Chapter 7: Starting Ignotus' Notes

"I had always felt so different from the other kids. Finding out I was a witch just made sense to me," Hermione says thoughtfully.

"Oh yes. I remember the day I discovered I had magic. It was life changing. A good explanation that I desperately needed," Lily adds on.

The dining room of Number 12, Grimmauld Place is packed. No one can resist Molly's cooking. Hermione arrived two days ago and immediately hit it off with Lily. Remus had gone out on his first mission to try and sway the Werewolves to the light. Since the last Order meeting, Tonks, Mad-Eye, Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, and Professor Dumbledore have been spending much of their time at Hogwarts to do some problem solving. Now, Hermione, Sirius, the Potters, and Weasleys are all conversing with each other over a nice meal. Harry is glad to have distractions from thoughts of the certain turbulent times to come.

***Flashback***

Harry and Ron hear a knock at the door. "Harry," James calm voice emanates from the door, "Can we come in?" Harry puts down his Quidditch mag and Ron finishes his last Chocolate Frog.

"Yeah, come on in," Harry responds. Ron takes the hint and makes to leave the room through the same door that James and Lily are entering.

"Hey, Prongslet," James says as he sits on the bed next to his son. Lily next to him.

"Hey… Look I'm sorry I ran out like that, it's just that… I don't want to just sit back while others are risking their necks. And if this turns into another war…"

"I know, Harry. I remember feeling the same way as I was coming out of Hogwarts," James responds, "I know you probably don't like hearing this, but you're a kid. It's not such a bad thing if you're not putting all of your energy into fighting dark wizards."

"You shouldn't have to worry about these kinds of things. That's what parents are for," Lily adds.

"I guess I understand," Harry says, unable to find an argument.

***Flashback ended***

"Alright, children, let's start cleaning this place up," Molly says to the teens. All the kids except Hemione groan in response, but they get up anyway.

"Would you like some help, Molly?" Lily asks graciously.

"Oh, no thank you, Lily dear. The kids need some things to do around here anyway," Molly responds with a smile.

Before they can leave the dining room, Sirius stands swiftly and points his index finger at them all. "Same rules as when you first got here: Do not, I repeat, DO NOT open any cupboards, drawers, chests, or closets until we get Dragon-hide gloves," he says crucially. Molly and the children nod affirmative and leave with uneasy expressions. Arthur murmurs something about a few statements needing to be written up and exits as well, leaving only Sirius, James, and Lily in the dining room. The first time James and Lily have been alone with Sirius since their return.

"It's good to see you're doing well, Sirius," Lily says, sadly.

"Well, I…" Sirius realizes what they must know. "I've been better. Doesn't really help being on house arrest, but you guys being here makes things a million times better," he says.

"Fudge is lucky he has his title protecting him," James says, his eyes far away from the conversation. James was starting to read the articles being printed. Between the insults aimed at his son and Dumbledore, and Sirius' wrongful imprisonment, James' contempt for Cornelius Fudge has only grown since his revival. The silence in the room grows uncomfortable.

"I still don't know how people can let this happen. All of us here knew Bagnold's faults, but I thought once we replaced her it would be someone with more competence. She sentenced you to a lifetime in Azkaban without a trial. And Fudge still refuses to give you one. Not only is that blatant tyranny, but it's also illegal. Not even the Minister is above Magic law." As far as Lily is concerned, she and Sirius are brother and sister in all but blood.

Although Sirius' hatred of Peter couldn't be higher, he has come to terms with the fact that Peter was a friend for a good portion of their lives, and it did hurt to lose him. Five years ago, he would've never been able to accept the fact that he was hurt by it, and that he's partly to blame. He was blinded by anger. The same way that Fudge is blinded by fear.

"I was able to transform to keep myself sane. It's in the past now," Sirius says, not inclined to talk about his experience just yet, even with his best friends. "You know what? I think we all need a break from thinking about this war," Sirius says, with a growing smirk, "And Prongs, those twins… They remind me a lot of us when we were their age."

"Oh, I noticed. What did you have in mind, Padfoot?" James says, with increasing intrigue. His mood changing rapidly.

Lily catches on quickly. "Oh, Merlin help us."

Six adults sit in Professor Snape's classroom all focused on pages that they removed from an old, dull journal. Dumbledore suggested that the best way to find an explanation for the Potter's return is to first recreate the foundations of the ritual that they performed. Snape comes across the first success that Peverell had.

Potion base attempt number 1,253:Amortentia (Love Potion)
Love will be stronger than the even the amount of hate it takes to kill. But love can't protect against death on its own. Many wizards would still be alive if that were true.
A potion cannot produce real love. But has anyone ever tried combining it with real love? I imagine it would amplify the protections that love creates, causing some sort of barrier to synthesize. Perhaps Amortentia being the base of my new potion will "confuse" Avada Kedavra? Let's try it.

This is the winning attempt. But that's just for the base of the potion. It's clear that Ignotus added pages to this book, and an undetectable extension charm. The potion part of the ritual is what Ignotus took the most notes on. This will be the most complicated potion that Severus has ever tried to brew, and that is saying something. Amortentia takes about nine days by itself. No doubt Lily did most of the brewing, Snape thinks to himself as he, along with the rest of the present Order members struggle to sort through Peverell's seemingly boundless works.

"We need to brew Amortentia first," Snape says. "I don't have any in stock, teachers cannot legally store it in school."

"I'll go get the ingredients," Tonks says, growing weary of reading and rereading the ancient sheets.

"Don't drop them. Those are hard to come by," Snape says with more cheek than necessary. Tonks exits the room quickly, nearly tripping over her own feet, with the roots of her hair phasing from baby-blue to fiery red.

As Tonks walks into the hallway, her thoughts wonder toward a certain Werewolf; her hair turns to bubblegum pink.

James and Sirius walk up the stairs with the same adrenaline that they felt when they were kids. Only now, they're at Grimmauld place and with a whole new supply of "treasures" — as they call it — at their disposal. They sneak up quietly. Sirius informed James that the twins' room would be the last anyone would want to try and clean. Lily had left them to their hijinks ("Do whatever you want, just leave me out of it!").

As they make their way to the twins' room, they here the muffled sounds of Molly and the children in the rooms that they pass. As the two men approach the door to the twins' room, and they read the sign on the door.

Of course, James and Sirius take this as a mere challenge. They take out their wands, and walk in excitedly but cautiously, remembering how merciless their pranks had grown by the time they were seventeen. They decide to check the obvious places first to rid the room of any burdens they might find. Their eyes fall onto the mattresses. Basically, having one mind, the two simultaneously step up to the first mattress, and James counts, "One, two, three!" On three, they push the mattress off of the bedframe and duck. They find that the mattress has been rigged with magic, squirting, temporary glue and a second wave of feathers. James then narrowly avoids some kind of powder in which he doesn't want to imagine the contents of, while opening the suitcases. After releasing traps under the beds, and behind the nightstands. The room is a covered in crude liquids and set-off mechanisms.

"Alright, that's all the pranks they could've set up in here, right? Now comes the fun part. Think back to when we were seventeen, hiding our ammo from your mother," Sirius says strategically.

James imagines himself in his old room. There aren't many similarities between his old room and this one. The twins just moved in about two weeks ago and the house is too dangerous to really tamper with much. Therefore, the room looks plain besides the newly made mess. But they both know that Fred and George Weasley are probably the two of the most creative people on the planet and would find somewhere to hide something good. His eyes fall on a portrait of some long dead Black family member. James walks over to the picture and slowly reaches his fingers behind the dirty, silver frame.

"Jackpot!"
