Angela was already waiting in Adam's office when he arrived. "Am I late?"

"No, I'm early. Couldn't sleep."

He dropped his laptop on the desk and raised one eyebrow. He had been amused at how enthusiastic Jay and Angela were yesterday, they seemed to enjoy playing their roles, perhaps a little too much. "Really?"

Angela had talked to Kim about getting to know Jay after the dinner they had to build their backstory and get to know each other so they didn't look like they'd just met. The way Angela had talked about Jay it was way more than just 'work', she enjoyed getting to know Jay and talked about how much he made her laugh, which didn't sound much like the Jay they knew lately. He was bordering on miserable most of the time and Adam had told her that he tended to avoid hanging out with him too much because he just bought the mood of the room down. It was like he had the life sucked out of him.

"Steady on." She laughed. "So, what do you think?"

He held up his hand. "Coffee first." Adam didn't even give her time to answer as he headed for the small kitchen. He'd already had one at home before he left but he wasn't breaking routine. The first thing he did when he arrived at work, if he didn't have a cup of coffee already in his hand was make one. He was a habitual coffee drinker but only up until about 2pm then he'd stop, unless they were on a late stakeout and needed to stay awake. "Kim will be in soon. I think she was checking the videos from yesterday, we uploaded them last night."

"Okay."

Making them both a coffee they carried them back into his office and closed the door. "Drew and Harry are planning a trip, next weekend. A boy's weekend apparently. I'm not sure where they are going as they seemed a little cagey about it but I just got a vibe." Adam threw his feet up on his desk.

He was coming out of the back door and bumped smack bang into them and they both looked a little stunned and looked at each other quickly and he'd got the distinct impression that he had interrupted something. Because they seemed unsure of what he'd heard they casually mentioned a boy's weekend and then changed the subject to his shiny new BBQ and how it was never going to be the same now he'd used it.

"Already found someone to come and clean it." He laughed and moved off. It was a strange exchange and clear that they didn't want him to know what they were up too. He hadn't made a big deal of it or even mentioned the boy's weekend or asked about it but he was hoping that the video cameras picked it up.

"We'll check it out once the video comes through. Apart from that it seemed to go pretty smoothly. You two play the married couple well."

"We were born to play this role?"

"Are you sleeping with Kim?" Adam was a little blindsided by the question and the directness of it, he thought it was pretty obvious but the tone of Angela's voice was a little off putting. He always got the vibe that everyone knew and was comfortable with how they were interacting and doing what they had to do, it was part of the job.

"Kim and I are doing our job." He tilted his head. "Mitch and Erin are doing everything a young married couple would do."

She tapped the side of her coffee mug with a long painted fingernail. Kim had told him about the whole Mani-Pedi date they were organising. "Not what I asked." She quipped. "I just don't want any surprises."

"No surprises. You wanted a couple that could pull off the happily married scenario, that's what you've got." Adam knew precisely what she meant and he was a little annoyed with the line of questioning, this was what they wanted and he told Angela as much but at the end of the day this was her case and she had every right to make sure it was done right. "Kim and I are a hundred percent committed to seeing this through. We've put everything into it, put our lives on hold, we are ignoring our families, our friends, everything that makes us who we are. I guarantee you right now you won't regret it."

"I think the thing that makes you who you are is the one thing you still have. Each other. It's obvious Adam."

"Great, fine." He dismissed her, still bristling a little. They were trying so hard to hold Adam and Kim at bay but it was getting harder to ignore, especially after their moment last night. Neither of them talked about it and having Angela pick away at him wasn't helping. "Do you want to talk about you and Jay?"

"Hardly relevant is it?" He could see that he hit on a nerve.

Adam just raised one eyebrow and left it at that but he'd made his point. It was time to change the subject. "So? What's your take on yesterday? Mitch and Erin aside." He didn't want this to come up when Kim was here, if she felt that people were questioning how they were doing she'd pull back. A lack of self confidence in herself had always bubbled away under the surface and it didn't take much for it to rise up again, he'd seen it more than once.

"Interesting bunch, I mean Drew and Harry were as thick as thieves but Lizzie and Harry's wife, Kate barely acknowledged each other. That struck me as odd."

"Yeah, we noticed that too. Maybe something to delve into a little."

"There is something there." Adam agreed. "Maybe during your Mani-Pedi date you can get the goss from Lizzie?"

"Oh we will. Looking forward to that." Angela chuckled. It was something she loved doing, although not quite as out there as Sally was but they had decided that was part of her persona and they ramped it up a level or two. "And the rest of the neighbours?"

"Seemed to stick to themselves, like little factions. They seemed nice and normal though and I don't think Kim noticed anything either, nothing set her radar off if that means anything and she's pretty good at pegging people. If normal is the right word?" Adam was keen to talk to Kim about that a little more as well but she certainly hadn't indicated she was wary of anyone else. They had talked about it generally, as Mitch and Erin would after everyone had left but wanted to get deeper into it and wanted to look back at the surveillance videos to see if they were actually normal or just very good at going under the radar.

"I think not under suspicion is a better term."

"At the moment, yes. Let's review the tapes first."

The knock on the door interrupted them and Angela curiously watched Adam as Kim entered. Something had shifted with them, she was sure of it but as long as it kept this show on the road and so far they had been flawless Angela wasn't going to make a big deal of it. She just wanted them to know that she knew.

"How was your morning?"

"Uneventful. I reviewed all the footage from yesterday."

"Anything interesting we should look at?" Adam opened his laptop and set it up so they could watch it on the TV on the wall. Kim opened her laptop and bought up the notes she'd made of particular times she wanted them to view. At this stage they were just focussed on Drew and Harry. They would worry about the other's later.

They had a few camera's around the house, luckily the previous owners had put up outside security cameras so it wasn't obvious that they had recently been installed. Mitch had commented to Drew just after they moved in about them. Drew had made passing comment that he would have to be careful how many beers he drunk in the front yard because the missus was probably watching on the security cameras.

Mitch had laughed. "Don't think so, not even sure they are connected. I'm pretty sure they are just for show. Were the previous neighbours a bit paranoid?"

"The wife was."

"Ez hates them, she wants to take them down, thinks they ugly up the outside." Mitch laughed. "And is worried about people hacking them. She saw that movie where someone hacked a baby monitor and used it to spy on the family and ended up kidnapping the baby." He continued, laughing along with Drew. "Like she woke me up to tell me that we were never having baby monitors, that our kids would sleep in our room until they were eighteen. She is a little be neurotic at times, usually at odd hours."

"They become totally different beast once you have kids."

"Yeah." He took a mouthful of his beer and forced himself to smile although it was a little awkward.

It was a long slow game they were playing.

"So…" Adam leant back in his seat after watching the key moments Kim had identified. "They are going to Texas." It was all stacking up neatly. Texas had the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the US. Poor girls who would happily have their problems taken away for a nice anonymous paycheck.

"Setting up new deals?" Angela pondered. "Maybe they've got a few in the rack."

"Perhaps."

Both Adam and Kim could sense that Angela was a bit excited. "Feel like a sudden Business trip?"

"Nope, too risky. Suddenly I'm going on a Business trip that I never mentioned yesterday to the exact same place my dodgy neighbours are going?" Adam shook his head. "No way that's not suss."

Angela considered Adam's opinion and could see the sense in it, she was just excited that they were making some progress. Kim agreed that it was way too risky and too aggressive and they both floated the idea of letting local LEO's keep an eye on them, perhaps organise them to be pulled over for a routine traffic stop and have the cops quiz them on what they are doing in town and for how long. It is not an unusual thing to happen. That plan had a lot more merit at this stage.

Kim thought the weekend would be a good opportunity to try and organise catching up with Lizzie and suggested that Erin could invite her to a High Tea.

Kim knew about these regular fundraisers for a pregnancy loss support group a while ago and it was something she was interested in regardless. She hadn't mustered the courage to attend one yet and was hoping that going under the veil of being someone else might help her overcome her own trepidation and fears. She had talked to Adam about it once before this job came up and he encouraged her to go but she hadn't made a move yet. Now she could feel him looking at her and it did worry her what he was thinking.

Angela did like how meticulous both of them were and that Kim had not only put a lot of thought of into this she was also willing to do whatever it takes. She got the sense though at times Adam worried that she was going too far.

Adam furrowed his brow. "I'm not sure?"

"Yes, it's perfect. The perfect chance to bring it up. I can't just blurt it out." Kim responded coolly. "This will totally make sense."

Angela agreed but Adam was a little more suspect. "And then what? I think there is a better way."

"Such as?"

"The Mani-pedi date. Use that instead. Perhaps Sally can drop that it's probably what you needed after the last few months. You can subtly drop that in. I just think if you jump in to something like a full on fundraiser for something so obvious as a Pregnancy Loss Group it's trying too hard. It would be like me going on this Business trip." Adam was really desperate for Kim not to go down that path just yet. "You can still go to the fundraiser, but go as Kim."

She shot him a cold look and he apologised but he still thought it was too soon to go too hard and fortunately Angela could see where he was coming from.

Angela's phone beeped with a message and she looked down at it and smiled. It was perfect timing because it broke the tension.

Kim caught the smile though and both her and Adam looked at each other when Angela told them that Jay was on his way in. They had both noticed the sparks flying yesterday. It felt like a lot more than roleplaying, somethings you just couldn't fake. Pretty much like they had been unable to fake anything that was going on between them.

Kim shook her head when Adam appeared to be about to say something. He wouldn't be able to help himself and would probably make such a big deal of it that both of them would shrink away. They both wanted Jay to be happy and wanted the fun-loving guy they used to know to return.

As soon as Jay arrived Adam started laughing. "What?" he held his hands up to query what was so funny.

"Nothin'." Kim's withering stare did little to help the situation. She grabbed the bag of sandwiches that Jay had bought and took them through to the kitchen and beckoned Adam to come help.

"Am I about to get some lecture?" He followed her reluctantly.

"Yes."

Now it was Jay's turn to laugh.

Kim dumped the bag on the bench as Adam closed the door behind them, he was smart enough to know that was required. "Okay you need to rein it in." Kim started. "One, on Jay and Angela otherwise you know what will happen, he'll run for the hills. He's more useless than you."

"Gee thanks."

"And two, what's your issue with me going to this fundraiser? I thought you wanted me to go." He watched Kim reefed the food from the bag and dump them on a couple of plates. Reading the labels she handed him one of the plates. Roast Beef, pickles, cheese and lettuce, his favourite. She didn't even need to ask.

"I want Kim to go, not Erin."

"Wow." Kim turned her back on him and he saw the shoulder slump.

Putting the plate on the table he rested both hands on her shoulders. "Kim, Darlin'. Look at me." When she didn't turn around he let go and actually stepped in between Kim and the bench, forcing her to take a step back and he saw the faint glisten of tears. "If this is getting too much I want you to let me know."

"It's not."

"Okay." He knew better than to argue. "I'm still here."

"I know."

Adam nodded and leant forward, kissing her forehead softly. It was just for a moment until Kim stepped back and picked up her sandwich and bought it over to the small table.

"So you think Lizzie will go for the Mani-Pedi?" Adam took a bite of his sandwich.

"Yeah. I think so, I hope so anyway." Kim looked at her sandwich and struggled to muster the will to even take a bite. "What are you going to do?"

"Cook you dinner, spy on the neighbours, you know all the usual things one does on a weekend."

Kim finally picked up her sandwich. "You love this don't you?"

"I love working with you, I love living with you, there is a lot to love about this if we take out the part that we are trying to crack an illegal adoption and surrogacy ring. Then yes, I love this."

Kim didn't get the chance to respond, the door flung open and Jay and Angela demanded to know where their lunch was. They looked very chummy with each other and Kim kicked Adam 'accidently' when he opened his mouth to speak.

"Sorry." She grinned sheepishly as Adam rubbed him shin.

Both of them had a bit of work to get through and Kim wanted to get home by the early afternoon. She did like to mix up her arrival and departure times because obviously working from home and going out to client meetings was very random.

Adam left the same time, or close enough every day and arrived home at a consistent hour. They were just your typical working couple. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing that set off alarm bells and also nothing that was regimented. They did their best to appear completely normal and unaffected by life.
