Chapter 7: Witches Before Wizards
Mason laid his head on a pillow and wrapped himself in his blankets. All the excitement of today wore on the young man. He closed his eyes and finally let sleep claim.
A loud banging awoke him from his slumber. Mason shot up groggily, he rubbed his eyes with his hand before muttering out "Huh-huh, w-what's going on?"
"Mason! Are you awake? The Emperor demands your presence." Kikimora said, her voice muffled by the door.
The boy wiped drool from his jaw and went to his dresser. He put on the Hexside uniform and made sure that he looked presentable. A second series of knocks came on the door louder then the first. "I'm coming, I'm coming. Keep your shirt on." He opened the door and saw the Emperor's assistant staring up at him.
"I'm sorry to disturb your slumber Mason. But, I believe you'll not want to miss this meeting with the Emperor."
"What does he want this time? To tell me that earth is now experiencing world war three and the titan saved me from having to fight."
Kikimora turned her head "Uh, no master Mason. I believe today is the day you'll be appointed head of the Emperor's Coven."
"What!?" Mason exclaimed, the shock had awoken him better then a hundred cups of coffee.
"Yes, today Lilith is to be reprimanded for wasting the Emperor's time." she said clapping her hands.
"How do you know this?"
"I already told you Mason. As one of the last surviving servants of the titan I know his speaker better then Anyone." she once again clapped her hands, body shaking with excitement "Now let's be off, don't want to miss your ascension, do you?"
"Yeah, Let's go." Mason followed Kikimora into the Emperor's throne room. Well my dad's already gone. How bad can this news actually be.
–––––––––––––––
Mason entered the throne room and was hit with the erratic pounding in his chest as he saw that the heart was going crazy.
The Emperor was standing, shouting at Lilith who was bowed in a respectful position.
"You spied on the Owl Lady without Permission, you used my coven's resources in an unauthorized raid which lead to three of my men being grievously injured in front of the entirety of the Bones-borough bazaar."
"My Emperor, I was just trying to capture my sis–"
"You Embarrassed the Emperor's Coven and thus me!"
Lilith bowed, quivering "Please, forgive me. I did not mean to upset you, my master."
The Emperor returned to his seated position. The heart went back to a steady pace. "Very well, considering that I still need you as Mason's teacher I will forgive you… this time. Now get out of my sight." The Emperor waved her off.
"Thank you. You are most generous and merciful my Emperor." She rose and did a standing bow while she walked away.
When the witch had left the throne room, the Emperor turned his gaze to Mason. "Ah, Mason my boy. How have you been since we last spoke?"
Mason gritted his teeth and had to fight the urge to clench his fists or make any threatening gestures. "I am very well, my Emperor." he said straining to show restrain.
"Good, well now on to why I brought you here." the flames of the brazier began to dance playfully as the embers started to form an image. The image was Mason with his hands held behind his back and tracing spell circles.
"I know what you did in the Comformitorium."
The hairs on the back of Mason's neck stood and goosebumps began to rise. He knew? How did he know? Oh god, am I going to be executed? No, he said that he still needed Lilith as my teacher. That means I'm going to be tortured.
"M-my Em-emperor I can explain!"
The Emperor raised his hand "Save it! I already know why you sabotaged Warden Wrath's attempt at capturing the Owl Lady. I must tell you that I am very… proud of you."
"Huh?" Mason asked, Confused.
"Yes, I know exactly why you did it. You couldn't bear an incompetent love struck oaf like him to steal the glory that is rightfully yours. I appreciate ambition in my servants."
"Thank you m-my Emperor. I am g-glad I pleased you."
"Yes I am very pleased. Thus I am now giving you a mission. you're job will be to get in close with the Owl Lady and spy for me. After her capture I will give you a boon. The titan has revealed what you seek most in world and if you serve me it shall be gifted to you."
Is he serious? He'll let me go? He must really want the Owl Lady bad. Mason thought. He looked up at the Emperor and said, "It shall be done My Emperor."
"Very good, now get some rest. Tomorrow you will start your search for the Owl Lady and ingratiate yourself as a potential apprentice. Dismissed!" He waved his hand and rose from his position to return to whatever he was doing before the impromptu court session was called.
Mason returned to his room and though he was tired. He did not go back to sleep. He was too excited and had to plan. He worked out in his head every scenario that could and probably would occur. He knew that in order to capture the infamous Owl Lady he would need to be crafty and clever.
Needless to say he had a lot of work to do.
––––––––––––––
Mason was exhausted.
There was no other way to put it. No only did he pull an all-nighter planning for how to get in good with the Owl Lady. But he had gone up and down Bonesbourough looking for her. She wasn't at where she usually puts her stand which makes sense since this was a Monday. He asked around about where she lived but the answers had been unhelpful to say the least.
He was about to go back home and fall asleep so he could try again in the morning but he got lucky. He saw the Owl Lady stomping down the Bazaar with her demon dog in tow. She looked worried.
Mason snuck up and decided to see how this plays out. He followed them as they turned down an alleyway. Mason hugged the corner and used a spell to listen in.
"Are you sure this is where Luz met the wizard?" The Owl Lady asked,.
"Yeah, but it didn't look like this when we were here." the demon dog replied.
"I don't like this. Luz may be in serious danger."
"All because she wanted to be a 'chosen one' gah, I'm missing important nap time for this."
Mason watched the duo enter a rusty gate that was almost off it's hinges. Mason crept closer and saw the pair enter a ruined mansion.
The Owl Lady lifted her head and turned toward where Mason was but saw nothing.
"What is it Eda?" the demon dog asked.
"I thought I heard something but I guess it was nothing let's go investigate the mansion." she replied.
Luckily, Mason was hidden behind a crate which he'd ducked down just in the nick of time.
Mason followed them inside the house. When he entered the first room he saw a table and three chairs that looked like they had been termite riddled. He saw a bunch of fliers and maps on the ground. All of them pointed to the same place and talking about how only the chosen can see the way.
"Okay that sounds very cultish."
"So I guess we can roll out the possibility that you are working for Adegast?" Mason heard a familiar voice behind him as he Jumped.
"Hey you're the guy that gave me my crown back." King exclaimed. "Thanks for the upgrade by the way."
"What are you doing following us around?" Eda asked, arms crossed.
"I want to ask a favor of you Owl Lady."
"Listen kid, just call me Eda. Owl Lady is too formal." She started and looked around the mansion with a glare "Also before I can grant any favors I need to find Luz. She may be in big trouble if I don't save her."
"Luz?" Mason looked down and started to think. Of course she'd get taken in by a cad on her first day. I was no different. "I want to help!"
"What? Why?"
"Because I know what it's like to be taken advantage of in the Boiling Isles. I also want to help a fellow human in this crazy world." Mason rubbed his arm nervously.
"Alright Kid. You wanna help? Then get on!" Eda then summoned her magic staff and it flew into her hand. She got into a seated position, King sitting behind her. Mason, familiar with how the flying staffs worked also sat down.
"Alright newbie, Hold on!" at her command the staff shot off and flew toward a desolate village filled with broken down houses and the ground was decorated with strange creepy Puppets.
"How do you know she came through here?" Mason asked, the mist shrouded village giving him the creeps.
"I've been following King's superior sense of smell."
"Yep she's come through here alright. The air reeks of her youthful ignorance." King said smelling the ground.
Eda grabbed one of the puppets and started shaking. "Where is Luz? What's your endgame?"
The puppet turned its head creepily and began to speak. "To find your pupil and still your wrath, you simply have to follow the path." The creature began to erode in Eda's arms turning into mulch.
"I don't like this."
Mason rubbed his eyes. "I'm not in the mood for this rhyming bull shit." he yawned loudly and looked down the Path "Well we gonna go save her or do I have to get there by myself."
"This must be a trap from one of my competitors and I know exactly who it is. You sure you can handle this newbie. You look like your about to keel over."
"Yeah, I can handle myself. As long as your old bones don't slow me down we should be fine."
"Heh, good come back."
"Can we just go already!" King exclaimed.
The trio sat on Eda's staff and flew toward the temple. There they saw Luz being held down by chains that stopped her from escaping.
When they flew in they saw a huge tentacle demon standing over her.
"So Tempter Demon, huh? I knew I shouldn't have taken an outside referral."
"Eda the Owl Lady. You have thwarted my potions business for the last time!" the creature screeched making a grab for the group. Eda's staff swerved but still got hit with an attack, knocking them off it. Eda and King were snatched by one tentacle and another tried to grab Mason.
But before he was grappled Mason drew a spell circle and threw a spell razor at the creature. It cut off the appendage and it vanished in a poof of smoke as the beast yelled in anger. Mason then used another spell to float down gracefully.
"I will crush you for that!" it screamed in rage and struck all it's tendrils at the young boy.
"Not Likely." Mason dodged the attacks of the beast with little effort. Apart of his training with Lilith was anti-demon combat drills. His fancy footwork irritating the beast. But Mason miscalculated a step and tripped on a loose stone unaware of the rock due to his exhaustion.
The creature grabbed Mason and Slammed him down causing a gash to form on his skull.
"Alright you have me. Let the kids go!" Eda exclaimed.
"And Me!" King hollered, struggling against the beasts grip.
"And King." Eda said, annoyed.
"I'm afraid that is impossible. This one." gesturing at Mason "Damaged me! As for your apprentice, well I think she'd prefer a real Fantasy." the creatures tentacle pierced Luz's head and her eyes glowed.
"Luz!" Eda called.
A few tense moments passed and finally Luz gave the creature her decision. "Here I can be a chosen one and be a hero. But, This. Isn't. Real!" she exclaimed breaking the demons hold. She swung her toy sword at each tentacle. Surprisingly it cut each one off and they poofed just like when Mason did it.
After the creature was disarmed. It shrank and tried to scuttle away.
But, Eda picked it up and swallowed it in one bite. She belched and looked around at Mason and Luz "Oh I'm sorry did you want some?"
"No thanks." Luz said holding her hands up.
"Alright Mason you helped me out so I will hear what your favor is."
"I want you to take me on as an apprentice!"
"What!? Why would you want to be my apprentice? don't you already have a mentor? isn't he a big shot in the Emperor's Coven?'
"Yeah they are, but I want to learn from you. They haven't really taught me as well as they should."
Eda slapped her knee and laughed "I never expected an Emperor's Coven ward to be so irreverent. Alright kid! I'll take you on. But in exchange you work for me whenever you have free time. Deal?"
"Deal," Mason shook her hand and smiled.
"Thanks for helping to save me Mason. I thought you were really cool." Luz said, giving Mason a kiss on the cheek.
"Don't mention it Luz. Us humans have to stick together."
"Wait, since you're now Eda's apprentice as well. That makes us rivals! Yes, I have a rival."
"I wouldn't go that far. Just think of me as a teachers aid in training."
"You mean you'll help teach me how to do magic as a human."
"I'll most certainly try." he smirked.
"Alright everyone let's go home." Eda' called as they piled on the staff.
On the ride back Mason decided to catch some sleep and began thinking first step in my plan is complete. I am now spying for the Emperor. But, why do I feel so bad when I'm doing this to go home. No! can't think like that. Eda is a criminal and it's not like the Emperor wants Luz. I will use my boon for him to send me and her home. Then this crazy witch can rot in a cell and be a pigeons roost for all I care! She is the reason I'm here and I'll never forgive her for what I lost.
