I Don't Own RWBY
"Hello" I figured that trying to be more friendly, or at least a small bit more social, would be a good way to stop feeling so out of place in a school full of highly trained hunters that all are at very least five levels to thirty levels over my own. My only real advantage here was the fact that my semblance is a massive help in catching up with my new peers.
"Ah. Hello! Nice to meet you" I nodded back to the smiling red haired girl. Pyrrha was her name and for being in my year, she was very high leveled. I was much more use to seeing mid twenties to maybe very low thirties in my year, but she was level thirty-eight already, quite impressive. Of course I only just noticed that fact after walking up to her so it didn't really matter to much.
"Nice to meet you as well. My name is Ash Kay, I've been trying to get to know some of our fellow students" She smiled at that though from her body language it was clear I was making her a bit uncomfortable, she just seemed to nice to say anything about it and as such said back to me.
"Nice to meet you Ash. My name is Pyrrah Nikos" She seemed to have been expecting something, her body language also informed me that she was uncomfortable, but I just nodded and said back to her.
"You repeated saying nice to meet you. If you are uncomfortable I understand and you can just say so. I've come to realize the fact that I don't expression emotions makes talking to be a bit difficult" She blinked before waving her hands in front of her a bit before quickly saying.
"No no. It's not that, it's just...nothing. Anyway, have you put much thought into the team selection?" She was changing the topic, I believe it was to try and move past my admittedly awkward and blunt statement. I now feel a bit like I could have handled that better in retrospect, but I don't want to waste her time and my own if she doesn't want to talk. But she seems to be willing, so I see no reason why not to continue. So I was in the middle of opening my mouth to speak, when a new voice interrupted me.
"Speaking of team's Pyrrah. While I'm sure most would be thrilled to be united on a team with a strong and well known individual like yourself" I slowly closed my mouth while blinking, unsure why this white dressed girl thought it would be ok to do something like that while I was in the middle of a conversation...Interesting. I'm annoyed at her rudeness. Do I find people interrupting me to be annoying? Or is it people without manners...Thoughts to think about a later time.
"I'm not quite as sure. I was actually planning on having the chips fall where they may" She did her best to sound like she was into the conversation but I could tell from my, nowadays quite high leveled skill in Body Language, I think it's in the twenties actually, that she also found the interruption a bit rude, she just was to polite to say anything on the matter.
"Um, excuse me b-" I had tried to say something more but that was interrupted why Weiss, as her name above her head suggested, continued talking like I wasn't here.
"Well I was wondering if you would want to be on a team with me" I just closed my mouth again before giving a small nod to Pyrrah before walking away. I saw no reason to be confrontational about it so I just moved on. Looking around, I noted a number of people already talking between themselves, and I had no desires to conversation crash like that girl back there did to me.
"I see you aren't having much luck with people either" I blinked at the sudden words as I turned to see who had said them. It was another girl, because the gender ratio in this school seems to not be exactly one to one. She was wearing a light blue shirt with a dark blue jacket over it, and considering her eyes and hair were a matching palish dark blue it was a lot of one color. I glanced up a bit and noted her name. Sky Brooks, level eighteen. Interesting combination for a name when you know what those words refer to.
"It probably doesn't help that you do that every time to meet someone. Why do you do that anyway? Looking over someone's head only makes sense when you're taller than them" I knew we was referring to Pyrrah, as she was a few inches taller than me, but I couldn't help but blink a bit at that as Sky was in fact shorter than me. Still, all the same, I answered her question.
"My semblance let's me see names above everyone's head. For example, your name is Sky Brooks" She tilted her head and looked at me for a long moment, not sure why, but she did. After a long moment, she just shrugged and said.
"That doesn't seem useful in a fight but I guess it came come in handy all the same" I just blinked at that before wondering if I should explain that I have quite a bit more than just that. Before I could, an announcement rang out, from the voice it was from Glynda, letting us know that it was time to go to the area in which we would be having this thing. Good to know.
"Well, see ya" I just nodded before realizing I had never given her my name. Oh well...Wait, did Glynda say cliff? I wonder what we're going to be doing there.
I was standing on what looked to be a platform that was on the edge of a large cliff. While I have to say that the ideas as to what this might mean was a bit worrying, I also feel the need to mention that the view is quite incredible. I was going to enjoy it a bit longer but Glynda started talking and it was probably a better idea to focus my attention onto what she is saying.
"Now, I'm sure many of you have heard rumors about the assignment of teams. Well, allow us to put an end to your confusion. Each of you will be given teammates today" Opzin followed up on the information that I kind of already knew about by saying that these team mates will be the ones I'll be having for the next four years here. It was quite the important decision. Or, well, whoever you find first after landing in the forest. That sounded quite illogical in my opinion to be honest. He continued on from there but I was interrupted by a screen that basically told me the same thing as what he was talking about.

-Choose a relic
-Return to the top of the cliff
-Time limit 2 hours
-Not dying
Rewards:
-A Team
-1,000 Exp
The rewards were a bit minor but it was basically another one thousand experience bonus to the quest that this side one is attached to so I couldn't complain any. Though I did note that I couldn't say no to this quest, it was already accepted for me. That was a new thing, though it made sense as I had accepted the quest that mentioned this one so it only made sense that it would start this one as well when the time came up. Though I do wonder how we are suppose to get down into the forest.
As I thought about it, the platform with a teenager on it to the left of me suddenly shot up and launched the male there off into the forest. I see. And that was all I managed to think before I was suddenly spiraling in the middle of the air. I just blinked to myself as I looked down at the approaching trees for a short moment before realizing that the speed at which I would hit the ground could possibly kill me, even with my Aura Shield.
With that I opened up my inventory and pulled out a specific item. Gravity dust. Slipping it into my belt, as I've figured out I don't need to be actively holding it, it just has to be on my person, I focused on one of my most recent skills and in a moment, my momentum had slowed down massively. It took a while, as I was far from an expert at this, but I managed to make a five hundred meter drop, only be about a forty foot drop.
Still took about ten points out of my Aura but it was much better than what it could have been. As I felt the faint pain fade into the back ground of my mind. I looked over to my still open inventory for a moment before pulling out a few things. My gun and blade were obviously the first things I equipped but I also pulled out a few more dust items of mine as well. Fire, gravity, lightning, and wind were the assortment of dust that I felt the want to use.
I could probably not have to use them and still be fine but if I never use my dust then I'll never have the skills increase, though I will admit that it is quite a nice bonus that I also get to mess around with some more dust as I find the item to be quite entertaining and interesting to use. Anyway, I should see if I can find someone and then head to the temple. So I got a move on, walking in a straight direction that I hoped to be the correct path.
As I went I did spend some time thinking to myself about who I would mind being partnered up with. Ruby seemed nice but I think her sister doesn't like me, I don't know anything about Blake besides that she was a little concerned after that one guy bumped into me, there is Pyrrah who i wouldn't mind as she seems like the person I've gotten along best with so far. And that's about it, well, besides Weiss, though I don't like her so I'm just hoping that I don't run into her, and well that other girl as well that I just met, sk-
"Hey, it's you, that name guy" I blinked before looking over in the direction of Sky. We both just looked at each other for a long moment before she seemed to remember something. Well more accurately, she just blinked a few times before shrugging and continuing on with her words by saying.
"Well you'll work, come on then name guy" I just blinked again at that before following after the girl. No, not a girl, my partner. It wouldn't be proper for me to classify her in the same area with all the other filler names I have in my mind. Though it would appear she hasn't done me the same curtsy as I have both yet to give her my name, nor has she asked about it.
"My name is Ash by the way" She just nodded at that I caught up with her as we walked now side by side. It wasn't as awkward as I was expecting. Honestly, my partner seems a bit blunt but otherwise she just seems to take everything in stride. She was a bit like myself in that way I guess, if I felt there was a need to compare her to something. Though of course she seemed to be a lot more emotionally available and expressive than I am, so there are some obvious differences.
"Oh? You don't look like an Ash. With your get up, I would have taken you as a Burgundy or something" I just shrugged at that, out of not knowing why the people here all seem to feel the need to correspond the color they are named after to what they wear. I mean, Sky. Sky blue. Blue hair and eyes, along with her outfit. I get it's a theme but it seems a bit much in my opinion.
"You're color scheme is a bit dark for a Sky" I only meant to think it, well, I had thought about saying it but by the time I had decided against the action, the words had already been spoken. That was a new one for me. I wonder why that had happened. And yet, Sky just laughed at that and said happily.
"Touche. But at least my name is in the same range of my 'color scheme'" As she said that, I looked down at my light grey shirt and my darker grey belt. She seemed to notice my glance downwards as well as she just rolled her eyes and didn't say anything else as we walked onward. Neither of us really knowing what direction to go, just that standing around doing nothing would accomplish the same as the work put in, meaning nothing.
Walking in the forest wasn't all that interesting in plain terms, though I will admit I found it quite enjoyable to observe the sights. I like nature, I find it a bit peaceful, even if it does happen to have a bothersome side effect of making horrible monsters that try to kill people. Speaking of which, I noted a faint rustling from around us. I stopped and looked around for a moment while Sky took a few more steps before looking back towards me and said.
"What are you doing?" I just turned to look in the direction of the rustling while pulling back the slide on my gun, chambering a round. Sky suddenly seemed to be able to hear the rustling though that might be because a not so faint growl rang out from the bushes, not just the one I had Memento leveled at. It would seem we are surrounded.
"It would seem we are surrounded" Sky made a sound of faint agreement at that while she backed closer to me, which I figured would be smart to limit the distance between us in case we had to defend the other. I didn't particularly want to lose my partner on my first day of school. That would be quite the depressing way to fail my first quest.
"What should we do?" Sky had asked that as our backs were practically bumping into each other. The growls had gotten a bit louder as well, though I think the only reason why the Grimm haven't pounced yet is because my lack of negative emotions were putting them off a small bit. At least that's the only thing I could think of as to why they hadn't tried to rip us apart yet.
"We should break this circle and either out run them or pick them off when they aren't surrounding us on all sides" She nodded lightly at that as she pulled out two surprising big butterfly knives. From there she spun them around in both her hands for moment before snapped her wrists as one of the handles clicked into place over the blades while I became aware of a small trigger button on the sides of both of the handles she was still holding. They're also guns...of course they are.
"Got it, I'll take the one's on my right, think you can distract the ones to my left while we rush forwards?" She also didn't particularly sound like this situation was of great concern to her. So with her lack of negative feelings I can understand a bit more about why the Grimm have yet to try and kill us. Still, I gave her a nod while activating my own bladed weapon, though it only revealed the blade, not a gun like every other weapon I've seen seems to do.
Still, my thoughts were now besides the point as I took an unneeded deep breath in before turning to be in the same direction as Sky as I raised by gun arm up and aimed under the first name and level I saw. And with that we both started to run as I activated, with a flicker of red over my body, Aura Enhance. As the first Beowolf jumped out at me, I unloaded my magazine into it's head and watched as the damage added up until my gun clicked empty.
462/2100
The beast stumbled back from the fifteen bullets that had smashed into it's body while my partner unloaded her own gun into a Grimm that had lunged at her, sending it flying back from what looked like fire dust enhanced rounds. Though it made sense as otherwise her gun knife weapons wouldn't be able to hold that many rounds before emptying. But now wasn't the time to think about that as I jumped forwards and sliced across the Grimm's chest before jumping off of it, pushing it back even more while I landed into a run with Sky right next to me.
"What now?" She asked that while I was in the middle of reloading, I really need to get some dust rounds, having to reload is really quite the bother in moments like these. Still, we were in the middle of running and not in direct combat so it wasn't to much of a stress inducing event, plus it gave me time to think of what so say as my mind worked around the problem I had been put in to.
"It would be unwise to just jump in and fight them so the best course of action would to just continue to shoot them as we make faster progress to our goal. When their numbers die out, I recommend we switch to melee range to preserve ammunition in case of later threats" She blinked at that before smiling and said with a mock salute.
"Got it mister strategist!" She really does say the strangest things, from 'Name Guy' to 'Mister Strategist' I don't really get it. Still, I gave her a nod as we both turned as I tossed my blade into my inventory as I had no use for it at this exact moment as I aimed up and quickly made note of who I had already almost killed before unloading the necessary five rounds into the Grimm's body before watching it fall and disperse into black smoke.
I blinked in mild annoyance as a box popped up in front of me letting me know I had leveled up, which had made aiming a bit difficult, before removing it from my sight as we continued to run as I unloaded the rest of my gun's ammo into another Beowolf. I seem to attract them for some reason as they seem to be the only Grimm I've come across that was of some sort of threat to look for.
Anyway, I ejected the magazine from Memento as I tossed it into my inventory so I wouldn't have to go buy more later as I held my hand out briefly towards the Grimm and launched a fire ball at them from the fire dust the was slightly digging into my side at the moment. Sky looked at the action in surprise but I was more focused on doing math in my head as I watched as the numbers of the Hp bars from the Grimm that got hit fell. It wasn't much damage because of my very poor skill with the dust but it was something I guess.
It made the ones I hit get pushed back a bit which gave me more time to reload and start to shoot again, this time finishing off the second one I had been shooting at before looking over the Beowolves levels to see which ones would go down with the fewest bullets so I could be a bit more productive with my shots. After a moment I raised my gun back up and after about another four minutes of running, in which my aura was about a third of the way gone, I had killed off another six while Sky I believe had killed her twelfth.
The pack of Grimm had decreased a lot in volume at this point, with only about four pretty high leveled ones remaining with two lower leveled ones. With that I turned to Sky and said to her.
"Change" She understood as we stopped running as I focused more on my own situation rather than her's, as while I wasn't nearly as good at STR based weaponry as I am with DEX based weapons. Still, it was my plan, and to be honest, I was running out of filled magazines, so I see no reason why I shouldn't do this. So with that I replaced the gun in my right hand with my blade as I rushed towards one of the lower end beowolves as that would be more even.
Rushing up to the monster, I jumped upward as the Grimm lunged forwards as I dropped onto it's back as I slammed my blade into the back of the beast. I listened to it roar as it shook about, dislodging me a bit as I pulled the blade out before slicing against the Beowolf's back over and over again as it tried quite hard to throw me off it's back, but that wouldn't be possible with my current use of gravity dust, forcing me to stay rooted into place as I kept hacking and slashing.
It took about half a minute to fall the creature, and in that time I had manged about a good hit per second. Though I must say, I wasn't as surprised as I should have been when I noticed that Sky had already killed two of the stronger ones and was about to kill a weaker one by the time the creature under me disappeared fully. Still, all the same, the second I was free, I rushed forwards and attacked the second Grimm with my blade.
Slashing across it's front before lifting my hand and blasting it with a bit of lightning, honestly just because I haven't used yellow dust yet, and to push the Grimm back a bit as I slashed over it again and again. Before suddenly Sky was next to me before disappearing again to only appear over the top of the Beowolf as she sliced very deeply into it for such short blades, and after only a few seconds under our combined attacked the Grimm busted into smoke.
With that we had finally killed them all off, it had taken about six minutes in total but it felt a lot longer. Not to mention my aura points are half gone now. So to preserve what I had left, I stopped Aura Enhance, and just like that a wave of messages popped up in my face. It was a bit suddenly though I will admit I was a bit glad that they all were nice enough to not show up in the middle of my fight to the death.
Through very constant use, Handgun Mastery has leveled up three times
Through very constant use, Blade Mastery has leveled up four times
Through extreme use of strength, STR has increased by three points
Through use of precision and dexterity, DEX has increased by one point
Through use of skill, Aura Enhance has increased by one level
The User has gained 8,180 exp, The user has leveled up five times
That was... a lot. I read through the important parts, which was just the name of what was increased and who much it had been increased by. The massive jump in levels was interesting to look at as I believe with my previous level up, I should be at level seventeen at the moment. So technically on a level standpoint, I have the same standing as Sky, but that isn't accurate because she clearly has higher levels than me in a number of important skills, letting her damage output far outpace mine.
On a side note, I think I should have about seventy some points for my stats that I still have yet to use in any way. I'm sure if I just dumped those into my stats at the moment I would probably be a good bit stronger than Sky but that meant using them when I could continue to level them up easier now instead of just taking the easy way out. I wonder if I should ever do anything with those if I keep putting it off for later. Before I could really think more on the subject, I was broken out of my thoughts as Sky spoke up in an excited voice.
"Hey look the abandoned thing! Come on, lets go get our piece and then get out of here" I looked over in the direction that Sky was pointing and noted that she was correct. Off in the distance was a broken up circular stone temple with what looked like weird pieces on them. We walked up to the are and looked them all over for a moment before Sky plucked one up.
"The white queen. Fits me does it?" That sparked something in the back of my mind, these all were chess pieces. I didn't realize because I've both never hear of that word before nor have I ever seen a chess set. Huh. I know what chess is now. That's nice I guess. Anyway, I just gave a faint nod to Sky for her question as I felt it would be rude to just ignore her.
"We should get back to the cliff now. Would you mind handing that piece to me" She blinked at my request but nodded all the same as I took the queen piece and tossed it into my inventory.
"So what is your semblance anyway, because I mean, you seem to be able to throw fireballs around, you have you're own area subspace thing to hold stuff, and you also get to know everyone's name? I don't think I've ever heard to a semblance being so multi-functional" She did seem curious but not to the point in which she would demand an answer. I still did answer though all the same.
"I've been told it's a weird one. I have a space called an inventory and my semblance also quantifies information for me. So I know exactly how fast I am compared to someone else, same with intelligence, strength, vitality, even luck. It also lets be know how good I am at certain actions, like Dust Manipulation" She blinked at that as she spun around to face me while walking backward.
"You're like a video game character! You have an inventory, stats, skills, and everything!" Huh, she hit it right on the head, I was trying to explain it in a way that she would understand just in case she didn't know what a video game character is like.
"Correct, I believe I'm exactly like that" She smiled happily at that before spinning back around as we continued to walk back from where we had come from. As we went, I pulled out my remaining loaded magazines as I pulled back my right sleeve, placing them in the open slots on my wrist. Afterwards, I took the free moment to look around the forest, just taking enjoyment in looking at the sight of it all. I kind of wanted to do this while I was in the middle of the air, but it wouldn't have been a good use of time as I would have died more than likely.
"That's pretty cool. All mine get's me is to teleport around a couple feet" I blinked at that before looking over towards her. She didn't seem to actually find that to be a bad thing, which I would assume would already be the case as that semblance sounded quite interesting to use. Of course, I think I prefer my own to it but it is an interesting thing to know about her. It explains what I saw her doing during our Beowolf fight.
"Sounds useful" She gave me a grin at that, which I believe is a good sign. I had said it because she seems to enjoy conversations, and while I'm not the biggest fan of long ones, a few words to keep it going wouldn't be the worst thing. Still, now all we have to do is get back to the cliff. I hope my luck pulls through and we don't have to fight anymore on the way back.
I wouldn't mind more experience but I was low on loaded ammo, and my Ap regeneration is quite slow so more than likely, if a large scale fight breaks out, my Aura Enhance would run out at some point, which would be unfortunate. And while I do have my blade, I seem to prefer fighting at range...Maybe I should change that up a bit, it would be unfortunate if I'm only good at long range when I could also learn to fight in close combat.
Well, I already know how to fight at close range well enough, my blade mastery is only a little under handgun mastery, but my damage output for my blade is nothing compared to Memento. Something that comes from my quite bad STR score...I'll have to work on fixing that. After all, this is a combat school, there is more than likely a gym somewhere on campus that I could use.
Thoughts for later I guess, as first we should get out of this forest.
I already have a team of OCs made but I did consider for like two quarters of a second about having Ash get chucked into one of the cannon teams for fun. But those thoughts didn't last long so here I am. Sky... is an interesting character I guess, I haven't put much thought into her as I was originally planning something else for her character to do but I had her ready and didn't feel like trying to come up with another clever name and weapon so I just copy pasted her somewhere else. Anyway, See ya.
