Holmes stood by the window observing the busy activities of his bees in the observation hive, occasionally glancing out the window at the lengthening shadows on Baker Street. After a time, he straightened and turned to me with a frown on his face. "Mrs Hudson seems uncharacteristically tardy with the evening meal."
I sat up in my armchair by the fire and set aside my manuscript. My stomach grumbled in agreement with Holmes' observation. "You don't think some unfortunate accident has occurred?" I asked.
"Let us hope not, Watson," Holmes said gravely. "But it would be remiss of us not to at least check on her wellbeing."
I agreed, and accompanied Holmes downstairs to check on our landlady.
"Mrs Hudson, are you well?" Holmes called out as we entered the kitchen.
"Yes, don't worry gentlemen, I'll have your supper up to you soon," Mrs Hudson answered.
My attention was drawn to a tiny ball of fluff curled up under one of the chairs. "Mrs Hudson, did you get a dog?" I asked.
"He followed me home," Mrs Hudson explained. "The poor thing was cold and shivering, naturally I brought him inside. And he was dirty and needed a bath, and then of course I noticed the poor dear was hungry."
Holmes nodded. "He was fortunate to have followed someone so benevolent."
