Izumi let out a deep sigh. It had been weeks since her breakup with Bumi, and today was going to be the first time they had seen each other since then. Although the two loved each other, they had grown and changed, and at the moment, they made better friends than lovers. Indeed, their breakup had been a lot smoother than Tenzin and Lin's would one day be.
The Avatar, his wife and children would be visiting for the day. It wasn't unusual, Team Avatar viewed themselves as a loving family, so spending time together just because was a thing. The visit was something Izumi both anticipated and dreaded.
The Fire Nation Crown Princess put her hands over her stomach, she'd been feeling nauseous and had mood swings ever since the break up. At first she had dismissed it as her getting over a long-term relationship. But, as time went by, things became harder and harder to dismiss. And when the doctor confirmed things...
There was a sudden knock at the door. Izumi quickly turned to see her grandmother standing by the doorframe. "The Avatar's here."
Izumi nodded and went to the door. Ursa, with a kind and loving smile, gently placed her cold hands on her granddaughter's shoulders.
"Don't worry. I'm sure everything will be alright."
Izumi nodded and followed Ursa to the front of the palace.
"Izumi!" Kya happily greeted and rushed to her friend/cousin with a big hug.
"Kya!" Izumi greeted back. Then she filled with worry again. "C-can I talk to you in private?"
"Of course." Kya answered, feeling the nerves welling up inside her best friend.
Izumi lead the way to a secluded spot in the palace, and after making sure they were alone, gripped the waterbender's hands tightly.
"What's wrong?" Kya asked, full of concern.
Izumi swallowed hard. "I-I-I." She took a breath, "I'm pregnant."
"What?!"
Izumi nodded. "I didn't notice until after the breakup. And Bumi's the only guy I've ever been with." Tears started forming in the girl's amber eyes.
Kya immediately hugged her, and the Fire Princess cried into her.
"I don't know what I'm going to do! What if there's pressure for me and Bumi to get back together, or marry? We won't be happy. We're better off as friends!"
Kya comforted her friend as best she could. On the one hand, she couldn't wait to be an aunt, but on the other, her brother and cousin's happiness came first.
Both knew they had to tell Bumi, Izumi couldn't hide her pregnancy forever, and Bumi would know that only he could be the father.
"I can tell them for you, if you want." Kya offered, knowing how hard it would be for her dear cousin.
"N-no. No. I can tell them." Izumi replied. Then she slowly pealed herself away and looked into Kya's pretty blue eyes. "Part of being a leader is delivering difficult news. And I will be Fire Lord one day."
Kya nodded. "Just know you can always count on me."
"I know. Thank you." Izumi kissed her cousin's check, then the two made their way to the rest of their family.
