Breathing.
She felt like she had never been breathing in years. Like she had been choking. Dying. Lost in infinite darkness. With only her memories playing on repeat; and her dreams teasing of what could have been.
But she was alive.
She was alive.
And she was breathing.
Pushing hard against the glass, the glass door opened, Artemis taking in the fresh clean air. Taking a few deep breaths, looking around, she slowly pulled herself up.
Before being slammed back down. Her body felt heavy and sore. Like an old creaky doll, that hadn't been used since the 1800's. It didn't seem to want to move just yet.
After a few more seconds of waking her body up, Artemis pulled herself up again. Half climbing, half crawling out of the coffin. Falling to the floor, she crawled across leaning against the bottom of a table.
Looking around the room (the word cluttered) being her first thought, Artemis stared up at the ceiling. Where a picture, almost like a strange poster with a name scrawled onto it, with a small red feather sticking out of it.
Peter Pan
Artemis shut her eyes, turning away from it. "Taunting me?" she whispered, her voice coming out in an odd rasp. "I didn't want this." she continued, wondering if he was here listening to her. Watching her struggle.
It wouldn't be the first time.
"You, you disgusting gremlin. You did this. I was going to stay with forever, but you broke our deal, you broke our friendship. You broke…Oh, I hope you suffered. I really do." Artemis hissed out, a small tear slipping out of her eye. "No, I don't." she whispered.
The sound of voices and footsteps reaching her ears. Urging herself to move, slow at first, but going fast. Artemis lugged herself along the strange door and objects, holding onto them for support.
She really wished she had some fairy dust, right about now.
"But, of all the scenarios that I concocted, my parents being… I-I just need a little time. That's…That's all." said a voice from outside. Artemis looked through the window, peering at the group of people.
"Oh my god." Artemis breathed out, a burst of strength flowing though her as she pushed the door open, running outside. "David?!" she cried making the group of people freeze.
"Artemis?" David asked, walking forward getting a closer look.
She didn't recognise a few of them, but she could never forget her brother and Snow, Granny and Ruby, all the dwarves, Grumpy.
"David!" she shouted, her voice shaking as she jumped into her brother's arm. Hugging him tightly, burying her head into his crook of his shoulder. "I missed you." she mumbled into his ear.
"Me too, Missy. Me too." he mumbled back, squeezing her back before reluctantly setting her down. The second he did, Snow wrapped her arms around her pulling her into another tight hug. "Oh, I thought you were dead!" she said, holding her tight, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"Yeah…me too." Artemis replied. Snow releasing her, as Ruby and the rest pulled her in; talking eagerly to the young princess.
"Who's this?" the blonde haired woman asked, sounding a little odd. Almost a mixture of weirded out and slightly uncomfortable.
"Oh!" Snow cried, shaking her head slightly her face slightly flushed. "Emma, this is Artemis."
"Yeah, I got that." Emma mumbled, looking down at the girl. She was shorted than her (reaching Snow's shoulder and almost David's), with blonde hair like her and grey eyes that also looked a lot like her own.
The first thought that popped into Emma's head was: 'Was this their kid?'
It was clear to her, that Artemis was close to 'her apparent mother and father.' She just couldn't guess why. Before she could ask, a loud shouting from behind her echoed out.
The group looked at the (what only could be described) as an angry mob running down one of the streets. "What's that?" Artemis asked, holding David's arm.
She was still a bit wobbly.
"I don't know." he replied, as another red-haired man ran up to them. "There you are. Come with me. I need your help. Dr. Whale's whipped everyone into a frenzy. They're going to Regina's house. They're going to kill her!"
"Regina? She's here?" Artemis asked, looking around the town. "Actually, where is here?"
"Great, let's watch." Leroy said darkly, interrupting Artemis questions.
"No. No, we cannot stoop to her level. No matter who she is or what she's done, killing her is wrong." The red-haired man said, shaking his head violently.
"He's right." said the small child; that Artemis could have sworn she's seen before. "Please. She's still my mom."
"We have to stop them." Emma agreed, glancing back at Snow and David, her eyes lingering on Artemis for a few seconds.
"If the Blue Fairy is right and magic is here, Regina could have her powers back." David said suddenly. "They'll be marching into a slaughter."
"What is going on!?"
Running after the angry mob. They were at what could only be described as at a very large house, with big grounds and an apple tree (of course. She could almost laugh at the irony. Least she knew it was actually Regina) Artemis trailed behind David and Snow, not exactly ecstatic about seeing Regina again.
Artemis had an icky feeling the woman remembered their last meeting and was desperate for some sort of vengeance.
Ugh. She was so much like Rumple it was starting to hurt.
Just as they began to squeeze their way through the mob. A man had slammed Regina against a pillar, looking ready to choke her.
"Let her go. Let her go! Let her go!" Emma shouted, rushing through the crowd, pushing the man away from Regina.
"Why should I listen to you?" he growled out. "Because I am still Sheriff." Emma replied evenly. "And because she saved you. All of you!" David added.
"And because no matter what Regina did, it does not justify this." Snow said, wrapping arm around Artemis and the boy. 'Who are you?' Artemis thought to herself, his face tugging at the ends of her brain.
"We are not murderers here."
"Well, we're not from this world."
"Yeah, well, you're in it now."
"Okay, Whale. We're done." David said, pushing him away from Regina and Emma. The man (now Whale) pushed him back roughly. "Back off. You're not my prince."
David paused, looking over him. "Who are you, Whale?" he asked quietly. "That's my business." Whale hissed back.
"Well my business, is making sure this town doesn't go to hell. So, whether or not I'm your prince, isn't the issue. We have a lot to figure out, and this isn't the way to do it." David announced.
"And Regina's death won't provide any answers." Snow said, running up the steps, standing in front of her subjects (well most of them).
"She needs to be locked up. For her safety and-"
Regina's eyes met her, a slightly surprised look crossing her face before morphing into a wicked gleam. Artemis rolled her eyes. 'Please.'
"-more importantly, for ours."
"So, I'm a prisoner now." Regina said, as David closed the door of her cell. They were at the station. Whatever that was, but Artemis guessed it to be some sort of prison slash dungeon.
This place was so weird.
It was giving her a headache.
"The curse is broken. Why didn't we go back?"
"Because there's nothing to go back to. That land is gone." Regina replied, Artemis watching her closely for her tell of lying.
She wasn't.
"We should get to Gold." Snow said, Artemis furrowing her eyebrows. "You mean Rumple?" she guessed, as Snow wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"Yes. Sweetie, I am so sorry," Snow said, pulling them apart from the group for a second. Emma and Henry (that was the boy's name) walked past, Emma looking almost sadly in her direction before ushering Henry off.
"This must be really confusing for you right now, but I promise I will explain everything." Snow said gently. Artemis nodded, leaning into her hand.
She had met Snow ages before she had official met David. She had been one of the first people she had met, after Peter and her 'fell out' and she 'left' Neverland.
Snow had been kind. That was really how it started. She was kind.
"Okay, don't worry about this. Regina and Rumple is the bigger problem right now. I'll manage. I'll be okay." Artemis reassured her.
Snow nodded, giving her a quick hug.
"Keep him safe, Ruby." Emma instructed, when Red pulled up. Emma had 'called' her to fetch them to keep them safe. Something which she usually would have objected to if it weren't that she was thrown into a new world.
She need to see Rumple. Whether to hug him or slap him was rather unclear, but something along those lines.
Sitting down in the red 'car' with a beaming Henry, Artemis looked around (half in wonder, half in terror) at the new world around her.
Ruby/Red was talking, but she really wasn't listening her voice simply fading into background noise.
"Artemis!" Ruby said loudly, making her jump. "Yeah…sorry, sorry." Artemis mumbled, running her fingers though her hair unable to meet their eyes.
She felt incredible stupid.
"You okay?" Henry asked. His face was bothering her. Where had she seen a face like his?
"Yeah, I'm okay." Artemis said, when Ruby stopped the car, opening the door for her. Artemis stared up at the brightly coloured building, a few people walking past typing on a (thin brick?) and talking into them too.
"I take it back. I'm not okay. No."
"So—basically; in this world we are just stories: fairytales in your book. But for us it was our actual lives. And Regina, the Evil Queen with help from Rumple made a curse and used it to send everyone from my world into yours." Artemis started.
"And only she; Regina knew. And she made the town and the lives however she pleased. Ruled for what 24, 26 years. But she didn't know that David and Snow knew about the curse and sent their baby Emma though a magic tree to save her and…make you." Artemis said weirdly gesturing to Henry from across the table.
"Regina then adopted you. Somehow, eleven years later Snow, or Mary-Margret, found a book; that book." Artemis said pointing to Henry's story book. "Gave it to you, you found Emma. Lots of mini adventures I guess. Then Emma broke the curse, by giving you true loves kiss after you ate a bad apple pie?"
"Apple turnover." Henry corrected. Artemis nodded. "Okay." she said pretending to know what that was.
Artemis sighed, glancing down at her strange brown substance in a cup. Bending down tentatively taking a sip. "Oh my god!" she shrieked almost dropping the mug.
"What!"
"What's wrong?" Henry and Ruby cried out, the latter running towards her in worry.
"This…this is amazing!" Artemis cried out. "What is it?"
Henry and Ruby shared a grin and a knowing look.
"Hot chocolate and cinnamon."
