Casey felt his body shaking, he opened his eyes and found himself in bed, the room was dark and he was confused. Was it an earthquake? Then he heard moaning, and he realized it wasn't him. Turning his head he saw Severide flopping one way and another in the bed like a fish trying to escape a hook.
"Kelly?"
Severide moaned again in his sleep, but Casey would've sworn he also heard him murmuring "No...no!" as well. He pressed his hand on Kelly's shoulder and shook him to wake him up, "Kelly..."
It took a couple tries but Kelly's eyes finally opened, he sat up in the bed and looked at Casey, eyes wide with fear and panic.
"Kelly, what's wrong?"
He didn't say anything for a minute. Then, in a strained voice, he answered, "I dreamt I was back at the hospital, the night they brought you in...I walked in...and I saw you...and I ran out again...I heard you screaming my name, and I could hear a voice telling me to go back...it was my own voice...but I couldn't stop myself, I just kept running...I knew it was wrong but I couldn't stop...oh God..." a shudder ran through his whole body as he tilted his head down and brought both hands up to his face, "I'm so sorry, Casey."
"Kelly, it was just a dream."
Severide shook his head as he lowered his hands, "I shouldn't have run out on you, I'm so sorry." He leaned over and put his arms around Casey and pulled his friend against him and held him tight, his voice was thick with tears as he told Matt, "You have no idea how horrible I feel about what I did."
Casey's own eyes widened as he felt Kelly's body trembling against his as the Squad lieutenant started crying. For a moment his mind was just in a haze before he remembered how to form words and he rubbed one hand in a circle on Kelly's shoulder as he told the darker haired man, "Kelly, I'm not mad at you for what happened."
He heard Kelly inhale a shaky breath that came back out as he sobbed, "I...hurt you..."
Casey closed his eyes for a second to blink back the sting of tears trying to form. "Kelly, you don't have to feel guilty about what happened."
Severide sucked in another hard breath that came back out in a broken voice, "You needed me and I ran out on you..."
Matt calmly responded, "You came back, you stayed with me all night, you've been with me every single day since then...I couldn't ask for anymore than that, Kelly. You've more than made up for it."
Kelly didn't seem convinced, he leaned against Casey and dropped his head on Matt's shoulder, the words were only half coherent now, "You needed me and I wasn't there, I'm so sorry for what you had to go through, I'm sorry you had to go through it alone..."
"I'm not alone now, Kelly," Matt assured him. "You're right, I did need you, and you've been here for me, you're here now...that's all that matters. Look at me."
Severide hesitantly picked his head up and stared at Casey, tears running down from his eyes.
"You're my best friend, Kelly, and nothing's ever going to change that, you were always there when I truly needed you...I love you."
Kelly's face scrunched up in a pained expression as he tearfully replied, "I love you too."
"Then we're good," Casey told him, "I don't want you feeling guilty about this anymore, it's over, you're here now...we're fine. Okay?"
It took a couple tries but he finally got Kelly to nod in agreement. Casey hugged him and told him, "Come on, I don't think either of us is getting back to sleep."
"This is so messed up," Kelly groggily said half to himself as he sat at the kitchen table while Casey fixed them each a cup of coffee. He couldn't wrap his head around the fact Casey was the one who was attacked, was...brutalized, and instead Casey was the one comforting him.
Casey put two steaming mugs of coffee on the table and sat down across from him, "I'm serious, Kelly, I don't want you obsessing over this, it's over."
"I can't help it," he weakly replied. "Every time I think about that night-"
"Then stop thinking about it."
"I can't!" Kelly told him. "Every single day I remember it and how much of an idiot I was..." he paused for a few seconds, then in a much quieter tone he admitted, "I just want to crawl under a rock every time I think about it."
Casey pushed his mug to the side, folded his arms on the table and sank down in his seat till his head was on top of his arms and tried to make eye contact with the long faced man in the other chair, "I know...I feel the same way every time I remember I punched you."
That drew a small laugh out of Kelly as he straightened his spine and told Casey, "That's different."
"How?"
"Because you didn't mean to do it."
Casey sat up straight in his chair to look Kelly in the eyes and pointed out, "And you didn't mean to run out of my room, I know you didn't."
Kelly looked at him for a minute and said, "I hadn't thought about it like that."
"Kelly, we're good, you don't have to keep worrying about it," Matt told him. After a pause, he sighed and added, "If you're up for a challenge, I need your help with something."
Kelly blinked, "What's that?"
"I'm embarrassed that I have to have you stand watch in the bathroom every time I get a shower," Matt said. "I know there's nobody else here, I know nobody's going to come in, and I've tried to do it without you in there, but I just can't. I just can't get past the idea that somebody's going to sneak up behind me when I can't see them."
Severide mulled this over for a minute before he said, "What if for the time being you just took a bath instead of a shower? Then you could watch the door at all times and you'd know."
"Yeah, except for when I wash my hair," Casey pointed out.
That hadn't occurred to Kelly. He thought about it again, and after a minute he said to Matt, "Okay, so what if, until you're comfortable taking a shower again, I help you wash your hair over the sink, and then you don't have to worry about it when you bathe?"
Casey blinked. "You'd be willing to do that?"
"Sure, it's no problem."
Casey looked like he couldn't believe it.
"Thank you, Kelly."
A scream woke him up. Kelly shot up in his bed and saw Casey had just done the same thing and was breathing heavily.
"You alright, buddy?" he cautiously reached over and placed a hand on Matt's shoulder.
Casey nodded as he gasped and wheezed.
"Another nightmare?"
Casey nodded again.
Kelly nodded sympathetically, and nodded towards the lamp, "You want to keep this on?"
Casey huffed and puffed for another minute and finally, reluctantly, nodded his head.
"Okay, it's fine, no problem," Kelly said as he turned on the bedside lamp and lit up the room.
Casey covered his eyes for a minute until they could adapt to the sudden brightness. When they finally did, he surprised Kelly by laying on him and clinging to him, as he had the first few nights.
Kelly felt a need to ask, "This really helps?"
He felt Matt nod against him. "I can't explain it, but it does."
"Hey, I'm glad to help any way I can," Kelly told him, and admitted, "I just feel bad that this is about all I'm good for."
A sound similar to a laugh escaped from Matt as he pressed himself tighter against Kelly, "You're good for plenty, Kelly, don't sell yourself short."
Kelly thought he knew the answer, but he didn't feel right if he didn't ask, "Can I hug you?"
A tired and desperate, "Please," was all the answer he got, and all that he needed.
He held Casey tight in his arms and looked up towards the ceiling, waiting for Matt to fall back to sleep, waiting to fall back asleep himself, waiting for something to happen, wishing something would, wishing that somehow something would happen that they could both move on from this. He didn't know if it was possible, but he wished it was.
There was a knock at the door the next morning. Casey went to answer it, not giving much thought to who it could be.
"Voight!" He fell back a step at the sight of the Intelligence cop on his doorstep again, he went to slam the door shut but Voight blocked him and swung it open to step in.
Kelly came running from the kitchen to see what was going on, and if need be, to toss the cop out on his ass.
"How're you doing, Casey?" Voight acted like this was all perfectly normal and he was just dropping in to pay a visit.
"What're you doing here?" Casey asked. "I already told you everything I know."
"I wouldn't bet on that," Voight replied, "but that's neither here nor there. I need you to do something for me, Matt, I need you to look at a picture and tell me if you recognize this person from anywhere."
This intrigued Kelly and he came up to see what was going on, "Do you have someone? Do you know who it was?"
Voight raised a hand to cease the questions. "That's what I need Casey to tell me." He took out his phone and showed Casey a picture of a slightly built man with short blonde hair who looked to be in his 30s.
Casey's eyes widened as he announced, "He wasn't one of the men who raped me."
"Not saying he was," Voight replied ambiguously.
Kelly was confused. "Then who is he?"
Voight answered, "His name is Mike Ceretta, he's a detective out of the 1-8. We have reason to believe that he may have been the actual intended target for the rape, and that the assailants mistook Casey for him."
"What?" Kelly asked.
"What?" Casey repeated in total disbelief.
The cop and the Squad lieutenant both looked at Casey, whose eyes were wide and he was slowly backing away, and didn't even seem to realize where he was as he started to stammer in a panicked tone, "No...it can't be...that can't be it...it couldn't...no..."
"Matt," Kelly reached for him, "calm down, Matt-"
Casey screamed as he punched Kelly, who went down with a shot. Casey was yelling at the top of his lungs and lashing out as Voight came up behind him and the two men struggled briefly before Hank got Casey in a sleeper hold. In a few seconds it worked and Casey started to lose conscious and he went limp in Voight's arms.
Kelly felt his eyes roll back in his head and found himself on the floor looking up. He forced himself to sit up and he saw Voight crouched down beside Casey who was unconscious on the floor.
Kelly was pissed off and he told Voight as he moved over beside him, "Every time you come around here, I get hit!" It was only then that he noticed Casey's unconscious body sprawled on the floor, "Oh my God, what did you do to him?"
Casey was slowly coming around, and as he did he covered his face with his hands, drew his knees towards his chest and broke down crying. Kelly crawled over to him and put his arms around Casey and held him close for a minute before helping him get to his feet, though by now Casey was mostly a dead weight against him.
Matt looked at the cop and his eyes were wide in disbelief as he said, "It can't be right..." he marched over to Voight and was in his face within two steps and yelled at him, "You mean the reason I was raped because of some mistaken identity?"
"It's starting to look that way, Matt," Voight answered, unfazed by his outburst.
For some reason this seemed to be too much for the fireman to take. He fell back against Kelly and gasped like he couldn't breathe, and just kept murmuring, "No...no...it can't be...it can't..."
