Pokemon Story: A Normal Journey

~Ash takes a research trip to Alola to investigate the Regional Variants. Intrigued by the Island Challenge he sets out to explore a brand-new region while growing up as a trainer and as a person along the way. Fortunately for him, there is no prophecy or duty for him. That's the other kid's job…~

~Mega 07~

"Rattata and Raticate, A Dark and Normal type Pokemon. When they band together, they steal food from people's homes. Long ago, the Kantonian Rattata came to the Alolan islands aboard cargo ships, and eventually grew into the Pokémon we see today. The numbers of Rattata and Raticate eventually grew so large that Yungoos and Gumshoos were brought in from a different region to chase them off. They have black and grey fur, contrary to the Kantonian ones and have an additional typing…"

Ash keeps staring at the screen in thought before his hand started typing once again.

"Can use moves like Dark Pulse unlike the Kantonian one…"

"I don't know what more to write…" Ash's head hits the keyboard "I wonder why I accepted this…"

"You have to keep going Ash!" Rotom cheers him up "You're only missing about its habits and habitat!"

Ash turns to Rotom with a questioning face "What about it?"

Rotom shows on his screen a photograph of a Rattata in an alley "They turned to live in the city rather than the countryside and they're nocturnal!"

Ash nods in understanding before smiling at Rotom with a saccharine smile "Rotom~! Can you repeat that for me?" his hands hovered over the keys and his smile threatened to split his face.

Rotom simply did as ordered while Ash cheered internally…

Half an hour later found Ash having a chat with Samuel Oak.

"This is very interesting Ash!" The professor looks over his report with a smile "I knew that Rattata and Raticate were black rather than purple and brown respectively, but their habitat and habits is a surprising bit! Very well done"

Ash puffs his chest in pride while Rotom cried about those being his words "It was nothing professor!"

"So any news regarding your island challenge?"

Ash smirks as he shows his mentor his Z-Ring along the Normal Type Crystal "Check this out! I've finished my first trial yesterday!"

"Oho! That is an interesting development!" The professor closes the distance with the screen to see better "Have you tried it, yet?"

"Yes with Rowlet" Ash replies as he realizes something "I haven't shown you Rowlet!" Ash exclaims as he goes to the bed and picks up the Grass Type Pokemon "Rowlet wake up and say hi to the Professor!"

"Roh…" Rowlet kept dreaming, not even twitching at all.

"Sorry he had a tough battle yesterday" Ash apologizes, a sheepish grin on his face.

"Don't worry Ash" The Professor waves it off with a smile "I'm surprised that it has been less than a week and you already have a starter Pokemon under your belt"

"Is it that strange?" Ash asks curiously.

"Well not everyone has a Charmander, a Bulbasaur or a Squirtle as a starter Pokemon, right?" Seeing Ash nod, he continues "That's because the species we call starters are given to trainers recommended by the regional professor. The reason behind this is that their population is usually closer to extinction than other species. When your Pokemon comes from the professors I'm not alarmed, but when you find them in the wild… well that's another issue"

"I see…" Ash looks down, deep in thought "People say that I have luck with the Pokemon I get to capture…"

"And I agree wholeheartedly. In the last years you have trained and domesticated without problems an Infernape, a Krookodile and a Goodra, species known to be difficult to train or hard to find. And we're not talking about that Greninja of your because I think I'll go mad!"

It seems the Professor still holds a grudge over that.

"Anyways Ash, what are your plans now? And what about your friends?"

"I'll be leaving by midday where I'll take a shortcut Lisia pointed out to get to Iki Town" Ash explains to the professor "If I'm lucky I'll be arriving by night-time"

"That seems like a plan. What about them?"

"Keith will be staying here to do some Mantine Surfing and relax" Ash tells him "Lisia for her part is coming with me to meet Hala, she's been wondering about a Pikachu Z-Crystal. I'm curious as hell about it"

After that Ash cut the call with the Professor and checked in with his mother. She was glad that he called and made him remember to change his underwear.

One would think that after so long she would drop the joke…

"Hey Rowlet, what do you say about going down to pick up Pikachu?" Ash asks the small owl Pokemon.

"Roh" Rowlet wakes up and seemingly nods… or maybe it's dozing off again.

So he got up from his desk, picked up Rowlet, who easily eased over his hat, and walked out of the Pokemon Center bedroom. He hummed a tune as he walked down the stairs and found himself in front of the main desk.

"Hey Nurse Joy!"

The Nurse smiled at him and greeted him with a nod "Hello Ash, had a nice night?"

"Definitely; after yesterday we were dead tired" Ash tells her "So any news on Pikachu?"

"Pikachu has recovered nicely and is right now with your friends" Nurse Joy explains "Most likely playing with Lisia's Pikachu"

"Ah thanks then!" Ash turns to the dining area of the center and meets up with Keith and Lisia, both looked relaxed and slightly tanned. Pikachu played with Pika-Chan and Keith's Frogadier.

Both Keith and Lisia left earlier to do some Mantine Surf, as it was what they wanted to do in the first place. It seemed that they managed to actually surf this time, the sun certainly was favourable to them.

"Hiya! How was it?" Ash asks them as he takes a seat by them.

"It was cool" Keith replies as he pulls his Xtransceiver to show Ash a couple of photos "I did pretty well for the first time, Lisia for her part…"

"I got a faulty Mantine!"

"Mantine are living creatures…"

"I know, but mine didn't seem to want to do this!"

"I got on your Mantine and it seemed fine with doing it"

Ash sweat drops at this "I would have liked to see this…"

Keith laughs lightly "You would have witnessed some interesting sights"

Lisia pouts cutely at Keith, punching him in the shoulder "You mean… was I an interesting sight?" She turns her pout into an intense look accompanied by some eyelashes batting…

Keith blushes slightly and looks away "Maybe…"

"Aw!"

All of this went over Ash's head. Well he did get it, but he was not particularly interested in their flirting 'Not that I really care. They can do whatever they want'

"So how's it gonna go?" Lisia turns to him "Did Rotom give you the route?"

"Route 3 is the way" Ash replies while calling for Rotom to show them the map of the island "That shortcut you mentioned was actually a route people around normally avoid due to the ferocious flying type Pokemon"

"I see" Lisia nods in agreement. She picks up her things and walks out of the Pokemon Center, closely followed by Ash and Keith "I can't wait to see Hala. He seems like an old grandpa that everyone loves!"

"He is… kinda manipulative though…" Ash looks in thought at that "So Keith, this is it"

Keith looks at them with a smile "It's not a good bye, Ash. It's more like a 'See ya later'. I'll meet up with you in Akala, being around you seems interesting"

Ash smiles at that "We'll see each other again Keith"

Lisia meanwhile walked up to him and gave him a hug "See ya later Keith! You owe me that dinner!"

With that, they turned away and started walking towards Route 03.

Far away from Melemele, four figures reunited in an undisclosed cave.

'Lugia's Chosen One is here' a firm and baritone voice called out.

'What does it mean for the plan?' A female and childish voice asked.

'Nothing at all, our Champion will appease the coming threat' The first voice replied easily 'Him being here is inconsequential'

A gruff male voice asked in return 'A threat is coming to Alola, the place where the Chosen One decided to visit! He's a magnet for trouble!'

A Female and more mature voice retorted 'How will we keep our Champion safe then?''

'Simple, we keep our Champion away from him for the time being'

With that, the three of the four figures flew away while the last one stood in his place.

Tapu Koko looked to the sky and, as if knowing someone is looking straight at him, asked 'He would make a fine champion… I wonder why all of the sudden Arceus decreed this…'

Ash and Lisia walked through Route 03, according to Rotom…

"Route 03: A steep mountain path surrounded by rocks where a lot of bird Pokémon lives"

"I wonder what kind of Pokemon lives here…" Lisia wonders out loud.

Ash smirks at her "Bird Pokemon, didn't you hear?"

"Oi! I meant which Pokemon live here! As in Rufflet, Taillow, Hoothoot or others!"

Ash and Lisia bickered back and forth until they heard an explosion in the distance. Silently they agree to investigate the issue and soon they stumble upon a Pokemon battle.

"Medicham battlefront!"

"You do it, Garchoo!"

The one with the Medicham is a pale young man who had an extravagant blue tint to his hair along a pair of red eyes. His clothes consisted of a closed white and red jacket along blue trousers and black shoes.

The other one, Ash remembered him from the Kalos League; Remo if his memory was correct. He did not change in any way or form. Even used the same clothes…

"Me an' Garchoo will wipe the floor with yer Ass!" Remo boasts with a broad smile as he brings out his umbrella "Garchoo let's do this! Mega Evolve!"

Remo's Garchomp shone brightly as the Mega Evolution Process took place and when it finished, it was bigger and meaner looking than before.

The other man scoffs at the boisterous act and calls out "This is a Mega Evolution Battle! And thus, I'll grace you with my partner's power! Medicham Mega Evolve!"

Medicham also shone brightly as the Mega Evolution took place. When it was over, Mega Medicham stood in all its glory.

"Woo!" Ash looks on with excitement "A battle of Mega Evolution!"

"Garchoo! Start things up with Fire Blast!"

The other guy simply narrowed his eyes as the Fire Type technique impacts with his partner.

Remo smirks in victory at this "You're done! My Garchoo is the strongest mega evolution!"

The other guy keeps silent as the smoke from the technique dims into nothing.

It was then that Remo's smirk vanishes completely "What?!"

Medicham was covered in a sphere of energy, signifying the use of Protect.

"How!? You didn't issue a command to your Medicham!"

Before the guy could reply, Ash already had the answer "Because it's a Psychic! Medicham is part Psychic!"

Both trainers turn to Ash, surprised by his presence along the woman. Remo though was more surprised than the other guy.

"It's you! You battled Alain!"

Ash laughs awkwardly at this "Yeah it's me… though I didn't want to interrupt the battle, sorry!"

The other guy smirks in agreement "You're correct, this has lagged enough! Medicham, show this oaf what a Mega Evolved Pokemon can do!"

"O-Oaf!?" Remo stammers as his face turns an interesting shade of red "You'll see! Garchoo use Draco Meteor!"

Garchoo shoot to the sky a condensed ball of draconic energy that rained upon Medicham, or it would have.

The only sign anyone got was the guy's small smirk.

The Draco Meteor got covered in pink energy and stopped right before touching the Fighting/Psychic type Pokemon.

Lisia's mouth dropped at the feat "Medicham stopped it with Psychic!"

Ash's smile was telling "A very powerful Psychic!"

The guy calmly extends his left arm until the tip of his fingers touches one of the balls of energy. Right as it made contact, the balls of draconic energy changed directions, smashing into Garchoo and lifting it off the ground to explode in the sky away from everyone's reach.

Garchoo fell from the sky completely unconscious, turned back to normal, only caught by Medicham's Psychic.

Remo's mouth could not have touched the ground with more force as it would have broken, but the shock was clear in his face. Silently he returned his Pokemon and looked at the guy before nodding "You're strong, one day I'll find you and beat you!"

The Kalosian turns to Ash and asks "You wouldn't happen to have…?"

Ash shakes his head in negative "Sorry he's not here"

Remo nods and leaves the vicinity, leaving the other three staring at his back.

"You're strong, just like he said" The guy turns to address Ash and Lisia, the former making the question "What's your name?"

The guy looks at Ash, as if pondering if answering or not… "My name is Hugh"

"I'm Ash and these are my partners Pikachu and Rowlet!" Ash grins widely as he closes the distance "I was wondering if you were up for a battle?!"

Hugh looks at them and simply asks "Those two are the only one you have on you?"

Ash looks at him weirdly "Yeah, Pikachu and Rowlet are the only ones I have on me"

"Then I decline" Hugh states with a serious demeanour "I won't battle weak Pokemon"

"What…?" Ash takes a step back, a sense of Deja-Vu washing over him "What do you mean by that!?"

Hugh raises his arms in a pacific gesture "Your Pikachu is clearly well trained, but it is not on the level to take on a Mega Evolved Pokemon, specially not mine. Your Rowlet is clearly as young as a Starter. I don't do battles other than Mega Evolved ones unless my opponent proves to be strong enough"

Seeing the reasoning behind this, he calmed down, but still spoke confrontational "Pikachu has defeated Mega Evolved Pokemon in the past, there is no reason for you to not accept"

"Can you honestly tell me that your Pikachu can stand against my Medicham after witnessing it battle? The Medicham who's my weakest Pokemon on hand?" Hugh's eyes bore on Ash's and he felt weak suddenly "Clearly not. I'm not seeking to offend you or your Pokemon, but Mega Evolved Pokemon, well trained ones, cannot be defeated by normal ones"

Ash frowns at that. The time Pikachu won against Mega Lucario… well it was a recently mega evolved one…

"It's a simple fact" Hugh continues "I will not battle you unless you prove to me you can, but you…" Here he points at Lisia who looks surprised by her being in the middle of the discussion "You I will battle. I want to battle your Altaria"

Lisia takes a step back at that "What?"

Hugh's eyes bore on her like a beacon "You participated in the Contest Extraordinaire some time ago" He spoke with clear determination to obtain what he wanted "Your Altaria Mega Evolved in the finals of that tournament. I want to battle it"

Lisia shakes her head in negative "I don't do battles just like that" She gathers her wits and her voice evens out "I only battle in Contests, and it's the part I usually don't like about my job"

"So you do it for the showing part only?" Hugh asks for confirmation, to what he gets a nod "Then I'll say that it's a waste of mega stone on your Pokemon"

Ash intercedes with a scowl on his face "Hey that was uncalled for. If she has a Mega Stone then she can do as she wants, you don't decide what it's useful for"

Hugh turns to Ash, to stare at him for a bit before smiling "What a hypocrite"

That makes Ash stop and Lisia to stare at both of them with a wary expression.

Ash blinks at what he heard and asks back "W-What!?"

Hugh keeps his smile as he walks up to him "You won't admit it, but you know the power behind a mega stone is better used for battle… because that's the way we connect with our Pokemon… am I wrong?"

Ash is left without words as Hugh starts making his way towards Route 02.

"For you Lisia, I'll say that we might get to settle this soon in Akala" Hugh stops and looks over his shoulder with a smirk "For you, Ash, I'll tell you what. Prove me wrong, battle me. You're doing the island challenge. Get to Nanu and beat him. After that, we'll talk about a battle"

With that said, he walks away leaving a pair of silent trainers.

Lisia stared at Hugh's retreating form before switching attention towards Ash. The trainer from Pallet Town looked at the ground, fists clenched.

Pikachu and Rowlet stared at their trainer in confusion and concern.

Lisia approached Ash and said "Don't listen to him, he's a douche. I deal with people like him all the time"

"He's telling the truth, you know?"

Lisia looks at Ash in surprise at that "What...?"

"I think that a Mega Stone is useful to further our bond with Pokemon… and I do it while battling" Ash states as he turns to look at where Hugh once stood "But… I'm not stupid enough to think my ideas are over the others" Ash states with confidence, before turning to Lisia "You're my friend, Lisia so don't think that I will let him say things like that next time! I will back you up, I promise"

"Ash…"

Ash looks to the sky and sighs "It's just that I'm tired of people thinking they know everything about me and that he knew that much about me from so little time worried me…"

"Ash… you've got problems" Lisia says with a snort "But thanks… What Hugh said doesn't worry me. I hear it all the time from strangers, people who don't respect what I do. I've known you for a few days, but I don't think you're like him" Lisia starts walking forward and turns around with a smile on her face "That's what's worrying you I guess"

In the distance though, a pair of amber eyes stared as the duo has a heart to heart about their beliefs.

'Sappy ain't them?' A tanned woman looks down at them from her position in a cliff "So it's those two?"

"Yes it's them Big Sis!" One of the Team Skull grunts points at them "You gonna take care of em'?"

'Big Sis' stares at Lisia then at Ash stopping to take a closer look at him 'He seems familiar… wonder where I saw him…'

"What we gonna do?" The other grunt rhymes out "We come on them and strike or…?"

"We do nothing" 'Big Sis' states while beckoning the grunts to follow her "This is Hala's territory, only an idiot would strike here… well there's you two I guess" The young woman shakes her head as she walks away "They're very close to Hala's town. Call me when he leaves"

With that she left to train 'We're doing some serious training, Golbat, Salazzle…'

"Pi… Chu!" The small creature shines brightly as it grows up. It's tail becomes longer and its ears turn thinner. With a final cry, the Pokemon cries out "Pichu! Pi-ka-chu!"

"I can't believe it Pichu… I mean Pikachu! You evolved!"

Hau cheers around while Pikachu and Torracat followed him around, cheering in excitement. Hau suddenly stops and looks to their opponent, forgetting why Pikachu evolved.

"Right gotta catch that Pokemon!" Hau pulls out a Pokeball and throws it at the unconscious Pokemon.

The ball shakes a few times before it clicks and a sound reveals the capture to be a success.

"Yeah we caught it! And Pikachu evolved!" Hau cheers as he closes the distance with the Pokeball, picking it up and releasing it "Hey bud, now you and I are partners because I captured you"

The only answer he got was a Sand Attack to the face.

"You're a though customer ain't ya, Eevee?" Hau asks the Eevee with a smirk "I think we're gonna be fine the five of us"

The Eevee shakes its head with a sigh "Vee…"

"Your dance moves are up to par, very well done"

A Marowak twirled its bone as it ignited in flames.

"Let's see how you do against the Totem of Wela Volcano!" A young man shouts out, his brown and red hair billowing against the strong currents of hot wind blowing at the top of the volcano "Show me what you go, Sun!"

Sun, the boy wearing a striped white and blue shirt, black pants, black shoes and a black capped hat, smiles seeing the challenge issued "You got it, Brionne you do it!"

The Pokemon jumps forward with a determined glint on her eyes "Bri!"

"Start with Aqua Jet!"

Hello everyone! We're back for chapter seven of A Normal Journey!

As promised, this was a very interesting chapter to read. Even now as I proofread it again I get he chills with some things I know I will develop in the future!

Let's check this chapter out! Ash present his first report for Professor Oak regarding his task in Alola! Thought I'd forgotten about it? Ash fought the alolan versions of Rattata and Raticate, so he had to report that!

After that he has a talk with Keith and Lisia who seem to be getting on quite well on their own. Regardless, Keith parts ways with Ash and Lisia as they journey towards Iki Town.

That's a particularity of this story. Ash will have many temporal companions who'll travel with him during some parts of his journey. Otherwise he'll walk alone this time. It's time for him to grow up in that sense and that story reflects that. Regarding Keith, he'll appear later along some cameos in some chapters.

So Ash and Lisia travel through Route 03 where they witness a Mega Battle! The concept is simple, both trainers must battle with Mega Evolved Pokemon. There is a battling circuit around the world that reunites these kinds of trainers to battle.

Hugh is introduced and of course he will be Ash's rival! Well, one of them, but here is one of them! I wanted to introduce a rival character that's antagonistic towards Ash like old times, with Gary (at the beginning), Paul and Trip (Even if I didn't like him that much). Those rivals that get in Ash's head are the best ones, I think. Hugh is a Mega Trainer that, while respectful towards others Pokemon strengths and weakness, won't battle normal Pokemon if he can help it. This is to not create a character that's mean for the sake of it, like Trip.

Also a cameo of a trainer from the Kalos League, Remo, whose ass has been kicked one more time. Nothing more there than letting you know that this Mega Circuit is not really big.

After that we see someone watching Ash along the Team Skull grunts! Who's this 'Big Sis'? Well it's Plumeria you all know that but meh. Have to have some mystery in life.

Then we jump islands and check on Hau! His Pichu evolved into a Pikachu after beating an Eevee that he then proceeds to catch! Hau's roaster grows as his Pokemon become stronger!

And finally we jump to the boy people wanted to see! Sun! And he's going through Kiawe's trial! How will he do? You'll find out next chapter of course! Because I'm doing that battle to start the chapter!

Me: Thanks you! This fic will certainly not be wacky as far as I'm concerned. Switch Up was more a play thing to see how Pokemon fics were written. I mean it was great practice to mesh serious storytelling plus compelling battles. I got much feedback there and I hope I can show those improvements here! Also Ash is know mainly by those who follow the league circuits!

Lightningblade49: If he's going to face the stronger totems and the admins of skull on his ass, maybe the thought of ash bringing a couple of his stronger pokemon over.

Guest #1: This story of retelling of Ash's journey but different from the anime is awesome. I just curious, why didn't you specify Pokémon species in the Pokédex entries (e.g. Tapu Koko, Land Spirit Pokémon, Electric/Fairy type) so they will know what kind of species is? I hope in your next entries, you will specify the Pokémon in future chapters. Again, this story is awesome. Keep up the good work. P.S. You can research at Bulbapedia if you don't know the species category for each Pokémon. It's my only suggestion.

Me: Thanks! Honestly? I forgot. I mean I never saw it as necessary as the important part is the typing, at least for Ash (As he uses the Pokedex as a battle tool in a sense contrary to a researcher). I'll try to get around that, maybe check the older chapter for that :D PS. Where do you think I get my information? Bulbapedia is the best!

PokemonMaster896: This reboot of Ash's journey to Alola region story is great. You've even replaced Ash's companions into a new ones. I don't know much about Keith or Pokken Tournament. I always focused on the main series of Journeys, which he is accompanied by Goh. You mentioned that there will be a Gen 8 Pokémon appearing in this story. As for the story, the main idea of Ash taking Trials is awesome, much like taking Gym Battles. I hope Ash will catch a Pokémon in this story. I want to ask if you will feature Ash and Pikachu performing a 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt Z-Move in this story just like in the anime? Yeah, that's it. I'm looking forward for your next chapters. Keep up the good work!

Me: Thanks! Honestly as far as I'm concerned you should take Keith as an OC in a sense because the game doesn't go too much into detail about the character, but I'm glad you like them. The concept of the Trials being more like gym battles gives the story some linearity, something that Sun and Moon anime kind of lacked. It wasn't bad per say, but unusual for long life fans like me. I'm actually enjoying Journeys very much! In five hours give or take we'll get the second chapter of the SwSh arc which looks promising at least. About the Z-Moves… that would be telling. But Ash will get one of the devastating Z-Moves.

Kagayaki-sama: Are Lisia and Keith will be officially new traveling companions of Ash along his journey in Alola? I can't wait for the next chapter. By the way, this story is cool and interesting to read.

Me: By this chapter you'll realize that Ash will have something along the lines of part-time travelling companions haha. Thanks for your praise!

Flyg0n: I really liked the idea of the Raticate serving as the totem instead of Yungoose, since I was going to start questioning how the trial could possibly challenge Ash. Honestly, I don't have much else to say here except I am really looking forward to Ash's first capture. And I'm not sure about the fanfiction dying part. I feel like maybe it is? But the pokemon section at least seems active still. So maybe its just imagination.

Me: Yeah, this way I have the excuse to say that there is a beginner's trial and an expert trial in a way. Ash's first capture in Alola was Rowlet and I can tell that we're a few chapters away from Ash getting his next Pokemon as I try to keep the captures to the location the Pokemon can be found in the games. That way the captures span over the four islands and it gives room for each Pokemon to develop as best as it can. About the Fanfiction question, yeah the Pokemon section still is active, but I feel that the number of new fanfics per week has decreased greatly, for example. I remember two or three years ago, there were hundred of stories per week :s Maybe it's just my imagination, but thanks for your input!

Erlben Cabuhat: Nice. Ash's first trial went good, Burnet and Kukui are married by the time he arrived and Ilima mentioning his Kalos Conference participation, nice! But just asking four things: 1. Are you a fan of shipping fic or betrayal fic genres? 2. Are you gonna return any of Ash's old Pokémon? It would be nice for any of em to get back in the spotlight,even if it's in a fanfic. 3. Are you gonna add more Canon Immigrants from other games, mainstream and sidestream? 4. Are you a fan of the mangas (like Pokemon Adventures and Pocket Monsters) of the series, like are u gonna add characters from those medias here? Again just asking. Dude keep doing what you are doing. Me: Yeah, he did well. Nothing the electric rat can't beat right? Kukui is married as per the games canon. The Anime did well to develop the couple, even if it was kind of rushed. But it was a first, so they can get off lightly. About you're questions, I'll answer as best as I can: 1. I like some shipping fics (the ones that don't cause me diabetes from reading a few lines), but betrayal fics kinda exhausted me after so many of them. I want to see something more original nowadays. 2. That would be telling (Yes, they will come back). 3. I plan on it, but take in account that many characters can become bothersome, so only a few and mainly for the League. I don't like the idea of playing with OC in a league so we'll see! 4. I only read one manga, Pokemon Re:burst (Which was simply weird). Pokemon Adventures I started reading but I kind of lagged behind on Red and Blue chapter. I have to start once again I guess :D
