Chapter 2
The Arrival
By: SmilingDolphins
The plane sped up, roaring down the runway. It began to lift and finally shot into the air. The plane kept going up. After a few minutes, the plane leveled out and the seatbelt light turned off. Nick finally unclenched his claws from the armrests. Judy looked over and noted the deep gouges in the seat. She raised an eyebrow.
"Nick, are you afraid of flying?" She asked teasingly.
Nick barked out a frantic laugh, causing a few looks to be thrown their way.
"Me?" He asked in a voice that was much higher than usual. "Afraid of flying? No way Carrots!"
But his eyes were wild and his eyes were laid back, and he was breathing quickly. Judy reached over and gently grabbed his hand, which earned them a look of disbelief from an antelope across the aisle. Nick quickly calmed down but refused to let go of Judy's hand. Judy looked out of the window. Down below, she could see the ocean stretching forever in front of them. She could just barely see the shoreline of zootopia behind them.
"Well, we've got almost 12 and a half hours until we land. Try to get some sleep." Judy said.
With that, she laid her head and Nick's shoulder(earning them another look) and was snoring the second she closed her eyes. It took Nick a while but eventually, he felt his eyelids grow heavy. Finally, he fell asleep, resting his head on Judy's.
Nick and Judy were woken up by the jolt of the plane touching down. They looked out the window. They were at a small airport that was right next to a river. The airport only had one main runway and a small terminal. They had no idea what city they were in, as the tickets didn't say. They both sat up and stretched, rubbing the sleep out of their eyes. They waited patiently as the plane taxi to the gate. They got their bags from the overhead compartments and walked off the plane. They headed to baggage claim, where they grabbed the rest of their luggage. They walked out of the airport and spotted a welcome sign.
"Avram Iancu International Airport welcomes you to Cluj-Napoca, Romania," Nick said reading the English translation.
They walked past the sign to the pickup zone. They looked around and spotted a Lynx in a chauffeur outfit, holding a sign with their names on it. He stood in front of a sleek black 2020 Jaguar XF.
Nick was about to call out to him when the lynx spotted them and walked over.
"Bună ziua domnului și doamnei Wilde, mă numesc Alexandru și voi fi șoferul dvs. pentru timpul pe care îl petreceți în România. Te rog vino cu mine." The lynx said.
Nick and Judy were both surprised to find out that as soon as the words were out of his mouth, they understood them.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Wilde, my name is Alexandru, and I will be your chauffeur for the time you spend in Romania. Please come with me."
The lynx led them to the sedan and opened the back door for them.
"Mulțumesc" Nick and Judy both said, the word coming to the from nowhere.
"Thank you."
Nick and Judy slid into the backseat. Alexandru took their luggage and put it in the trunk. He walked to the right side of the car and sat in the driver's seat. He started the car and drove out of the airport and came to a stop at a light.
"I didn't know you knew Romanian." Judy and Nick whispered at the same time.
"Sunteți vampiri, da? Este în sângele tău să înțelegi româna. Ai auzit de zicala: „Legenda este întotdeauna înrădăcinată în adevăr?" Ei bine, același lucru este valabil și pentru vampiri."
"You are vampires, yes? It is in your blood to understand Romanian. Have you heard of the saying, 'Legend is always rooted in truth?' Well, the same goes for vampires."
"Are you a vampire?" Nick asked.
The lynx looked in the rearview mirror, his eyes now red.
"Cam," He said.
"Kind of."
"What do you mean kind of?" Judy asked. This time, the lynx answered in broken English, with a heavy accent.
"Technically, I am called Vampling. Ale mele mother was normal râsul, but father was full vampiri."
"Oh," Nick said. The light turned green and the lynx turned. Nick always knew you should know what street you are on, so he analyzed the street sign. The lynx turned onto a street called Strada Traian Vuia. The lynx drove for about 5 minutes before taking an exit onto Centura Apahida-Vâlcele. He drove south for 15 mins before merging onto DN1/E60/E81.
"Hey, Alexandru, where are we going?" Nick asked.
"Bran Castle. Is about 4 hours away." He replied.
Nick and Judy didn't feel tired so they passed the time by taking in the sights. After an hour they stopped in a city called Câmpia Turzii for dinner. They continued driving. It had been 7:00 when the plane had left Zootopia. The flight had been around 13 hours. When they reached the airport, it was 8:00 in the morning. Now, after 4 hours in the car, they reached the town of Bran at around 12:30 in the morning for them.
Alexandru drove them through town before heading towards the more forested region on the outskirts. He turned onto a steep road. As he drove up the hill, the castle came into view. Judy gasped recognizing it.
"That's Animicula's castle!" She said. Alexandru wrinkled his nose.
"Animicula is a myth. Only made for movies. Real vampire story was much different." He said defensively.
"Oh. Sorry." Judy apologized. Alexandru drove up to the gate, where a Brown bear sat in a guards booth, typing on his computer. The bear looked up when he heard the car.
"Ah, Alex. Go right in." The bear called. He pushed a button and the gate rolled out of the way. Alexandru parked the car in between a Roll's Rhino and a Lynxus. The 3 of them got out of the car and walked over to the huge doors. The doors opened, seemingly by themselves, once they got close. They entered a large hall, similar to Simon's house. Alexandru placed his keys on a ring next to the door.
"Mrs. Sângelui! They have arrived." He called.
Then, from the top of the huge staircase, a shrill scream split the air.
HAHAHA. I have cliffhangered you! Looks like you'll have to wait. I think that's all I have to say right now.
