A/N: This was the original drabble for Fish, then it was going to become its own story, and now it's here.
Fancy
Hermione couldn't remember the last time she had a home-cooked meal. Lately, she had been ordering delivery, and it was starting to take a toll on her bank account. With working late nights, she just didn't have the energy to cook anything. Why did delivery have to be so convenient?
She shook her head to rid herself of thoughts of all the delivery she was probably going to order the following week and checked the time on her phone. Luckily, tonight she would be having dinner at Harry and Ginny's place, but she only had 10 minutes before she had to be on her way to their house.
Hermione looked at her reflection in the bathroom mirror and tried to think of ways to improve her appearance. Maybe some mascara or a hint of blush would help? She felt ridiculous for how much she wanted to impress him. It had been months since they last saw each other, and she wanted to look good for their reunion. Tonight, a small number of her old college friends were meeting at Harry and Ginny's, and despite being excited to see all of them, there was only one man who man her feel both nervous and excited: Sirius Black.
Just thinking his name made her cheeks warm up. She already knew she would need to drink a lot of alcohol to make it through the evening.
After another five minutes of staring in the mirror and making no progress with her makeup, Hermione decided she would at least wet her hair and run a brush through it to make her curls pop a bit. She looked through the small jewelry box on the bathroom counter and pulled out a pair of sparkling diamond earrings. They were a gift from her mother years ago, and she always felt her best when she wore them. Hermione gave herself one last look in the mirror before rushing to her room, grabbing her purse, and heading out the front door.
By the time she arrived at the Potter's house, almost everyone was there.
"Hermione!" Ginny said, approaching her with open arms, "I'm so glad you're here."
Hermione returned the hug and let Ginny usher her into the living room. It seemed that Harry, Remus, Tonks, and Peter were in the middle of an intense game of Poker. Not wanting to disturb them, she went into the kitchen and took advantage of the drinks laid out on the counter.
"He's not even here, and you're already drinking?"
Hermione could hear the amusement in her friend's voice and chose to ignore her.
As she took another sip of her drink, she could see the person who was most anxious to see come in through the front door. She finished off her drink as she watched him make his rounds, greeting everyone.
Before she had a chance to look away, he looked up, and for a brief moment, their eyes connected. Sirius gave her an amused smile as he made his way towards her.
He walked up behind her, pouring himself a glass of something to drink. Hermione could feel his presence behind her and mentally blamed the alcohol for the heat she felt rising through her body.
Hermione turned around to face him. All she wanted to do was say "hello" and move back into the living room. Standing here for much longer so close to him was too much for her to handle. She felt a blush immediately form on her cheeks and hoped he didn't notice. Maybe she shouldn't have had all that alcohol.
She knew the words she wanted to say, but they weren't coming out. It was as if he was waiting for her to make the first move. Nervously, she ran her fingers through her hair and ended up tucking some of it behind her ear. Sirius's eyes were immediately drawn to the sparkling diamond studs she had put on earlier.
He brought his face just past hers and whispered in her ear, "don't you look fancy?"
