Infront of Notre Dame Cathedral Rouge was tied to a stake standing above a pile of hay and wood. Soldiers stood around it, keeping a crowd of civilians from getting close and there were cages near the stake holding all the outsiders and Knuckles. Max stood in front of Rouge holding a scroll "You have been found guilty of the crime of witchcraft. The sentence is death". The crowd started shouting in anger "She's done nothing wrong!" "She's innocent" the soldiers held them back. Max took a troch from the executioner and he faced Rouge "The time has come outsider; you stand on the brink of the abyss. But even now it is not too late to save you" he leaned close to Rouge who wanted to back away from him but couldn't. "I can protect you from the flames of this world and the next. Choose, me or the fire" Rouge defiantly spat in his face which angered him. He turned to the crowd "The outsider Rouge the Bat has refused to repent. She has placed the soul of every citizen of Knothole in…".

As Max continued his speech to the crowd Silver was at the top of the cathedral wrapped in chains that connected to the walls, he looked completely defeated. His friends tried to pull the chains out of the wall "Come on Silver. Snap out of it!" Vector said with Cream adding "Yeah, we have to do something". Silver just stared at the ground "It's all my fault. I just make things worse" "Silver, you have to break these chains" Blaze said. "Why, what difference would it make? Max has already won" they looked shocked at these words "You're giving up? That's it?" Vector said. Cream got close to Silver "You can't just leave them" Blaze was next to her looking angrily at Silver "These chains aren't what's holding you back, Silver" "Leave alone" Silver said blankly. The three of them looked hurt by this "Alright buddy, we'll leave you alone" Vector walked to the ledge at turned to stone. Cream went next to him "After all we're just made of stone" she said before turning as well. Finally Blaze went next to them "We just though you were made of something stronger" she turned into a statue leaving Silver alone.

He looked down towards the execution "I shall send this unholy demon to hell" Max said as he lowered the torch towards the hay. The fire began to spread, and Silver saw the fear in Rouge's eyes, and he thought back to when he was at that exact spot and someone helped him. "NO!" he suddenly yelled and he along with the chains glowed green. The entire cathedral shook as Silver tried to break free. On the ground Rouge was struggling to breath from the some and passed out as Max watched with sadistic glee. The chains all around Silver snapped releasing him. With a look of determination, he leaped off the cathedral and fell towards the ground, he stopped himself just before landing. The whole crowd was surprised, soldiers charged towards him, but Silver used his powers to lift all the flaming hay and wood around Rouge and he threw it at them to force them back. Silver ran to Rouge and freed her before carrying her and he flew them both back to the top of the cathedral "SILVER!" Max yelled after them. Once he reached the top Silver held Rouge's unconscious body up above him "SANCTUERY!" he yelled to the people below.

He quickly took Rouge into a small broom cupboard and placed her on a line of boxes "Don't worry, you'll be safe here" he said to her. He then heard soldiers charging towards the cathedral. He ran out of the cupboard and jumped to a lower level were a cauldron of boiling oil was waiting. Silver used his powers to pick up broken pieces of large stone and he started throwing them down below. As the guards were running around avoiding them Knuckles reached out of his cage and grabbed one of them "I have some complaints" he said jokingly before knocking the guard out and taking his keys. Some soldiers were carrying a battering ram to the entrance of the cathedral and tried to break it down. Knuckles got free and faced the crowd "Citizens of Knothole! Max Acorn has persecuted us, ransacked our city and he has now declared war on Notre Dame herself, Will we allow it!?". The crowd cheered as they ran forward and started freeing all the imprisoned outsiders including Sonic, Shadow, and Omega. The whole crowd then charged on Max's soldiers as Silver and his friend watch "I think the cavalry has arrived" Vector said excitedly.

Silver then saw soldiers climbing the cathedral with ladders and hooks. He used his powers to break the ladders and he threw the soldiers into the river. He noticed his friends weren't helping him, he thought they must be defending another part of the cathedral. Cream was probably dropping bricks over the wall while covering her eyes, he knew she didn't like violence. Vector was probably getting in a fight with any that climbed over. Blaze was probably putting the birds that constantly annoyed her to good use by having them attack the soldiers. On the ground Knuckles was fighting along with the others trying to get to the entrance, he saw Max standing next to the battering ram that was being used to break down the door. Knuckles then looked up and saw burning oil begin to fall out from the cathedral but what shocked Knuckles was that the oil suddenly ignited. The flaming oil fell around Notre Dame causing everyone to scatter like ants. The soldiers carrying the battering ram fled but Max who was safe under the entrance arch began breaking down the door with his sword. He got through looking completely mad and he headed to the staircase which an angry Vanilla walked down. "Max, have you gone insane? I will not tolerate this assault on the house of Gaia". Max grabbed her "Silence you fool. The hedgehog and I have unfinished business to attend to" he threw her aside and went up the stairs. When he got to the top, he closed the door behind him "And this time you will not interfere".

Silver ran into the broom cupboard excitedly "We did it Rouge. We've beaten them…. Back" he realised Rouge wasn't moving. He walked over and stood next to her body "Rouge… wake up, please…Rouge?" she didn't answer and just laid there unresponsive. "Oh no" Silver said grief stricken, he held her head up and hugged her as her sobbed. Silver was so upset over losing his only friend he didn't notice Max entering the room. Max walked over and placed his hand on Silver's back "You killed her" Silver said. "It was my duty, horrible as it was. I hope you can forgive me my son. Don't worry, I shall end your suffering" Silver saw Max's Shadow on the wall and saw he was about to stab him with a knife. Silver quickly turned around and used his powers to pin Max against the wall. Max looked scared now "Wait, son please. Listen to me" Silver face turned angry "No you listen. All my life you've told me the world is a cruel place. Now I know that it's like that because of people like you". "Silver?" he turned around and saw that Rouge was awake, he immediately dropped Max and ran over to her "Rouge". Max looked deranged as he took out his sword "She lives!" Silver picked Rouge up "No!" he yelled as he charged forward taking them both out to the balcony. Silver was about to take off when he suddenly felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck. He screamed in pain as he fell over dropping Rouge. They looked back on Max who was grinning while holding a remote "Did you think I would be near an abomination like you without taking precautions".

He pressed the button again causing Silver to scream louder, he couldn't concentrate with it happening. "RUN!" Silver yelled through the pain, but Rouge stayed with him. Silver struggled to stand as Max walked towards them sword drawn "I should have known you'd risk your life to save that outsider witch. Just as your own mother died trying to save you". "What?" Silver said completely taken aback by this "Now I'm going to do what I should have done 20 years ago!". He lunged at Silver causing both of them to fall off the balcony, Max caught one of the statues while Rouge quickly ran forward and grabbed Silver's hand. The pain in the back of his neck became to much for Silver and he passed out leaving Rouge trying to keep his unconscious body from falling. Max started climbing back up and stood on a gargoyle next to Rouge. He had lost all sanity as he raised his sword to kill the defenceless Rouge "He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!". Before he could swing his sword, the gargoyle began to give way, Max fell and tried to hold on for dear life. He was now face to face with the gargoyle who's face morphed into dark Gaia. Max screamed as the statue broke off and it as well as he fell all the way to the ground.

Rouge was beginning to lose her grip "Silver wake up" his hand slipped through hers and he began to fall "NNNOOOOO!" she yelled. Part way through the fall Knuckles on a lower level reached out and caught Silver and with some struggle pulled him inside. The remote got destroyed along with Max, so Silver was able to wake up and he immediately hugged Knuckles. Rouge then ran down the stairs and met them, her and Silver shared a hug before he brought, he and Knuckles together and the two shared a kiss. Eventually then exited the cathedral to meet the crowd who cheered for them. Rouge then turned at went back inside and extended her hand to a scared Silver. He trusted her so he took her hand, and he was led outside for the crowd to see and Silver couldn't read their expressions. After everything he'd been through tonight this was still the most frightening thing he's done. He started to glow which caused the crowd to murmur. Silver thought they were still afraid of him, but he then saw a small orange raccoon child walk out of the crowd towards him. Silver backed away slightly but there was no fear in the child's eyes as she got close and without warning hugged him. A rush of emotion hit Silver, they're not afraid of him or laughing at him, he's finally been accepted.

The girl led Silver into the crowd "Three cheers for Silver the Hedgehog!" Sonic yelled from a platform. As the crowd began to cheer Shadow and Omega got to Silver and lifted him above everyone and they carried him as he had a huge grin on his face. Sonic picked up the raccoon child with one arm.
