Hi Folks! Well this one is more than a ficlet. However, this Part 2 of the theory that Lily could still be alive and the hospital made a big faux pas in reporting her dead. The old soap opera theme. I hope you enjoy this part and there is more to come. Thank you so much for the reaction to this fic. Please R&R if so moved. Love - Carebearmaxi.
Shock to The System
Part 2
Marcus met Harvey at the airport. Marcus decided that it would be better for everyone around if the woman claiming to be their mother did not accompany him to pick up his brother. Marcus met him at baggage claim although Harvey planned not to extend his stay but bring the woman back with him to Seattle to meet Donna and his daughters for further convincing if needed.
"Marcus, you know that mom gave me grandma's ring to give to Donna, right?" Harvey hurriedly asked as they walked swiftly to the car from Logan.
"Harvey, it's mom. I know it was hard for me to believe, too, but MaryBeth believes her, Aunt Sally believes her and so do I. I know that's a tough pill for you to swallow—" Marcus protested at Harvey's firmed jaw and unsettled behavior.
"Harvey!"
"Marcus!" They stopped about three feet from Marcus' Jeep Cherokee. "Please allow me to make my own assessment. I need to ask her questions. If it's mom, I want to take her to finally meet Donna and meet Lily and Mimi. So, this is really big for me, too."
Marcus who always looked up to his older brother said, "Look, don't scare her. She's had amnesia for the last year and a half. When her memory returned, all she wanted to do was come back to us."
"Marcus, if she's really Lily Specter, I'll know," Harvey retorted as he threw his overnight bag into the trunk of Marcus' Cherokee.
Harvey called his wife to let her know that he had arrived in Boston safely while on the way to Marcus' house. When Marcus parked at what used to be he and Marcus' his childhood home, he almost felt like a boy again. He stepped out of the car and took a deep breath. It was October and the leaves had changed color to the autumn browns and golds and there were many high piles of leaves waiting to be picked up by the city. A sudden memory flitted through Harvey's brain of a different time when he and Marcus would jump in the piles of leaves raked by themselves helping their mother as their father was either in a New York studio or on tour. Just as quickly the memory flitted away.
"Harvey, mom is in there. Trust me," his brother repeated as he handed Harvey his overnight bag.
Harvey just silently scoffed and took a deep breath taking his bag from Marcus.
The first two people, though, that greeted Harvey eagerly were his niece, Hailey, and his nephew, M.J.
"Uncle Harvey! Uncle Harvey!" They both cried and knocked him over onto the lawn when they ran headfirst into him and clamored all over him.
"Grandma's alive! She is! Daddy told you!" They continued to exclaim while Harvey rolled on the ground with his little relatives. Before he had his own children, these two little monkeys-grown bigger now-were the closest he had come to his own children. He loved them very much.
"Hailey, M.J., let Uncle Harvey off the ground," Katie said laughing as she came to Harvey's rescue dressed in a hoodie.
Until the children allowed Harvey off the ground he had not seen Katie's little surprise she was carrying. He wondered if Donna had just not told him since their own little second venture into parenthood had resulted in a miscarriage.
Hailey and M.J. pulled their Uncle Harvey from the ground and scampered into the house.
"Katie! Your pregnant? Marcus or my secretive wife didn't tell me! Congratulations!" Harvey kissed his sister-in-law on the cheek.
"It was quite a surprise to us as well, Harvey. Don't blame Donna. I didn't tell her in light of the miscarriage," Katie said with happiness in her big dark eyes as Harvey hugged her.
"Well, she's stronger about that now, Katie. I'm sure she will be happy for you," Harvey said holding his sister-in-law's hand. Harvey could see out of the corner of his eye that Marcus had followed his children into the house.
"Thank you, Harvey."
"Besides, we haven't exactly stopped trying if you know what I mean," he responded with a slightly raised eyebrow.
Katie giggled at that remark like a schoolgirl embarrassed by it.
He was about to ask when the baby was due when he looked up and spotted a tallish, slender woman with mid-length graying hair standing on the cement stoop chafing her arms up and down although she was wearing a rather heavy jacket against the early Saturday morning chill. Harvey paused and looked at her. His mouth was a grim line although the woman's mouth smiled warily, but happily to see him as she waved experimentally at him.
Mom? Harvey thought silently. She certainly resembles my mother impeccably. Harvey moved forward in a daze not evening realizing he left Katie standing there in the middle of their conversation.
He walked up to the stoop. He examined her all over with his eyes. The woman reached out to hold him in her arms. Harvey was reluctant to be held by this woman as he did not believe that a hospital could make such an egregious mistake. The upheaval and shock were so horrible not to mention to Donna who had to give him bad news a second time concerning one of his parents.
He pulled away from the woman and he did not flinch when she took his face in her hands and claimed with tears in her eyes. "Yes, it's me, Harvey. I am your mother. I have missed you so much."
With an instinct he had not realized, he hugged the woman back so tightly. He knew the moment she touched his face and looked into her watery light blue eyes that this woman was Lily Specter.
"Mom," Harvey said so quietly and hugged her with all his might. He had missed her so much. All the plans they had been making so she could meet Donna face to face. A little bit reserve was still in his mind as he hugged his mother tightly until she said the thing that convinced him the most.
"Did you use the ring I gave you to marry Donna?"
Harvey laughed with tears streaming down his face. He hugged his mother so tightly taking her slightly off the ground as he did.
He choked and said, "Yes, I did, Mom. It is you!"
"Yes, I'm home," Lily said as Harvey pulled away to look at her.
Marcus and Katie looked from the front window as they witnessed the best reunion beside the one they themselves had had with Lily only a few days ago.
"Hey," Donna said anticipating the conversation with her husband. His silence on the other end was excruciating, and she anxiously waited for his response.
"Hey," Harvey greeted her softly on his phone as he laid down on the sofa bed in his brother's living room. Harvey could have stayed at a four star hotel, but he knew Marcus would have none of it. Besides Harvey enjoyed being with his family. A situation he had not been a part of for the better part of twenty years before his reconciliation with his mom.
"So?" Donna asked. At his continued silence and only an empathic notion that her husband was overjoyed, she said, "She is your mother. I can feel it. I'm so happy for you, for us, for Lily and Mimi." Donna wiped a tear from her eye.
"You know I have always love when you do that. You're a gift, Donna. Yes, she is my mom. I know for certain it's my-mom, Donna." Harvey choked back tears of joy again as he confirmed the wonderful news to his wife.
"Oh Harvey! I'm so happy for you. No shadow of a doubt then?" Donna continued to confirm. She was laying in bed reading a book having just gotten the twins down for the night.
"Just a little at first. Then she hugged me and the first words out of her mouth were "Did you use the ring I gave you to marry Donna?"
"That convinced you. Harvey, this is wonderful. Did you tell her she has two granddaughters who will be so happy to meet her?"
"Not exactly. I wanted to surprise her. We're coming in tomorrow at nine a.m. Seattle time, so we'll be leaving Boston in the middle of the night."
"Do you want me to come get you?"
"No, we'll catch a cab from the airport. We're not that far."
"I'm so excited."
Harvey was silent.
"What?" Donna asked knowing that Harvey was so filled with emotion that he had lost his voice.
"Nothing," he said shaking his head. "Just I love you, Donna."
"I love you, too, Harvey. Lily and Mimi asked for daddy tonight when I put them to bed. They miss you," she said with a smile in her voice.
"I'll see them tomorrow…and you, too. Goodnight."
Donna wiped a tear from her eye. "Goodnight, Harvey."
On this lovely Sunday morning as the plane came in at Seattle's airport, Harvey anticipated the joyous surprise that awaited his mom when they arrived at his house only a few minutes away. He and his mom had done nothing but talk about what had happened to her and where she had spent the time while she had amnesia and who helped her to find Marcus when she had recovered her memory. Harvey's first thought after all the confirmations that Lily was Lily was to sue the hospital for malpractice. Harvey was, after all, a lawyer as well as a family member who was caused pain and suffering by that malpractice.
Lily, in all her practicality, continued to convince Harvey that she did not want or need any financial reparations for any of their mistakes. She was just happy knowing that she was accepted back into the bosom of her family.
"Ok, mom. I'll drop it for now," Harvey promised her as they talked and walked through the airport on the way to the baggage claim area. He had called ahead for a cab to meet them and was pleased that at least on a Sunday the service was there at the curb waiting for them.
"Mom, I'm so sorry you missed both our weddings," Harvey said.
"You had two weddings?" Lily inquired.
"Marcus has told you nothing? I'm surprised. He was always such a big mouth when we were kids."
"I think he wanted to allow you the privilege of telling me yourself. He felt it was not his place until you were sure I was me."
Harvey placed Lily's two suitcases (borrowed from Katie) and his overnight bag into the trunk of the cab. Then the driver got into the driver's side and hurriedly drove away from the airport.
While on route to his home, Harvey told Lily all about the firm where he worked, Donna's new business just started about the time when they had actually moved to Seattle, and mostly about the two weddings his mother had missed.
"Sounds beautiful, Harvey. Seems like my son is very happy," Lily remarked enjoying the love in Harvey's voice and the pride he took in his firm and his wife and her work as well.
"I am, mom," Harvey said quietly. He could not yet voice that the icing on top was knowing that his mother was not dead but alive and well and about to meet his wife and his two baby daughters. Harvey was so excited because he had not told her of his daughters let alone that one was her namesake.
The cab found a parking place in the front of a very wealthy looking high rise apartment building not far from downtown. Harvey and Donna had made plans to move to a more suburban area in a large house like Rachel and Mike's but had not received a settlement date as of yet.
Harvey helped Lily out of the backseat of the cab. She looked up at the tall building and was impressed. Again, she had remembered visiting Harvey at his old condo in New York once when she was in town and this was not less impressive.
"Is Donna home?" Lily asked Harvey as he paid the driver and gave him a generous tip.
"Yes, she is. I told her I was bringing you with me. She is eager to meet you in person this time," Harvey said.
He saw a strange expression alight on his mother's face.
"What's up? You're not scared to meet my wife, are you mom?" Harvey asked frowning.
Lily's face returned to her son and said, "Not scared. Just a little apprehensive. This woman was the one who took care of you and loved you when you wouldn't allow me. I'm sure you told her all about my mistakes."
Harvey stood in front of his mom for a minute before they ventured into the building.
"Mom, yes, Donna has been with me through all the turmoil between us. Dad loved her and was always pushing for us to be together. Marcus it seemed had filled you in all those years. However, it was her that convinced me to reconcile with my family. She harbors no resentment and loves me unconditionally, all my flaws. She'll love you that way, too."
Lily nodded silently and stroked her son's upper arm to signify she was ready for whatever lay in store for her behind the door of her son's home.
Harvey gathered the bags and went into the building.
