After Robin and I put a stop to the Joker scheme rigging the New Year eve ball with his patented Joker venom that would have been dispersed on to the crowd below. I have the Batwing take robin back to the Batcave well I went to meet up with Gordon at the Tavern for are New Year's tradition. I entered through the kitchen door, seeing Gordon sitting in our usual Booth talking to the owner.
"How's your arm" Jim asked "Better than the Joker's" I joked as I sat down and the owner poured me a cup of coffee. "It close one this time." Jim commented I hummed and then said "Between this and the Justice League it was fairly close." Jim smile then said "Well here's to survival hopefully we'll be doing this again next year's eve." We toasted then I smiled and said "Hopefully." Jim then put a cup of coffee down and reach into a trench coat pulling out of a envelope while saying "Oh before you go this was dropped off at gcpd a couple of days ago address to you." I took the envelope from him. I took out some cash that I had stashed in my utility belt and paid for my cup of coffee. and then proceeded to slip away well Gordon was talking to Joe.
I returned to the Batcave and walked over to the batcomputer where I sat down in my chair and opened the envelope inside of which was a dvd that I then inserted into the bat computer and watched the video that played, a man appeared on screen that I recognized instantly he was the clocksmith Alfred had hired to fix the grandfather clock in the entertainment room four days ago.
I watched the man in the video spoke "My name is Francis Grey, but you probably already know that since you are the Batman." He paused for continuing "As you're probably aware I'm a clocksmith who works with his son, but in another timeline another life. I made a mistake that cost me everything. It all started seventeen years ago when I was deep in debt, Trying to make ends meat working at a local antique clock and repair shop."
He took a sip of water before continuing "The shop had an antique pocket watch on display, It was that watch that cost me to make a terrible mistake. You see I was extremely desperate at that point so I decided to steal it, which of caused the alarm in the display case to go off. As I desperately tried to book it it seemed like a domino effect something happened around me with a bunch of accidents occurring all at once that I ended up getting blamed for and ended up getting a seventeen year sentence."
He paused again to take another drink and then continued "It's easy to become obsessed with time when that's all you have. It was all I could think of when I was in prison. All the time that was stolen from me. And when it became my job to fix all of the guards, clocks. I was suddenly surrounded by it. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years. I was so obsessed with the time I was losing. I began to actually see it unravel before me. I thought I was going mad. That's when I discovered I could turn back time. I spent every day of the next 15 years working on it. One second became five seconds, 10, then 20. I wanted to go back 20 years, before any of this happened. But all I got was 20 seconds."
He then took a breath before continuing thing with his story "In the other timeline last year was when I released from prison on parole, and at that point I was completely obsessed would taking revenge on the people of Gotham for stealing seventeen years of my life away, Deciding to tamper with in New Year's Eve ball drop turning into a nerve gas bomb that would kill everybody in attendance to who was watching ball drop." He paused his face looking grim "I had all but succeed in my plan when your protege Batgirl arrived with Matthew my son who I had not seen in seventeen years. The sad thing is my plan succeeded with my son inhaling the nerve gas and dying in my arms. It was in that moment I was only able to travel seventeen years into the past to the moment where I made the mistake that ruined my life."
He smiled and then said "As I contemplated stealing the antique watch again, I heard your voice in the back of my mind remind me something you told me and that was It's not too late to make the right choice, Francis."
That was where the video ended It made me realize something Joker's New Year's Eve stunts pretty much mirrored the terrorist style attack Francis Grey had performed in an alternate timeline, Which can only mean that the timeline had adjusted itself inserting one of my Rogues gallery in place of Francis. I'll have to make sure to remember this if any other time travel Shenanigans happen in the future.
