Montage - Closing credits (Warrior and Goddess)
-EXT. Gardening club - Morning, second Saturday, winter term. Spring is standing as she addresses the members while holding up a book titled "Entertaining Carnivores". Bellona is sitting next to her, not paying attention as she vacantly stares off into the distance.
-INT. Juno's apartment - Evening, third Saturday of winter term. Bellona sits in the living room easy chair, awkwardly attempting to knit. Juno sits on the arm of the chair, also knitting. Juno peers over her glasses to give Bellona some instructions and pointers.
-EXT. Cherryton campus - Afternoon, early spring. Jasmine and Hina sit on the ground by the coexistence garden, chatting. The moose and bear pass behind them, walking hand in hand.
-INT. Garden shop apartment, girls' bedroom - Bedtime, first day of spring break. Bellona enters the room to see a shopping bag on her bed. In it, she finds a small box gift wrapped in Solstice paper. A tag reads, "To: Bell, From: Lucy". Bellona sighs. Slowly, she unwraps the present and opens the box. She begins to cry. In the box is a charm bracelet with a Roman helmet and a moon charms on it.
-INT. Apartment building corridor - Evening. Gon is pacing back and forth in front of an apartment door. He is holding a bouquet of flowers. He steels himself and knocks on the door. The door is answered by an ibex doe with a puzzled look, then a look of realization and finally, a warm smile.
-EXT. Cemetery - Twilight. The unnamed male white dwarf rabbit from the funeral lays a bouquet of flowers at the base of Gouhin's gravestone.
INT. School Cafeteria - Lunch (Departures)
Spring and Lucina are chatting as they eat. Bellona sits to join them.
Lucina
We decided you and Bela have to break up.
Bellona
Why? Because The Boys beat you two to setting us up?
Spring
No. It's because there's no good couple name for you.
Lucina
Bay-low-na, Bell-low-la, Bah-la, Bay-bah, Bah-bay. Nothing works.
Bellona
We don't need one. It's not like the tabloids are going to cover us. And if I catch either of you gossiping about us, pelts will be on walls.
Bela joins them and sits next to Bellona.
Bellona (CONT'D.)
Hey Bela, do you know any good taxidermists?
EXT. Garden club - Early Saturday morning (Departures)
Bellona and Indah are setting up chairs, working their way in opposite directions. Moments later, Bellona sees Spring come out of the shed...followed by Jack.
Bellona (V.O.)
Spring and Jack?! Dang! We're going to have to get a rota worked out for that shed.
Spring joins Bellona to help set up chairs. Jack heads Indah's way discretely and helps her. After Bellona sets up a couple more chairs, she sees Mars and Vulcan come out of the shed. She turns on Spring, totally agape.
Spring
(sheepishly)
I know.
Bellona continues her stunned silence.
Spring (CONT'D.)
(low so others cannot hear)
It kinda happened by accident.
Bellona
(also low)
How the hell do you end up with three boys "by accident"?!
Series of still frames
-Silhouette of Jack and Spring kissing by the windmill.
Spring (V.O.)
I'd been seeing Jack for a bit, you know, just snogging when we could find a corner alone.
-Spring leading Vulcan by the hand to the garden bench.
Spring (V.O., CONT'D.)
One time, we had arranged to meet in the garden. In retrospect, I realize that he was being a bit weird. Not very sure of himself.
-Jack's mouth open as he sees Vulcan and Spring kissing.
Spring (V.O., CONT'D.)
Then one of the other boys walks in on us. Except it was Jack. I'd been kissing Vulcan. He'd come to the garden for some books he'd left behind.
-Jack and Vulcan yelling at Spring while she holds her head in her hands, confused.
Spring (V.O., CONT'D.)
Both of them were mad at me. Jack for kissing Vulcan and Vulcan for it not being him I meant to kiss. They were pretty miffed at each other too.
-Spring and Mars kissing on the garden bench.
Spring (V.O., CONT'D.)
Well, a week later Jack forgave me when he accepted it wasn't my intention to kiss Vulcan. So, we were going to meet up in the garden. As soon as we started kissing, I knew it wasn't Jack. You see, the only way I can tell them apart now is the way they kiss. As soon as I had blown his cover, Mars 'fesses up and Vulcan and Jack come out of hiding, laughing.
-Jack, Vulcan, and Mars put on their best big-eyed faces.
Spring (V.O., CONT'D.)
Then they're all asking me which one I liked best. Well it's Jack but I couldn't bring myself to disappoint any of them. So I said I liked them all. I realized my mistake as soon as I saw the light bulb go off in their eyes.
Return to scene
Bellona
Mistake? They didn't force themselves on you did they?
Spring
Nnnno. It wasn't even like peer pressure or wheedling. More like a charm offensive. I'm not used to getting a lot of attention from boys. And they can be quite adorable.
Bellona
I've built up an immunity to it for self-preservation. They know better than to try their cute on me.
I'm not sure how to ask this. I'm not even sure I want to know...
Beat.
Spring
Oh...They're being little gentlemen. It's mostly hugging and a little kissing. If you'll forgive the term, they are a bunch of regular cuddle bunnies.
Bellona
Yeah. We all used to nap together when they were little. Well, even littler.
Spring
I think even they are a little freaked by the thought of taking it any farther. I know I am. I really should tell them that it's Jack I really like. But, like I said, I haven't gotten much attention from boys and it's hard to say no to such a boost to my ego.
INT. Garden shop apartment kitchen - A month after Gouhin's funeral (Warrior and Goddess)
Haru is reading a letter from her cousin, Augie.
Augie (V.O.)
Dear Haru,
I can only imagine the deep sorrow you are feeling over the loss of Lucina and how you lost her.
I am surprised at how much I have felt the loss considering I have only known Lucina through your words and pictures. Like her mother, she was a beautiful girl, inside and out. You obviously loved her a great deal.
Thank you for letting me know about the funeral. I was able to attend but I thought it best to keep my distance. I have been back to visit there several times.
It was always my intention to meet our kits after they had grown. I thought by waiting, we could avoid any confusion or conflict for them. I now regret that decision. I would like to meet the boys sometime soon if you think there are ready for it and would understand my need for discretion. I know you have always said I am welcome to meet them whenever I wanted but I would understand if you have had a change of heart.
I wish there was some way I could help ease the pain I know you are feeling now but I fear even time may not heal this wound.
With my deepest sympathies, Augie
INT. Garden Shop apartment - Friday evening before winter term starts. (Warrior and Goddess)
Sitting at the kitchen table, Haru and Legoshi are watching Bellona measure ingredients into a bowl as she reads Entertaining Carnivores. There is a knock at the back door. Bellona drops what she it doing.
Bellona
I got it!
Bellona rushes out of the kitchen and down the stairs two at a time. When she gets to the door, she takes a moment to smooth her fur and clothes. Bellona opens the door. It is Spring and Bela, carrying a couple of suitcases each.
Bellona
Hi guys! Come on in! How was your trip?
Spring
It was okay. I've been looking forward to this.
While still holding her bags, Spring cheerfully accepts a hug from Bellona.
Bellona
You remember where my room is? You'll be bunking with me.
Bellona turns to gaze at Bela.
Spring
I'll...just take my things on up, shall I?
Bellona
(absentmindedly)
Uh-huh.
Spring smiles and shakes her head as she heads up the stairs.
Bela
Shall I take my bags up to The Boys' room?
Bellona extends her arms and beckons with her fingers.
Bellona
Not just yet.
Bela sets his bags down and he and Bellona hug closely.
Bela
Sorry. I'm still not used to this whole girlfriend thing. I don't know what the rules are.
Bellona
We get to make them up as we go along.
I missed you!
Bellona steps back from Bela holding his hands to gaze at him some more.
Bela
It's only been a few days.
Bellona
But they've been normal days. After the last couple of weeks, they seem to go by much slower. And it's been forever since we've had a normal day together.
Bela
Do you think we'll ever have a normal day again?
Bellona
What do you mean?
Bela
Well, my girlfriend just got done with a killing spree.
Bellona
(worried)
Does that bother you?
Bela
Bother isn't the right word. But it's not normal. I understand why you did it. I was ready to do it myself.
Bellona
I know you were! But that's what I was talking about when I didn't want you to... I needed something normal to return to. You've been my anchor. And I was really glad you were here with Mom the whole time. That took a load off my mind.
Bellona gives Bela another hug then looks a little anxiously at him.
Bellona (CONT'D.)
Bela, I know we're just kids but it seems like we both have done a lot of growing up in the last couple weeks. You're my first steady and I don't want to scare you off by getting serious too fast. But I want to get serious with you.
Bela
You're not scaring me off but we don't have to rush it. I'm not going anywhere. Even if there were any other girls that would so much as look my way, I'm only interested in you.
But let's enjoy it for awhile, like you said, normal stuff. After we've done that for a bit, let's see where we are at.
Bellona
As long as you aren't, I don't know...
Bela, you've felt like family since the day we met and I brought you home for dinner. And now that we're...well, almost lovers, well it kind of says what sort of family I think we are. I don't want to look desperate by planning the rest of my life with my first steady but I don't see me with anyone else. Nobody else has ever come close and you...well you are just...perfect. I don't know what took me so long to see that.
Bela
Yes you do. I'm not a wolf, really. And I'm not perfect. That's exactly why I want to go slow. You've just had a really emotional time and you might be putting too much into this...into us.
Bellona
I'm not saying you're a perfect person. It's just that you were the exact thing I was looking for, a nice wolf. And you are all wolf as far as I'm concerned. I'm not asking you to be my...I don't know...I just want you to know...I...
Bela is watching Bellona with a gentle but slightly mischievous and knowing smile.
Bellona (V.O.)
Why is he making this so hard?
(beat)
How is he making this so hard?
Bela
What you are trying to say is that you love me.
Bellona
No!
(beat)
Well, yes.
(sighs)
The thing is...my biggest regret ever is that I never told Lucy how much I loved her. I'm pretty sure she knew but I never said it.
And now there's you. We've only known each other for a few months. So I don't know if love is the right word but I'll be damned if I know a better one...
Bellona gives Bela an anguished look.
Bela
I know. There doesn't have to be a word. I'm pretty sure I know how you feel and I feel the same way.
Bellona hugs Bela
Bellona
(relieved)
Thank you so much! Thanks for being so understanding.
I love you.
Bellona breaks her hug and looks at Bela in shock when she realizes what she just said. Bela gives her a puckish grin.
Bela
That wasn't so bad, was it? You just needed to not think about it. I love you, too.
It looks like they might kiss but instead Bellona takes Bela by the hand and leads him up the stairs.
Bellona
I'm fixing dinner tonight. You can help.
A set of small footsteps can be heard at the top of the stairs as they head up.
INT. Garden Shop apartment kitchen - an hour later
Haru, Legoshi, Bellona, Bela, Spring, and The Boys are crowded around the kitchen table and are well into dinner.
Spring
Thanks for putting us up so we could come down a day early.
Bela
Yeah! It sure beats catching an early train the day of sign-in.
Haru
We'll have to make it a tradition. But we did have another reason for asking you here tonight.
Bela
Oh?
Legoshi
We wanted to talk about what to say about...Lucina not showing up for school.
Spring
I don't think I could lie about it.
Haru
Fortunately, I think we have a way where you don't have to. If anyone asks, you tell them what we know for sure. We were shopping, Lucy lagged behind. When we turned around, she had disappeared.
Bela
People are going to want to know more than that.
Haru
If they press you on it, you can say you heard Bell say...
Bellona
(as if on cue)
"I wonder if she ran off with some boy."
Spring
That's not true!
Haru
In a way, it is. You did just hear Bell say it.
Bellona
And, everyone will believe it.
Spring
It seems rude to use her reputation like that.
Bellona
Lucy once told me she liked using her reputation to her advantage. I'd like to think she'd approve of it this time, too.
Bela
What do we tell our folks? They already knew something is up when I stayed here for break. We haven't told them anything yet.
Legoshi
You tell them what we said here and you can also tell them it's not the whole story but the less they know, the better it is for us. Jack will understand. If your mom isn't happy, tell her I'll talk with her.
Spring
I still don't like it.
Haru
Honey, I understand. I hate putting you on the spot like this. But of all the things I hate about losing Lucy, this is the one I hate the least.
Spring is deeply embarrassed at how inconsiderate she was being towards Haru's feelings.
Spring
Oh! I'm...I'm so sorry!
Haru
It's okay sweetie.
Come here.
From her stool, Haru extends her arms. Spring rises from her place and goes to Haru for a hug.
Haru (CONT'D.)
I know it's hard on you too. We're trying to make this as easy as we can. We're in this together. You're a good girl. That just makes it harder for you. And with any luck, no one would think to ask you anyways.
INT. Garden shop apartment - late that night
Bela and Bellona are kissing outside The Boys bedroom door. They finish the kiss and stare at one another.
Bellona
Good night.
Bela
Night.
Bellona gives Bela one more peck on the cheek and he smiles. Bellona watches as he turns and goes into The Boys room, then heads to her own room where she find Spring sitting up in bed, reading.
Bellona
You still up?
Spring
I was waiting to talk with you.
Bellona
Oh. Sorry. I lost track of the time.
Spring
Actually, it's Bela I wanted to talk about.
Bellona
(wrily)
Uh oh. Is the sibling about to give me the "If you hurt them, I will end you" talk?
Spring
No-wah! If fact, almost the opposite. I just wanted you to know that if you ever do break up with Bela, I still want to be your friend. Ever since I've gotten to know you and Lucina, well you both have kind of been the sister I always wanted, especially Lucy.
Oh! That didn't come out very good, did it? Sorry!
Bellona
No worries. I'm used to everyone thinking Lucy was the special one, including me. Plus you guys were in the same class. You were bound to be closer to her.
Funny, I was just telling Bela how you two felt like family earlier tonight. And I don't see us breaking up any time soon. I all but told him I want to have his pups.
Spring
Really?!
Bellona
No, not really. It just felt like it. I...I really let him know how I feel about him. I was kind of awkward about it.
Sorry. I don't mean to be spilling my guts to you.
Spring
But that's what I was talking about. I know it's not the same, but you were used to having your herbivore sister to talk with about these things. I want to be that friend...or whatever. And I want you to be that for me too. There's all sorts of things I just wouldn't talk about with Bela.
INT. Orphanage - Daytime, Bellona is four years old (Arrivals)
Jack and Els are sitting across a desk from the female platypus orphanage director.
Platypus
Okay. That takes care of today's paperwork. Are you ready to meet the girl we hope to match you up with?
Els nods enthusiastically. Jack takes a deep breath.
Jack
I'm not sure. This is such a big step.
All three get up and the platypus leads them out of the office and down a corridor.
Platypus
Indeed it is. A lot of parents get a little nervous at this point. And for you, it's a bigger step than most. This is our first time placing a herbivore with a carnivore parent.
Els
Are you sure it's okay?
Platypus
Between your home visit and your family's support of the orphanage over the years, we are quite sure she's going to a good home.
Els
I was thinking more about how she'll feel about it.
Platypus
We're one of the few orphanages that takes both herbivores and carnivores. When they are this young, we keep them together all the time. We feel it helps them get along better later in life. And Trianna is used to carnivore adults taking care of her. I'm sure she'll be fine. The hardest part for her will be suddenly becoming an only child after being surrounded by so many other children.
Here we are.
The platypus opens a door and leads them into a large playroom with a dozen preschoolers in it.
Platypus (CONT'D.)
Trianna, of course, would be the little goat over there.
Els takes Jack's hand. His tail wags enthusiastically.
Els
Oh, Jack!
Jack is star-struck.
Platypus
Ready to go say hi?
Els bites her lips and nods.
Jack
Yeah!
The platypus leads Jack and Els over to where Spring is playing.
Platypus
Trianna, these folks would like to read you a story. Why don't you go pick out a book.
Young Spring
'kay
Spring drops what she was doing and toddles over to a bookshelf and returns with a book. She hands it up to Els.
Young Spring (CONT'D.)
Here.
Els sits cross-legged on the floor. Spring sits in Els's lap. An aura glows around them and Spring snuggles into Els. Els begins to read.
Els
Beep! Beep!
Els's reading becomes indistinct as Jack is distracted by a young dog walking by with a box of puzzles.
Jack
(to Platypus)
That boy...
Platypus
Bela? You're application said you were interested in a golden lab. He's a mixed breed. We didn't think to match you up with him.
Jack
We were more concerned about being sure they'd be okay with herbivores than what they look like.
Platypus
He'd be fine since he's mostly lab. And he's been here since birth and raised around herbivores.
Jack
Isn't he a little old to be with the preschoolers?
Platypus
He's only four. We think he has some wolfhound in him, so he's big for his age. Why don't you go say hi.
Jack
Really?!
The platypus nods. Jack goes over and sits at a too small table in a too small chair with Bela.
Jack (CONT'D.)
Can I play too?
Young Bela
Okay.
(beat)
Are you 'dopting Tri'na?
Jack picks out a puzzle and starts working on it.
Jack
We hope so. How did you know?
Young Bela
I seen it. A mom and dad read a story to someone and a couple days later they all leave together.
(beat)
You're not a goat. They're always the same.
Jack
My wife and I are different.
Young Bela
Is that okay?
Jack
That's up to Trianna.
Young Bela
I wouldn't care.
Jack
You'd like to be adopted?
Young Bela
My friends are all here but Kiko says getting 'dopted is better.
Jack
Who's Kiko?
Young Bela
He's a big kid. He says big kids don't get 'dopted.
Jack
Hmmm.
Els finishes the book. Spring hops up to go play.
Platypus
Trianna, what do you say?
Spring
Thnz.
Spring toddles off. Els indicates the book to the Platypus.
Els
May I keep this? I'll replace it.
Platypus
Of course. What a lovely idea.
It looks like Jack has made a friend.
Els looks up to see Jack and Bela playing together. Her jaw drops. She looks up at the platypus, who indicates with a tilt of the head that Els should go on over. Els beams as she goes over to them, pulls up a too small chair, sits, and starts on her own puzzle.
A half hour later, the platypus, Jack, and Els are walking back to the office.
Platypus
So, what do you think?
Els
Could we adopt them both?
Platypus
You are already approved for Trianna. I'll have to run Bela by the board but that won't be a problem. We like to place children together.
Els
Jack?
Jack
Duh!
Els laughs.
Platypus
What's so funny?
Els
It's an old joke between us. He even said that for our wedding vows.
Platypus
I'll start Bela's paperwork. For our records, are you planning on keeping their names?
Jack
Bela seems a little old to go changing his name but we were thinking about Spring for Trianna.
Platypus
Oh! That's a pretty name.
