Author's Note: Dad says thanks for the reviews. Some of them came through PM because FanFic was weird last week. Hope everyone had a chance to read chapter 7. The traffic graph says 30 of you clicked on it, and that's about the average. Here's hoping for no trouble today. Enjoy!

The Way Forward - Chapter 8: World Penguin Day
.
Saturday, April 23 (Marathon Day, Continued):
The Newest Hot Night Club in Tokyo (Still under construction):
"Morinozuka-sama, it's an honor to see you."
"Thank you, Fukuda-san. This is my personal assistant, Yamamoto-san, and his husband Lewis-san."
I'd brought Yamamoto-san to the drag club I was opening in downtown Tokyo so he could understand the project. After carefully arranging my other business to operate with as little interaction from me as possible, this is the only project I'll need to concentrate on while training.
His husband, Lewis-san, came along outwardly to 'tag along' with us and then go out on a date with Yamamoto-san after. I was setting them up for a VIP evening at my other nightclub after they spent some time sightseeing and eating dinner.
Actually, I'd called Fukuda-san earlier to let him know I was bringing him. I'm considering him as an assistant manager here and want my manager's opinion. Fukuda-san has the final say since they'd be working closely.
I ran through the basics for them. "The design of this club includes a restaurant and stage on the first floor and a full nightclub on the second and third floors, with the third able to be closed for private functions."
"As you can see," Fukuda-san pointed to the far wall, "the stage and lighting have been installed. A few of the talent have been over to inspect and make suggestions. Once it's to their liking, we'll start having rehearsals to smooth out any issues."
"Hn."
"We're still finishing the floor here in the main dining area. Once that's finished, the tables and chairs will be delivered." He walked towards the left wall. "The kitchen equipment was installed this past week."
We entered the kitchen to find a modern, sleek setup with all the equipment necessary to serve the restaurant.
"Our head chef is currently working out of a rented kitchen to develop the menu. He'll be testing this one over the next week and then move over."
"Hn."
Yamamoto-san was taking detailed notes, and I saw a curious look on Lewis-san's face.
"Do you have a question, Lewis-san?"
He jerked a little in surprise at my voice. "No, Morinozuka-sama. I was just noticing the differences between the kitchen design in New York and Tokyo."
"Interesting," Fukuda-san said. "I'd like to hear about them."
I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back against the wall. This is exactly what I was hoping for.
"I hope Dylan isn't intruding, Morinozuka-sama."
"Not at all, Yamamoto-san. Things can be improved with expert opinions."
His shoulders relaxed slightly, and I resisted smirking.
While the other two were discussing the kitchen, Yamamoto-san and I started going over my calendar.
.
"This kitchen setup is incredible, Fukuda-san."
"Thank you."
"What type of food will you be serving?"
"Our chef describes it as Japanese cuisine with a twist. It is supposed to be 'fun', matching the theme of the performances."
"That would explain why some of the stations are set up in a different order than I'm used to. I'm not familiar with the setup for Japanese cuisine."
We continued our tour, and I asked lots of questions, but I didn't get the impression I was bothering Fukuda-san.
What I wouldn't give to work in a place like this.
.
The tour continued through the ground floor bar and up to the other floors.
"There's a smaller kitchen off the bar on the second floor. It handles the food for the club floors. Mainly appetizers, some with western influences."
I led the group up to the third floor. Morinozuka-sama hadn't seen this yet, so I was a little nervous.
"The design seems to have changed," he commented in the same calm voice he uses whether he's upset, happy, or bored.
"We ran into a slight difficulty with the electrical work. The electrician team suggested relocating the stage slightly to accommodate it."
"Hn."
"I had a few of the performers come in and give me their opinions. The majority actually liked this position better. I apologize for not informing you."
"If the performers preferred this and it doesn't impact the room flow, I have no issue with the decision. Fukuda-san, your overseeing of this project has been excellent, and I am pleased."
"Thank you, Morinozuka-sama."
After a tour of the dressing rooms and backstage, I escorted them to the door.
"I appreciate the tour."
"Of course, Morinozuka-sama."
"I'll call you later tonight with answers to your questions."
He'll want to discuss Lewis-san. "I'll be expecting your call."

Akira's Office, Morinozuka Estate:
Morinozuka-sama:
We were saddened to hear of Fujioka Ryouji's death in February. He was married to our daughter, Katayama Kotoko, who, as you are aware, has also passed on.
It is our understanding that you were given guardianship of our granddaughter, Fujioka Haruhi, by her father upon his death. We currently do not wish to dispute that arrangement.
Years ago, we made a dreadful decision, and disowned our beautiful Kotoko upon her marriage to Fujioka. We never saw our Kotoko again and have never seen our granddaughter, Haruhi.
As a parent, I'm sure you understand the desire for your children to have what's best for them. In forcing our will on her, we forced Kotoko into an unbearable decision.
We wish to make amends and see our granddaughter, Haruhi. Please let us know when the best time is to travel to Tokyo to visit.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Katayama Daisaku
.
"Well?" Akira asked. He'd called me into his office and handed me the letter to read.
"Obviously, this is a delicate subject. And I did not miss their subtle threat about contesting our guardianship." I handed the letter back to him and leaned back in my chair.
"It wasn't subtle, and they have no standing. Haruhi-chan's guardianship is not in jeopardy." He tossed the letter down on his desk. "If we could hold against Ootori, we can certainly hold against these people."
"On one hand, I'm happy to find Haruhi-chan has living family that want to be in her life, but on the other, I worry about everything she's been through and how this could affect her."
"We don't even know if this is real."
"That as well." I looked out the window onto the back grounds. The gardens were bursting with color, but I felt no joy. "Do you think Haruhi-chan will even want to see them after the way they treated her mother?"
"I am not sure, but it will be her decision. I will not force her to interact with her grandparents. But we are getting ahead of ourselves."
He called Isamu-san, our head of security, to his office.
"I'll have him run a full background check of these Katayama's and validate their claims. If there is even the slightest thing off about them, Isamu-san will find it."

Phone Call between Kaoru and Haruhi:
Haruhi: "Hi, Kaoru. How was your day?"
Kaoru: She doesn't know, or she wouldn't be in such a good mood. "Fine. Spent time at the studio with my sketchpad."
Haruhi: "More designs? That's wonderful. I can't wait to start seeing women on the streets wearing your line."
Kaoru: "Me either." How do I tell her? Just like she'd tell me. Straight out and bluntly. "Have you seen any news today?"
Haruhi: "No." Why is he asking? What have I done now?
Kaoru: "You did an interview at the marathon. It's been broadcasting on the news and is on YouTube."
Haruhi: "Great."
Kaoru: "I'm surprised no one's called you about it."
Haruhi: "I was taking a nap until just now, so I had the ringer off." I looked at my notifications. "Nuts. I have several texts from Gorou-san and Endo-san."
Kaoru: "I'm sure they will tell you what I'm going to. That interview was fantastic! You took control of the narrative and spoke about the charity."
Haruhi: "That is why I was there."
Kaoru: "Yes, but most other businesspeople would have taken the chance to hype their company and products. The fact that you didn't has earned a lot of positive press."
Haruhi: "Kaoru, I literally gave that interview three hours ago. How could it possibly have garnered that much attention?"
Kaoru: "Two words. Social media. You really need to follow your hashtags."
Haruhi: "I guess it's everywhere then."
Kaoru: "Yup. YouWeMe was so impressed with your comments, they linked the story to their posts and tagged you."
Haruhi: "That's a good thing, right?"
Kaoru: "It's great. YouWeMe, Petto Chinmi, and Hitachiin Fashions are all getting great press because of your interview." She's going to hate this. "Expect more interview requests."
Haruhi: "Great."
Kaoru: "Sarcasm aside, it is great. Talk to Gorou-san. I'm sure she's thrilled."
Haruhi: "I'll call her and Endo-san to see what they want to do next."
Kaoru: "Perfect. I'll see you on Tuesday for the PR meeting."
Haruhi: "Do we still have to do that? I was fine today without Endo-san."
Kaoru: "You were, but we still have to have the meeting."
Haruhi: "Whatever."

Sunday, April 24:
Imperial Palace and East Gardens:
"It's so beautiful, Akito-kun. I can't believe I've never been."
"I haven't either."
The East Gardens are free and open to the public, so we'd dressed casual along with our bodyguards, hoping to not stand out.
"How was the 5k?" I hadn't had a chance to talk with her yesterday to find out. I know she was looking forward to it.
I do enjoy her shy smile. "It went well. Satoshi ran the marathon in under four hours, which was his goal. Haruhi, Renge, Cho, and I walked the 5k. We tried to walk at a fast pace but kept slowing down as we started talking."
"Must have been an interesting topic."
Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw a slight blush cover her cheeks. "Renge talked a lot about her engagement and upcoming wedding. She's meeting with the wedding planner in a couple weeks."
"Ah." That explains the blush. "I'm sure she's enthusiastic."
"That's an understatement."
I took her hand as we wandered through the traditional Japanese gardens with ponds, well-tended trees, and cherry blossoms all around.
"I've been other places to see the cherry blossoms, but this is better. There's something about seeing the children and couples enjoying them that enhances the experience."
She stopped under one and inhaled deeply. "They're so fragrant."
"Are they your favorite flower?" There are some things I should know about my hopefully future wife.
"They're beautiful, but irises are my favorite. There's something both mysterious and friendly about them."
"Does that make purple your favorite color?"
She pulled me to a stop and looked up at me. "Are we playing 20 questions?" she said with a smile.
"Only trying to get to know you better."
"I'll answer if you will."
"Fair enough."
She pulled my hand and we started walking again. "Yes. Purple's my favorite color."
"Black." We turned towards a pond. "Favorite music?"
"J-pop."
"American and English classic rock."
"Really? Like what?"
"The Doors, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and others."
"I'm surprised. You'll have to play me some of your favorites."
"Definitely." I smiled and tried to think of another question, but she beat me to it.
"Movies?"
"Science fiction."
"Is that your favorite type of book too?"
"Yes. And yours?"
"Action comedies and horror movies, but I read a lot of mysteries."
We went back and forth for hours talking about our favorite movies, books, trips, food, and other random things. Then we moved on to childhood stories but kept ourselves to good ones. Because of our families, the good stories were mainly about friends and school.
I think I've fallen in love.

Fancypants Restaurant, Tokyo:
"Thank you."
My mouth was salivating as the smell of lasagna drifted up off my entrée. I'd suggested Italian, and Honey-kun brought me to the best restaurant in Tokyo.
He looked down at his chicken alfredo and sighed. "It's not cake."
"I know, but we're having cake after."
"Do I really have to start eating like this for your father?"
"You did ask me for suggestions. Besides, your diet isn't particularly good, and you should eat less cake. Don't you worry about diabetes?"
He shook his head and took a hesitant bite. "I guess it's not that bad."
"Good."
If there's one thing I'd like to change about my dear Honey-kun is his diet. Eating huge amounts of cake and little else can't be good for his health.
"I want us to live a long, happy life together. Eating healthier will give us that."
"Alright." He took another bite. "Only for you, Cho-chan."
As we made our way through dinner, we talked about his hiring events next week and any challenges he would face immediately.
"My biggest worry is that it won't happen fast enough." He was playing with his cufflink. Pink diamonds. So cute.
"The good thing is you're not keeping the name. You don't have to worry about losing Shugā customers because those stores aren't coming back. You'll be gaining Bun Bun customers."
That's when I realized Usa-chan wasn't with us tonight. How could I have been so blind? Does he want me to mention it or not?
"That's true. The marketing team is going crazy with new ideas for letting everyone know about the new bakeries, and we're hiring the product development team next week. They have to bring in samples for us to taste."
I smiled at the thought of him eating all the samples himself and leaving none for his staff. "I hope they come up with some creative ideas."
Just then, something caught his eye behind me. I turned and saw Yuki coming in with someone who has to be Ootori Akito. He looks so much like Kyoya. They were dressed rather casually for this place, but with the Ootori name, even if you're not the heir, they'll look the other way.
She saw us and brought him over while on the way to their table. "Cho, Honey-senpai. What a pleasant surprise finding you here." She introduced us to what I now know for sure is Akito-san.
"It's an honor to meet you both," he said with a short bow.
"I'm glad to meet the man Yuki's been talking so much about."
We spoke for a few minutes then they continued on to their table.
"I hope I wasn't being rude not asking them to join us," Honey-kun asked.
"Definitely not. I'm sure they want to be alone."
We were finishing our meals when the waiter brought the dessert cart.
"One of everything, please."
The tiramisu, cannoli, panna cotta, and all the rest were delicious.
.
Akito-kun laughed as they brought out the entire dessert menu for Honey-senpai and Cho. "I guess the rumors are true."
"Definitely."

NEON:
Satoshi, Kaoru, Naoko, and Hikaru danced the night away while the rest followed their hashtags…
Mori:
#MorinozukaSatoshi is at #NEON!
Another good night for the club. After watching Satoshi the other night, I'm not as worried as I was.
#MorinozukaSatoshi is sooooo hot. Why won't he date me?
#MorinozukaSatoshi doesn't date but damn can he dance #NEON [Picture of him dancing with someone]
He should enjoy it while he can. Classes start next week, and he still has to train for the Olympics. He can't keep this up.
.
Haruhi:
This #HitachiinTwins hasn't danced with anyone but her tonight. Which one is he? Are they dating? [Picture of Kaoru and Naoko all over each other]
I must be truly bored if I'm following hashtags tonight. Looks like Kaoru and Naoko are enjoying themselves.
This #HitachiinTwins hasn't danced with anyone twice #NEON [Picture of Hikaru at the bar drinking water, surrounded by a bunch of girls]
He asked if I wanted to come along tonight. I asked him if he'd been dropped on his head.
#HaninozukaMitsukuni spotted eating out with a girl. Is this serious? [Picture of Honey and Cho walking into a restaurant]
Why does anyone care? It's their business. I wonder if the food is any good there.
#NEON is hopping tonight with #MorinozukaSatoshi and #HitachiinTwins [Picture of Satoshi and one twin on the dancefloor surrounded by girls]
This isn't interesting at all. I'm going to bed.
.
Renge:
#MorinozukaSatoshi is at #NEON tonight dancing with every girl in the place [Picture of Satoshi on the dancefloor surrounded by girls]
Doesn't Satoshi look good tonight. Tight black jeans and that button-down gray shirt rolled up to just below his elbows. No wonder he has them lining up.
What some of the girls will wear…like that one in the leather shorts and halter. If I couldn't see her face, I'd think it was Shinobu, but she makes that look work.
She should really not wear yellow. In those club lights her skin is almost green.
Get your ass to #NEON and dance with #HitachiinTwins [Picture of Hikaru with random girl and Kaoru with Naoko]
No doubt the twins would look great. I saw their pictures from that club in Seoul. At least tonight they're dressed differently. Hikaru even put a purple streak in his hair to match his shirt.
The girl he's dancing with now. She knows how to wear clothes. That has to be the littlest little black dress I've ever seen, but she's got the right body for it.
.
Kasanoda:
You won't believe who's at #NEON tonight! #MorinozukaSatoshi and the #HitachiinTwins [Picture of the three of them at the bar surrounded by girls]
Go for it, Satoshi. That's a hot bunch of chicks you've got there.
Hikaru's not doing too bad either. Did that idiot put purple in his hair?
Don't forget this weekend is the official launch of the #Hitachiin #EveryWoman line by #HitachiinKaoru and modeled by #FujiokaHaruhi [copy of one of her ads]
I'm so fucking happy I'm not going to that fashion show. Bu and I are doing something else. Probably something stupid since it's her choice.

Monday, April 25:
Breakfast, Houshakuji Estate:
I came down for breakfast a little later than normal. I stayed up too late watching hashtags and looking at wedding magazines.
There was a large box wrapped in gold paper with a black bow sitting at my place at the table. I grabbed the card and started to read.
.
My Dearest Renge-chan:
Today is World Penguin Day, and I thought that deserves recognition.
Please enjoy the enclosed gift. I hope it goes with the beautiful outfit you've chosen to wear for our lunch date.
I love you, my darling fiancée.
Love,
Tamaki-kun
.
Penguin Day? What on earth?
I lifted the lid and found a 30 cm (~1 foot) tall stuffed penguin resting in a cloud of white tissue paper.
When I pulled him out, there was a magnificent white and black diamond ring tied around his neck with a red ribbon. Understated, with the diamonds alternating in color set in a channel around the ring, it sparkled in the sunlight beautifully.
It doesn't go with what I'd planned to wear, but I know I have something it will work perfectly with.
He does so enjoy spoiling me.

Large Conference Room, Ootori Main Offices:
Ootori Enterprises Board Meeting:
"Now that the reorganization of Ito Pharmaceuticals is approved, I'm informing you all of my personal plans for the next few years."
I paused and listened to the mumbles, wanting to know what my board members were thinking.
"Finally, he's getting married."
"Is this about college?"
"Looks like we might have a real heir soon."
No surprises there. I looked over at Fuyumi, and she gave me a quick nod.
"Starting with the summer semester, I'll be pursuing a BA in Business and an MBA in Finance simultaneously at Stanford University in America."
I sat back and waited for the insanity to start.
"You're leaving the country? Who will run the corporation?" From his posture, he obviously thinks it will be him.
"Why not Todi? It's the best school in Japan, and you would still be in Tokyo."
"Have you lost your mind? How could you run this corporation from there?"
A few were scowling at Fuyumi, no doubt thinking I'd give chairmanship to her. Idiots. I'm not giving anything up.
"Gentlemen!" I growled, making it clear I would tolerate no more outbursts. "This subject is not up for debate. The Ootori Corporation has, for all intents and purposes, conquered Japan. Yes, there are some hospitals not under our ownership, but I suspect the government would step in if we controlled too large a percentage. There are, of course, other segments of the medical field. We will continue to pursue those."
I nodded to my assistants, and they started handing out binders. "What you have is an analysis for gaining a foothold in America and spreading from there. I've already secured naming rights for Stanford's new teaching hospital, thus my reason for attending."
I gave them a few minutes to read the summaries while I sipped my coffee. As confident as I am about this decision, I did not sleep well last night. I dreamt of Haru and me attending classes together, living together, sleeping together. Haru and I should both be going there. I'd give anything and everything for a time machine.
"This is an interesting proposal, Ootori-sama."
"It's not a proposal, it's a signed contract." Idiot. This is a done deal. They don't have a say. That's the luxury of owning the majority of the stock.
"Section four is an overview of how I will be running the corporation from California. It details the satellite office, the independent and online classes I'll be taking for the first year with only one or two in-person classes. There are contingencies for emergencies which include virtual meetings, meeting halfway in Hawaii, and me returning back to Japan when necessary."
Some shoulders relaxed as I reassured them. Did they think I did this on a whim?
"I will also be coming back to Japan on a regular schedule. All my in-person classes will be scheduled after Wednesday's at noon. That allows me to fly back on Friday nights and do business through Tuesday nights."
I finished my coffee and nodded to my assistant for another. "Any questions?"
"When are you relocating?"
"Early June. I'll be traveling there a few times before then to set up the office and inspect the construction of the teaching hospital."
I fielded dozens of questions. It was almost two hours before they were satisfied. I'm going to have to replace a couple of these board members.
.
Ootori CEO Public Office, Ootori Main Offices:
"That went better than expected." I watched the young man sit down behind his desk and start on another cup of coffee.
"I suppose I wasn't expecting so much doubt, but it was false hope." He wrote something in his ever-present notebook and looked back at me. "Thank you for the support, Ono-san. I appreciate it."
How long have I sat on the Ootori Corporation board? Too long to remember. First, helping Yoshio and now his son. I prefer Kyoya-sama. He's breathed new life into this company. "Glad I could help. Some of those old men needed a lesson on who's in charge."
"I couldn't agree more," he smirked. I'm never bored with him.
"I suggest another ball before you leave. Something to reassure everyone. You could tie it to a fundraiser."
"Good idea."

.
Petto Chinmi:
"We've ordered t-shirts, packaged dog treats, keychains, stickers, and lots of advertising. Some have started arriving. The booth has been cleaned and a few small repairs have been made. We're ready."
"Thank you, Gorou-san." Fujioka-sama looked around the room and took some notes in her ever-present blue notebook. "Anyone else?"
As her sponsorship coordinator, I updated her on the contracts and the items for the award baskets.
When Gorou-san hired me, I was thrilled to be working. I'd only finished two years of university before my savings ran out, and I needed a job to save up again.
It's crazy to think this company has a high school 3rd-year as an owner. And she's a Hitachiin model as well. It was hard to not fangirl when I found out.
"How many staff have signed up to attend?"
Imai-san, her assistant spoke up. "All of the office staff and a significant portion of the warehouse staff. Those store staff not working have been encouraged to sign up as well."
"Alright. Make sure we have concession tickets for visiting staff. This is part of their workday, so we'll buy them lunch."
That part would be on me. "Yes, Fujioka-sama. I'll have those ready."
"Everything sounds on track. Thank you all for your hard work for this show. As you know, Ouran starts a week from today. Except for Wednesdays, I'll be coming in after class. That will continue through the show. After that, I won't be here on Fridays unless necessary."
That's nothing that any of us weren't expecting. She's still in high school. I'm not sure when she plans to study. The weekends?
"I'll also be going to visit our factory in Seoul the weekend before the dog show, leaving on Thursday and coming back on Sunday. I'll be available via phone and Skype if necessary.
"Any questions?"
When no one replied, she gathered all her paperwork and smiled at the room. "Thank you everyone. The show will be a great success, and I'm looking forward to it."
So am I. I'll be working in the booth with her, and she's setting everyone working the booth up with Hitachiin suits!

Therapist's Office:
"And then he kissed me. Right there on the path. Can you believe that?"
Actually, I can. Haruhi has the type of personality that is easy to fall in love with. To want to protect and care for.
"How did you respond?"
"…"
"I'm glad he apologized."
"But do I believe him? I want to, but how?"
"Trust is a difficult thing to rebuild. I think you first need to decide if you want to, really want to. If you do, take it slowly."
"That won't be hard. He lives in Karuizawa and I live in Tokyo. I'm not even sure when's the next time I'll see him."
I let her sit and think for a few minutes, while I admired her suit. Obviously from the Hitachiin line she models for. It was perfect for spring, sky blue jacket and pants, navy blue shirt, a mix of the two in a swirl pattern on her scarf. I know the line doesn't carry shoes, but her flats work well with the rest.
I'm paid well for my job, but not enough to own the other Hitachiin lines. I'll be hitting the stores as soon as the 'Every Woman' line comes out.
"I'm not planning on going back to Karuizawa any time soon, so I'll let him decide how he wants to work on our friendship and follow his lead."
"If you felt differently about him, would you have considered dating him?"
She sighed heavily and gathered her thoughts. "I'm not sure. I miss being in a relationship. The intimacy." I raised an eyebrow. "Not that kind," she blushed, "the learning things about the other that no one else knows. Sharing experiences just between the two of you." Her blush grew darker. "I suppose I do miss the physical closeness as well."
"Is there anyone you know that you would date right now?"
"Maybe, but I'm not ready to get that close to someone again now. I miss Dad and my life is a mess. I wouldn't be good for anyone right now."
There's something about the way she's holding herself. I think there is someone, but she's afraid to take that step.
"Can you tell me about your last relationship?"
"I've only ever had the one. Kyoya-senpai."
Thirty minutes later, I'd heard one hell of a story. She's been crying for the last twenty. No wonder she doubts herself and has trust issues.
"Thank you for trusting me with those experiences. It's a lot to unpack."
"I don't think I can talk about it anymore today," she sniffed. I'm not surprised. Just getting it out took quite a toll.
"We can wait for next time." Her frame collapsed in her chair. Did she realize how keyed up she was?
"Have you thought about a hobby?"
"A couple things came up, but I'm not sure. I thought of tennis, but I can't do that on my own. I already read for school, work, and fun, but that isn't what you're talking about. I enjoy cooking, but the chef makes me uncomfortable, like I'm stepping on his toes." She ran her fingers through her hair to get it out of her eyes. "I did play at a GO salon in Karuizawa, right after Arai kissed me and said all those things. I didn't know anyone there, and it felt good to not think about anything else but the game for a while."
"Sounds like you've made a good start. Keep thinking about it. There are lots of GO salons in Tokyo. You can also take tennis lessons and join a club to keep distance from your friends. Or maybe take a cooking class. This is to allow you some time for yourself without any pressure, so don't worry about not finding something quickly. Take your time and explore some options."

Evening, Akira's Office, Morinozuka Estate:
"What have you found out?" I asked Isamu-san. The letter from Haruhi-chan's supposed grandparents had been checked out thoroughly. My wife and I waited anxiously.
"They are her grandparents, parents of Fujioka ne Katayama Kotoko. They live in Nagoya. She teaches elementary school and he's a midlevel manager at bank. A Suoh bank. Neither have a criminal record, nor any other problematic issues I could find." He handed me the report.
"Have they been looking for Kotoko or Haruhi-chan for a long time?"
"No, Sir. From what I've been able to piece together, they hadn't been looking at all before they wrote that letter. They must have seen something and then researched on the internet."
"That's worrisome," Umeko mumbled.
I had to agree. Why all of a sudden? Why had they not been looking for Haruhi-chan all this time? Or, if they'd found her, been keeping up with her? Winning the Ouran scholarship made it to the papers, not to mention her modeling and owning a business. 'Fujioka' is all over social media.
"Do you think it's wise to allow her to meet them if they only just became interested in her?"
I took Umeko's hand. "I'm not sure. Haruhi-chan has a smart head on her shoulders. We should leave it up to her." I looked over at Isamu-san. "But we will be in the room if she chooses to meet them, and Eiji will be close by."
Isamu-san nodded his approval.
"She's been through so much. I wonder if she can even make that decision."
I thanked and dismissed Isamu-san and sent for Takashi.
.
"I know nothing about her grandparents." I handed the strange letter back. "She's never mentioned them."
"What is your opinion of the letter?"
"Something is off, but I can't put my finger on it. Why did they wait so long to contact her?"
"We're not sure and have the same question."
Father dropped the letter back on his desk. Mother started fiddling with her sleeve. I don't usually see them this outwardly concerned.
"Should we tell Haruhi-chan? What do you think her reaction will be?"
I shifted my weight from one foot to the other. Father had invited me to sit, but I preferred to stand. "Yes, she should be told. Haruhi would rather face a terrible truth than a soft lie or omission." They nodded, agreeing with me. "As for her reaction, she will have questions too."
"Very well. We will discuss it with her. If she's undecided or if her decision seems rushed, we'll put off any visit."
"Takashi, will you send her down here, please."
"Yes, Mother."
.
I'm so nervous, I'm shaking. After going through that story of Kyoya-senpai at Sayo-san's, I can't seem to let it go. I was happy the year we dated, but it was all a waste. I don't want to go through that again.
Now Akira-san and Umeko-san called me to his home office. Did I do something wrong? Are they tired of all the social media?
"Haruhi-chan, come in. Would you like some tea?"
I accepted a cup but didn't drink right away. My stomach is upset.
"Oh, Sweetheart, there's nothing to be nervous about. This isn't about anything bad."
Apparently, she saw my hands shaking. Great.
Akira-san voice was firm, but kind. "We received this letter from your grandparents."
Grandparents? I reached for it and read it over.
They want to meet me?
"I have something you need to see. Excuse me for a minute."
I ran up to my room and grabbed that letter I found in Dad's things and went back downstairs.
"I found this in my father's things." I gave it to Akira-san so they could read it.
.
Dearest Kotoko,
Your father and I are sorry for what we said and did. We love you very much and desperately want to meet our granddaughter.
Please forgive us.
Mom & Dad
[Chapter 25, The Next Phase]
.
"Before I found this, I didn't know I had any other living relatives. Well, at least ones that would acknowledge me." I sat back down and sighed, "There was so much going on at the time, I put it back in the box and forgot about it."
"Your parents never mentioned your grandparents?"
"When I was little, they told me they lived too far away. Once I was old enough to understand the truth, Dad told me they'd disowned Mom when she married him." I swallowed cold tea to get rid of the lump in my throat.
"I'm so sorry, Haruhi-chan. That was a horrible thing for them to do. We can't help who we love."
"That's exactly what Dad said, and then we never spoke about it again."
I read my grandparents…no, my mother's parents…no, the Katayama's letter again.
"Can they contest your guardianship?"
"Absolutely not," Akira-san said firmly. "We were named in your father's will. Because they disowned your mother, they effectively disowned you as well. You are safe here, Haruhi-chan."
"Thank you," I bowed my head and leaned back in the chair. "I don't have to see them, do I?" Why is my voice so small?
"Again, absolutely not. Technically, they are not your relatives, and even if they were, you're under no obligation to see them. It's completely your choice."
A huge weight slid off my shoulders with Akira-san's reassurances. Do I even want to see them? After what they did to my mother?
"I'm not sure I want to see them. I have many questions and need answers before I can come to a decision."
"What questions?"
"I'm sure this won't be all, but the most important one is 'why now'? Why wait this long? They contacted mother once and me now. Dad was killed two months ago. If they really wanted to see me, they should have sent a sympathy card."
My spinning head was making my stomach flip.
"I'd also like to know if they think it was worth it. Was it worth disowning your only child because of who they loved? Was it worth not knowing your only grandchild because of who their father is?"
Great. Now I'm crying again. This is ridiculous.
"Why do they want to meet me now? I've lived for 17 years without them. They've lived for longer than that without their daughter. They obviously don't need us in their lives, and I don't need them."
Umeko-san poured me another cup of tea, and I gulped it all.
"What do they want from me? To see me once? To build a relationship with me? To take me from you?"
This is too much right now. I have a fashion show in five days, the dog show coming up, and classes starting.
Both of them are always so patient with me. It must be the meditation.
"Let us respond to the letter with questions. If they genuinely care about you, they will understand our wish to protect you and reply with answers." Umeko-san stood and put her hand on my shoulder. "You don't have to decide anything until we receive a reply, and no matter your decision, we will support you."
It's too much. These amazing people have given me too much. Unconditional support.
I latched onto her in a tight hug. "Thank you, Umeko-san. Thank you."

Tuesday, April 26:
Conference Room, Hitachiin Studios:
Once again, my son Kaoru ran the meeting. Both of them make me so proud. I need to tell them more often.
"Some of you are new, and some of you haven't seen each other in a while, so I'll go around the table. To my left is Mao, my personal assistant, then Honami-san, Haruhi's personal assistant, Fujioka Haruhi who needs no introduction, Endo-san, Haruhi's personal PR representative.
"After Endo-san are the Petto Chinmi attendees. Tanaki-san, the assistant executive director, Gorou-san, marketing manager, Goto-san, security, and Sato-san, legal counsel.
"Next are the Hitachiin representatives. Hitachiin Yuzuha, head of Hitachiin Fashions and my mother, Ando-san, PR, and Harada-san, security.
"Hara-san is with Morinozuka PR, Eiji-san heads Haruhi's security detail, and last, but not least, my brother, Hikaru."
Kaoru took a deep breath and shuffled his papers. "The purpose of this meeting is to discuss security and PR issues that have been coming up as both Haruhi the model and Haruhi the business owner become well known and the two roles start to overlap. I'll hand this off to Ando-san, Hitachiin PR."
"We've reached the point where it is impossible to keep the two roles separate. No matter where Fujioka-san is, she'll be recognized by both, what are we calling them, fan groups?"
Haruhi opened her mouth to object, but just sat back and shook her head. They are fans. The things she's had to get used to in the last six months or so. She's handled it with such grace.
"That will work for this meeting."
"At risk is hurting one brand and therefore hurting the other. To keep that from happening we'll need a careful, coordinated media release schedule, event schedule, advertising, and press."
He pulled out a printed calendar and passed copies around. "The fashion show is this weekend. Fujioka-san will be escorted on the red carpet by Kaoru-san, and Hikaru-san will escort Yuzuha-san. There will be press shouting questions, photographers screaming for attention." He smirked a little. "There won't be anyone asking who you are wearing."
"The Hitachiin's, minus Kaoru-san who will be backstage, and Fujioka-san will be sitting in the owner's box." He turned to Kaoru, "I understand there will be special guests sitting in the VIP section behind the owner's box. Will they be walking the carpet as well?"
"I think they all will want to walk the carpet. Suoh Tamaki and Houshakuji Renge will walk as a couple as will Haninozuka Mitsukuni and Nomura Cho. Sugahara Keiko, Watanabe Naoko, and Ito Yuki will walk as a group."
"Boyfriends?"
"Naoko's with me, but I won't be escorting her, Keiko-senpai isn't dating anyone at the moment, and Yuki's chose not to come."
"Alright." He took a few notes and looked at Haruhi. "Towards the end of the show, you'll be escorted by Hikaru-san backstage and Kaoru-san will take you down the catwalk."
She glared at Kaoru but nodded in agreement. It might be best if we practice that earlier in the day.
"The after party will also have a red carpet and the groups will be the same. There will be press inside the venue, so be cognizant of that."
"So, press all night long," Haruhi sighed. Then she straightened her shoulders and looked at Kaoru. "For him." Her lips moved, but there was no sound. It's a good thing my son realizes what amazing friends he has.
"Gorou-san, can you run us through the national dog show please."
I do like Haruhi's marketing manager. She's sharp as a tack and knows the business well.
"Petto Chinmi will have a double booth with a small area for semi-private meetings. Dog biscuits, t-shirts, stickers, and keychains will be given away at the booth. We also donated items to the winner's baskets." She paused and looked at her notes. "Most of the Petto Chinmi staff will be attending for short periods to see the show and the booth in action. They will all be wearing company t-shirts or polos with the logo."
"I've also done fittings for those in the booth," Kaoru said. "They'll all be wearing suits from the "Every Woman" line."
"Will Fujioka-san be involved in any formal interviews or press conferences," my PR rep asked her marketing manager.
"None have been scheduled, but anything can pop up during the show. If something happens, I plan to be there to support Fujioka-sama, but she'll be giving the interviews."
"That will work fine."
He gave me the signal. "Haruhi-chan, Kaoru and I have thought long and hard about this. I think your personal PR representative, Endo-san, should be with you as much as feasible when you're in public on company business for either brand. She'll be able to head off issues and let anyone know if anything has gone out on social media that we should take quick advantage of."
The entire table turned to her, and she blushed slightly. "Kaoru warned me this would come up today. I've turned it over and over in my mind and believe Endo-san and I can work something out." She smirked at my son. "Kaoru, since you've gotten me into this, you'll also be dressing Endo-san." She whispered to Endo-san, "If that's alright with you."
"Definitely."
"No problem. Endo-san and I will work out a time to get her measurements, and we'll get her a wardrobe."
"Thank you, Kaoru."
"No, thank you, my amazing commoner model." That comment earned him a glare and laser eyes.
"Moving on. Right now, there are two YouTube videos with more than a million hits each. The one from the dog show and the interview from the YouWeMe marathon."
Ando-san caught Haruhi's eyes and said, "The interview at the marathon was excellent. You were polite, professional, and turned the subject to the reason everyone was there, the charity. Hitachiin Fashions received a letter from the organizers thanking you for recognizing them in your interview." Which she handed to Haruhi.
Gorou-san spoke up. "Petto Chinmi also received a thank you letter."
Haruhi's cheeks took on a pretty pink as she blushed at the attention. So innocent. I'm not sure what it would take to make my boys blush anymore.
"Because of the positive response to that interview, we need to schedule more for you." Ando-san is used to working with full-time models. Haruhi hates interviews.
"Why don't you, Gorou-san, and I get together after the meeting to discuss media outlets and a schedule." I nodded at Endo-san's idea. She's relatively young, but that works in her favor as Haruhi's personal PR representative.
"Excuse me," Haruhi pulled her phone out, "I had an interview last week for 'Dog's Life Magazine' as a leadup to the national dog show. It was highly inappropriate, and I believe you all should hear it."
.
Interview recording played

The room went apeshit.

Disclaimer: I do not own any part of Ouran High School Host Club. I do, however, own any original characters and the plot of this story. I also do not own, nor am I making any money from, the following: Olympics, Lego, Duplo, any real restaurant, business, food product, or really anything else that exists.
Author's Note:
So, Haruhi's grandparents appear. Do you think she should see them?
Akito and Yuki getting closer – too sugary?
Had fun writing the NEON section with everyone following the hashtags rather than describing the action from inside the club. Hope you like it.
The PR meeting is pretty long, but we won't be doing another anytime soon. One of the main arcs I wanted to deal with in this book is Haruhi's fame. The good, the bad, and the ugly. That one interview was ugly, but that's not the end.
.
Next Chapter:
Fallout from the interview…Haruhi decides on a hobby…And an old friend(?) appears in her life.
