Chapter 14: Blake
Blake let out a sigh as he emerged from the Gate of Judgement. The challenge that the spirits of judgement had given him had been the most mentally draining yet, and he knew that his next one would be even more difficult than that. In his next one, he'd have to travel into the World Domain, and he wasn't sure what that would entail.
"Welcome back, Ryan," a comforting voice greeted.
"Good to be back, Integra," Blake chuckled tiredly.
She always waited outside the gate for him. She'd most likely want a debrief from him before his visit to the World room. She enjoyed hearing about his trials.
"My goodness," Integra laughed. "You look exhausted. You should get some rest."
That was odd. No debrief? No questions? Just get some rest. Maybe she'd ask tomorrow during training. She did prioritize him getting rest over anything, these days.
Blake sighed and waved her off. "I will once I visit the World room. After that, I will gladly take myself to sleep."
"You know that place isn't going anywhere, right?" Integra sighed. "Your rest should come first."
Blake gave Integra a suspicious look. She had never told him to sleep before going to the World room. Yes, she bagged him about resting, but she had never told him to rest before his visits. She always seemed to have an understanding that his visits helped keep him motivated. Something was going on.
"I'm fine, Master," Blake sighed once more. Maybe it was him just being on high alert. It had to be nothing. "I promise I'll rest as soon as I see her."
At this, the diviness stepped in front of him. "I'm going to have to insist, Ryan."
Blake's suspicion shot through the roof. "Master, why are you stopping me from going, this time? You've never had an issue with it before."
Integra shifted uncomfortable. Her normally unreadable demeanor was blaring uncertainty. She couldn't seem to meet his eyes.
"Ryan," Integra murmured, sadness crossing her face. "There's something I must tell you before you go in there."
"What is it?" Blake asked, confusion surfacing. When she didn't continue right away he promoted her jokingly. "What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?" He gave a slightly delirious chuckle.
She paused for a moment as if debating on whether or not she should tell him the information she had. Finally she sighed and looked him in the eyes with sympathy.
His heart dropped into his stomach.
"Ryan," Integra continued. "Your mother was killed by an observer yesterday."
Blake's eyes went wide. "What?" Then he began to laugh nervously. "You're joking right?" She had to be. His voice was starting to crack. This couldn't be real. She couldn't be serious. "You're joking. You have to be. And if so, it's not funny."
His chest began to ache and his gut began to twist to the point of great discomfort. She had to be lying. She was messing with him. She had to be. His mother couldn't be dead. And by an Observer? They only went after anomalies. Not beings that were supposed to exist.
"Ryan-" Integra began.
"No!" Blake yelled. He felt as if his world was spinning. It couldn't be true. His mom couldn't be dead. "Stop joking! It's not funny! She's not dead! She can't be dead! I erased myself so that the people I loved wouldn't be harmed while I was away!" Blake's legs gave out and he fell to his knees. His began to burn as a disgusting warmth could be felt on his face. His vision began to blur as the tears streamed down his face and fell onto the stone tiles. "If she's dead then all of this was for nothing! Everything was for nothing!"
"Ryan..." Integra soothed as she reached for him.
Blake slapped her hand away and bolted through the door. "Just leave me alone!"
Rin and Ben stood at the end of the pier, staring off in horror as the giant creature approached. It was taller than her estate back home, and looked like the skeleton of a fallen angel. The thing carried a wicked looking spear and had glowing yellow eyes that seemed to pierce through their very souls. Boney wings spread from its back and it hovered closer to them.
"What the fuck is that?!" Ben yelled.
"I have no clue," Rin replied with wide eyes, unable to take her gaze off of the being. How had that thing even been able to fit into the Ryan household? It was massive. At least 15 meters tall.
"Rin Tohsaka," a deep raspy voice echoed in her head. "You have violated natural law by restoring that which should no longer exist. For your offense, you must be exterminated."
Rin's eyes went wide. This thing was here to kill her. "What are you talking about?" She echoed back. "What have I done wrong?"
It's eyes glowed brighter as it came even closer.
"You restored memories to Charlotte Ryan, the unbeknownst mother of Blake Ryan," the monster responded. "Those memories are no longer meant to exist, as Blake Ryan no longer exists. For this violation of Natural Law, you are sentenced to death. Please do not resist."
A red ball of energy began to charge at the end of the thing's spear, but all Rin could do was stare off. She was the reason Blake's mother had been killed. It was all her fault for dragging the poor woman into this. Maybe this is what she deserved.
The bone angel fired the beam and it shot with lightning speed towards Rin.
She deserved every bit of this. This would be her atonement for letting Charlotte down.
"Blood Art, Formation 3: Shield Form," Ben called out as he threw a vile of blood in front of Rin.
The blood inside the vile began to glow, shattering the glass casing. Instantly, a solid red shield formed in front of Rin, and blocked the beam.
"Damn it, Rin!" Ben yelled. "Get your head in the game! This is no time for sulking."
The observer looked to Ben and spoke in the occultist's head.
"Benjamin Conners," it echoed. "For assisting a violator of Natural Law, and violating Natural Law yourself, you are to be sentenced to the same punishment. Death."
"Well shit," Ben chuckled. "You should have said so sooner. Maybe I would have violated Natural Law before this."
Rin finally snapped herself out of her daze. She couldn't afford to think about Charlotte Ryan's death at the moment. This monster had killed her. Regardless of the outcome, that had never been Rin's intention. So instead of feeling guilty, she needed to figure out a way to defeat this thing.
"You insolent fool," the monster bellowed. "You only delay the inevitable!"
Rin took a breath and steadied herself. She had to think.
Mana seemed to be pulsing through that spear, almost as if the spear was supplying the monster with power. That wasn't all, though. The mana around the area seemed like it was fading, and the spears mana seemed like it was increasing. So she could only assume that the spear was absorbing mana and was providing it to the monster.
"You know, I've been thinking," Ben responded. "I don't really care about the inevitable. I only care about this moment. Right now."
"Ben, we have to focus on destroying his spear," Rin murmured to him. "I think it's the source of his power."
Ben nodded his understanding.
"You ready," She asked her companion. "We have to take this thing down."
She didn't know if they could and he didn't know they could, but he nodded once more.
"Let's do this," Ben replies.
They would have to try.
"Ready...go!" They both called as they ran towards the monster.
