"You're such a freak, Chisaki," one of the kids at the orphanage would say to him. It wasn't even just one of them saying it, in some way or another everyone would imply he was weird or a downright freak.
"I'm not a freak…" Kai would always say back, never looking them in the eyes as he did. He didn't want to see their mocking expressions.
Thankfully it wasn't often they would call him names, only because he rarely left his room to begin with. Sometimes, depending on who was working, the adults in charge would let him in his room. Then there were the ones who thought it would be 'good for him' to eat with the other children. The fact that he would break out just from breathing the same air as them didn't concern the adults at al, they never asked him what was wrong when he had anxiety attacks over it. Shows how much they cared…
What made him a freak anyways? The only thing he could think of was the fact he was alone most of the time and didn't want to interact with anyone else. Was that honestly so bad though? He didn't want to get sick, that's all. Or what his original reasoning was. Now he didn't want to befriend anyone since they were all so mean to him, he genuinely thought that he couldn't have friends no matter where he went.
"Yeah you are," another kid added, "you always want to be alone."
Kai let out a sigh, fidgeting with the plastic fork in his hand. No matter how many times he explained it to them they never seemed to understand.
"Are you sick or something?"
"No!" Kai said loudly, shooting his head up to look at the kid who said that. He wasn't sick. He never got sick, that's why he needed to stay away from them. The fork he had previously been holding practically exploded from his hand, pieces of it shot out. Kai still wasn't 100% sure what his Quirk was or what it entailed, but so far from what he could tell he destroyed whatever he was holding if he happened to lose control. Still lost in his own anger, Kai stood up from his chair and stormed off back to his room while he still had the chance.
He wasn't sick. He was never going to get sick either.
"You're such a freak, Kai," eleven-year-old Hari said playfully with a laugh, obviously not meaning it. Why did he say that? Because he's never seen somebody push their food around their plate to make sure none of the food touches, so to Hari it was a little weird but nothing serious.
Kai's grip on the metal spoon clearly tightened until his knuckles were white, even Hari noticed and stopped laughing. Did he make him mad? They recently started warming up to each other so neither of them were sure where boundaries lied. Kai refused to look up from the table, even though Hari didn't share that same mocking look like the kids back at the orphanage he didn't want to find out. He hasn't been called that since he left, he didn't think he was ever going to hear it again.
"What's wrong, Kai? Did I upset you?" Hari questioned in a worried tone. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt him. He reached out to touch his shoulder but stopped immediately.
"Don't touch me," Kai almost growled, the spoon became deformed, thankfully it didn't explode, Kai has since learned to control his Quirk little by little.
"I'm sorry, I didn't-"
"Leave me alone!" He shouted, throwing the spoon on the table before standing up to storm off.
Hari flinched, Kai never yelled at him let alone raised his voice. Being left alone with his thoughts in the now empty room made Hari feel worse about this, before the Boss took him in he was always alone, but meeting Kai made everything better.
He didn't want to be alone again.
