Chapter 8: Sunflower

One week later….

Emily was in her art club as Rad walked into the room to check on his girlfriend. He approached her quietly, wanting to surprise her. "Hey babe," Rad said wrapping his arms around Emily's shoulders while giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Hey, you" Emily said smiling. Rad then noticed her painting. "A giant sunflower?" Rad asked looking up at the painting. "Yeah, I love sunflowers, they remember me of summer, not to mention all the symbolism around it" Emily told. "Did you know that the Ancient Greek believed the sunflower was the symbol of the love between the sun god Apollo and the nymph Leucothoe? They say that Leucothoe was buried by her father when he found out their relationship and Apollo, in response to that, turned her into a flower, and even as flower, she loved him and would spend the days watching him as he moved the sun through the sky, and that's why sunflowers move to face the sun" Emily said. "Wow, that's a great story…" Rad commented. "It's one of my favorites… because also, in a way, it reminds me us" Emily told.

"I've always wanted to see real sunflowers," Emily confessed. "You've never seen one?" Rad asked. "I know, it seems silly, but sunflowers only bloom at the summer and, during it, my family would go to the beach, and by fall I would go back to school, so I never got the chance to see sunflowers," Emily replied. Seeing how his girlfriend was sighing over her sunflower paining, Rad realized how much she really wanted to see that flower. That gave Rad an idea. Autumn was still at the beginning, meaning maybe it would still be possible to do it. Deciding to take a leap of faith, he grabbed Emily's hand. "Come with me," Rad said trying to get Emily to follow him. "Rad, what are you doing?" she asked, as they got out of the room and started heading towards the exit. "We can't skip school" she told her boyfriend. "Em, do you trust me?" Rad asked, turning to Emily and looking into her eyes. Despite knowing it was crazy for them to ditch school like that, she couldn't help but seeing in Rad's eyes he was doing that for an important reason. "Yes of course," Emily replied to him, looking back into Rad's eyes. "Then follow me," Rad said pulling Emily along.

Emily followed Rad out of the building and they went to his truck, getting inside and driving off. "I've never skipped school before!" Emily said with a laugh. "Not my first time," Rad said with a smile as he drove. "Well… I know I should feel bad, but… this is exciting, Radley Heeler, you're turning me into a rebel," she said, while laughing. "Well, I hope you don't turn into one completely, one of us needs to keep being responsible," Rad joked. "So, can you tell me where are we going?" Emily asked looking to her boyfriend. "It's a surprise," Rad said with a wink. Emily only laughed as rolled down the window and let the cool air hit her fur. She had already been drove by Rad before, but that has only been from home to school and vice-versa. However that was totally different, as they were going to a place totally new to her and that made her feel so good.

They drove for about an hour until they reached an old cabin by the lake. As Emily got out of the truck, she admired everything around her. "This place is beautiful!" Emily exclaimed, while twirling around. "My dad takes me and my brothers here every year," Rad said getting out the truck. "But that's not what I wanted to show you," Rad said as he puts his hands on Emily's eyes. "Rad, what…" she started. "Trust me, what I want to show you it's over here," Rad said as he guided Emily over to a nearby field. "Okay, we're here, ready?" Rad asked. And so he took out his hands over Emily's eyes and she saw what Rad wanted to show her. "Oh my gosh!" Emily gasped as she saw a field full of sunflowers, all bloomed and seeming to shine under the sunlight. Emily then felt a tear escaped her eye. "Something the matter Em?" Rad asked. "No, it's just no one has ever done this for me," Emily said looking up at Rad.

"Well, I'm glad I could be the first to do it," Rad said getting close to Emily to kiss her. Rad kisses Emily as Emily kisses him back. Emily then pulled Rad into the field and starts kissing him some more. Rad kisses her trying not to hold back any temptations. Suddenly it started to pour down rain. Emily then screams with laugher as she and Rad run back to the cabin. Rad unlocks the cabin and they enter inside. Both Emily and Rad both shake themselves off from the rain and then look at each other, laughing. "Looks like I'm skipping training, today" Rad noticed. "You say that as if you're disappointed" Emily commented. "Well, I don't mind skipping school, but touch football…" Rad said, stopping when seeing Emily looking at him. "And I'm going to stop talking," he said. Emily chuckled. "You don't have to worry, I know how guys are with sports," she replied. "If you want, we can still take us back…" Rad started. "Sweetie, just because I love you, I'm going to tell you this: I like to have you drive me around, but honestly you're awful at driving and I wouldn't want to be on a car with you driving it while raining" Emily told.

"Wow, who knew you could be so mean with words… actually that's kind of makes you even hotter" Rad said, while putting his hands on Emily's waist. "Good to know that" she replied, while putting her hands around his neck. "So, if we're going to stay here for the time being, why not… set ourselves comfortable?" she asked. "I'd like that, I'll start us a fire," he said as he went to get some firewood. Rad made a fire while Emily found some tea in the kitchen. After Rad brought some logs, he put them in the fireplace and made a fire, with Emily then put some tea boiling by the fire in a kettle. After the tea was ready, Emily and Rad sat down at the couch by the fire, with a blanket over them, trying to get warm. "This was very romantic, Rad, thank you," Emily said drinking her tea. "Your welcome Em," Rad said drinking his tea. "You know, I've never been so comfortable in my life like I am now" Emily told, while looking to the fire and then to Rad. "Or… with anyone by that matter," she added. "Not even… my brother?" Rad asked.

That caused Emily to turn to him. "Do you really want to mess this wonderful moment talking about Bandit?" she asked. "It's just… I know you love me and that you chose me, but… You and Bandit still have a special connection, and feelings are not easy to forget, so…" Rad said, being then interrupted by Emily who kissed him. "Don't ever doubt about my feelings for you, Rad, they're real and pure, I chose you for a reason, I chose you because you're the one that made me feel… something I've never felt before," she said. The young couple traded intense looks, before they put down their tea down and started sharing passionate kisses. As the intensity of the kisses was increasing, the same went for the desire they both felt for each other. Rad, being able to contain himself, stopped. "Emily I…." Rad started to say, thinking that maybe he was going too fast, but he was cut off by Emily. "Shh… I want this Rad Heeler, I want to be with you," Emily said, placing her hand on Rad's muzzle. Rad only smiled at her, unable to contain his happiness, before kissing her. This time they were all over each other, not holding back anything and being filled by their desire.

About an hour later, Rad and Emily were lying on the couch, covered with the blanked, Emily having her head over Rad's chest and Rad with his arm around Emily's shoulder. They both had ecstatic looks, as they just had the best experience of their life. "This was… I can't even find the words to describe it," Emily said. "Neither can I…" Rad replied. That caused Emily to turn to him, while supporting her head with her hand. "Really? You haven't done this with… anyone?" she asked. "Why is hard for you to believe that?" Rad asked. "Well, it's just you had a lot of girlfriends, are you going to tell me you never… you know…" Emily told, teasingly. "Hey, just because I had some girlfriends, and they were not that much, it doesn't mean I had anything more with them, I always promised to myself my first time would be with a special girl," Rad told. "That's… actually very sweet, who would have thought that Radley Heeler, the great touch football captain and desired by many girls, would have such a sensible side in him," Emily commented. "Hey, I got to meet a new side of you, and you got to meet a new side of me, I think we're even," Rad replied. They laughed while they traded some kisses.

It was then they noticed the rain had stopped. "Oh no… the rain stopped, that means we need to go," Rad said. "Really? Uh, I want to stay like this forever," Emily said, while hugging Rad's torso. "So do I, but we better not call too much attention to us," Rad replied. "Oh, you're right… if only we've come in a weekend, we would be able to stay a little bit longer," Emily commented. "Well, that it's not an impossible idea," Rad replied. Emily chuckled. "Careful, having too much of something can make you get sick of it," she teased. "How could I ever get sick of something as sweet as you?" Rad asked, kissing Emily. After they had put out the fire and arranged the cabin, they got out to the truck and Rad drove them back to school.

They were able to get there soon after lunch, with they having to go their own ways to go to their afternoon classes. While going to the classroom, Emily met with Wendy. "Where were you all morning? I haven't seen you in class," she said. "Well, you see…" Emily said, trying to find an excuse, but being only able to smile, as she kept thinking of what happened between her and Rad. "Okay, you don't need to tell me, you were with Rad, I can tell by that big smile on your face," Wendy said. "Yes, I was with him… we…" Emily said. "Please, Emily, I don't want to hear how you two cuddled and kissed… just try not to skip school again, you don't want to jeopardize your studies for a guy," Wendy said. "Okay, I promise…" she replied, while giggling. Meanwhile, Rad encountered Bandit. "Hey there, little bro, how is it going?" he said. "Good, what about you? I haven't seen you around school all morning, please tell me you're not skipping school again, you know mum and dad don't like that," Bandit said. "Of course not, just because you haven't seen me around, it doesn't mean I was not in school," Rad replied. "Oh, look at the time, I need to go to class," Rad hasted to tell, before Bandit could ask any other question.

Later, Emily was at the Art club, painting again. This time, she was painting the beautiful sunflower field she had seen with Rad, which got even better than the last sunflower painting she did, as it contained a lot of life, originated from the amazement she had felt when she saw it and the love she felt for Rad, especially since what happened after. "Wow!" a voice exclaimed, behind her, belonging to Bandit. "That painting… it's amazing! It's perhaps your best work!" he admired. "Oh, thanks, Bandit…" Emily said, in an awkward voice. "It's funny, I think I've seen this somewhere else, it's so familiar…" Bandit said. Hearing that, Emily was a little afraid that Bandit would remember that sunflower field and then put together that Rad had taken her to their family cabin and that something else happened there. "Oh, it's just a sunflower field, like any other, this one is from my home," she lied. "Oh, okay," Bandit replied, much to Emily's relief. "I just came by to ask if you're still up to hear my new music," Bandit told. "Of course, you know I love to hear you playing," she replied. "Thanks, Emily, gotta go," Bandit said, getting out of room. Emily sighed, glad she was able to convince Bandit about the painting. She then looked at it again, just to remember the amazing moment she had experienced with the boy she loved.

Two weeks later.

Emily races out of her room and throws up in the bathroom. Emily leaves the bathroom and finds Wendy next to the door. "You've been like this for a while now. Are you sure your okay Emily?" Wendy asked. "Yeah I just need some rest," Emily said as she headed to her room. "Should I tell Rad that your sick?" Wendy asked. "Yeah just do that," Emily said as she laid down in her bed. "I'll see you later," Wendy said as she closed the door. Emily felt awful as her Stomach was hurting more and more. Emily knew her body well and knew this wasn't normal. "I think I know what this is," Emily said with a slight tear coming down her muzzle.
