The Unfluffables
Chapter Eight: Motherly Love
Savannah Central
"Not bad for your first time bringing a girl home," said Marian. "Well actually," said Nick, "we already share an apartment." "I know that," said Marian, "what I meant was first time bringing a girl home to me." "Well," said Nick, "back in the day, girls were not exactly a priority." "Yes Nick," said Marian, "I remember you in those days. I thought that with the road you were heading down, when I kicked you out, It'd be the last time I'd ever see you." "Nice to know I've been a good influence," chimed in Judy, who was not eager to be little more than the audience to another family fight.
Marian Wilde's inner city apartment was a lot nicer than the one she had ten years ago. It was clean, well furnished, as well as reliable plumbing, electricity and internet. To Nick, it looked like a dream. To Judy, it looked like her grandparents house. Nick got a call earlier that afternoon from his mother (the only way she could have gotten the number was from Judy) and invited him and Judy over to her home for dinner. Nick had to resist the urge to say no, because as much as he hated to admit it, he really wanted his mother back in his life. His and Judy's. So he put on his nicest suit, not knowing what to expect, and brought Judy, wearing a simple pink dress, and went over there, only to be greeted by his mother in a simple flower blouse and blue jeans. So this is how overdressing feels, thought Nick.
"So I know you scent marked this bunny," said Marian, "she must be really special." "About that," added Judy, "Nick never explained to me what that weird sniffing thing was. He did it at the beginning of sex once, seemed almost like a zombie when he did it." "That's called scent marking," said Marian, "it's a very important thing amongst many predator species." "What does it mean," asked Judy, both curious and nervous. "It means you're my mate," answered Nick, "I don't know if you bunnies do anything like it, besides marriage, but for foxes," he paused, thinking of a way to describe what he wanted to say, "we can be territorial when it comes to females." "So that's what you meant by 'I want to mark my territory first' before all that night of the undead fox stuff," said Judy. "I'd rather you not describe it like that," said Nick, "but I supposed you're right."
"So when did you two kits start seeing each other," asked Marian. "About three months after Slick Nick here," said Judy as she affectionately grabbed Nick, "joined the force. You could say that after we stopped hating each other," she squeezed Nick tighter, who in turn grinned and wrapped his tail around her, "I just found your little boy irresistible." "I got her drunk that night just to figure out how much," said Nick, "and I have no idea why, but damn did I have something going." "Alright Nicholas," said Marian, "you two can keep telling your stories without using any bad words at my table."
"What did you cook for carrots by the way," asked Nick as Judy let him go, "you do remember she can't eat some of the same stuff as us, right?" "Don't worry Judy," said Marian, "I made you a salad, with an old Wilde family recipe." "What family," asked Nick, "as far as I know, we're the only living Wilde's on the planet. And by the way," he continued, "who is my father anyways?" "We can talk about it later," whispered Judy angrily to Nick. "Why not now," replied Nick, "I've waited twenty six years for an answer. I've finally become someone, so can we put it to rest?"
Marian took a deep breath before she decided to speak. "Your father's name," she said, trying to dispel the memories, "is Jacky Zorro." "Very funny mom," said Nick sarcastically, "I meant 'father', not 'godfather'." "And I'm telling you the truth," said Marian, "your father was an even bigger criminal than you ever were. Once I figured out what that meant, I fled while still carrying you." "Mom," asked Nick, who now sounded very concerned, "why didn't you tell me?" "Besides protecting you, I had hopes for you," said Marian, not crying but still emotional, "that you'd grow up to be someone better! So what if it took from when you were twelve to now to set you straight. At least you were never a gangster."
"Mom," said Nick, gesturing for Judy to leave the room, which she did, "that's not entirely true. I'm sorry, I almost became one." "I knew Raul was trouble," said Marian, "aside from being flat out heartbroken at you becoming a crook," she continued, "he scared me!" "You were right about him," apologized Nick, "about all of that stuff. Raul wanted me to kill for him. I look back on it everyday knowing I made the right decision to walk out. But now I have to hunt him." "Are you sure you can do it," asked Marian with concern, "he was scary enough as a twenty something year old."
"Excuse me," said Judy as she decided to walk back in, "but I just wanted to check up on you two. Sounds like it got a little heated." "Nice to see we still have each other's backs," said Nick, "even after I took a knife for you.""Niiiick," laughed Judy, "I'm sorry alright! I've apologized for my psycho long lost brother like, a million times." "Suppose you two got more war stories," said Marian. "One of many things we can go all night on," joked Nick. "You little pervert," laughed Judy, "I'm not sure if you love me or just really enjoy me!" "D, all of the above," said Nick. "Is she okay," asked Marian as Judy hit the floor laughing. "She'll bounce right back," said Nick, "I know her." "Alright," said a perked up Judy, "I'm back." "Good," said Nick, "now we can take turns on story time."
"Great," said Judy enthusiastically, "because I've got the perfect one to start with. So it was the day we started dating, we responded to a call at a Paw-Mart about a pervert in the female's room." Of course she starts with this one, thought Nick as he desperately tried to mentally drown out his girlfriend. "So anyways," continued Judy, "the dingo was like 'I'll take your baby', and I couldn't go near the thing. That's where Nick came in." "I don't blame you," said Marian, "Lord knows what he would've done to you." "Probably what he did to Nick," said Judy as she and Marian looked at Nick, who had his muzzle buried against the table, "I tried tazing the dingo, only made him go faster and harder. So I had to push him while Nick was crying like a little girl." "That meth head he-she wet humped me," groaned Nick, "of course I was screaming." "Oh my," said Marian, "and you still went out with him."
"It was more like we went to Blue's with the other cops after duty, made a few agreements with him to make him feel better, and things just escalated." "I believe it was because Benji wanted to win fifty dollars after we embarrassed ourselves in front of Mack," said Nick, with his head finally up, "and then she ended up sleeping in my bed and woke up with a nasty hangover, followed by a day of us getting shot at." "At least you got me out of it," said Judy, doing a somewhat seductive pose while exposing her lavender eyes. "I can see why Mack gave it all up to help me save you," said Nick sincerely.
"What exactly happened there," asked Marian. "So our old buddy, Mack, he was a kangaroo and a Vietpaw vet," answered Nick, "Some other guys that were over there with him started running drugs some time after the war. At one point…." "I got kidnapped by a snow leopard and a seal," interrupted Judy. "And the cougar that stuck a gun into you that day in the desert is back on the streets," continued Nick, "but at least Spotzen's dead." "So's Logan Howlton," said Judy. "Come on carrots," said Nick, "it wasn't your fault and you know it. You did what you had to. We might just have to kill Krueger this time." "What kind of cases do you two work," asked Marian with concern. "With our luck," answered Nick, "the dangerous ones."
Author's Note: So I know it took a couple days for an update, slower than usual on account of it being Christmas, but I hope we all had a good time. Anyhow, so I decided this story really needs to pick up as I have exciting plans for the rest of the series, and I know you all want to see Nick and Judy as Mr. and Mrs. Wilde and I don't want to disappoint you. They just have to bring Raul Salazar to justice first, as well as recapture Dylan Krueger. This little fluff chapter was mostly to characterize Nick's mother, as well as have some sweet moments before a couple chapters of some intense action, to keep the tone. Let me know your thoughts!
