Deepest Affections

Chapter Seven

Menaces

It had only been a week, however, Sarada felt that the days had passed in a dizzying yet drawn-out pace. As she walked down the stone halls, the sound of footsteps echoed loudly in her ears. When she had arrived, it was only her own she would hear. Light and quiet. As the weeks had passed, it was not only her own footsteps, but a louder, firmer crunch behind her slowly became the norm.

The lady looked over her shoulder and smiled subtly at the pale-faced guard. He smiled back, took a brief pause, and then gave her a slight bow. His boots pressed on the stone walkways, the hilt of his sword clanking against his metal armor. It was a sound that Sarada had come to associate Boruto with at first, for he was never alone. But now, Sarada had become accustomed to a soldier's firm steps following her light ones, with or without her prince's company.

The attention she had been receiving was overwhelming but anticipated. Her father had spoken to her to be wary of the nobles, after all. Ever since the price had so proudly announced during one supper that he wished for his lady to be seated next to him, it was followed with whispers—whispers that he quickly silenced and explained it was only natural for a man to want to be near the lady he was courting.

More whispers, clattering and staring from every head with eyes in the room ensued. A lump had formed in her throat, one that she tried to force down with some wine. The dinner hall soon settled when the queen entered with the princess, both of whom acknowledged Sarada seated so close to their family. Having Boruto's hand on hers settled her nerves, and she focused on his and Himawari's conversation throughout their meal. It was no surprise that some of the nobles who were seated close tried to join in as well, but her attention was always brought back to the prince and princess. She was uncertain how this would look, but she tried not to think about it so, as her prince had so sweetly reassured her during their evening stroll.

The gifts that arrived in her room were no longer just from Boruto, but from other nobles as well. Well-tailored dresses, jewelry, and books—even fruits and flowers—were coming into her chambers on a daily basis. In the first few days, Sarada happily accepted, but once the nobles who gifted her the items caught wind of her delight, their demeanor about her changed. Her father advised her to return them, as what the nobles wanted in return was her favor—but in truth, it was the crown's favor they wanted. Her prince's disdain was something she did not want to bring on to the nobles, so she had told him that she thought nothing much of them, then did as her father advised.

Her governess returned the gifts and refused anyone who would deny it, as well as those who insisted she receive the gifts they claimed to have chosen just for her. The only ones Sarada accepted were from Boruto and her friends. It was no trouble to accept, as they handed them to her personally.

It did not stop at the gifts, for the words and compliments were far more overwhelming.

"Lady Sarada!" A noble lady bowed lowly. "You are looking so lovely today. Oh, as you always do!" She laughed and placed a hand on her chest, seemingly taken by her.

"My Lady you are too kind. You are also looking well." Sarada bowed and smiled, but quickly turned to leave as she spotted a group of noble ladies walking their way. Their brows lifted high on their foreheads as they tilted their chins to observe her.

There were times wherein Sarada could not decide who vexed her more—the ones who sought her favor or the ones who thought that she sought favor.

She swallowed and turned down the hall, walking faster.

Mitsuki easily matched her pace, and soon, they were alone in a hall that was empty save for the two of them. "My Lady, if you wish for me to punish them, all you need to do is say the word."

Sarada ceased and turned to face the guard. She bit her lower lip, trying to stop the grin on her lips from growing to no avail. "Hush, Mitsuki. You mustn't think or say that."

His brows furrowed. "It is what I am here for, My Lady. Prince Boruto would have my head if he heard I did not defend you."

It was not a physical threat—one that Sarada thought was the sole reason why Boruto insisted at least one of his personal guards stay with her at all times. But the lady understood what he meant. Boruto did not have any patience or mercy for anyone who slandered her name.

"It was not a threat, truthfully I did not even hear what they said, neither do I care." She shrugged and waved at Mitsuki, wanting him to walk alongside her. Among Boruto's guards, she was the fondest of Mitsuki. His candid personality and brutal honesty were refreshing for her.

"Perhaps, but your shoulders tense and you flee when you see them."

She nodded. She wished she did not care, but she did. It was painful for people to speculate that she had seduced Boruto, and only wanted his favor—that she was ambitious for thinking she could be queen. The latter was not even something she had dreamt to be. For her days in Raven Hill, she often thought that living a life without consequence would have been far better—better than even being a wife. Certainly better than being a queen.

Truthfully, she only wished to spend her days with Boruto. To read to her heart's content and support his reign. The throne was rightfully his, and although he often spoke as if he did not care, she knew he did. He cared for his people and kingdom, and there was no one else Sarada thought of that would be better to be king than him. Boruto was an idiot at times, though, but that is what Shikadai was for. All of their friends were being groomed to support Boruto, and their loyalty was truly unrivaled.

"Does something else worry you, My Lady?" Mitsuki matched her slow pace as they walked.

"Many plague my thoughts," she admitted quietly. "I am still uncertain how to feel about Prince Kagura arriving—which will be any day now. However, the first princess to meet Boruto will arrive soon, too. I am uncertain for whom do I worry most."

"Perhaps worry about the kingdom, my Lady. I would not be surprised if the prince offends the princess for sending her back home too quickly." He chuckled.

The lady scoffed at that and shook her head. "He must do nothing of the sort. I have faith he will not." Or else he will have my wrath.

"Mm. He would not want you to slap him again."

Sarada laughed. "No, he would not. He tells me you and Shinki are still surprised."

"Indeed." Mitsuki nodded. "I am still vexed, My Lady."

She nodded. "It must be, for I would be the last you three would think of to hurt the prince."

Mitsuki's usual quick wit and responses were gone. They took a few more steps together and he looked at his feet, brows creasing together. When he finally lifted his amber eyes to look at her, he spoke carefully, "You are the only one who can hurt him, Lady Sarada."

Her walking ceased and she looked at the guard with wide eyes. His smile was small, but she knew he spoke of a truth he believed in with all his heart. Deep down in her own, Sarada knew this to be true, all because she was aware that Boruto was the only one who could hurt her, too.

The low hum of chattering floated to their ears. Mitsuki gave her his usual smile before walking a few paces ahead, taking on a guarded posture. His strides were fluid, yet confident, each step was firm and certain. Sarada kept her gaze at the back of his head as she chewed her lower lip, letting the thoughts bounce around her head.

They have finally reached her mother's clinic, and as usual, there were people sitting on benches, patiently waiting for their turn to be seen. Mitsuki announced Sarada's presence to the aide, who quickly bowed and scurried back inside to inform Sakura.

She clasped her hands together and gave the patients an apologetic smile. They had been waiting since early morn for their turn, and yet she would be granted an audience in only a few moments. Sakura was her mother, but at times, Sarada felt uncomfortable whenever she was reminded of the injustice and disparity of classes that their society had.

Mitsuki waited outside, as Sarada was shown to her mother's office.

"Good morning, Sarada," Sakura greeted her, stepping closer to stroke her cheek in an affectionate manner. "I've been meaning to have a visit with you."

Sarada leaned into her mother's hand and gave her a warm smile. "I have been meaning to come and visit you, however, I feared I would bother you and your patients." It was still early, and surely, her mother would not summon her to the clinic unless the matter she wished to speak about was her health. "Will you examine my health?"

The doctor hummed, a soft smile on her face as she turned away from Sarada and walked over to her desk. She sat down there, her eyes following her hands as she sorted through a variety of bottles of all shapes and sizes.

"This is an herbal remedy made by my own hands. It's highly effective and side effects are minimal to none. Take one cap full each time before you get intimate…" Sakura cleared her throat and then added, "with the prince."

Her mother's words floated to her ear however Sarada took a moment longer to process what she had said. When it finally dawned on her, her whole face turned cherry red. "M-Mama!" Her hands flew to her face, hiding it but to no avail. Had she known all this time? How did she know? Who told her? "M—Mama we—I…" A lump formed in her throat. Embarrassment and fear bubbled in her chest, making it hard for her to breathe.

"Now, there is no need to go worrying so much. I understand and I am not upset with you. I just want you to be careful. It is my duty as a mother to make sure you are educated when it comes to simple things like contraception."

Although she knew her mother was sincere and only wanted to assure her health and safety, it did not allow the heat in her cheeks to subside in the least. Her hand slipped down to cover her mouth, onyx eyes still wide, feeling shocked that her mother would know, or perhaps if she did not, had anticipated she and Boruto would be intimate. Sakura was nowhere near like the traditional and conservative ladies of the court. As a doctor, she was always thinking ahead and did so objectively. Taking in a shaky breath, Sarada held her palm up to hold the bottle. "Thank you." It was barely a whisper.

"You are not a girl any longer, darling. You are a lady now… a lady whom has had a prince promise himself to her. You two cherish each other… it reminds me of how I cherish your papa and I respect it. You already know that you both have my blessing, just be mindful, Sarada. You and Boruto both."

The bottle seemed to have gained weight with every word her mother said. Sarada held such deep affections for the prince, and she knew he did as well. Having her mother openly grant her blessing was enough to soothe her worrisome heart. Sarada smiled and embraced her mother tenderly. "Thank you, Mama. We will."

As her arms wound around her daughter's waist in return, Sakura smiled, cheek pressed to Sarada's shoulder. "I love you. I am always proud of you and I know better than anyone how amazing you are. You have a wise mind and a kind soul… you are perfect for the prince and he is perfect for you. I only wish you both the best."

Sakura's words moistened her eyes. Sarada sighed and relaxed into her mother's arms. There were no other words she could tell her mother to show her gratitude. All she could do was give her a light squeeze, and promise her that she would be careful. The thought alone of sharing her intimate experiences with her mother frightened her however now that it was clear Sakura would listen and help her without judgment made Sarada smile.

Things have changed for her in the little time that she had spent in the palace. She used to be a lady who thought that living a life without consequence would be far better, and easier than being a wife. Now that Boruto had brought his intentions for her to her family, and to the entire court, Sarada wanted nothing more than to prove that she was worthy. Her friends and family always assured her that she was. However, if the court thought that Sarada would only sit pretty and produce heirs for the kingdom, they were gravely mistaken.

The bottle was placed in a pouch that Sarada held close to her person as she departed the clinic. The light blush was still on her cheeks as she clutched on the pouch. She would have to speak to Boruto regarding the talk she just had with her mother. Mitsuki remained in front of her, leading the way to Boruto's chambers. All the nobles who had seen her on the way all bowed and greeted her, to which she nodded and smiled in return. Their prying eyes darted to her hands, making her hold on to it a little tighter.

Colorful flags and tapestries were being hung on the walls. Prince Kagura's arrival was expected and all the preparations were slowly coming together. A ball would be held in his honor, one to commence a day after, ensuring he had ample rest before the merry-making would assume. Balls excited Sarada, as it meant being able to dance—with Boruto, in particular. Mitsuki led Sarada to another hall, and it was quieter in this wing, as it was where the prince and princess reside. No decorations would be put up in this area, and fewer people were around, bringing her comfort.

Mitsuki opened the door to Boruto's chamber's, before promptly entering and bowing. "Lady Sarada, for you, your majesty."

Sarada stopped a few steps behind Mitsuki before finally stepping forward and bowing to greet him. "My prince."

"Milady." Boruto grinned, quickly getting up from his seat to bow properly to her. He was not alone, Denki standing just at his side. The shorter man hurried to bow as well, looking suddenly flustered. "Denki, you may go now."

"B-but—"

"But?" Boruto repeated before Denki could go any further, turning to him with a raised brow and a look cold enough to make him take a step back.

He looked slightly panicked, but he still felt concerned enough to bring up the schedule once more. "My Prince, the schedule, it is—"

"It can wait. Mitsuki, see him out."

Sarada gave Denki an apologetic smile and bowed her head at him when he exited the room, Mitsuki close behind him. Once the door clicked and they were alone, Sarada turned to face her prince. "Are you certain your schedule can wait? I would not mind waiting until you had finished." She giggled.

"Of course it can," he assured her with a smile and a gentle grasp of her dainty hand. "You are here now, all else can wait until you are finished with me."

The lady hummed and leaned close to him as she spoke. "I am afraid Sir Denki will never get a hold of you if he has to wait until I am." She laughed. "I wished to speak to you. Mama called me to her clinic earlier, and I had thought nothing of it." Sarada shrugged a shoulder up. "The most I had imagined was that she wished to examine my health, but instead, she gave me quite the fright."

"Fright?" The prince's brows rose high, his blue eyes studying her carefully. "Are you ill?"

"Not at all." Sarada reached for her pouch and pulled at the string, carefully opening it until the top of the bottle peeked out. She held on to the neck and pulled it out, allowing Boruto to look at it. It was fairly small, and the liquid inside was red with a slightly clear consistency. "Would you care to take a guess what this is for?"

"Some vitamins perhaps?" He suggested, unsure of what the bottle could contain. "I do not see the need, you are healthy and vibrant."

Her teeth sank into her lower lip, containing her grin. "Yes, we both are. I suppose you can say this is also for you…"

"For me?" He looked even more confused upon hearing that. "What ever for?"

"For…" dark eyes shifted quickly to his pants and then back up to his face. She waited until he understood what she had insinuated.

"What are you saying?" Boruto gasped and turned as if to shield himself from her and protect his dignity. "I have no problem there, Sarada, which you should know well by now."

Sarada laughed and wrapped her arms around his middle, pressing her cheek to his back. "That's exactly what I mean, Boruto. Mother knows that we have been… intimate."

"Gracious, Sarada. You told your mother without a care in the world? Just when Lord Sasuke gave me his blessing. Is this not lovely? He will have my head overnight."

"My goodness, if you were not to be a king, perhaps a theater artist is what you should consider." She rolled her eyes but laughed again. "I did not tell her. I have a feeling that she and Papa were a lot like us when they were younger." The image of her parents being young and in love warmed her heart, however, when it morphed to their more intimate moments, she shook her head from side to side as if to eradicate the thought immediately. "She did not even wait for me to tell her… she just knew," Sarada whispered. Perhaps they really were not as subtle, or her mother simply knew everything. "I do not think Papa knows. If he did, you truly would not be here anymore."

"My word," the prince huffed, resting a hand over his pounding heart. "I do not know what to think. So, this liquid medicine. What is it?"

"Mama called it contraception. That I should take a cap of it before we… you know." Her cheeks flushed just thinking about it—how bold and unbothered her mother was to even give her such a thing.

"A precautionary method so that you do not bear my child before we are wed. Lady Sakura is a genius." The prince snickered tauntingly as he looked from the bottle in her hands, to her. "I do wish to do things properly, even if I do want you, always. Please bear with me."

Sarada smiled at him. His eagerness was always appreciated. Being swept away by his charm and passion had been something she learned to allow for herself. "Mama was specific that it would be used for intimate moments with you." She giggled and cupped his cheek with her hand. "I do not tolerate you at all, my prince. I am always happy to be with you."

"Did I not say that your mother was a genius? To be sure the lady knows if you are being intimate with anyone, it is I." His lips puckered as he pouted and averted his eyes away from her.

Sarada gently lifted his face for him to look at her. "Surely you know my heart only belongs to you."

"I certainly do, but I will not be satisfied until everyone knows it."

"Oh? Are you jealous?" Sarada grinned. "Perish the thought, Boruto. There is no one else I adore as much as you." He had always been stubborn, even as a child. She knew it to be true that he would not rest until he got what he wanted. It was troublesome at times, but she also admired his tenacity. Deciding to change the topic, Sarada withdrew her hand from his cheek and placed the bottle back into the pouch as she spoke, "Did Sir Denki discuss Prince Kagura's arrival? The palace is certainly looking lively with all the preparations. Do you have business to do with him while he is here?"

"I am not looking forward to his visit and you are well aware. Father says a neighboring princess will be visiting as well. I feel as though he wishes to keep us apart from one another."

"Oh." Having princesses arrive to meet Boruto should not have come as a surprise to her. He had told her and she had been anticipating their arrival, but she did not think they would be arriving so soon. Prince Kagura was visiting, and she thought that he would have been the only person she would need to be wary of. "When we are both unoccupied by matters of consequence, we can always come and see each other, my prince. All you need to do is summon me."

He hummed, smiling approvingly at her words. "As I will, and you may have any guard call upon me for you as well."

Without a doubt, Sarada knew she could call upon Boruto and he would come rushing to her side. Although she knew that his heart belonged to her, the looming fear of being pit against another woman for his affections made her stomach twist. She could only imagine how Boruto must have felt, knowing that his dear cousin would arrive and try his best to win over the lady who held his heart. She would not allow herself to be swayed, as she was certain Boruto would not as well.

"Are you not to be Prince Kagura's company while he is here?" Inojin looked at his friend, who did not do the same for him. His emerald eyes stayed glued on the chessboard, thinking of his next move.

"Yes, that seems to be the case. Father insists it will be a good learning experience for me. If we are speaking truthfully, I believe he simply does not want to bother." Shikadai sighed and finally picked a piece to move.

Inojin whined, seeing now he was pushed to a corner. "Hopefully the prince is a good match at chess."

"I suppose." Shikadai shrugged. "He arrives tomorrow and I will ride at daybreak to meet him by the shore."

"Boruto will not be in attendance?" Chocho asked as she munched on a scone. "I heard he and the prince were fairly close the last time he had come to visit."

"They share no hatred for each other." Shikadai finally tore his gaze away from the board to look at the lady. "The rumor that Kagura wishes to usurp Boruto is absurd… even if, it seems the king still wants to have a show of strength, and reiterate Boruto's claim and support for the throne."

"King Yagura is rich, is he not?" Inojin put his piece down, far more intrigued with the conversation. "Kirigakure is small but rich due to their trade. Their naval ships are also unparalleled."

"Their influence has dwindled." Chocho shook her hand in the air, dismissing the artist. "If you ask me, having Sarada marry him will be a great advantage to further their knowledge and gain some allies. Surely Sarada will not sail on her own. Her father's court is filled with geniuses. Those who wish to curry favor with her will come in a drop of a hat!"

Inojin smirked. "You speak as if you are not familiar with the prince or the lady." He crossed his arms across his chest, the game of chess completely forgotten. "This kingdom—Boruto—will declare war before Sarada even steps foot on a boat to leave."

Shikadai dragged a long and heavy sigh before rubbing the back of his neck. "'Tis troublesome and although I understand the king's reasoning, I still cannot fathom how he allowed this all to happen. Keeping the prince happy also secures the king's reign, not that he would do that to his own father." He paused, an irritated scowl escaped his lips as his friends did not even agree. "Forget what I said. The prince has many supporters, and I doubt they will all come to arms if he wishes to marry Sarada. Although even if this is true, Boruto has been pouting all day."

"He is rather popular. Both amongst the nobles and masses." The lady shrugged, then licked her lips at the sound of potential gossip. "Is this about the princess who is to come? Do tell who she is."

Sighing again, Shikadai resigned that they will be unable to finish their match. "There are a few that the king has chosen, the one who will arrive soon is from a small kingdom. Although small, they are rich in lumber and farmlands. I hear she also has a wonderful singing voice."

"Oh get on with it and tell me the name!" Chocho sniffed.

Inojin laughed and looked at his friend. "May I take a guess? Is this the kingdom close to my family's border—The kingdom of Suzumeno?"

"The very one," Shikadai smirked. "I have not heard as much about her, but she sounds lovely and quite meek. I doubt Boruto will even pay her any mind, neither will she take offense. I am quite sure that prying ears have already told the tale of a potential Uchiha Queen."

Chocho rolled her eyes. "Perhaps she can capture the fancy of another Lord while she is here. If I recall my lessons correctly, the Suzumeno's land is no larger than the three of our family's combined."

"Quite so." Shikadai nodded. "Our lands are quite far on the edge of Konoha but spread wide into the forests and valleys. Their land is quite similar and recently has occupied a portion of the river to the south. Their growth is quite promising and it will increase our border. Her father is also quite the diplomat."

"Widening our land sounds so romantic." Chocho looked heavenward. "The one and only reason to marry, I am certain."

Inojin and Shikadai threw their heads back and laughed.

"Do not pretend as if you will not consider the boons that come with marriage." Inojin snorted. "Not everyone can be as fortunate to truly marry for love."

"It is not in everyone's fortune," Shikadai nodded and continued, "However I am sure the Prince will simply not accept what the fates have in store for him. He will take it all into his own hands. Watch."

"I have no doubt." Chocho sniffed. "I cannot wait to see what will unfold. Perhaps I will even make a friend of the princess."

"Perhaps it is beneficial if we all do." Inojin shrugged. "We shall see."

Light steps were overpowered with the sound of boots and armor clinking, and crunching on the ground. The sound of horns and drums floated in the air, drowning out the clatter and murmuring of onlookers. Sarada clasped her hands before her and kept her eyes on the ground. In her peripheral vision, silver shone, making her take a look at her right, where Shinki marched. When she turned to her left, was Mitsuki. The lady lifted her chin, and saw nothing but the Uzumaki crest, as she stared at Kawaki's back.

He looked at her over his shoulder. Before he could take a step to allow her to view the oncoming horses, Sarada held her hand out and stopped him. She did not wish to be seen, however, her curiosity did get the better of her. She peeked over to the middle, where the path cleared. Boruto and his family were waiting. The prince's eyes scanned the crowd and landed on hers. He gave her a warm smile and she returned it.

The carriages stopped in the middle. Sarada broke eye contact with the prince in order to observe. There were lords and ladies who wore red, black, and yellow-colored frocks. The style was different from what Sarada was accustomed to, as she had known nothing but heavy silk and velvet, while their visitors wore lighter looking clothes, spun from a fabric that was dull in color yet structured to emphasize their physique. The ladies' skirts were different, shining and exuberant and easily bent to the motion of their legs.

Four lords and two ladies stood and waited for the last carriage. There were barely any similarities with their features; Sarada quickly came to the conclusion that they were not related to each other. However, they all did have one thing in common, they looked feral. As if a single misstep would cost you your head by their own hand. Sarada was not one to be intimidated but there was a certain type of fear that the Prince's company evoked in her.

The last carriage finally stopped and the door opened. The lady expected to see the prince dressed in a similar fashion, in red, black, and yellow. However, he was dressed in green and lavender. The prince had sandy blond hair that fell above his shoulders and light-colored eyes. Even from Sarada's position, she could clearly see they shone like amethysts. Surely having brilliant eyes was something that ran in Boruto's family.

Kagura taking the lead as he strode down the stone pathway towards the Royal family. The lords and ladies in his company followed after him, as did Shikadai and his small party. The atmosphere was silent, the murmurs from the other nobles floating around. Sarada could only grasp a few words and phrases. Comments about his company, and how charming the prince was in comparison.

Finally, Prince Kagura had reached the Royal family and bowed low. His smile was dazzling, like the sun. He exuded a certain charisma and charm unlike anything Sarada had ever seen, and he had not even parted his lips to speak just yet.

She was pulled out of her daze when Kawaki shifted on his feet, studying her face. "I am alright." Kawaki lifted his brow. That was not what he inquired, and the lady's cheeks colored as she should have known this. It was simply her guilt that made her respond in such a way.

The crowd began speaking louder, and the fanfare started once more. Sarada had missed seeing and hearing the foreign prince exchange his pleasantries with the king and queen. Now, he was already speaking with Boruto and Himawari. The three of them were smiling, and looking happy—excited—even, to have his company. His entourage followed suit, and soon, Shinki was urging Sarada to come and follow, not wanting to be swallowed by the other nobles.

She followed the guards back inside the palace, and she was glad she had them to keep the crowd away from her. The space allowed her to breathe easy, but her calm did not last long, as one of her father's servants had stopped in front of Kawaki, and halted him, in favor of relaying a message from her father. Kawaki did not look pleased to be told what to do, however, he stepped aside when Sarada inquired why has her father called for her.

"The Uchihas have been invited for a private audience with the Royal family and the Prince Kagura." The servant bowed. "The king wishes your presence in the Queen's private garden within an hour."

"I thought the prince would wish to rest—" Sarada held her tongue and shook her head, accepting the message and then dismissed the servant. "Tell my father I will be there."

She then turned her attention to Shinki, who kept his gaze forward. "Would you please inquire with the prince if he would want my company?"

The answer was already obvious, and the guard made it known by lifting his brow at her. However, instead of speaking, he only nodded and bowed, before leaving her side to go seek her prince.

"Thank you. I will be in my chambers."

Kawaki remained in front of Sarada, while Mitsuki moved to follow behind her. They both marched to her room, and stayed stationed outside while they waited for Shinki's return.

Thankfully, her chambers were empty for the moment, even her governess was away. The quiet gave her some room to think for herself, and to calm her racing heart. Prince Kagura was even more handsome than the rumors painted him to be. In fact, he looked like a rather charming gentleman. She decided this was worse, as it would have been easier to turn down a man who was ill-mannered, and brought her displeasure. His company appeared to be intimidating but he looked nothing short of welcoming. The way Boruto and Himawari smiled and laughed with him also brought upon a sense of warmth to her chest.

She swallowed and remembered that she had promised her parents she would be good and humor the prince. Surely she would be kind and polite, but also reminded herself of what she had told Boruto—there was no one else for her than him—and this was not going to change, no matter how charming prince Kagura was, or how insistent the king would be.

Her quiet moments to her thoughts were disrupted when Mitsuki walked into her chambers, announcing that the prince wishes to see her in his chambers as soon as she sees fit. It only took her but a moment to straighten her skirt and make her way to him. The halls were littered with nobles, scrambling around to see where the foreign prince might be, and talks about the private audience in the Queen's gardens made its rounds. The attendees of the event were still unknown, but as Sarada passed, She could not help but feel all of their eyes on her, scrutinizing and guts twisting at the thought that she would be invited but not them.

Sarada kept her gaze ahead, even if that meant only looking at the Uzumaki crest on Kawaki's back. Soon enough, her thoughts drifted to how her life would change should Boruto marry her and become queen. The more scenarios that played in her head, the clearer it was that the life without consequence she once thought of for herself would be a faraway dream.

It was Kawaki who announced their arrival with two quick knocks on Boruto's door with the back of his hand. When called to enter, Kawaki only opened the door and stepped aside, allowing Sarada room to walk by. The prince turned from where he'd been staring out over his balcony, smile as bright and dashing as it ever was. He regarded her with warmth and those soft blue eyes that she adored.

"Milady," he spoke with a tone so tender, closing the distance between them and taking her hand in his. He said nothing more until he'd placed a kiss on her knuckles and then locked his eyes on hers. "Are you feeling unwell? You appear to have something plaguing you."

The more time they had spent together, the better the prince was at reading her emotions. For the most part, she was rather thankful. However, it only unnerved her to know it was written all over her face. "I am anxious to meet your cousin. His company also seems rather… intimidating."

Boruto clicked his tongue at her admission, but he continued to admire her softly. "Worry not, Sarada. Kagura is a kind man. There is nothing intimidating about him in the least. He will be a perfect gentleman, or he will answer to my blade."

As amusing as it was to know that her prince would always come to her defense, it was also one of the reasons fear resided in her heart. She tried to give him a warning look, but her eyes shone with worry more than a threat. "The prince himself does look to be rather charming, it was the others I was referring to. I just… I fear I will do or say something to upset your cousin and your father." Doing either was the last thing she wanted.

"Please, do not stress yourself over such things. There is not a single thing you could say to cause any upset. If you are worried about the need for you to decline any proposals from him, you worry for no reason. I will ensure he knows my place with you."

Her cheeks flushed. It was her main concern, and having the prince come all the way from his kingdom for her but come home rejected was something she imagined a royal would not be accustomed to, nor accept. "I… I do worry for that," she whispered, hating to have to admit it. "I do not wish to waste his time."

"Nonsense, he will not see it in such a way." With a soft sigh, he released her hand and leaned in to kiss her cheek gently instead. "You should not concern yourself so much, Sarada. Have faith in me, if nothing else. I will always take care of you."

Sarada sighed and relented to her prince. "If you speak of him so kindly, then I have no other choice but to believe it will be as such. I do hope he and I could be friends, though."

"You are to be my queen, of course, he will strive to have your favor, only not your hand. Kagura will not cross me."

"It is unwise to anger your host." Sarada laughed. "I have heard from Shikadai that you two are quite fond of each other." Her hands stroked his chest comfortingly, a soft smile on her lips as she looked into his eyes. "I hope to see your bond while he remains here."

"Ah. I intend to spar with him while he is visiting, it has been a while. He is impressively skilled." Boruto did not speak ill of his cousin. He even looked pleased to have him there, despite the reason. Boruto was not worried. "I would send invitation for you to oversee, but I fear you may become upset."

Her lower lip jutted out into a pout. "I would like to watch. I imagine everyone else would, too." Even if she was sure she would be upset, Sarada did not want to miss the chance to watch her prince in his element. "I promise I will remain where I am seated." She smiled.

The prince chuckled deeply at that and then stole a kiss from her lips. "I do not know if I can trust you on that, but I will invite you nonetheless, if only because I want to show off."

The lady snorted, not caring for how unladylike she sounded. She lightly flicked his nose with her finger. "I should have known this was your intention!"

"There is nothing wrong for a man to wish to show his strengths to the woman he loves." Boruto huffed and pouted at her, then turned uncertain, eyes shifting around her face as he asked, "Is there?"

She giggled at his silliness. "Fanning your tail like a peacock, in hopes to attract a mate, hmm? I suppose there is nothing wrong, my prince, but you already know I am yours." The humor that danced in her eyes was replaced with fondness. Her hand cupped his cheek and stroked her thumb lightly across his whiskers.

"You are," he confirmed with a pleased hum, happily winding his arms around her slim waist. "Everyone will know it, and that goes doubly for Kagura. Regardless of his reasons for visiting or what my father says, I will not hesitate to tell him."

The prince meant exactly what he said. He had no intentions of allowing Kagura to believe he had even the slightest opportunity of wooing Sarada. Her heart already belonged to Boruto, and Boruto's belonged to her. Long before the welcoming party, Boruto had set his mind to make his standing with Sarada known to his cousin. He was a fair and just prince, and he did think highly of his cousin, so it was best to be completely transparent with him.

When the hour of the party arrived, Boruto entered the ballroom with Shinki by his side. Kawaki and Mitsuki were both with Sarada, at his order, and while his father insisted there be no need for him to carry his blade, the prince refused to show without it. A man could not consider himself a man if he were ill-prepared for any possible occurrences. No, it was not likely that anything detrimental would transpire during the party, but on the off chance something did, Boruto would be ready to defend himself and his princess.

Himawari was in high spirits and feeling exceedingly well. As he marched towards the throne, Boruto spotted her seated by their mother, the brightest of smiles adorning her face, and it melted him. Seeing her feeling so well was a relief so lightening to him that the prince felt as if he was truly breathing after a long time trapped beneath strong, stormy sea currents. She was giggling over something Kagura was saying to her, and Boruto reached them just as Kagura offered the princess a pearlescent seashell that was the size of her palm. She accepted it enthusiastically as Kagura explained he'd come across it the day before leaving his homeland.

"This is beautiful, thank you very much," she said to Kagura, blue eyes flitting to Boruto as he came to kneel before her with a smile so bright it rivaled hers.

"You are beautiful," he pointed out, making her laugh again. "That is quite a magnificent shell." Boruto playfully poked her nose and then rose to his feet, turning to face Kagura whose smile never waned. "Welcome, again, Kagura."

"Thank you, cousin." Kagura smiled warmly, and extended a hand towards him, then rested it on his shoulder. "You two have grown so much, and well. I was just telling Himawari I am pleased to see that her health has improved remarkably."

"Ah. Doctor Uchiha is truly a godsend. It fills me with joy to see her in such high spirits and glowing so healthily." The prince grinned and looked down at his sister, winking at her.

"I have been feeling much better. I have also enjoyed the outside more as of late—and painting."

Boruto hummed, blue eyes shifting around until they landed on Inojin. He was all the way across the grand room, speaking with Chocho, but Boruto was keenly aware that he had been spending a fair amount of time with Himawari.

"Inojin has been a kind tutor, I hope."

"Of course!" Himawari nodded excitedly. "He is quite patient and has the most gentle hands. He really is skilled—possibly even better than his father."

"Oh, you think so?" Boruto chuckled and then turned his gaze back to Kagura who was still smiling, content just listening to the two converse. "So, you traveled well. I do hope the weather was fair. I've anticipated your arrival, perhaps tomorrow we could meet for a simple spar. I would love to gauge your growth since our last encounter."

The prince laughed and withdrew his hand to rest on the sword on his hip. "It is much like you to get right into the amusement, Boruto. I would be delighted."

"Excellent. I take my training much more seriously these days. You have beaten me before, but I have complete confidence that this time, I will be the one beating you."

Kagura laughed once more and nodded his head. "I have no doubt you will give me a hard time, but we shall see who will come out the victor, for I also have been doing my fair share of training." Although his tone was soft, his eyes glinted with challenge, as Kagura also loved a good spar. "As you mentioned you have a new doctor, I will take this as permission not to hold back as well."

"I will hold back neither, so prepare yourself." Boruto grinned at him and the two laughed, the cheerful sound only fading once Boruto spotted Sarada approaching.

She appeared as beautiful as she always did, a bit of her long hair pinned back so that it did not fall into her face, loose curls hanging down her back. Her dress was fitting, only flaring out below her waist and it was long, all the way to her ankles. She smelled divine too, and the prince wanted so badly to pull her into his arms and kiss her until his lips grew tired. Unfortunately, he could not.

"Milady," he greeted her with a bow, smiling his most affectionate smile as she curtsied in return.

"My prince." She smiled warmly at him, before turning her gaze to greet his cousin and sister. "Princess you are looking well. Welcome, Prince Kagura."

"Thank you, Sarada. You are too kind. You look beautiful."

Boruto nodded in agreement with Himawari's comment and did not hesitate to say, "Indeed, you do."

"Thank you for the warm welcome, my lady." Kagura's eyes drank her in, the smile on his face never wavering. "I believe we have not met." He stepped down and away from Himawari's throne to be on the same footing as the lady and gave her hand a kiss.

The action was nothing more than a simple endearment, perfectly acceptable, but knowing the reason behind Kagura's visit had Boruto's jaw tensing. He was displeased, but he kept his mouth shut, lips tight.

Sarada's cheeks flushed lightly at his attention, but quickly recovered herself and gave him her name. "I am Sarada Uchiha. Lord Sasuke's daughter. I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Prince Kagura."

"Sarada," he repeated her name and grinned a little wider, thumb brushing tenderly over the back of her hand. "I thought I would have to wait a little longer to meet you, but I am pleased to have met you so soon."

Boruto winced slightly when the princess gave him a sharp elbow to his ribs. She really had gained her strength back. He frowned at her, wondering what on earth she expected him to do without causing a terrible scene at his cousin's party, which he was dangerously close to doing.

After a few seconds, his feet moved even if he had no plan to do anything, and before he could stop himself, Boruto had taken Sarada's hand in his. "Perhaps we should allow you to meet some of your other guests," Boruto said simply, though he knew his eyes were as threatening as they met Kagura's as his annoyance was strong. It could not be helped. He could not say anything in his regards to Sarada and their relationship, but he could allude to it.

If his cousin found his actions offensive, he did not show it in the slightest. Kagura's eyes shifted from Boruto to Sarada, then back to Boruto. His lips curved upward in a smile, straightened his posture, then nodded his head. "You are right, dear cousin." He looked back to Himawari and walked over to her, offering his arm. "It would delight me if you would accompany me, princess."

Himawari smiled brightly and slowly stood, accepting his arm gratefully. "Why, thank you."

They left together and Boruto stood where he was, trying not to sulk. Sarada was watching him and he knew he had been rude, but he had a right to be.

"Forgive me, I just could not bear to stand idly by and watch as he fawned over you."

"You must ask for your cousin's forgiveness, not mine." Although she meant to chide him, Sarada could not help but giggle and stroke his hand in hers. "He seems polite, and fond of you and your sister."

The prince nodded his head in agreement, feeling slightly guilted. "It is true, Kagura is very kind and I am quite fond of him as well… but I am not fond of his interest in you."

She nodded, understanding him well. Dark eyes softened as she regarded him tenderly. "I know, Boruto. If another princess were to do that to you, I would be greatly displeased as well."

"I am glad you understand." He smiled then and lifted her hand to rub it against his cheek. "I will try not to let my emotions get the better of me. Besides… I know that you are mine."

"As you are mine," Sarada confirmed. "Will you keep me standing here, or are you going to ask me to dance, Boruto?" She teased.

"My apologies." The prince took a step back to offer her a more formal bow, and then his hand. "May I have the honor of your first dance this evening?"

Sarada curtsied and placed her hand in his. "You may have me for the whole evening if it would please you, my prince." As much as she loved to dance, dancing with Boruto, and Boruto alone would delight her the most.

And he was beyond grateful for her hand, for her company, and most of all, for her.

...

Boruto did not expect his father to be so thoughtless. Just when he thought everything was proceeding so well, and he had become certain that Kagura would not be an issue to come between he and Sarada, Naruto seemed bound and determined to intervene. The disrespect was uncanny.

The very morning after the party, Naruto approached him before the sun had even had time to rise fully in the sky. Boruto was still in the midst of readying himself for his day, just fastening his belt around his waist when the king let himself in unannounced. Boruto did not appreciate it, he cared not for his father's standing, one did not simply enter a man's chambers unannounced and uninvited and not receive a blade pointed at them.

His reflexes were quick, body moving without thought, on sheer instinct and reflex. Despite having his guards around for his protection at all times, Boruto was always prepared to protect himself if need be. The king also carried his own blade and had parried the prince's in an instant. Naruto was strong and wise, despite his leisure.

"Father," Boruto breathed, drawing back his sword and sheathing it with a deep, displeased frown. "What reason do you have to enter my chambers so rudely?" He could only thank the heavens above that Sarada had left his room not even an hour before.

"Is there a reason I should not be able to waltz into my son's room whenever I may see fit?" Naruto pressed and the prince could see with ease that the king was not going to be tolerable.

There certainly were reasons—many—as to why the king should not be just casually entering his chambers unannounced. Unfortunately, the prince was not in a position to say as much to his father.

"What is it you have come for?" Boruto sighed, knowing it must have been of some importance for it to draw the king to his side at such an early hour.

Naruto slowly walked over to the balcony doors, his steps light and yet the heaviness of his boots resounded in the quiet room as if he were stomping. "I must apologize in advance for sprouting this on you on such short notice, but you will have to venture to Kumogakure. It seems their princess has been anticipating a meeting with you for some time now, and uniting our kingdoms would undoubtedly prove to be quite prosperous for us as much as them."

For a moment, the prince could not reply. He was rendered speechless, taken aback by the audacity of his father. Kagura was still here, and it would be unfathomable for him to leave and be unable to keep his cousin company. It would also award Kagura the opportunity to be alone with Sarada. Boruto had not yet had the opportunity to state his standing with Sarada properly. Kagura may know he was interested, but he could not know how serious Boruto was about his lady.

"I cannot go at this time," Boruto said once he'd collected himself, forcing his wayward and frantic thoughts to subside long enough for him to decline. "Once Kagura's visit is—"

"You will go. Today." Naruto hardened his gaze on Boruto who just stared back at him with a look of accusation and disbelief. "The horses are being prepared now, your guards have been informed. You should come along and have breakfast while your things are prepared."

Boruto could not believe the nerve of his father—he really was determined to do whatever he could to try and sway Boruto and Sarada, to try and undermine their bond as if it were so weak. Boruto had never felt such rage. He had never harbored such hatred for his father, the very man who'd helped him be born of this world.

While Naruto turned and began walking towards the door, Boruto just stared after him, clenched fists shaking by his sides. "I did not expect you to stoop to such a low, father." Boruto laughed, though he was far from amused. He could not understand any reason for his father's actions. He had hoped that Naruto would want for him to find happiness as well, but it seemed his position had poisoned his judgment. "Very well, have it your way." Boruto walked ahead, roughly bumping the king out of his way when he passed him to reach the door first. When he opened it, he stepped out and then met his father's gaze directly. "In fact, I encourage you to do your worst. Because, there is nothing you could possibly conjure up that will sway Sarada, nor I."

With those words, he marched forward and didn't look back. No matter what Naruto did to try and prevent his union with Sarada, it would not work. Boruto may have to leave, he may have to separate from his lady and spend days without her, but he would trust their love for one another with all of his heart and soul. Kagura did not have a single hope of courting Sarada, for Boruto already had her affections. This princess would not have a chance of swaying him either, for he only had eyes for his princess.

The prince saw to his breakfast without complaint, ate his fill, and then met his guards outside. Not only were Shinki, Kawaki, and Mitsuki there, prepared to leave with him, but a handful of other capable guards from the royal guard as well. Far more than necessary. Of course, those three were his most trusted and he'd prefer them by his side than anyone else, but Sarada's safety took priority over his own in his eyes.

"I will have one of you accompany me, the other two will remain here and keep guarding Sarada." They were all more than capable and highly skilled, so it didn't exactly matter who went with him and who stayed behind.

"Allow me to stay behind and guard Lady Sarada," Mitsuki said with a small smile and a slight bow. "I will not hesitate to slay anyone who so much as speaks ill of her."

Boruto knew he would, and he hummed in agreement. "Very well. Kawaki will join me, Shinki, you stay with Mitsuki."

"What are all these plans?" Naruto asked as he descended the stairs from the main entrance of the castle. Shikamaru was flanking him, as well as Sai, neither of them making any comment.

"I will be leaving Shinki and Mitsuki—"

"You will not," Naruto interrupted him, pointedly frowning down upon him. "You need your guards while you are away from the safety of our land. For what reason would you leave them behind?"

"They will offer Sarada protection just as they have been," Boruto responded tightly, leveling the king with a glare.

"Ah, not to worry," Naruto laughed. "Kagura is here and he will be a constant by Sarada's side."

Never had the prince been so close to lashing out at his father. In that moment, he wanted nothing more than to reach out and slap the king across his cheek. It was unacceptable to be so disrespectful, no matter his position. It seemed only to become worse, he was determined to hurt Boruto, and this man standing before him now was not the father nor the ruler he had grown up admiring.

"I am pleased to hear it," Boruto said with a smile, ignoring the fury within him. "Kagura is strong and quick-witted, plenty capable of seeing to her safety, just as I am." He sighed and closed his eyes, calming himself. "However, I will not step foot into that carriage unless those two stay behind to guard her alongside him—and that's a promise."

Naruto wasn't happy, but he said nothing else, only gave a curt nod to Mitsuki and Shinki who bowed before Boruto and then went on their way. The prince watched them go, chest aching. They were as trustworthy as guards and brothers came, but he could not help feeling saddened at the fact that he would be unable to see Sarada before he left. Without the words being spoken, he could see that in the way Naruto stood by him, eager to see him off.

"I do not know what it is that you expect to happen in my absence. Even if I have not spoken with Kagura properly and informed him of my plans. Even if I do not get to tell my lady farewell before I go. Nothing will change. She will be mine as much when I return as she is now at this very moment… I hope you sleep well at night, my king."

Not willing to hear another word out of Naruto's mouth, Boruto got into the carriage followed by Kawaki. They both had their own horses as well, but they would be pulled along with the other guards, there if needed. Kawaki kept silent as the carriage pulled away from the castle, but Boruto felt his stare and knew that he was concerned. Those who didn't know Kawaki well would see him as nothing more than a stoic and quite intimidating man, but Boruto knew better. Even in silence, his body language spoke volumes. He did not need to say the words for Boruto to appreciate his loyalty and concern. It was going to be a long trip, but he had hopes of returning as soon as possible. Sarada was going to be upset with him, and he knew that, but somehow he would find a way to make it up to her.

The silence was easily maintained, and not uncomfortable. Boruto especially had a lot on his mind, and none of his thoughts were of the princess he would soon be meeting. It was likely she would pick up on his disinterest soon enough and care not to try and sway him. Most ladies, especially in high standings, did not like to feel unappreciated. Boruto could not pretend to have an eye for any lady who was not Sarada—she had captured his heart so long ago and it would continue to be hers for the rest of his days. He could only hope that he would not have to hurt the princess' feelings.
