.
She had to leave him dying in his own bed.
Anthony was already walking up to greet her.
"Detective Decker," he said in his normal robotic tone. "How may I help-"
Chloe shoved past him. She needed Jack Ricardo, not his nephew. Chloe marched up to the front door of the mansion and pounded on it. She probably should've waited longer but she pounded on it again. She could feel the eyes of armed guards on her, probably assuming it was some sort of attack with how much force she was hitting the door with.
Finally, Sasha Ricardo opened the door.
"May I help you?" she asked with a venomously sweet smile.
"I'm here to speak with Jack Ricardo," Chloe said.
"I'm afraid my brother isn't here," Sasha replied. "He left about two hours ago."
Chloe knew that part was true. He went after her a few hours ago. But did he come back?
"Could you call him?" Chloe asked, trying to control her panic. "It's urgent."
"I'm afraid not, Detective," Sasha replied. "I can take a message."
Chloe clenched her fist. What was she supposed to do? She had already asked the precinct if they had seen Jack Ricardo and they said no. And the Ricardo family certainly wasn't going to help her. But what could she do? Only Jack the Reaper could know what he injected Lucifer with.
"Your brother attacked and injected my partner with something," Chloe said steadily.
"Really?" Sasha said skeptically. "Well, I hope you have proof this time." Normally this sort of mocking would not phase Chloe in the slightest. But it was Lucifer's life on the line. "But, if you really think my brother Jackie knows something, perhaps you should do something about it. After all, he may be in the house right now."
Chloe knew this was a gloat, a challenge for her to say screw the rules and force the answer out of them.
"This isn't over," Chloe snarled, turning around.
"Your man must not mean much to you if you can't even break a few rules for him," Sasha sneered, stopping Chloe in her tracks. "Are your little protocols really worth more than him?"
Those words cut deep. She remembered when she stood crying in front of her father's killer, gun pressed against his head. Nothing would make her happier than to pull the trigger. But she knew it wasn't right. She had already won when they caught him.
Did the same apply here? It still wasn't right. But she hadn't won. Lucifer still might die and there wasn't a thing she could do. Taking a deep breath to recompose herself, she stormed back to her car.
-.-
Chloe did drive to the precinct but she ended up sitting in her car. What could she possibly do at the precinct? She's already called them three times to ask if they found Jack Ricardo and still nothing. She had nothing to go on. She wanted to call Ella for help but there's way she could know what poison Ricardo used. The fact it could affect Lucifer even when she wasn't around had to mean there was something special about it. No one could know what poison was used.
Frankly, Chloe considered going to every church, cult hideout, and voodoo shop, trying to ask them if they had any knowledge of any poison that could affect the devil, but Lucifer had always made it abundantly clear that anyone claiming to have any weapon or drink or antique of celestial nature was lying or lied to.
Chloe started her engine again and headed back to Lux. She'll check in with the rest of the celestial insiders see if they can come up with a plan before she tries getting in contact with Ella.
-.-
Chloe took the elevator back up to the penthouse, fighting to remain calm so no one would suspect anything. This week was Dan's turn with Trixie thank god and she had the day off since she got attacked by Jack. She would need this time to save Lucifer. She really hoped she didn't have to, that this was all a fluke and when she got back, he would be fine again. But as she reached the top floor, she saw Lucifer was still in bed, his face still a sickly blue.
She ran over to Linda who sat on the couch.
"No change?" Chloe asked. Linda just shook her head. Chloe had hoped that this was a fluke, that he would get better once she was out of range. But she had gone all the way back to the Ricardo estate and no change.
Amenadiel and Maze were still distraught, not sure what to do. He looked Chloe's way. But Chloe could only shake her head. No sign of Jack Ricardo and no idea where he could be.
They were back at square one.
"This doesn't make any sense!" Maze exclaimed, a punch sending a vase flying across the room. "There's no poison on this planet that should hurt him."
"What if it's not from this planet?" Linda suggested.
"What, like Martians?" Amenadiel asked.
"No! Like a celestial poison. Could such a thing exist?"
"I guess it's possible," Amenadiel said with a shrug. "I've never heard of one but if there is one it would do the trick. Some sort of elixir or potion."
"But where would a human get a potion that would work on celestials?" Maze asked. Chloe listened in, the least knowledgeable and experienced of the four. But something occurred to her. It was something that took place almost a year ago during a much less pleasant time when she was doing something she would like to forget.
"Kinley," she muttered. Too soft for Linda to hear but loud enough for Maze and Amenadiel to hear.
"What?" they both asked.
"Back when I…nearly…sent Lucifer back to hell," Chloe explained. "Kinley was going to use an elixir to perform an exorcism that would banish the devil to hell forever. How did he get that information?"
"Why does it matter?" Maze asked.
"It certainly begs the question how are humans finding out about us," Amenadiel said. "And where are they getting these things?"
"Exactly, maybe Kinley got help from the same source," Chloe suggested.
"But we can't be sure," Linda pointed out. "You never went through with his plan. It might not have even worked."
"Well, there's only one way to find out," Chloe said. "One of us needs to go to Hell and talk to Kinley." Her eyes fell upon Amenadiel. Surely the angel could fly between the Earthly and hellish planes. But Amenadiel's face sagged.
"I can't fly down to hell, Chloe," he said. "Lucifer locked the gates when he left so no celestial could travel down there. And the only one who can unlock them is Lucifer!"
And the room fell silent once more. The very concept of the plan itself was built on a rocky foundation: that Kinley would know something about an elixir that would affect celestials. Now they couldn't even talk to him.
She looked over at Lucifer, his skin getting paler and paler. Here he was dying of poison and she couldn't do a damn thing.
Just a few hours ago she had been angry over the idea that she had been manipulated to fall in love with Lucifer, wishing that she could get control of her own life and be completely confident that it was her in control. It was as if someone or something had chosen to grant her wish in the most perverted way possible. This was why he had run away three years ago, to take himself out of the equation so she didn't have to follow any emotional manipulations.
Wait…
Three years ago…
Candy Morningstar…
Poisoning…
"How did he do it?" Chloe asked, Amenadiel and Maze looking over. "Three years ago, I nearly died from poison. Lucifer managed to get the formula to save me. No one knew how and the only thing he ever said was that he went to hell. Did he fly down there or something?"
The celestials in the room exchanged glances. They have kept so much from Chloe it was hard to keep track.
"No," Amenadiel said. "Back then he cut off his wings and I had lost mine."
"Then how did he go to hell?" Chloe asked. Chloe could tell they were all afraid of telling her.
"He died," Linda said. And just like that she understood why they didn't want to tell her. They all knew she was still grappling with her guilt over what she did. She knew Lucifer had done a lot to protect her, but she never knew he had actually died and gone to hell for her.
And to think she had betrayed his trust tried to send him back there…
"Well, then," Chloe concluded. "That's how we're going to do it. I'm going to die, go to hell, and get the information we need."
"What?" Maze barked. "No!"
"Chloe, she's right," Linda agreed. "I can't think of a person more deserving of heaven."
"Well can't I ask the judge to send me to hell or something?" Chloe asked.
"You are your own judge," Amenadiel explained. "Your subconscious judges whether or not you deserve to go to hell. It's what keeps a person in hell to be tortured until they subconsciously believe they no longer deserve it."
"What, so I just will myself to go to hell and will myself to get out?" Chloe scoffed, almost praying it's that easy.
"No. The subconscious is a lot more finicky than you realize. If it was a conscious decision, then many sociopaths wouldn't go to hell since they don't feel any guilt over their actions. Your subconscious would take an objective look and dictate where you go. While it's possible that your desire to go to hell is strong enough to take you down there, there's no guarantee."
"And even if you did, you won't be allowed to look for Kinley," Maze pointed out. "You'll be locked in a cell to be tortured."
"Can't I ask a demon for help or something?" Chloe asked. "I mean, he's their king."
"They won't listen to you. Even if they did, the only way we'd be able to pull you out is if they let you out of the cell."
"Chloe," Linda said. "I know how you feel about Lucifer, but this is an even bigger gamble even when we did it. We're only hoping Kinley will know something about the poison. We're only hoping you'll be able to talk to him. And we're only hoping that any of the demons will help you to begin with. Lucifer had the benefit of starting outside. You'll start in a cell in hell."
"And we still don't even know if you'll go to hell," Amenadiel added.
"Yeah, I have an idea about that," Chloe said. "Kinley's vial. I think that's my ticket to hell."
"You mean the potion Kinley gave you?" Maze asked in confusion. "I thought that was just a sedative."
"That's what he told me," Chloe said. "Sedate Lucifer then perform an exorcism. But then why did the demons try to use it on Charlie? He told me it was a sedative. He told Lucifer it was a poison. Maybe it's my ticket to hell. Maybe the demons know something we don't."
"Let me take a whiff," Maze said.
"Lucifer usually keeps it in the safe next to his bed," Chloe said. "But I don't know the combination."
Amenadiel didn't answer. The moment he heard it was in the safe he walked to the door and grabbed the handle. With a grunt he yanked out the handle and the locking mechanism with it.
Linda and Chloe could only stare. They rarely ever see an angel demonstrate its raw strength. And something told them that the only reason the handle broke was because it was the weak point, that if it was stronger Amenadiel probably would have yanked the whole door off.
With the door broken, Amenadiel opened the safe and took out the vial. Maze snatched the vial out of his hand. There wasn't much elixir since the demon incursion from earlier used most of it but there was enough for her to pop the cork and take a whiff.
Basilisk venom," Maze listed. "Cockatrice saliva. Ghoul blood. Yeah, this is more than just a sedative."
"But will it send me to hell?" Chloe asked.
"Um…isn't there supposed to be a whole exorcism?" Linda pointed out.
"To permanently banish the devil to hell," Chloe recited. "But my trip to hell should be temporary. I just need it to take me there while I'm dead. So, will this do that?"
"It just might," Maze said. "That still doesn't mean you should. Chloe, think about Trixie."
And like some magic word, that name froze her to the spot. She was running the risk of leaving Trixie without a mother.
She never admitted it but ever since Trixie was born she has wondered if she should retire from the police force, take on a less risky profession.
"I guess just means I have to make sure I make it back," Chloe said. "Please, I need to do this."
They all looked around the room. None of them wanted her to do this. But Amenadiel said what they were all thinking.
"It might be the only way," Amenadiel said.
So, they had a plan. An awful plan. But a plan, nonetheless.
"Well," Chloe said. "I guess I'll see you in Hell."
-.-
Chloe spent the next hour pacing the floor while Maze and Amenadiel worked out the details. After watching her, Linda finally walked over.
"Hey," Linda said. "How are you doing?"
Chloe couldn't stop herself from scoffing. She knew Linda was just checking in on her, but she was going to die and go to hell. How did Linda think she was doing? This wasn't a place giving out spankings. It was a place of eternal damnation and suffering.
"Scared," she admitted. "I knew a person who went to hell and he came back…broken."
Chloe's mind went to Malcolm. She remembered he was completely off his hinges after his brush with death. Dan told her he kept talking about how he went to hell, something which now had a completely different meaning now that she knew the truth. He was so broken that his wife became terrified of him.
"Yes, I counseled a woman who was traumatized after coming back from hell," Linda said.
Yeah, this talk wasn't helping her at all. She could barely imagine all the things she would face in hell.
"But you've brought Lucifer back from hell," Chloe pointed out, mostly to reassure herself that she could get out. She thought this would make her feel better. But even without Linda answering, Chloe could see she was not assured. So, it was a lot harder than that.
Before anything else could be said, Maze and Amenadiel came back over.
"Alright, what do I need to know about Hell?" Chloe asked as she sat on the couch.
"When you wake up, you'll be in a cell," Amenadiel explained. "Hell will have your subconscious go through your history and pick out your worst sins, normally whatever it is that made you think you deserve to be down there. Your subconscious will then manifest the appropriate torture for whatever it was you did."
"Where do the demons come in?" Chloe asked worriedly.
"Demons add spice to the torture," Maze said. "We can rework the torture into something else to keep it more interesting. We're restricted by whatever they feel guilty for, but we can be creative. I reworked Hitler's torture a few times. Originally, he was tied down and cut apart by his victims. I switched up by having him spend eternity inside a gas chamber. Before I left, Mammon had it so that he gets buried alive by bodies."
"Alright, I get it," Chloe interrupted, trying to stop herself from panicking. What torture would she face? What would she be tortured for? "So, once I wake up, can I talk to the demons?"
"Not one on one. But they should be listening so just shout it and they should hear."
"But Lucifer said the demons are hiding," Amenadiel pointed out. "They might not be listening. In which case…"
"In which case I'll be trapped in hell," she said shakily.
"Even if they are listening, there's no guarantee they'll let you out," Maze said. "I know my brothers and sisters and they can't be trusted."
Chloe ran her fingers through her hair. What could she do? This plan sucked. And it looked less and less like a plan with each passing minute. But still, it was all they had. If they couldn't come up with something else, then Lucifer is dead. But if she went through with this there was a good chance she ends up trapped in hell and Trixie ends up without a mother.
"Ok, let's assume they hear me but don't let me out," Chloe said. "What can we do about it? How can we still help Lucifer?"
"If the demons listen then they can possess your body and tell us the information," Amenadiel said.
"Great, then maybe Maze can convince them to let me out?"
Maze and Amenadiel exchanged looks. Ok so the awful plan had become a bad plan but at least they had a plan. Chloe dies, goes to hell, gets a demon to let her out, talk to Kinley, then they pull her out. But it was still based on almost a dozen random events that need to go their way. The potion needs to actually send her to hell. If she's wrong it can't do that, they're back to square one. If the demons don't listen to her then she'll be trapped in hell. And if Kinley doesn't know anything, then it was all for naught. Not to mention if she can't get back then this will all be very difficult to explain.
And so, plan this-will-likely-end-badly was underway.
The potion tasted like an orange-flavored alcohol. Once she was done, Chloe laid back as Maze attached the pads.
"Maze…" Chloe said as she folded her hands over her stomach. "If something goes wrong and I don't make it back, can you help watch over Trixie?"
"It's your spawn, Decker," Maze said. "It's not my problem. You'll just have to come back and take care of her yourself."
"You ready?" Linda asked.
"No," Chloe said truthfully. She was killing herself, literally. Then she was going to hell. How could she be ready for that? She wasn't just saving Lucifer. She was making up for what she did a year ago. "Just do it."
Linda held her hand over the button. But she couldn't do it. Chloe had squeezed her eye shut in fear ready for the pain of electricity surging through her body followed by whatever else happens before her souls makes the journey. But she opened them when she realized nothing had happened yet.
"Oh, for god's sake," Chloe said. She put her hand over the button, squeezed her eyes shut and pushed. She waited for the pain, for something. But nothing happened. She pressed the button again, or at least she tied. But instead of the plastic button her finger made contact with a wood stand.
She opened her eyes, not sure what happened. The penthouse was empty. Did it not work?
And who was playing piano?
She got up and looked toward the grand piano. There Lucifer sat, playing what sounded like Fur Elise.
"Detective," Lucifer greeted upon seeing her. "You're awake. I thought we share a meal while the night is young." Lucifer gestured to a table he set on the balcony. White tablecloth had been pulled over it with two candles and red wine already poured.
Alright, Lucifer was dying on a bed which meant it did work so this was either a hell chamber where she'll be punished for what she did, or heaven was providing her with some sort of illusion of what she wanted.
She never thought she'd hope this wasn't heaven. She didn't deserve heaven anyways, not for the things she's done.
The past several hours felt like a dream. Or more like her entire life felt like a dream. Like she had been asleep and dreaming this entire time and this here was the actual real world. That this was real and that her life while alive was just fake. It wasn't that her life or rather her memory of life had become foggy. Quite the contrary, it never seemed more real. But this room, this place, it just seemed even more real than life. Everything seemed enhanced. Every color was more vibrant. Every sound was even more crisp. The fear she felt in her chest was still the same fear as before but for some reason it felt a million times worse, like sunlight through a magnifying glass. Was that some product of the afterlife? Was it exclusive to hell or did heaven have this too?
"Hello?!" Chloe called out. "If there are any demons here, please listen to me! Lucifer is in trouble. Your king needs your help! I need to speak to Father Kinley!"
"Kinley?" Lucifer repeated as he walked over to here, carrying the two glasses of wine he poured. "You still speaking to him?" he asked incredulously. "Conjuring up more ways to send me back to hell?"
She could hear the hurt in Lucifer's voice. Of course, he was hurt. She betrayed him, plotted to send him back to the one place he wanted to escape from. After everything he did for her, after being nothing but honest to her, she still betrayed him.
"No, no, no…" Chloe stuttered. "I need him to save you."
"Save me from you?" Lucifer asked. "From what you're doing?"
"Doing?" Chloe repeated. Present tense? She looked down and her hands began trembling. Between her fingers was the vial Kinley had given her. But that was only because she used it to get herself down to hell, right?
She looked up to see Lucifer take a sip of wine.
"Wait!" Chloe screamed.
Too late.
Lucifer stumbled back, the wine glasses slipping from his hand. Chloe rushed over to stop him from falling backwards but she could only ease him to the ground. And in moments, Chloe could feel the life leave Lucifer's body, him staring up at her in pain. But not pain of poison. Pain of betrayal.
"No, what's happening?" Chloe asked in a panic. This wasn't how it played out. It wasn't a poison and she most certainly didn't give it to him. Why was it happening?
"You're finishing what you started," a calm voice answered. Chloe looked up to see Father Kinley exit the elevator and step into the penthouse.
"Kinley," Chloe breathed venomously. "That elixir you gave me, where did you get it?"
"You mean the elixir you just gave the man you loved?" Kinley asked smugly.
Chloe looked down, realizing Lucifer was no longer there. Instead, in her hands was the vial. And behind her, Lucifer was taking a sip of wine.
She ran over, hoping to stop him, to save him. But he once again keeled over just as she reached him. He gave her one final pained glance, the realization that their past history has been a giant lie, before she felt his life leave him.
"Well done, my child," Kinley said.
"No, you're not putting this one me," she snapped. "You tricked me! You made me try to send Lucifer back to hell." But even as she said this, she knew it was a lie.
"Made you?" Kinley repeated. "You're the one who agreed to the plan. You're the one who arranged a date with Lucifer, when he was at his most vulnerable. You took advantage of his honesty and trust. You chose to betray him, to give him the elixir."
As he listed off her crimes, she could only agree. She did all of those things.
"No, I didn't," Chloe said but she didn't believe what her mouth was saying. "I didn't go through with it." Kinley didn't even bother answering, merely raising his eyebrows as if to ask, 'you sure?'.
Chloe looked down at her hands and gasped. She was holding the empty vial. Where was Lucifer?
"Detective?" Lucifer asked, walking up from behind Kinley. "Detective, what's wrong? Who is this?" Chloe tried to utter a response but found her voice stuck in her throat. What could she say? Whether it be lying or admitting her actions, she knew she was going to break his heart. But perhaps that was what she should do if for no other reason than for her own heartbreak to sink in. "I've poured you some wine if you would like some."
It was already too late. The wine glass he held was already partially empty. Chloe scrambled to his side as he clutched his stomach and fell to his knees.
Seeing this happen again for a third time was beginning to take its toll. The heartbreak of seeing him die three times in a row, seeing the look of betrayal and heartbreak on his face was excruciating enough. But there was something else about this damned place that made it feel a million times worse. She could feel tears in her eyes as she witnessed the fruits of her labor, the aftermath of her betrayal. The pain she felt in her heart was excruciating, worse than any stab or gunshot. But she knew she deserved it. She deserved this hurt.
'If you think that I wouldn't forgive you for your mistakes or your flaws, if you think I don't know who you really are by now, you're wrong.'
What a liar she had been. She wondered if Lucifer kept those words in his head, remembered what she said before she rejected him for his mistakes and flaws, for not knowing who he was.
"Mom?" another voice asked. She looked behind her to see Trixie standing at the elevator, a look of disappointment on her face. Her own child was disappointed in her. She was supposed to help, protect, and teach Trixie. Instead, she has proven herself unreliable, unfit to be a friend, lover, or even a parent. "Why did you do it mom?"
"Baby, I'm sorry…" Chloe choked out. "I made a mistake. I…" No matter what she pleaded, she could tell Trixie didn't believe her. She didn't even believe herself. Because it wasn't a mistake. She was a treacherous bitch and she deserved ever second of pain she felt. How could Trixie ever look up to her if this is what she does with the trust of a loved one?
She looked up at Kinley.
"Make it stop," she pleaded. "Please."
"I'm afraid it's not up to me," Kinley said, walking over to the couch and sitting down. "You did this, Chloe. You brought this all upon yourself. And now you are constructing the punishment you know you deserve."
Chloe looked at her hands again. She was holding the vial, but this time it was full. And in her other hand was a glass of wine. She couldn't stop herself. Before she knew what she was doing, she had emptied the vial into the glass. Lucifer approached her and took the glass, completely oblivious to Chloe's shellshock.
"To our future together, Detective," Lucifer said, cheering before drinking his wine. It was only after he lowered his glass did he look up and see her expression. "Detective, what's wrong?" Suddenly, he began choking, clutching his throat.
"Deny it all you wish," Kinley said. "It does not change the truth, that you know deep inside your heart you belong here in hell."
-.-
"Clear!" Linda announced, pressing the button again. But still nothing.
Maze looked on, not sure what to do. Was there even anything to do?
Linda looked back at the two of them. It had been five minutes and still nothing. They all just stared at each other. They had expended their last option. Hell, they made things worse. Chloe was dead and Lucifer was dying.
There was a whoosh and Amenadiel appeared in the room, his brown wings furling into his back.
"Any luck?" Maze asked. "Can you break down the gates of hell?"
"Not fast enough," Amenadiel said. "Not before Lucifer dies or Chloe's body can't hold her soul." He looked at Chloe's lifeless form before looking over at Lucifer.
"It might be too late for the last part," Linda said. "It's already been five minutes." Amenadiel's jaw dropped at this statement. He had been away for a day. Time moving differently in the celestial planes meant it was hard to keep track of the Earthly equivalent. He didn't realize he had been away for so long.
Linda and Amenadiel held each other, knowing they just lost a friend.
Maze reached over and closed Chloe's eyes.
-.-
A/N: Hello bad guys. Thank you for all the support on this. So, I always wondered what it would be like if Chloe went to hell, what sort of punishment she would get. Frankly I'm surprised this isn't a more common fanfic plot, what if this character went to hell, what punishment would get suffer? Granted, I guess not everyone enjoyed watching their favorite characters be tortured. Another thing was Kinley's vial. I've read other fanfics where Chloe goes through with the plan. And it seems a lot of people believe the vial to be a poison. But if it's poison, why did the demons need to use it on Charlie in the S4 finale? Same deal if it was a sedative. So this is my take on what it is. More details on it are in the next chapter. And Trixie is making progress into her own investigation. Anyways, I hoped you enjoyed and let me know what you think.
