After a short trip back to Hadspen, we arrived at what I assumed was Stevie home. Compared to where I previously lived this place felt a bit quieter with traffic only going by once in a while. But now I wondered what Stevie house was like, as the outside didn't give any clues on the state of the home that I would have to stay at. Well until after Colby finishes school.
Entering the house behind Stevie, the first thing was the feeling of strangeness of walking into an unfamiliar house that you haven't been too. Almost like you shouldn't be here. But alas, we had the house tour to see where we would be staying for the future. For the most part of this tour, it seems to be fine with the only exception being the fact that there was only one bedroom that I assume was for Stevie. This slightly concerned me as there wasn't really anywhere that Colby and I could sleep or in my case study for the rest of the year.
"Um, where are we going to sleep?" I asked, hoping to get an answer as we entered the kitchen.
He thought about it for a minute, before responding with, "if you want I could sleep on the chair and you two can sleep on the bed."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yeah I will be fine, I have done it before. Anyway, that was the house tour," Stevie responded as I nodded. "Do you have any other questions?"
"Umm, not really. I might put my stuff down and look around," I responded without giving the slightest clue of what I was seeing in the background.
Noticing that I lost focus on the task and seeing the outside, Stevie asked gracefully, "Oh, is Brom doing his thing again?" as he looked at where I was looking.
"What do you mean, thing?" I questioned hoping to receive a simple answer.
"Ever since he became a Pokemon, he performs his thing outside for about two hours in the midday sun before coming inside and doing nothing else except to sleep and chill."
Thinking through the possible solutions, nothing was really standing out that I could enforce on Brom without feeling like it was being forced. This was especially true when Stevie later told me that Brom wasn't his real name but instead was Nicolas before the event. After that initial transformation, he initially felt lost before working out a new identity and that meant switching his name to be part of the species.
I politely asked, "Have you tried teaching him some moves to give him something to do."
"No, of course not," Stevie responded straight back, almost raising his voice in the process like it was a stupid question.
"Ok, I understand," I added as I put my hands up. I later added, "You probably don't know how to train him as you ain't familiar with these Pokemon. If you want, I could explain to you the basics." After leaving Stevie for a minute, I quickly headed over to where I put my possessions when I entered the house. Searching through my possession, I found what I was looking for. My 3DS that I had with Pokemon Ultra Sun still in the cartilage. To be honest it probably wasn't the best but as I assumed that Pokemon Go was down for good, this was the next best thing.
"Why do you have the 3DS with you?" Stevie asked as I entered the room.
"To aid in explaining the basics," I responded as I flick open my 3DS to reveal what was inside. After loading the game up, I started to explain to Stevie what it was about.
"Pokemon or Pocket Monsters is a monster collector game where you collect and train monsters to battle the gyms and elite four. Each Pokemon has what is called a type which has strengths and weaknesses for that particular mon."
"So it's not as simple as a collecting game."
"No, not really. An example is this Pokemon called a Lurantis," I responded as I got to the screen which showed Lurantis with all of its stats. "In the games, it's a grass type which means it has a weakness to fire and ice while it's strong to water. Naturally, though this is not really as simple as that as Pokemon can have dual types like Water/Grass or Steel/Fairy to name a couple.
"Ok then."
"Now each Pokemon in the games has moves which can either damage or give a status condition to the opponent. They can also give a status move to themselves to boost their stats in battle. This though comes at the expense of power points or PP for short with each move has a limit to how many times they can use it."
Stevie nodded in response as I turned the power off on my 3DS. Before the conversation, I further added, "so if you want to be safe, don't have him around fire. For both mine and his safety."
About a couple of hours later, I was left alone with Brom and Colby. Brom who was outside had come inside and Colby who I had no clue where he was since the completed house tour. After Stevie left to go for work, I walked around the house noticing the little details about his possible life before meeting us. The first being a picture of what I assume was him in his younger days. In that picture was Stevie with what looked like he was in a sports team as he was in a group of around 15 people.
The next picture was him with what looked like a possible partner beside him. This picture made me question what happened to make him all alone in the home. Continuing to look around, I headed out into the backyard where there wasn't really much of a backyard. Instead, it was just a plain grassy area with a fence surrounding the yard. Not really much to be celebrated about.
Going through the house, I noticed that Colby was in the study room, carefully looking through the books that were on the shelves. Beside him was Brom who was chilling in a seat and possibly sleeping if I had to take a guess. Walking past them, I reached the front door with the hope of seeing what was around the neighbourhood. As I opened the door, I made sure to not emit any sound to indicate I was leaving them on their own. That feeling of hoping that they wouldn't wreck the place without a suitable human around being present.
About halfway around the block, I noticed an area of open space where I could possibly train Colby. Maybe even Brom if Stevie was going to let me do the training needed for him. Looking at the space, I saw someone already thinking of that idea in the far distance doing some training with what I assumed was a land-based Pokemon. But I couldn't quite see the small Pokemon as I could only see the back of the person.
Taking notice of the bus stops that I would need to get to Launceston, the next stop was home. Once I arrived back and made sure no one noticed, I opened the door in hope that the place wasn't trashed. Checking around the house confirmed that they didn't trash it as I took a sigh of relief. Walking over to the lounge room, I sat on the stained chair with the laptop that I brought over on my lap.
"Hmm, let's see what is on in the world," I thought, turning on the laptop.
A quick password check later and I had my Glaceon background with all of my applications. The first obvious check was the internet to see if I had missed any news stories that maybe weren't in local news. Sure enough, news about the west coast of America going to complete anarchy was the first thing I noticed.
"Great, America is doing American things again," I thought as I clicked on the article. Clicking it revealed the western part of America had been completely taken over by Pokemon with the human race almost non-existent. The rest of the population going east barring a small population that couldn't get out of the region. Early estimates stating that over 80% of the population had been transformed.
Continuing to browse the internet, the feeling of change really feels like it has begun with everyone being affected in some way or another. For streamers that were transformed into a Pokemon, it means part if not all of their income were now gone as they couldn't exactly stream in this state. For people who own companies or land, this sudden change wouldn't really be something that they expect in a million years. The rest of the population though would I assume made it depend on that particular person and their values. If they really think that they are gone for good or there is still something in there.
"Breloom?" Brom said, distracting me from my thoughts about general life.
"Oh hey, Brom. What is going on?" I asked, knowing that I probably wouldn't get an answer.
Instead of responding, he just took my hand, and we walked over to where the study was. Once there I saw Colby seeming to be paralyzed from something out of fear and worry. Looking around the area, I didn't really see anything that would give this reaction as last time I checked, he wasn't scared of anything. Especially not this bad, that he had frozen in place.
The next thought that I had was possibly move related as some moves do give status to an opponent. Looking through the move pool of Breloom, I noticed that it could learn Stun Spore and Poison Powder as status moves. Considering he didn't look like he was poisoned due to steel immunity to poison, the other option had to be stun spore. If that was the case then we had unintentionally made some progress in helping Brom defend for himself.
Author Note: So another one down and completed and slowly but surely progress is always good. Yes about the Middle East, I have completely avoided as that is a whole mess that doesn't need explaining. So until later, hope you have a wonderful day and made the luck be on your side.
