Jay waited for the door to close behind the doctor before walking over to the chair and grabbing Hailey's clothes, "So that was a little weird."

Hailey laughed as she slipped her gown off, "What?"

Jay passed her her clothes and watched her get dressed from her spot on the examination table as he put his own coat on, "She was all up in your business. I didn't like that."

Hailey laughed harder with a roll of her eyes, "Oh my god."

"She was!" Jay leaned against the counter, eyeing the stirrups Hailey's legs had been in minutes earlier, "I'm being serious. How was that comfortable?"

"It never is," Hailey hopped off the table and finished pulling her pants on.

"God," Jay shook his head, "That's awful."

"But," Hailey stepped toward him and slid her hands up his chest, "At least we know for sure I'm pregnant."

Jay smiled and grabbed her waist, "Yeah, we do know that."

"I wish we could have heard the heartbeat," Hailey sighed while grabbing her coat off the chair.

Jay nodded, "Next time. It's just too early," he fixed her hair so it wasn't stuck in her hood.

"I'm nervous," Hailey breathed, "What if something happens? It's my first baby. I-I can't lose it."

"I know," Jay whispered and bent down so they were making eye contact, "Nothing bad is going to happen. We're going to go get those vitamins right now and we can work on having healthier food for at least dinner," he smiled at Hailey's soft laugh, "It's going to be okay."

"On the inside," Hailey rested her forehead on his chest, "What about work?"

Jay shook his head and hugged her tightly, "I don't know."

Hailey gripped the back of his coat, "I don't want to think about it right now."

"We're going to have to eventually think about it," Jay said.

Hailey nodded against him.

Jay gently played with the back of her hair, "We can talk-"

"I'm going to step down."

Jay's hand paused in her hair. He could practically hear his own heart beating out of his chest. He wasn't surprised, he'd seen it coming from a conversation that had taken place years before, but it was still hard to hear the words aloud.

Hailey wiped her eyes and sniffled, shrugging as she stepped back from him, "It's the right decision. I can't go running around the streets while pregnant. I can't lose this baby. I can't…I can't end up like Kim."

Jay chewed his lip and slowly nodded, "If it's what you want."

"I want to be safe," Hailey said, "And I want to be there for our kids." She breathed shakily and set her hands on his chest, "Are you okay with that?"

"Am I okay with you putting your health and the happiness of our kids first?" Jay asked then tilted his head to the side, "Hailey, don't ask questions like that."

She blushed and looked down at their feet.

Jay ran his hand through her hair and tilted her head up, "Do not let anyone ever tell you you're doing the wrong thing. You are making the best decision for you and our family and the amount of respect I have for you," he shook his head, "Unmatched, Hailey Anne."

She tried to smile, quickly wiping her fingers under her eyes.

"We're having a baby," Jay whispered while setting his hands on her middle, "And you're growing it."

Hailey laughed and weakly pushed his shoulder, "Stop."

"You're amazing," Jay chuckled, "I am so excited to watch this happen."

"Because it's not happening to you," Hailey took a deep breath to steady herself, "I'm going to balloon out."

"It's going to be so damn cute," Jay kissed her forehead.

Hailey shook her head with a smile, "What about when my feet get big? Or when my hair falls out after I have the baby?"

Jay raised an eyebrow, "Those things happen?"

"Yes," Hailey crossed her arms, "See? Not cute."

"Hey, I didn't say it wasn't cute," Jay said, "Just curious. As long as you still have your pretty face," he winked, "And, obviously more importantly, your big heart, I don't care how big you get or how much hair you have. I married you. Deal with the compliments."

Hailey laughed harder and reached up to kiss his cheek softly, "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Jay set his hand on the side of her head, "I say we go pick up our little trouble maker from Will and then go get lunch before I head into work, sound good?"

Hailey nodded and slipped her hand in his, "Are we in agreement though not to say anything about the baby or me quitting yet?"

"Definitely," Jay kissed the top of her head before opening the door for her.

As Jay walked into the bullpen, he nodded at Kim on the phone and headed into Hank's office, knocking on the door slightly and stepping in, "Sarge."

Hank looked up from his computer and nodded, "Hey, everything okay with Hailey?"

"Yeah, yeah, she's good," Jay closed the door behind him to avoid looking Hank in the eyes. To avoid any questions, they'd said Hailey seemed to catch a bug, so they went to the doctor to make sure it wasn't something Blake could get.

Jay'd thought it was a funny excuse because she had certainly caught something that could probably qualify as a bug before it turned into a baby.

"Good," Hank leaned back in his chair, "Do you need something?"

"Just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be taking the test," Jay said, "I've been studying for the sergeant exam and I feel good about it. I think I'll be good at this."

Hank smiled, "I agree."

Jay was going to walk out, but then stopped to ask, "Will this unit be mine?"

Hank chuckled, "Maybe."

Jay smiled slightly, "Thanks."

Hank nodded, "Anything else?"

"Uh…no," Jay opened the door, "I'll get to work."

"Before you do that," Hank said, "Is she planning on coming back?"

Jay sensed the meaning behind his words. Hank had said he'd heard them talking about having a baby. He also wasn't stupid – the chances he knew what they were really doing today were pretty high.

So Jay couldn't help the small smile that formed on his face. He nodded though, "Yeah, she'll be back."

Hank smirked, "Within the next year?"

Jay sucked in a breath to hide his laugh, "Let me know if you need anything today, I'm gonna catch up with Kim."

"You do that," Hank said.

Jay slowly nodded a few times then walked out. He wasn't going to tell Hailey about that conversation – hit just a little too close for comfort.

Not like everyone knowing would be a bad thing, but the doctor had given them the harsh reminder that they were extremely early in the pregnancy. She was thinking just a few weeks, saying they wouldn't know for certain until she did the ultrasound the next month since the baby was much too small now for it to even be worth it.

He had held back his disappointment at the time because he didn't want to have any negative emotions at all around Hailey. She was nervous enough as it was, she didn't need him to bring her down in any way.

He'd never been to a doctor appointment with her. He'd been with her if she needed stitches or just to check-in after a rough day at work, but a full-on appointment? No. He couldn't say the same about her and his appointments unfortunately. One too many run-ins with bullets and fences and, well, fists made sure of that.

He wasn't sure what she'd want him to do. He went into it wanting to hold her hand the entire time, but he didn't know what she'd want in return. In reality, he expected her to want space and he was fine with it. He could sit and watch and give her space.

Once she was on the table, though, she had reached out for his hand and held onto him tightly whenever possible. He'd had to step back a couple times for the doctor, but then he was right back at her side holding her hand and brushing his thumb across her forehead if she was laying down. He wanted her as comfortable as possible, so he ignored the pit that had formed in his stomach when she had her blood drawn and just kept his eyes on hers.

Neither one of them liked being vulnerable in front of others and, in that moment, she was being pretty much as vulnerable as anyone could be.

He could never.

"Jay."

He tore his eyes from his computer screen to look up at Kim, "Yeah?"

She rolled her eyes and laughed, "You okay? Did you catch whatever Hailey has? I was saying your name for a solid minute."

"Oh," Jay shrugged, "Sorry. Everything okay?"

Kim waved her hand, "Answer my questions first. Are you okay? Are you sick?"

"No, no, I'm not sick," Jay shook his head, "And I'm completely fine."

Kim laughed, "Sure."

"I am," Jay said.

"Mhmm," Kim nodded, "Okay, if you say so."

"I do," Jay walked over to her desk, "All right, show me where you're at. Catch me up."

Hailey laid on the couch and watched Blake play with his toys in front of her. He was giggling and crawling around in circles stuck in his own mini imagination with the stuffed animals he loved so much.

Her hand swirled around her stomach and she closed her eyes.

Jay told her everyday maybe once an hour that there was a baby inside of her. Admittedly, she had been terrified that he was wrong. She knew false positives were a thing, so what was stopping the world from giving her one?

Her secret over the past week since finding out she was pregnant was that she took a pregnancy test every single day before she took a shower to make sure it was still positive. She didn't want to tell Jay because she didn't want to hear his reassurances…and it was just getting expensive.

He was being incredible though, not that she was surprised. She knew going into their marriage that he was going to be an amazing dad. Over the past year and a half of watching him with Drew and then with Blake confirmed what she'd known all along.

Drew came into the living room and plopped onto the recliner with a book.

Hailey smiled as she sat up slightly, "What do you have there?"

"I got it at school," Drew said and showed her, "I'm borrowing it just like when we go to the library."

"Gotcha," Hailey sat up completely, "Want to come read to me?"

"But what if I mess up the words?" Drew asked, "I haven't practiced it."

"Eh, that's okay," Hailey waved him over, her smile widening as Drew settled on the other side of the couch.

Blake looked up and whined, hitting his hands to the carpet.

"Well, if you want to listen to the book too, get over here," Hailey said, "Come here."

Blake blinked up at her then laid on his stomach. Drew and Hailey watched him struggle for a second before he pushed himself up and crawled over to them.

"There you go," Hailey picked him up and held him on her lap, "See? That wasn't hard."

Drew cleared his throat, "Okay, I'm going to read. Don't interrupt me, Buzz." He shot a pointed glance at Blake as he opened the book again.

Hailey smiled along as he read the book. It was flawless as always – his soft voice reading each word with precision and paying particular attention to each punctuation mark, doing his best to emphasize the right words.

She wished more than anything that there was something she could do about his nerves at school. After he'd switched into a new class the week before, his teacher had reached out that Drew struggled with participating in groups no matter how many kids were there. Neither she nor Jay was surprised. Drew was still very much

set on not having friends and avoided talking to people he wasn't comfortable with.

A part of her hoped that having a male teacher, a first for him, would put Drew at ease, especially since he seemed to really like the male special education teacher, but that didn't seem to matter to him. He'd still say he missed his second grade teacher even after admitting that this new one was 'sort of cool.'

Drew flipped to the last page of the book and his eyebrows scrunched up, "It doesn't say 'the end.'"

"You can add it in," Hailey said while bouncing Blake on her lap.

"No, I can't do that," Drew shook his head and shut the book, "Oh well. Was that good?"

"Very good," Hailey smiled. She looked down at Blake, "Did you like it?"

Blake grabbed her hair and tried putting it in his mouth.

"That's super gross," Drew laughed.

Hailey shook her head and laughed along softly as she slipped her hair from Blake's grasp, "It's fine. It's just what babies do, right?" She tickled Blake's sides then held his hands to remind him how to clap, "Say, 'good job Drew.'"

Blake giggled with her and smacked his hands together, jumping around on Hailey's lap.

"How was school today?" Hailey asked softly.

Drew looked up from watching Blake and shrugged, "School."

Hailey raised an eyebrow, "Anything bad happen?"

"Why do you ask me this everyday?" Drew groaned, "I don't like repeated questions."

Hailey held back a sigh, "Because I want to make sure everything's going well. You have a new teacher and a new class and-"

"And it's normal," Drew shrugged, "I'm still not in Matt's class. I have no friends, you and Dad need to accept that."

Hailey would have laughed at the statement had it not broke her heart at the same time. She let out a breath and gently held Drew's chin, "You know I love you as you are, right?"

Drew blushed and slowly nodded.

"Dad and I love you so much, we wouldn't want you any other way," Hailey said softly, "We do not care how many friends you have or how often you talk in school, we just want you happy."

"I know," Drew whispered.

"Are you happy?" Hailey asked.

Drew bit his lip and pulled away from her. He ran his fingers over the cover of the book as he thought. Finally, after Hailey wanted to cry because she thought he was going to say 'no,' he said, "Yes. I'm happy. I love you and I love Dad and I love Buzz and of course the rest of our family."

Hailey weakly laughed and nodded, "Of course."

"School sometimes makes me sad," Drew continued, "But…I know I need school, right? If I'm always sad about school, then I would just be sad forever and I don't think I want that."

Hailey blinked her eyes quickly and lightly squeezed his hand, "You have no idea how happy I am to hear that. Can I hug you?"

"Well, yeah, you're my mom," Drew said.

Hailey shook her head and hugged him tightly to her side, kissing his head a few times even when he squirmed in her arms, "Let me love on you for a bit."

Drew huffed, "But Buzz is poking my face."

Hailey quickly sat back and looked down at Blake reaching for Drew's nose, "He's obsessed with noses?"

"No, he's obsessed with Dad's nose," Drew said, finally letting out a laugh, "He loves your hair too."

"He does, doesn't he?" Hailey smiled and held Blake up, "You're just too silly for us."

Blake let out a loud laugh and wiggled in her hands.

"Be careful, he always pukes on Dad," Drew tried tugging her hands down.

"I know, I think that's funny," Hailey laughed and cradled Blake back in her arms.

Drew tried not to smile, knowing how mad Jay got when they laughed at him, but after a moment, he couldn't help it and started laughing with Hailey.

Soon enough, they were in a fit of laughter on the couch with even Blake joining in with their happiness.

They were so lost in their thoughts that they didn't even notice Jay walk in the house until he was leaning over the back of the couch.

"Hey," he said softly.

Hailey jumped slightly and quickly moved away.

Drew covered his head, "No!"

"Hey, hey," Jay chuckled and hurried around the couch to kneel in front him, "It's just me. Bud, it's Dad, it's me."

Drew looked up and blushed, "I knew that."

Jay held back a smile, "Come here," he gently hugged Drew and slipped his hand to his chest, feeling his heart pounding against his shirt.

Hailey shook her head at Jay, "You're in trouble, Dad," she rubbed circles over Drew's back, "Everything's okay."

"Drew, you know who's coming over tonight?" Jay asked.

Drew sat back and wrung his hands together, "Who?"

"Aunt Vanessa," Jay moved to sit on the coffee table, "She needed some family time, so what do you say? Want to cheer her up?"

Drew smiled and relaxed, "I can do that. Maybe she'll want to see my Lego city."

"I bet she would," Jay nodded.

"I'll go make sure my room is clean," Drew grabbed his book and ran upstairs.

Jay laughed, "Isn't his room always immaculate?"

"Yeah," Hailey rolled her eyes with a smile, "What's up with Vanessa, though?"

"Um," Jay took a deep breath and sat next to her, grabbing Blake from her lap, "She got in a fight with Kevin. Well, I don't know who started it, but they came back from an undercover thing and they were pissed. Kevin's going to Kim and Adam's tonight; I thought it'd be a good idea to invite her here."

"Thank you," Hailey said, "When's she going to be here?"

Jay glanced at his watch, "Maybe half an hour? I told her I was going to make chicken fried rice."

Hailey raised an eyebrow, "I thought we were having pizza tonight."

"I thought you wanted to eat healthy now," Jay said.

Hailey rolled her eyes to the next century and laughed, "And fried rice is healthy?"

"Healthier than deep dish," Jay laughed.

"Fine, we'll have chicken fried rice, as long as you're cooking," Hailey kissed his cheek and stood, "Maybe you can change Blake's diaper too." She winked and started walking away.

Jay looked at Blake, "Is Mom serious?"

Blake giggled and grabbed Jay's nose.

Jay sighed, "Yeah, yeah, you're funny. All right, let's go, buddy. Gosh, funny how Mom did that, huh?"
