Chapter 7

Why

Sitting in the dark moonlit room of my office, hearing nothing but the low ambience of the room, I couldn't help but think about what Infinite said to me. 'Why does Infinite carry so much hatred, and why is he taking it out against Mobius?' I then heard voices coming from outside the office. I as I got up, my legs ached with pain like I had just toke a shock in the legs. I stumbled to the door and opened it to find Silver and my yellow and black spotted secretary Ms. Ocelot mid conversation.

"..was not to be disturbed." Ms. Ocelot said.

"I understand that ma'am, but I've been asked to speak with him by the High Council." Silver replied

"I understand Commander Silver, but.."

"Thank you, Ms. Ocelot," I interrupted, grabbing the attention of both of them. "I can handle this; you may go for the night." She then got up from her desk and left the room. I then motioned Silver into my office. Most of my feeling returned to my legs, but I still walked with a limp over to my desk and turned on my lamp, which gave of an orange glow which lit the entire room. I turned around to sit on my chair as Silver closed the door.

"Have a seat." I spoke. He then walked towards me and sat down on the black cushioned chair in front of my desk.

"I take it from your conversation with my secretary that you're here to talk about my abrupt exit from the meeting, correct?" He nodded. "Well, I won't keep you in suspense." I then explained to him about my ability to wonder outside my body, and my encounter with Infinite. I think you could guess that he was dumbfounded.

"There anything you can't do?" Silver asked.

"Well, I can't time travel," I smirked. "so I'll ask you this. When did Infinite first appear, and who encountered him first?"

"Why do you want to know?" He asked

"This hatred that he possesses, it's not just something that builds up for no reason. Something must have happened to him that's causing him to hold in such anger."

"Well, in answer to your first question, he appeared over a year ago when GUN was about to disband itself."

"GUN?" I asked

"Government Underground Network. They handled most of the law enforcement and military affairs." Silver answered

"So why were they about to disband themselves?"

"I don't know a lot of the details, but I think it's because they needed to divert their resources to creating the Resistance."

"Do you know anyone who would know more?"

"Shadow, and Rogue. They mere members of GUN. Which brings me to your second question. I'm pretty sure Shadow was the first to encounter him." He then paused, he then put his hand on his face.

"What is it?" I asked.

"I just remembered something." Silver spoke. "Infinite had a clone of Shadow working for him when Sonic was captured, and that one attack that was made on Station Square. Is it a coincidence, or is there something more between Infinite and Shadow?" I looked back to when Sonic and I fought the clone.

"Silver, I think your on to something." I said and turned to pick up the phone, when I realized I dismissed her for the night.

"I've been meaning to tell you." Silver smiled. "While you were on medical leave, Tails took the liberty of installing Nicole into your computer." I then turned to my computer (which was two way screened). "Just say her name and she'll show up."

I chuckled, "I feel like an old man right now."

He chuckled back. "No just behind the times." I then gave a playful oof, and turned back to my computer."

"Nicole." I said, and the same brown cat I saw in the meeting earlier showed up on my screen.

"Yes General?" She asked.

"Have Shadow report to my office immediately." I ordered.

"Of course, sir." She then disappeared from my screen.

"Well, now that that's been taken care of, I'll be on my way." Silver said, and got up to leave, when all of the sudden, Shadow teleported into the room, giving me and Silver a bit of a scare.

"You wanted to see me General?" He grunted.

It took me a second to get my bearings, "Did you feel it was really that necessary to Chaos Control into my office Shadow?"

"Nicole said you requested to see me immediately, so I came immediately." He replied.

"Touché." Silver than left the room, closing the door behind him. "I asked you here because I need to know what's going on in Infinites head, and I think you have the answer."

"What makes you think I would know anything about Infinites goals?" Shadow asked.

"It's not Infinites goal's I want to know about. It's his rage." I replied.

"Explain." I then told him the events that I told Silver earlier. "So, he wants to destroy the world, isn't that the reason of this whole war?" He snarled

"Part of it, but you're missing the point Shadow." I then signaled him to take a seat, frustrated he sat down. "People like him don't do stuff like this for no reason Shadow. They have an incentive, a purpose that drives them to do these kinds of things, and I think you're a part of it."

"I have no idea what you were talking about." He said, but I knew he was lying, I could sense him tensing up and his heart rate starting to increase.

"Infinite had a clone of you serving him until you showed up again, and you were the first of the High Council to encounter him."

"That's just a coincidence." He barked.

"Coincidence, or a grudge against you." I said calmly, and the room fell silent.

Shadow sighed, "I was the first to encounter him, but when I did, he was not Infinite."

"What?" I questioned.

"Nicole." Shadow spoke and she appeared on my computer. "Bring up the GUN archives."

"Yes sir." And she was soon replaced by the GUN symbol.

"Voice identification." A female computer voice said.

"Shadow the Hedgehog." He spoke.

"Unknown user detected. Blocking archive."

"Override, Shadow the Hedgehog."

"Override accepted. Second user, please state your name."

"Alpha the Wolf." I spoke.

"One moment." A loading screen then popped up, and then showed a list of files. "Welcome to GUN."

"Bring up the files on Jackal Squadron." Shadow spoke again, a file then opened to show mugshots of seven different jackals with descriptions of them.

"Who are these people." I asked.

"GUN's most wanted during the mid 2480's, Jackal Squadron." He replied

"What were they wanted for?"

"You should ask, 'what weren't they wanted for?' They were bounty hunters; they would do just about anything for a price. Bank robberies, grand theft auto, murder, you name it. But what put them to the top, was there ability to avoid capture. Every time we mad an attempt to arrest them, they always got away. It took us nearly 2 years before finally caught them. Unfortunately, they managed to escape during transit to Prison Island, and disappeared."

"How did they escape?"

"To this day we still don't know."

"When did they show up again?"

"That is where he, and I come into the story." He then presses on my screen and showed a picture of a jackal, with red eyes, wavy white hair, and large pointy ears. My eyes widened because I recognized him immediately."

"That's Infinite!" I gasped

"When I first encountered him last year, he went by Zero the Jackal."
