We are Robin
Chapter 15: Who is the Man Behind it All?
The aircraft was quiet, except for the frequent beeping and clicking noise.
None of the team members of the spacecraft like what they were going to do. Nevertheless, it was their responsibility as heroes to save as many lives as possible. Besides, Raven wasn't going to let someone else die when she was the real target.
"We're almost there." Cyborg announced, slowing down the airplane. "Are you ready, C?"
"I was born ready." He replied, unbuckling his seat belt. He stood up and walked to the back of the aircraft. As he passed by Raven, he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, which she squeezed.
They both smiled at each other before he moved on.
"Be careful out there." Cyborg said as he pushed the button to release the hanger. Strong, cold wind entered the plane as a green eagle flew out.
Cyborg pushed the button again to close the hanger. They had to wait for Changeling to come back with his scouting report.
Minutes passed before Starfire turned around in her seat and looked back at Raven, who was behind her. "Are you sure that you want to do this? I know that we can think of another way to save her."
When Raven had informed them about one of her latest dreams, they were already on edge. Their location has been compromised for a second time. And although no one said it, they all thought it: someone on the team could be a traitor.
"No, this is the best way. Besides, every second count." Raven said before closing her eyes. She needed to meditate before she left the plane.
Starfire sighed, turning back in her seat. As she turned around, she exchanged worried glances with Nightwing, who shifted his eyes to Raven.
Damian felt frustrated with this plan. There were too many variables and not enough controls, not enough barriers to protect Raven. Anything could happen to her.
He clenched his teeth and looked ahead. He didn't have a warm, fuzzy feeling about this mission. Something bad was going to happen. He just knew it.
"It's going to be alright" Damian turned his head to Raven, who still had her eyes closed. "We will be home before dinner," she said.
"If you say so."
"Your optimism is reassuring."
Feeling bad and knowing how Raven must feel, he said. "You are right. We will be home before dinner time.".
"Now, you are lying," she teased
"I-"
The sound of the hanger opening and gushing wind caused him to stop taking and Raven to open her eyes. They all watched as Changeling entered and turned into his human form.
"What is the situation?"
Changeling shook his head. "I don't know. I couldn't get close."
"Useless," Damian whispered loudly.
Changeling faced him and snapped. "If you think that you can do a better job, how about you go jump out of the plane, and check."
"Sure, I will be happy to show you how to do something properly for once."
"Boys," Starfire interjected. "We are about to go on a mission. I don't think that this is a good time to fight."
"Starfire is right. Have you two forgotten about the teams that went before us?" Cyborg asked. "They fail due to a simple divide and conquer method. Let's not make this easier for them, Think about why we are here. Who we are here for."
They all turned to Raven who was sitting quietly as she watched them.
"Sorry," Changeling and Damian spoke together. She nodded.
Changeling coughed, grabbing everyone's attention. He began to speak. "There is some type of barrier protecting the area. Every time I go through it, I go back to where I started."
"He is trying to manipulate our movement," Raven responded. "He wants us to follow his directions with the hope of getting me alone."
"That's not going to happen," Damian said.
"I actually agree with this maniac." Changeling pointed his thumb toward Damian. "You are not going to be alone with that stalker, Blood or Chang as long as we are around."
Raven was quiet for a second before saying, "I think that it is best if we go with plan B." Raven said.
"That is the same as you being left alone with them. I'm against it. " Damian commented.
"Friend Nightwing, we had all agreed to the plan if Raven decided that it was best before we left the hideout. Plan B is what she thinks is best now. It is what we will do," Starfire added.
"Well, you all can sit here and pretend that one of us is not the traitor but I'm not. How was Brother Blood and Professor Chang able to follow our move? There is a mole on our team. How do we know who we can trust?"
Cyborg sighed and rubbed his temples. Didn't we just have this conversation a second ago?
Irritated as Cyborg, Changeling yelled, "Dude, you are the least trusted person on the team. We don't know anything about you?"
"You think that I will hurt Raven?"
"Well, you think that we will. We are her friends, not you."
"I'm-"
"Stop!" Raven shouted. "This is pointless. We are going with Plan B as we had discussed early."
"I-"
Raven locked eyes with Damian. "I think that it is best that you back off. Everyone needs to be a team player for this mission and you are not even trying to. The more we argue, the more time she is down there with them." Her voice dropped to a soft whisper. "I don't want anyone to suffer a second longer as I did."
Damian clenched his teeth and balled up his fists. He leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he was in his room. He quickly swung his legs over the bed. He walked out of his room into the game room.
The other Robins immediately dropped their cue sticks and raced toward Damian. "What happened?" They demanded.
Damian's eyes shifted. Heat suffused his cheek. "She told me to switch with you."
"Me?" Jason pointed his finger at himself.
"No, not you idiot" he shouted, angry with himself. He had let Raven down. "She wants the original."
Dick and Jason looked at each other, both of them wanted to gloat but they were on a mission; this wasn't the time or place. So, Dick quickly rushed to leave the mind of the Robins.
When he woke up, he jumped back in his seat. Starfire was leaning dangerously close to him.
"You are up." She said as his eyes shifted around the plane. Something seemed off about him.
"I wasn't sleeping. ...I was meditating."
A frown appeared on her face. "Don't you think that this is a weird time to meditate?"
"Ummm, I needed to get my head in the game." He answered weakly.
It's official. Nightwing had become a radioactive zombie. She nodded mentally. "Oh..oh, okay," she said out loud.
"If you are finished meditating, we need to move," Cyborg said.
Dick unbelted his seat belt and stood up. He turned to the back of the plane to see Cyborg, Changeling, and Raven waiting. His eyes met with Raven. He gave her a small encouraging smile which she nodded to acknowledge his presence.
"Sorry," he said, moving his gaze back to Cyborg. "Let's go."
Fifteen minutes later, they were walking to the spot that they were directed to. The spot was near another Amish community so they had left the plane farther back as they were also instructed to do.
"I don't see anyone," Starfire said as they got closer to the spot. Her eyes searched the area from above. "Do you think that they are watching us from somewhere else?"
"Most likely. However, my scanners are not picking up anything." Cyborg answered a few feet in front of the others. "Stay alert."
They walked three more minutes when they arrived at an empty field. They walked into the middle of the field and looked around. There was no one there.
"Are you sure this is the right place?" Nightwing asked.
"This is the right spot." Raven answered. "The directions were very clear." She had another dream, which had given her the directions to come here.
" I don't see anything but field and trees," Starfire said, landing next to her friends.
"Guys," said Nightwing, "I think that we already walked into a-" His words were cut off by their screams as the ground under them disappeared, and they fell down.
Starfire and Raven were the first to recover since they were used to moving in the air. They halted their fall. Starfire quickly grabbed Cyborg and Robin who were next to her, stopping them from falling.
They started to move out of the pit. However, the exit suddenly closed as it had opened. They were bathed in darkness.
Cyborg released the flashlight system in his body, causing light to shine. He, Starfire, and Nightwing looked around the small area.
Raven was gone.
"Raven!" They yelled. She didn't reply. "Raven!"
Frustrated, Starfire rushed toward the open and slammed her back against it. Instead of breaking, it released several watts of electricity. The current ran from the opening through Starfire to Nightwing and Cyborg.
They all screamed again before falling to the ground below unconscious.
"Well, gentlemen. I held up my end of our deal and brought Raven to you." The man known as Jack Brown said as they watched the events unfold from the monitor.
"Yes, you did." Professor Chang replied, rubbing his beard thoughtfully. Usually, when villains had a plan for a superhero, they had to do something dramatic to get their attention or go to them directly and kidnap them to bring them back to their lair.
This was the first time that he saw heros follow their plans with little advertisement on their part. Granted, a cemetery of dead bodies was big enough to grab several heroes' and heroines' attention. Nevertheless, this was the first time he was able to strictly focus on his plan.
"You must tell us your secret of how you convinced Raven to come." Brother Blood said, observing the man beside Chelsea. He smiled inward, knowing who Professor Chang and he were going to deal with next.
The man smiled also but outward instead. "I will have to tell you all someday. But right now, I have other matters to attend to. Chelsea will further assist you both until I am able to join you later.
He turned to Chelsea who nodded with her eyes. His smile widened.
"Well," Blood said, grabbing his attention. "Don't let us hold you up."
"Thanks, but sometimes, I feel like I am the one who is holding you up."
Raven stood up and looked around. She was in an empty hallway. When the opening to the pit had closed, she had felt magic grabbed her and transported her to another location.
"Changeling, are you still there?"
She felt something on her shoulder before a green spider appeared from her collar. She smiled at it.
Plan B wasn't a plan at all. It was a simple strategy: Changeling was to remain with Raven at all times. It was to ensure that she wouldn't be left vulnerable.
No one really liked the plan; however, she had a feeling that the person who was contacting her had more control over this situation than they did. And while she didn't want to walk into a trap as they had just done, she couldn't find a way to avoid it.
She took a deep breath in, trying to calm her nerves, and twisted her head behind them. It was a dead end. She twisted her head in the opposite direction before looking at Changeling, who rested on her shoulder.
"It looks like only one way to go."
As she began to walk, Changeling clung to her. Maybe we should have waited to come up with another plan. He thought.
This mission was already starting on the wrong foot. Luckily, he had been able to stick by her side thus far.
He was happy that he was one that he was able to carry out this plan. Because whether he liked Nightwing or not, his words held some truth. It was likely that there was a traitor on the team. However, Changeling knew that he wasn't the traitor. He also knew that he would give up his life to protect Raven.
He-
The hallway in front of him disappeared and he felt himself falling. He quickly shifted into a bird and shriek. He turned his head to the right and to the left, yet all he saw was blackness. He flew up until he hit his head. The electrical current moved through his body and he fell onto the bottom of the pit with the other Titans.
Raven stopped as she felt magic around her. Her hands glowed black as she searched the empty hallway. She stood still for a minute, yet nothing happened.
She looked toward her shoulder and panicked.
Changeling was gone.
She spun around, searching for him. As she spun around, a glisten caught her eyes. She walked towards it, going in the direction she came from.
She stopped in front of the glisten and held out her hand towards it before putting it down. She sighed with a frown.
Changeling was gone.
She turned around to continue her journey alone, praying that Changeling and the others were safe.
As she walked down the hallway, a sickening feeling came over Raven. Her body started to shiver, and she felt bile rising from her stomach. She swallowed and forced herself to move forward.
She didn't want to be here. She wanted to return to the others. She wanted to go home. She wanted to run away. Focus. Focus. Focus and calm yourself.
She took three deep breaths and continued to move along the hallway.
She also wants to go home. She thought. Remember that you are here to save her. The more focused you are, the quicker you can save her and the faster you can go home.
She swallowed and turned left in the direction in which the hallway was moving. Her eyes darted in all directions. She was watching out for anything that would come out.
She turned right at the end of the hallway.
She froze.
Memories rushed back. She remembered fainting in the alleyway and waking up on the cold table chained. The sounds of her past screams flew in her ears, and she felt multiple hands and needles against her skin.
Her body shook as images of her time as a prisoner became vivid. During the day she was a drugged doll that was worshiped by foolish, weak-minded people. At night, she was a test tube that was pumped with several drugs well being broken.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
Raven's eyes widened. She quickly flew up until she reached the ceiling. She turned around to see a man standing where she was.
"Don't be afraid. You are in good hands here."
"Who are you?" She squinted her eyes. He sounded like Brother Blood, but he didn't resemble him. He was younger with green eyes and red hair.
"A devoted friend." He stuck out his hand towards her with a smile. "Now, come down. We have a lot of work to do to make you perfect."
She looked around the room. It was bright with three of the four walls covered in light blue paints with white, ancient writings on them. The odd wall was most likely a two-way mirror, where Brother Blood and Professor Chang were mostly hiding.
However, what made her freeze was the altar-like table that was centered in the middle of the room. It was decorated with flowers and silk at the base while the top held shackles that she knew would hold her.
It was similar to a table that she had spent days screaming on.
"You are crazy if you think that I would go with you." She finally said, glaring at the man.
He put his hand down with a frown. "I was afraid that you would say that."
He started to chant and the words on the wall began to move.
"No!" She tried to fly to him as she felt her power starting to leave her. "It will kill you."
The determined look on his face froze her heart right before the room was filled with bright light and everything around her went black.
….
The sounds of hurrying feet and screams woke Raven up. She tried to look around; however, her eyes were covered. She moved her hands to move the covering from her eyes, only to be met with resistances on her wrists. She pulled against them but their hold remained firm. She tried again. Then again.
She started to panic.
The noise and the screams got louder and closer, making Raven fight against her restraints some more. She twisted her body this way and that way, hoping to create enough force to break her chains.
While she was pulling against the restraints, the noises suddenly stopped. She paused for a moment before frantically struggling. Tears ran down her cheeks from under the mask.
She didn't try to control her emotions as she prayed that her unchecked emotions would cause something to combust so that she could escape. Yet, her powers remained sealed. And she remained trapped as she heard soft footsteps walking toward her.
A hand touched the side of her face causing her to flinch.
"Relax, no one is going to hurt you."
Raven's heart pumped faster and her head throbbed as she heard the male voice. The voice was familiar to her; however, she couldn't place it while under emotional distress.
However, she didn't have to try and figure out to whom the voice belonged as the blindfold was removed from her face. She blinked rapidly to adjust her eyes to the light.
When they were adjusted, she was staring at the face of her friend.
"Why?" She wasn't sure if she was hallucinating or not. She blinked. Yet, the young man in front of her didn't change. She still saw a smiling face with blue eyes and jet black hair. It was the face of her old friend as well as the friend whom she was staying with when the attacks started.
"Why are you here?" She asked confused as he undid her restraints.
"Catching a little birdie," he said. When he saw the look of betrayal and fear in her eyes, he added, "Not, you but him." He turned his body sideways so that she could see an unconscious Nightwing being dragged in by two guys. They stopped beside the red-haired woman called Chelsea, who watched Tim and Raven with curiosity.
"Nightwing!" Raven said, trying to get off the table. She was halted by Tim's hands.
"I'm sorry but you can't help him."
Raven faced him. "Let him go." She said through clenched teeth. It's me that you want."
He shook his head sadly, knowing that she wouldn't like the words that were going to come out of his mouth. "You were never the goal, Raven. At least not for me. This was all about Nightwing."
Confused, she asked, "What do you want with Nightwing?"
"I want my body back. I want my whole body."
Raven's eyes widened at his words as they quickly registered inside of her head. "You are the other Robin."
He smiled. " Yes, I am Timothy Jackson Drake, the third Robin. And soon the only Robin."
