When they docked in Nassau, everything was slow because of the legal procedures. Mac had a limo waiting for them when they got off the ship. "Now, can I know what hotel it is?" Stella asked.
"No," Mac answered. "You just watch."
Stella watched out the window. She could see the ocean. It was so beautiful. It was blue, and the sand was white. Stella looked at Mac. "I love you," she said.
Mac smiled. "I love you too." He kissed her. "We're going to relax, soak up sun and act like kids while we're here."
"Act like kids?"
"Yes. Just wait."
Stella watched out the window until they saw the hotel. It was "The Cove Atlantis", which was one of the most luxurious hotels in Nassau. Stella smiled. "Oh, Mac! It is gorgeous!" she said.
The hotel was right on the beach. It had everything they could possibly want. The hotel looked like a big castle standing so tall, towering over the beach. The view was incredible, even from the ground. Stella couldn't imagine what it would be like in the room. "What floor are we on?" she asked.
"The tenth," Mac said. "We have a Superior Ocean View Suite. We will be looking right out over the Atlantic. They have a Jacuzzi, and a water slide."
"A water slide?"
"Yes. There's two side by side, and we're going down them at the same time."
Stella laughed. "I think we're going to be more tired when we go home than we were when we left."
"Oh, No. We are going to be having fun."
They finally arrived at the hotel, and got out at the front door. The doorman took their luggage. Mac and Stella went inside to register. Stella was flabbergasted at the inside of the hotel. "Mac, this is incredible!" she said.
Mac smiled. He loved Stella's wonder at everything. He looked around the lobby, which was very spacious. It had large circular chandeliers and a luxurious waiting room. There were several people waiting, so Mac and Stella sat down on one of the sofas. "So, now that I know what hotel we're staying in, what else do you have hidden?" Stella said.
Mac chuckled. "You always have to try and ruin my surprises, don't you?"
Stella hugged his arm. "I want to know! I am so excited!"
"Good. I want you to be excited." Mac smiled his sly smile. "Maybe we'll stay in the hotel all day tomorrow."
"I want to see this resort and this island!"
"You would rather do all that than lie in bed with me?"
"Yes."
Mac laughed. "I've been outdone by a resort."
Stella kissed him. "Don't worry, there'll be plenty of loving in between."
"Okay, I guess I can settle for that."
Mac hugged Stella and smiled. "I don't know if I've ever been so happy in my life," he said.
"I 'know' I haven't," Stella said.
Soon, they got their room and went up to it, while the bellboy brought their luggage. Stella was amazed at the room. She had stayed in nice rooms before, but this was just glorious. It had a sitting room, a dining area, a balcony with outdoor dining. Stella opened the curtains in the bedroom, which looked out over the beach and the ocean. She turned around and looked at Mac. "We may have to go to bed early," she said.
Mac looked out the window. "That's beautiful," he said. "But not as beautiful as you."
"Is this your last surprise?"
"Absolutely not."
"I don't know how much more I can take."
Mac smiled. "You better think up some good stuff for me."
"I've got some good stuff for you."
Stella pushed him toward the bed. "Is this my reward for pampering you?" Mac asked.
"It's one of them," Stella said, as she gave him a passionate kiss. Then she shoved him onto the bed. "You want me to be a vicious tiger or a pussy cat?"
"I have a choice?" Mac asked. He pretended to ponder that. "How about a little of both?"
"Which do you want first?"
Mac chuckled. "Looks like I'm getting the tiger first."
Stella growled at him and crawled on top. "I don't think I've seen you like this," Mac said.
"You haven't seen anything yet," Stella declared.
"Maybe you haven't either."
Mac got up later and walked out on the balcony. It seemed like he could see forever. The ocean looked so blue from here, it was incredible. He looked down at the pool, which didn't have many people around it, since the sun was going down. Stella came out and put her arms around his waist. "Wow," she said. "This is so beautiful."
"Why don't we sit here and watch the sunset?" Mac asked.
"Wonderful."
They sat down on the settee. Stella leaned on Mac's chest. She could hear his strong heartbeat. It made her feel safe. "A year ago, I would have never thought I would be here like this," Mac said.
"Me neither," Stella said. "That night you almost kissed me at my door, I thought I would pass out."
Mac smiled. "Was I that shocking?"
"Yes. Then you said 'I'll see you later, Stella'. I could have punched you."
Mac laughed. "Well, I think I made up for it later."
"You sure did."
"I still can't believe we did that."
"Well, we got married the next night."
Mac looked at Stella's wedding ring. "I'm glad we did," he said. "I love seeing your face every morning." He shook his head. "I don't know why it took me that long to say something about it."
"You were still grieving," Stella said. "I would never have pushed you."
"I know." Mac hugged her to him. "Thanks for letting me take my time."
"I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I knew you would come around eventually. I was hoping it wouldn't be when we were eighty, but, it would have been better than nothing."
"Eighty?" Mac scowled. "I might have been a little old by then."
"I'm glad you didn't wait that long."
Mac looked out across the ocean. "What do you want to do tomorrow?" he asked.
"Everything," Stella said.
"I don't think we can do it all in one day."
"I want to lounge by the pool and just be so lazy, nobody will know I am a Detective."
"I don't want them to even know I am alive."
"That's impossible."
"Why?"
"You're too full of life."
Mac's shirt was not buttoned. Stella rubbed his chest. Mac kissed her forehead. "It's so quiet here," he said.
"No honking horns or sirens," Stella said. "No one fighting."
Mac leaned his head back and closed his eyes. "I think I could sleep all night and maybe two more days and nights."
"Are you kidding?" Stella asked.
"Not really, but I won't do that."
"Are you telling me that you could lay here and sleep for two days in this paradise?"
"If nobody woke me up, I think I could."
Stella laughed. "I don't know if I'll sleep a wink."
Stella sat up and looked at Mac. "You remember when I told you I had a secret?" she asked.
Mac nodded. "Yes. I thought that was the trip you wanted to go on to Paris."
"That was not the biggest secret I had."
Mac smiled. "I thought you were going to tell me if you found out my secret about this trip."
Stella smiled. "I didn't want to tell you until the right moment."
"Is this the right moment?"
"Yes."
"Okay. I'm waiting."
Stella stood up and walked over to the rail of the balcony. Mac was puzzled. "Are you going to tell me or not?" he asked. "It's not something bad, is it?"
Stella turned around and looked at Mac with a smile. "I'm pregnant."
Mac's mouth dropped open. Stella didn't think she had ever seen his eyes that wide. She thought she was lucky he was sitting down, because his face went kinda white. "Well, are you going to say something?" Stella asked.
Mac thought a moment. He didn't know what to say. Stella came back to the settee and sat down. She turned his face toward her. "You're happy, aren't you?" she asked.
Mac realized he was worrying Stella. "Of course, I'm happy," he managed to say. He was still flabbergasted. "I…I just…" Mac looked at her. "I don't even know what to say."
"Just tell me you're happy and glad."
Mac smiled at her. "I'm happy and glad," he said. "I love you."
"I love you too." Stella was starting to cry.
"Why are you crying?"
"I would never have dreamed that I would be here like this. It seems like this is impossible."
"I know." Mac kissed her hand. "I didn't think I would ever…"
Stella had never in her life seen Mac cry, even when Claire died. He had hidden that from everyone, even her, but right now, there were tears coming down his face. Stella hugged him and they cried together. Then they went inside. Mac didn't know how it was possible, but he thought he loved her even more. Stella could feel it in his touch and see it in his eyes. Their whole lives were changing.
When they got back to New York, Stella wasted no time telling everyone that she was going to have a baby. They all surrounded Mac congratulating him when he came into the lab. Stella watched him smiling that shy, sweet smile of his. She knew he would make a great father. He was kind and gentle, and he knew how to love.
