"So where to next Hikari?" Asuka asked, in a much happier state than usual. Today was her Birthday and she was having an absolute blast. She had woken up to Shinji cooking and breakfast and made an attempt to make it interesting. She had mercy on him and even responded with a 'Thanks' when he greeted her. Misato had decidedly given her Twenty-Five thousand Yen, no small feat at all.

"Well, what exactly do you want? Considering I haven't gotten you anything yet" The class President replied, turning around to face her.

"Hmm, surprise me, I'll stay here and you find something," Asuka said, a grin on her face.

Hikari matched that grin, "Challenge accepted!" And she was off, to what Asuka assumed, was the Clothing section. Asuka had decided to bring Five Thousand of Misato's gift and she intended to use it on something.

She speculated that Hikari would take some time so, she went and did her own exploration. After some walking around, she came across a large, fluffy blanket that was significantly more comfortable than those at the apartment, bonus was the fact it was only a Thousand Yen.

When she came back to find that her companion had yet to return, she found herself a bench and was fine with waiting for her.

Another couple of bonuses of the day was the fact that one, it was the weekend, and two, it was just late in the morning which meant that there was ample time to enjoy the rest of the day.

Amid her thoughts, she felt a gentle shake on shoulders, looking up, Hikari had a smile on her face, holding a small bag in her hands.

"I hope you like it…" She said, giving the parcel to her.

When Asuka took what was in the bag, she found a dark blue box and upon opening it, a golden pendant with the following inscribed unto it:

Best Friends 'till the end of Time

-Hikari

"Thanks, Hikari, this is really nice" Asuka beamed at her.

"Glad you enjoyed it then"

"By the way, can you help me put it on?" She then gave the one side to Hikari.

"Sure thing" And secured the Pendant around her neck.

"Ooo, it looks really nice on you!" Hikari exclaimed.

"You think so?" Asuka asked, too which Hikari nodded in affirmation.

"I guess I'll wear this for the rest of the day...speaking of which, you want to grab an early lunch? Since I know you have to leave earlier later"

"Sure, what do you want to eat though?" Hikari asked.

"Hmm, I'm in the mood for noodles I guess," She said.

"Great! I know an amazing place not so far from here" And she leads her by hand, as the pair darted off to the restaurant

Roughly Happening at the Same Time

Shinji was currently deep in thought at the apartment, listening to his SDAT. He had yet to get Asuka an actual Birthday present and this concerned him. Firstly was of course the possible wrath he could expect from her. He also felt that considering that he one, lived with her and two, had already been gifted by Misato; not giving her anything would seem like a terrible asshole-type move.

So after much pondering, he decided on what he wanted to do but before he could enact, he suddenly heard Misato call out, "Shinji-Kun! I don't smell lunch, what's up with that?" and he realized he had yet to start cooking, ushered a quick, "On it!" and went to make lunch, his present could wait after.

He just had to make sure he could give to Asuka before the end of the day…

Tokyo-3 Provincial Mall, Arcade Section, Sunday Afternoon

"Hey Hikari, about we hit the Arcade to finish the day?" Asuka, grinning with Malicious intent.

"Hmm, why not, my dad said I can stay a bit longer...though what are we playing?"

"Space Invaders, whoever scores the lowest as to buy the winner...desert!" Asuka exclaimed.

"Space Invaders? Sure thing" And they strode into the Arcade, paid for their tickets, and began hammering away at the machines. Suffice to say they were there for a decent amount of time, continuously checking on the other's score then exerting extra effort to outdo them. Eventually, it would reach with both of them calling a temporary truce, to which they would continue the challenge at a later date.

"Thanks for coming along today Hikari, today was Amazing," She said before the pair split up.

"It was no problem Asuka, I wouldn't mind doing this again," She said, her face slightly red. They gave each other a short again, bid their goodbyes, and went their separate ways.

Asuka then began here walk to the Bus station, only to find out they had to cancel rides, grumbling under her breath, she convinced herself not to rage since her day and been going well so far and instead began walking balk to the Apartment.

The Ikari-Katsuragi-Soryu Apartment, Sunday Afternoon

Shinji was currently halfway through his little project and was quite happy with what he had made so far. He had made something thoughtful yet meaningful considering what he had at his disposal. It had also helped that Misato had not asked what he was doing, thus not needing to explain himself.

Currently pouring his heart and soul unto the sheet of paper. When he looked up at the clock though, he realized that Asuka would be back soon and quickened his pace. By the time he finished writing, he heard Asuka announce that she was back and smiled at the work he had completed.

He was then called by Asuka which had him scrambling outside.

"Yeah?" He asked when he confronted her.

"What are you going to make for dinner?" She questioned.

"Well, I was planning on testing out a new Tempura recipe, did you want anything else?" She gave a thoughtful look, shook her head, and then went to her room.

Shinji did note that she seemed to be in a relatively better mood, compared to usual, which meant she enjoyed her day.

Putting those thoughts aside for the meanwhile, he set to work preparing the night's dinner and just hoped that Fate would smile on him, even in just this one instance.

Time passed surprisingly quickly and soon he had dinner out and everyone seated at the table. Dinner also went by, as usual, compliments from Misato, Criticism from Asuka, and small talk about her day were exchanged, nothing more than that though. Eventually, dinner was concluded and everyone dispersed to do their own things for the evening. Shinji of course did the dishes before he could do anything else, lest he have an increased workload tomorrow.

His Motivation was enough for him to finish scrubbing the dishes in less than half an hour. He soon double-checked to make sure that Misato would not be intruding and then went to fetch the letter he made.

Doubling back, he knocked on Asuka's door and was relieved when she allowed him inside.

"If it isn't the Third, what do you want?" She said, not even bothering to look up from the book she was reading.

Already Shinji was uncomfortable but willed himself to get it this over with.

"I-I haven't given you anything yet for Birthday s-so here," He said, offering the letter he had written. Asuka gingerly took it, scanned it over, then much to his surprise, gave it back.

"Read it," She said and when Shinji looked at her dumbfounded, she sighed and explained, "Baka, don't take this negatively, I want to know what you wrote to me but your handwriting is just…" And she made vague hand movements. Thankfully Shinji understood though she could swear he looked paler.

Building up his Courage, Shinji began to speak:

Happy Birthday, Asuka! I hope that today has been amazing for you!

I would like to just take a minute and I guess, appreciate you? You're incredibly intelligent and Confident, not to mention a significantly better pilot than me(Though I know you don't think of it that way), I also may have a slight crush on you.

I wish you a Happy Birthday once again, Shinji

Shinji had tried to say the second to the last sentence as quiet as he could, it didn't help that he wanted to bolt straight back to his room. When he looked up from the paper, he saw that Asuka was wiping away tears? Which couldn't possibly be good.

"Ba-Baka, I shouldn't be crying now," She said, but the usual tone of hers was long gone

"I, uh, I can leave if you want?" He offered, to which she declined.

"No I want to talk about the letter," She said, wiping the last tears and letting him sit beside her.

"Shinji-I...how do I put this, thank you, first of all, that was a heartwarming letter, secondly, thank you again for saying that I'm the better pilot, but I can't accept that, considering we're practically equal and…" Before she continued, she took in a deep breath, "I-I may also like you" Her voice quiet, but Shinji's face redder than her EVA.

"DON'T THINK OF IT THAT WAY!" She immediately reprimanded, soon silence befell the two as they were at a loss for words in their current situation. In this silence, Asuka scooted closer to him and wrapped one of her arms around him, resting her head on his shoulder.

"So are we now...a couple?" Shinji asked, watching his choice of words.

"I guess…I kinda hate to ask you this but…" She said, blushing.

"But?" He echoed.

"You mind sleeping here tonight?" She asked, yearning to be at least held.

Thankfully Shinji obliged but before he could get up to grab an extra pillow, she held him and told him to take off his shirt.

"We're not going to do anything weird, just take it off" She hissed and he followed. She then pulled him down to her bed and nestled her head on his now bare chest.

"See Baka, nothing weird"

"I-I guess"

"And don't think I forgot when you tried to kiss me," She said before sleep drifted her away shortly after, leaving Shinji confused and bewildered.

Hope you everyone enjoyed this because I certainly enjoyed writing it.

And I also wasn't that late, sorta. Oh and before I forget, Misato's Birthday is on the Ninth, so expect a fic for that.

That's all for now, stay safe everyone! : )
